Brian J. McCarthy
WILLIAM WALDRON
Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award A former partner of the legendary design firm ParishHadley, award-winning designer Brian J. McCarthy graduated from New York City’s Pratt Institute. He opened the doors of his own eponymous design firm, Brian J. McCarthy, Inc., in 1992, and provides interior design as well as architectural consultation to clients around the world. In 2005, McCarthy designed the private quarters and refurbished the State Rooms in Winfield House, the official residence of the Ambassador of the United States to the Court of St. James. Additionally, McCarthy has designed an array of stunning private residences, many for clients so high profile they wish to remain anonymous. Previous and current projects include residences in New York City and the greater New York region; Connecticut; Massachusetts; Palm Beach, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Pebble Beach and Bel Air, California; Prouts Neck, Maine; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Charlottesville, Virginia; Toronto, Canada; Bermuda; Monaco; St.Tropez, France; and Gstaad, Switzerland. McCarthy is a member of Architectural Digest’s AD100 and Elle Decor’s A-List of top interior designers around the world. His work has been featured in many publications, including Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Elle Decor, New York magazine (100 Best), The New York Times, and Veranda, as well as in several books, including his own book, Luminous Interiors which he wrote in 2013, and Parish-Hadley Tree of Life which he coauthored with Bunny Williams in 2015. He lives in New York City with his partner, Danny Sager, and their beloved dog, Daisy.
Gale Singer and Andy Singer Larry Kravet Design Industry Innovation Award Circa Lighting was founded in 1998 by Gale Singer. After having worked for Visual Comfort & Co. for 10 years (the leading manufacturer of decorative lighting founded by her brother Andy Singer), Gale moved to Savannah, GA. There she conceived the idea for a well edited lighting showroom where clients could shop in a boutique like atmosphere. The company was launched with a 375-square feet showroom in Savannah’s historic district. Today Circa has thirteen showrooms across the country (with more in the works) along with a very active internet presence, and continues to be the premiere distributer of Visual Comfort & Co., Tech, Generation Lighting and Monte Carlo Fans. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Visual Comfort & Co. was founded in 1987 by Andy Singer. Although Singer started as a lighting salesman, he knew he wanted to create his own brand of products. Visual Comfort started by producing pharmacy lamps and then began collaborating with brand-name designers. Today, the company has expanded into a powerhouse of the world’s most elite designers with a diverse portfolio of lighting products that all feature a timeless quality. Visual Comfort & Co. continues to produce hundreds of innovative lighting designs per year.
Elizabeth Lawrence
PETER MURDOCK
Rising Star Award / Sponsored by The Shade Store Elizabeth Lawrence was named partner of Bunny Williams Inc. in 2017 after a 14-year tenure, which began with a coveted internship. Elizabeth notes, “These days, it’s rare to rise from intern to partner while under one roof. In my case, I found my calling through the apprenticeship tradition much the way Bunny did when she began her long association with the revered ParishHadley Associates.” Bunny adds, “Elizabeth’s passion for design, leadership qualities, and business acumen created a trajectory that made her an inevitable choice for partner. In all she does, Elizabeth upholds the Bunny Williams legacy of quality and trust while bringing her own voice, management style, and creativity to the table.” Originally from Wilmington, DE, Elizabeth attended the University of Richmond and then the New York School of Interior Design. After NYSID, her internship at Bunny Williams Inc. led to a job as Junior Designer and she rose later to Senior Designer. “Bunny is an ideal mentor and collaborator, and we take our partnership seriously. She sets the stage with her vast experience, practicality, intelligence, and sense of humor. Generous in spirit, she invests in her staff when they show initiative, drive, and talent, so I worked hard to meet these expectations. I’m thrilled to have the privilege of leading by Bunny’s example,” continues Lawrence. Known for her skill of building stories for beautiful rooms from one point of inspiration, Elizabeth carves out time for personal growth, which informs her designs. When not at the office, reading, visiting museums, or spending time with numerous nieces and nephews, she’s exploring the world and capturing her adventures with her other great passion: photography. A recent trip to Berlin and Vienna are highlights, while future sojourns in Greece, Africa, and Iceland await.
