WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS PRACTICALITY
ON THE COVER Ara Kim ’19 Master of Fine Arts Thesis Project: Hotel McQueen Featured on our cover, recent alumna Ara Kim’s thesis project, Hotel McQueen, is a luxury hotel and a tribute to the life and work of the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen. “The Butterfly Effect,” the basis of Chaos Theory, is the concept that something as minute as the flapping of a butterfly’s wings can have unpredictable outsized effects, and result in a hurricane, in a complex natural system. This was the inspiration for the look and mood of the hotel: Kim envisioned a butterfly generating a storm from its wings, a potent metaphor for the brilliant and chaotic life of Alexander McQueen, who struggled with drug addiction and died at the age of 40. The motif of the butterfly emerged over and over in McQueen’s work, in everything from textiles that mimicked the patterns of Pink Morphos and Tiger Wings, to silk tuxedo jackets that unfurled outwards from the waist like wings. Kim echoes McQueen’s visual language in details like a filmy linen curtain in a transparent guest-room shower, ethereal light fixtures made of glass tubing fabric, and textiles that evoke the wings of butterflies. The interior design industry has already taken note of Ara’s exceptional design skills. As a winner of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Student Portfolio Competition and recipient of other industry awards even before graduation, Ara’s career is truly taking flight.

SENIOR STORIES: BAILEY AND VICTORIA When Victoria Bartholomew ’20 and Bailey McGrath ’20 met as roommates at NYSID’s summer precollege program, they had no idea that five years later, they’d share an apartment and be just months away from earning their BFA degrees. What they did know was that their passion for interior design went deeper than a casual interest. For Victoria, choosing NYSID meant answering the question of whether a smaller, focused college was the right place for her. Upon completion of the precollege program, she knew NYSID was the place, and the two things she questioned early on have turned into her two favorite things about the school. “I love that the school is focused with faculty that are actively working in the interior design industry, and yet accessible. There’s no ‘professor hierarchy’ here where you can’t talk to the main professor. The faculty truly know the students, and they push us to tap into our instincts, backgrounds, and preferences for our design work. Their aim is for our work to be near-professional
Victoria came to NYSID with a focus on residential design, but her first internship in commercial design radically shifted that focus. “The need for a simple, straightforward approach to take on the complexities of hospitality (hotels & restaurants) design is exciting and highly appealing to me.” Her five-year goal? To be invited back to speak at NYSID. “I loved all the speakers I listened to as a student, and it would be rewarding to give back to the school. I know I’ve got the education and experience to do something amazing after graduation!”

confidence gathered from her summer
For Bailey, pursuing her interior design dreams at NYSID was understanding that it’s not the typical undergraduate experience, many high school students seek. “The campus is New York City, and my classes are a mix of recent grads as well as students with a range of career experiences. But I visit my high school friends at other schools, have a good time and then can’t wait to get back to New York City and my NYSID classes. This is exactly I want to be doing!” Now embarking on their senior year, the talk is about deciding on their senior thesis topics, and excitement about life after NYSID.
internship with Daniel Romualdez as well as having had her design selected and installed at the prestigious Nantucket By Design. Her answer to “NYSID in Three Words”? “Informed. Professional. Community. Informed, because I’ll be graduating with an incredible depth of knowledge on things critical to my success. Professional, because I loved being surrounded by other people/ students who brought other design experience to classes. Community, because I’m incredibly connected to all my classmates. We know each other and help each other without question. It’s community at its best.”

UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM Each of our undergraduate offerings feeds into the next. If you’re not quite ready to commit to the Bachelor of Fine Arts program, you can begin with a certificate or an associate’s degree. The credits you earn can be applied directly toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts if and when you choose to continue with your education.
PROJECT SPOTLIGHT Lydia Radandt ’18 Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis Project: ROOTS at Pier 57 ROOTS is a mixed-use residential and commercial model that connects urban individuals to the natural processes behind the food that they consume. Lydia envisioned an environment that provides the neighborhood of Chelsea with locally grown produce, the opportunity for local businesses to get involved by providing ROOTS with compostable waste, and luxury residences within public spaces. Says Lydia, “I wanted to create a self-sustaining residential model that reaches outward to the community, motivating individuals from all socioeconomic backgrounds and local retailers to get involved in the life cycle of their food.”

Interior Design from the Inside Out
Interior design is all about how we experience spaces. It’s a powerful, essential part of our daily lives and affects how we live, work, play, and even heal. Comfortable homes, functional workplaces, beautiful public spaces— that’s interior design at work.
The best interior designers make it look easy, crafting spaces that anticipate our needs and appeal to our emotions, but in reality a broad set of skills and technical knowledge is required. Interior design has changed dramatically since the early 20th century, when it was just beginning to emerge as a profession. To become a successful interior designer today, you need a well-rounded education and the skills to work within many disciplines (architecture; graphic design; decorative arts; and textile,

You can start your own practice, work for a firm, or specialize in a particular skill (such as lighting) or a specific area (such as hospitality). PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION Education is the best way to get the skills you need to succeed. And in a culture that increasingly embraces DIY design, a degree gives you the credentials required to compete and get clients’ attention. With its strong professional focus, a New York School of Interior Design education gives you access to internships and designers with real-world experience—invaluable connections that will serve you throughout your career. The design industry's awareness of our unparalleled education is evident in our post-graduation outcomes, as 100% of undergraduates and 100% of graduates either hold jobs related to their field of study within six months or are pursuing further education (2018).
ACCREDITATION New York School of Interior Design is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), and the College’s BFA and the MFA-1 programs are accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). Accreditation is a voluntary activity initiated by the institution that requires a rigorous self-evaluation and an independent, objective appraisal of the overall educational quality by peers. Accreditation is important for many reasons, but first and foremost it ensures that the institution’s academic programs meet acceptable levels of quality. It also helps employers determine whether a graduate is qualified, assists institutions in determining acceptability of transfer credits, and provides a basis for determining eligibility for federal student assistance.
