Dialogues on Design Dialogues on Design, a series of six conversations, returns for its fourth year. Curated by the editorial staff of Hearst Design Group and Newell Turner, editorial director of Hearst Design Group, each session will feature leading designers and creative thinkers. Designers will discuss their approach to work: their inspiration and influences, their leadership and response to trends, and the evolution of the field. Each Dialogue on Design concludes with a reception where the audience is invited to meet and talk with the designers. The Evolution of the Firm: Three Decades of Design with Cullman & Kravis Associates Spring 2018 Alumni Lecture

Join the author of Postmodern Design Complete, which was recently selected by the New York Times as one of 2017’s best Art Books, in this dynamic and thought-provoking presentation. Judith Gura, design historian and author, will discuss the history, designers, and iconic designs of the Postmodern movement, and the reasons behind its current and well-deserved revival. A conversation to follow moderated by creative director of Metropolis, Paul Makovsky.

Join Ellie Cullman and the partners of the distinguished AD100 design firm Cullman & Kravis as they share how the firm has evolved in the ever-changing landscape of Interior Design for this NYSID Alumni Lecture. Alumni Association President Lawrence Levy will moderate a panel discussion with Ellie and the partners, Alyssa Urban, Claire Ratliff, Sarah Ramsey and Lee Cavanaugh. Free to NYSID alumni.

We Are What We Build Sally Henderson Lecture on Green Design

Join Gil Schafer, award-winning architect and author of A Place to Call Home, as he opens the doors to his world of comfortable classicism, sharing some of the firm’s most recent, and exciting, projects from around the country and walking through the inner workings of his distinctive approach—from concrete techniques to the more emotional and intuitive aspects of his process—showing how he brings his projects to life and fills them with soul.

Please join Breeze Glazer, Program Director of Healthcare Design at NYSID and Sustainable Healthcare Leader, Senior Associate at Perkins+Will, in a lecture and panel discussion about his firm’s campaign to promote product transparency in the building industry. This annual lecture honors the memory of NYSID faculty member, Sally Henderson, who developed the College’s first course in green design.

Wharton Esherick: Synthesizing Art, Design, Crafts, Architecture

Michael Graves Architecture & Design: The Art of Integrated Design

Design historian, Daniella Ohad, will moderate a panel discussion between Carolyn Coal, filmmaker, Dr. Robert Aibel, collector, scholar, and dealer, and Paul Eisenhauer, former executive director and curator of the Wharton Esherick Museum following the screening of I Am Known as an Artist, a documentary focusing on the godfather of the Studio Furniture Movement and inventor of Art Furniture, Wharton Esherick. Support for this program was provided by Rago Art and Moderne Gallery. Reception to follow the lecture. Screening duration is 41 min.

Join Karen Nichols, FAIA, Principal, and Donald Strum, IDSA, Principal at Michael Graves Architecture & Design as they discuss the firm’s integrated multi-disciplinary practice. Using specific examples from hospitality and the workplace, Karen and Donald will show how the interior design of their projects marries architecture and products, promotes humanistic environments, and creates value for the user experience. Rethinking Luxury at One Hudson Yards

Making America Modern

Join Andre Kikoski, founder of Andre Kikoski Architect, as he gives an inside look into one of their recent high profile NYC projects, a residential tower at Hudson Yards. Andre will walk through the unique material palette crafted specifically for One Hudson Yards. As one of the first buildings built at the city’s largest mixed-use real estate construction sites, Andre Kikoski Architect wanted to set the tone and future direction for what’s to come. Marilyn F. Friedman will introduce her new book Making America Modern: Interior Design in the 1930s, which chronicles the evolution of modern interior design in the U.S. during the 1930s. She will discuss interiors by such design luminaries as Donald Deskey, Cedric Gibbons, Eleanor Le Maire, William Lescaze, Tommi Parzinger, Gilbert Rohde, and Russel Wright.