Atique Rahman ’20
CHRIS SPINELLI
NYSID Scholarship Recipient Atique Rahman is a New York School of Interior Design 2018 graduate of the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) program, and currently a senior candidate for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree ’20. He is a two-time recipient of the NEWH Hospitality Design scholarship and this year’s LaVerne Neil Scholarship at NYSID. Being the recipient of the LaVerne Neil Scholarship has enabled him to meet his goal of graduating in May with his BFA, as the absence of such funds would have required him to put his education on hold until additional funds could be saved. At 17, Atique traveled to the United States with $700 and a one-way ticket. After a few years learning the language and considering career paths, an opportunity to help a friend with setting up his home led to the life-changing decision to pursue interior design as his career and to attain his degrees at the New York School of Interior Design. Atique is well known and respected among the extended NYSID community. He served as the three-time President of the student sustainable design group now known as Green Design Group, leading NYSID’s rooftop garden installation. He is co-President of the Undergraduate Student Association. He has worked in Admissions as a tour guide, the Library, and as a Resident Advisor for the Summer Pre-College Program. His interior design internship and employment experience to date includes Pamela Baker Associates, David Scott Interiors, Phillip P. Davis Interiors, and Patrick McGrath Design. Atique is honored to be one of four NYSID students selected to participate in NYSID’s 2020 Dining by Design DIFFA project. He is also hard at work completing his senior thesis project. Inspired by his personal experience of arriving in NYC without knowing anyone or having a place to stay, Atique is designing a NYC boutique hotel which would offer 3-6 months of housing, mentorships, and a recreational center to young adults who immigrate to the United States. Atique’s design work incorporates global cultural nuances he has witnessed and incorporates sustainable design and ecofriendly practices. He hopes to eventually return to NYSID to earn his Master of Professional Studies in Sustainable Interior Environments.

ABOUT THE AWARDS Awards are presented in three different categories to individuals or companies in residential or commercial design who have made significant contributions to the interior design profession. ALBERT HADLEY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Since 2011, NYSID has been presenting the Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award to individuals who have made contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of design. We are thrilled to be giving the 2020 award to Brian J. McCarthy. Brian joins an illustrious group of awardees who include Mario Buatta (2011), Jack Lenor Larsen (2012), Geoffrey Bradfield (2013), Mariette Himes Gomez (2014), John Rosselli and Bunny Williams (2015), Ellie Cullman (2016), David Kleinberg (2017), Suzanne Rheinstein (2018), and Jeffrey Bilhuber (2019).
LARRY KRAVET DESIGN INDUSTRY INNOVATION AWARD The Larry Kravet Design Industry Innovation Award is presented to an individual or company who has helped advance the field of interior design in a significant way, including but not limited to the introduction of new products, services, methods, ideas, technologies, or business models. The Kravet awardee may be involved with home accessories, decorative objects, furniture, lighting, or textile design. He or she may also be involved with cutting-edge technologies that benefit the residential and hospitality design industry. Presented for the first time in 2019 t0 Christopher Spitzmiller, we are proud to be presenting the second annual Larry Kravet Design Industry Innovation Award to Gale Singer and Andy Singer. The Kravet Award is named in memory of Larry Kravet, an icon within the interior design industry, who passed away in 2018 at age 92. He transformed his grandfather’s small tailoring shop, established over 100 years ago, into Kravet Inc. Under his leadership, Kravet Inc. grew into North America’s largest integrated ‘to the trade’ wholesaler of decorative home products and one of the country’s foremost purveyors of fabric, furniture, wall coverings, and carpet. Mr. Kravet was the third generation of a now five-generation family company. His daughter, Ellen, is Chairman of the NYSID Board, and is helping continue his distinguished legacy both at NYSID and at Kravet Inc.
RISING STAR AWARD The Rising Star Award is presented to a designer, preferably a NYSID alumnus, who is just hitting his or her stride in the profession. The award honors a talented individual relatively early in his or her career, who is becoming a recognized name in the field. Presented for the first time in 2019 to Alberto Villalobos ’06, we are proud to be presenting the 2020 Rising Star Award to Elizabeth Lawrence. We are thrilled that The Shade Store is joining us in recognizing emerging talent in our industry by sponsoring this award for the second year in a row. For three generations, service has been the foundation of The Shade Store. As the leader in custom window treatments, it is committed to providing the finest quality drapery, Roman shades and roller shades, a great value and an exceptional customer experience. The brand’s exclusive collection of more than 1,300 in-stock materials and industry-leading C.O.M. program give designers virtually endless creative opportunities.
