Digest

Jeffrey Bilhuber The Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award Jeffrey Bilhuber has a uniquely American design perspective that breathes new life into tradition with a confirmed understanding of modern sensibilities, comfort, and style. Mixing periods and design ideas with confidence, clarity, and instinctive style, he is often likened to such design legends as Billy Baldwin and Albert Hadley. Bilhuber’s high-profile clients have entrusted him to bring practicality and sheer beauty into their lives and residences. His work has been published in every major national and international shelter magazine, and he is consistently named to industry honors lists including the AD 100, Elle Décor’s A-List, and House Beautiful’s Top 100 Interior Designers. Jeffrey is committed to the growth of his core collaborations and licensed products. His current stable of manufacturing partners include; area rugs for Elson and Company, bespoke porcelain dinnerware for de Gournay, decorative accessories, lamps, and mirrors for The Lacquer Company, and patterned hardwood floor tiles for Mirth Studios. Launching in 2019 are broadloom carpets for Stark Carpet, fireplace surrounds for Chesney’s, and The Perfect Room, a curated digital marketplace with designer and television personality, Kathryn Ireland. Everyday Decorating, his fifth title with Rizzoli, will debut in March.

WILLIAM WALDRON

Christopher Spitzmiller The Larry Kravet Design Industry Innovation Award Christopher’s iconic ceramic lamp designs draw inspiration from classical forms and traditional gem-like glazes. He began his career in 1996 in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. where he worked out of an old school house and quickly began attracting the attention of designers including Richard Keith Langham and Albert Hadley. His business and reputation grew steadily over the next few years, and in the fall of 1999 he moved to New York City where he still creates his one of-a-kind lamps with a crew of skilled artisans. The lamps are of timeless appeal and luxurious quality. His beautiful forms are drenched in rich, vibrant colors and patterns. Each one of a kind lamp is set in a hand turned hardwood base, which is then water gilded with 23k yellow gold or 9k white gold. In recent years Christopher’s designs have moved beyond lamps and now encompass tableware, decorative accessories, mirrors and furniture. Christopher’s work is often featured in celebrated publications such as Architectural Digest, Veranda, House Beautiful, Elle Décor, Departures, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. In 2016 he received an alumni citation for career achievement from his alma mater, St. Lawrence University. He has had the honor of making lamps for the Obama Oval Office, the current and past three White House Administrations, as well as Blair House and countless other distinguished American homes.

DAVID A. LAND

When not in the studio, Christopher can be found at his farm in Millbrook, NY gardening, beekeeping, making jam, cooking for friends, or tending to his flock of heritage breed chickens, turkeys, peacocks and doves. He also enjoys the pleasure of giving back to the community by serving on the board of the local time-honored Lenox Hill Neighborhood House and as the Vice Chair of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club President’s Dinner.

Alberto Villalobos ’06 The Rising Star Award / Sponsored by The Shade Store Alberto Villalobos, founder of A.Villalobos, began the pursuit of his passion after moving from his hometown in Colombia to attend the New York School of Interior Design. Soon after graduating, he opened his design firm, quickly cultivating residential clients in New York City and all over the world. Alberto’s sincere love of design and its history, his respect for culture, individuality, and collaboration, his detailed diligence, thoroughness and thoughtfulness are all the traits integral to the firm’s well conceived and fulfilling processes and results. A.Villalobos is a New York based boutique design firm specializing in a seamless ability to meld together the new and the old, the antique and the modern, the anachronistic and the contemporary. Pulling from a wide range of cultural and aesthetic influences and knowledge, the firm eclectically crafts unique and striking environments while keeping in mind and tending to its clients’ individual preferences and comforts. With a masterful balance of discretion and luxury, A.Villalobos provides a fresh and distinct perspective, honoring the future of design as well as the traditions of it. They value the evolution of creativity while possessing deep reverence and appreciation for traditional craftsmanship, timelessness, integrity, and practicality. With these philosophies in mind, they create unique, elegant, and artful spaces that ensure durability, usability, and agelessness. They know the pragmatic and logistical needs of each client are just as important as any other step in this process, and at A.Villalobos, they are dedicated to and abundantly applauded for considering and meeting these vital particulars.

Rachel Edelstein ’18 NYSID Scholarship Recipient Rachel Edelstein is a New York School of Interior Design 2018 graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program and two-time recipient of the Charlotte Moss scholarship. In January, she began her career at Beyer Blinder Belle’s Washington, D.C. office as an Architectural Designer where she works on largescale public projects held to the highest standard of preservation, sustainability, and positive societal impact. The scholarships Rachel received greatly relieved the burden of tuition at NYSID, decreased the necessity of loan payments, and even enabled her to buy a laptop for better productivity. For Rachel, each scholarship was a welcome bridge, helping her learn, succeed, and get the most out of her full-time NYSID experience and interior design education. She participated in memorable growth opportunities including leading a team of students for NYSID’s 2018 Dining by Design DIFFA project, employment at New York firms throughout her schooling, and nominations for awards including the 2018 Gensler Brinkmann Scholarship, among other involvements. Rachel was drawn to interior design from a young age, and her interest later evolved and advanced. Beginning her college studies at the University of Delaware, she transferred to NYSID in order to pursue the dream of a career in the field. That ambition truly took hold when her courses at NYSID helped her to understand that design could be used as a tool for change. After completing her thesis project, a social justice community center with an education component, she realized that she only wanted to forge her career at firms that emphasize societal benefit. The idea that design at its core is a way to improve the lives of people, beyond the beautiful and artful aspects of it, is what made Rachel realize that this career path was what she was meant to follow.

