Re-imagining the Havana Home: Authentic Cuban Style Past, Present, and Future Since 2010, Cuban-American Hermes Mallea, co-founder of (M)Group, has been working with a handful of Cuban photographers to document the city’s rich architectural patrimony that was interrupted by the Cuban Revolution of 1959. In this lecture, Mallea will take us behind the scenes to visit landmark houses constructed between 1860 and 1960 highlighted in his book Great Houses of Havana (Monacelli, 2011). He will also share his passion for the authentically Cuban style homes of the city’s artists, international residents, and cultural elite featured in his upcoming book Living in Havana Today (Rizzoli, September 2017)— personality-filled interiors that are a testament to Cuban ingenuity, created while working within the constraints imposed by Cuba’s economic and material isolation.

Alumni Panel Discussion

Joseph Walsh: Crafting the Contemporary

As the NYSID’s centennial year comes to an end, we take the time to look at the past, present, and future of the interior design industry through the eyes of our alumni. With NYSID as their springboard, this panel will discuss their own experiences within the field and the roll that an education in interior design played. The discussion will be moderated by Susan Zises Green. Free to alumni. Reservations are encouraged.

Joseph Walsh is an Irish master maker and furniture designer of international acclaim, who has formulated a unique and personal language based on the art of bending and laminating ash and other indigenous timber, reflecting his heritage. This panel positions Walsh, who has exhibited internationally, and whose work is included in collections of many major museums, within the fabric of contemporary design and within that of Irish design and heritage. Panelists include Joseph Walsh, furniture designer; Jennifer Goff, curator of furniture, silver, and the Eileen Gray Collection at the National Museum of Ireland, and Visiting Fulbright Scholar and NYSID Instructor; and Glenn Adamson, design curator and scholar. The discussion will be moderated by Daniella Ohad, design historian.

NEST Magazine—A Wild Adventure Nest Magazine was a publishing outlier with a brief but impactful life from 1997–2003. Joseph Holtzman, publisher and editor-in-chief, created an outrageously unique and provocative experience for readers, exploring and revealing every kind of dwelling, from the professionally designed and grand, to the humble yet beautiful. Lisa Zeiger, former decorative arts editor, Nest; Mitchell Owens, decorative arts editor, Architectural Digest; and Glenn Gissler, president, ASID NY Metro, will discuss the magazine’s creators and exuberant content as well as its influence upon design thinking and writing today.

This lecture is co-sponsored by the American Irish Historical Society.
