GRADUATE STUDY

Since its founding in 1916, The New York School of Interior Design has been a leader in interior design education. We’ve trained the industry leaders whose work defines interior design today, and by rigorously preparing students for professional success, we’re shaping the designers of tomorrow. Students come from all over the world to study at NYSID because they know there’s no better place to study interior design. They come because NYSID is a single-focus educational institution, because of its specialized graduate programs, and because of the personal attention they receive in its small classes and through student services. Preparing our students for professional success is one of our top priorities, and it shows: 100% of our graduate students were employed or pursuing further education within six months of graduation in 2016/17. And many went to work at top firms such as Gensler, HOK, Rockwell Group, Perkins+Will, Robert A.M. Stern Architects, and Jeffrey Beers International. Each year, when DesignIntelligence magazine surveys leading design practitioners asking “In your firm’s hiring experience in the past five years, which schools are best preparing students for a future in the profession and designing a sustainable future?,” NYSID is consistently one of the top-ranked programs. NYSID is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Its BFA and MFA-1 programs are also accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).

THE GRADUATE CENTER

70TH STREET

Located at 28th Street and Park Avenue South, NYSID’s LEED-Platinum certified Graduate Center, designed by Gensler, is home to 150+ graduate students. The Graduate Center houses classrooms, studios with dedicated workspaces, exhibition space, a materials library, and a student lounge. Interiors & Sources magazine called it a “facility that fosters community and collaboration, and embodies the essence of the ‘studio’ atmosphere.”

NYSID’s uptown facility is nestled on a leafy Upper East Side block within walking distance of institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Frick Collection. Its conjoined 100-year-old Renaissance- and Colonial-Revival buildings include a 150+ seat auditorium, a state-of-the-art lighting lab, and an adjacent dedicated classroom for our MPS-L students.

“ Our faculty’s interest in our students doesn’t end in the classroom. Most of our instructors are professional, well-networked designers, and the relationships they develop with students often create internship or other professional opportunities.” — BARBARA LOWENTHAL ASSOCIATE DEAN

The healthcare industry is rapidly expanding to accommodate the growing needs of the aging baby boomer generation and the global population explosion. In response, NYSID has created an innovative, interdisciplinary program that provides practicing designers an opportunity to work together and to acquire a broad knowledge of current issues, research, and theory in the design of healthcare interiors and apply it in focused studio experiences. All classes are offered in the evenings and weekends.

Lighting design is both an art and a science, and changing technologies, new energy efficiency laws, and the demand for inspired, innovative solutions have created a strong need for specialists in interior lighting design. This one-year program—open to those with a professional degree in interior design, architecture, or a related field—must be completed full-time, with all classes offered in the evenings and on weekends.

The MPS in Sustainable Interior Environments (MPS-S) is a postprofessional program structured to prepare design professionals to assume leadership roles in developing and maintaining sustainable interior spaces that will positively impact the world. Intended for those working in the design or architecture professions, the program provides students with a thorough grounding in the best practices in environmentally informed designs.