ABOUT THE AWARDS Awards are presented in three different categories to individuals or companies in residential or commercial design who have made significant contributions to the interior design profession. At this year’s Gala, we are introducing two new awards: The Larry Kravet Design Industry Innovation Award and The Rising Star Award.

THE ALBERT HADLEY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Since 2011, NYSID has been presenting The Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award to individuals who have made contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of design. We are thrilled to be giving the 2019 award to Jeffrey Bilhuber. Jeffrey joins an illustrious group of awardees who include Mario Buatta (2011), Jack Lenor Larsen (2012), Geoffrey Bradfield (2013), Mariette Himes Gomez (2014), John Rosselli and Bunny Williams (2015), Ellie Cullman (2016), David Kleinberg (2017) and Suzanne Rheinstein (2018).

THE LARRY KRAVET DESIGN INDUSTRY INNOVATION AWARD The Larry Kravet Design Industry Innovation Award is presented to an individual or company who has helped advance the field of interior design in a significant way, including but not limited to the introduction of new products, services, methods, ideas, technologies or business models. The Kravet awardee may be involved with home accessories, decorative objects, furniture, lighting or textile design. He or she may also be involved with cutting edge technologies that benefit the residential and hospitality design industry. We are proud to be presenting the first Larry Kravet Design Industry Innovation Award to Christopher Spitzmiller. The Kravet Award is named in memory of Larry Kravet, an icon within the interior design industry, who passed away in 2018 at age 92. He transformed his grandfather’s small tailoring shop, established over 100 years ago, into Kravet Inc. Under his leadership, Kravet Inc. grew into North America’s largest integrated ‘to the trade’ wholesaler of decorative home products and one of the country’s foremost purveyors of fabric, furniture, wall coverings and carpet. Mr. Kravet was the third generation of a now five-generation family company. His daughter, Ellen, is Chairman of the NYSID Board, and is helping continue his distinguished legacy both at NYSID and at Kravet Inc.

THE RISING STAR AWARD The Rising Star Award is presented to a designer, preferably a NYSID alumni, who is just hitting his or her stride in the profession. The award honors a talented individual relatively early in his or her career, who is becoming a recognized name in the field. We will be presenting the first Rising Star award to Alberto Villalobos, a 2006 graduate, and are excited that The Shade Store is joining us in recognizing emerging talent in our industry by sponsoring this inaugural award. The Shade Store is a family-run, premium custom window treatment company with a rich heritage in luxury textiles and interior design. Its exclusive collection of more than 1,300 in-stock fabrics and materials provides customers with an unparalleled level of style and customization options. Every window treatment is proudly handcrafted in the USA by a skilled artisan, hung and tested for quality assurance and ships free in 10 days or less. The Shade Store offers a complete range of design services for consumers and design-trade clientele, including free swatches, free professional window measurements, photo rendering services and nationwide installation services. The Shade Store has 65+ showrooms nationwide. For more information on The Shade Store, please visit theshadestore.com.

SPECIAL THANKS TO LALIQUE The New York School of Interior Design thanks Lalique for the generous contribution of the Anemones bowls, which we are presenting to each honoree as a token of our appreciation. Founder, RenĂŠ Lalique, was particularly inspired by the purity and innocence of the anemone flower, which he made the centerpiece of many jewels and decorative objects in the beginning of the 20th century. Today, Lalique has breathed new life into this motif. The beautiful, yet functional Anemones bowl features a highly detailed design of the symbolic flower, juxtaposed in a graphic play on repetition.

HOME: THE FOUNDATIONS OF ENDURING SPACES

“An essential text for all students of design . . . [and] inspiration and intel for those simply interested in the art and practice.” —ALEXA HAMPTON, FROM THE FOREWORD From the nation’s top college for interior design education comes the definitive reference book for designing the home. This lavishly illustrated and highly detailed interior design bible provides a comprehensive education on home design and decor, from color theory principles, to space-specific considerations, to collaborating with architects and other professionals for the best results. Drawing on NYSID’s Basic Interior Design curriculum, HOME offers an unparalleled mastery of the key elements of enduring design, rendering it the only book you’ll ever need. HOME was written by Dr. Ellen Fisher, NYSID’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean. With this publication, Dr. Fisher follows in the footsteps of NYSID founder Sherrill Whiton who first penned The Elements of Interior Design in 1937, which was long considered to be the authoritative guide to the subject and the foundational reference for interior design programs across the country. HOME was published by Clarkson Potter in March 2018, with photographs by Mark La Rosa. Please be sure to stop by the registration desk on your way out to purchase your own copy of HOME (shipping available). Sales of this book benefit The New York School of Interior Design.
