WHAT IS INTERIOR DESIGN TODAY? The best interior designers make it look easy, crafting spaces that anticipate our needs and appeal to our emotions, but in reality a broad set of skills and technical knowledge is required. Interior design has changed dramatically since the early 20th century when it was just beginning to emerge as a profession. Today, interior designers work with contractors, architects, engineers, craftsmen, furniture dealers, and business and home owners. To become a successful interior designer, you need a well-rounded education and the skills to work within many disciplines (architecture; graphic design; decorative arts; and textile, furniture, and lighting design). Interior designers are expected to have working knowledge of: • Textiles, materials, color, space planning, sustainability, and more • Software applications for 2D and 3D computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM) • Structural requirements, health and safety issues, and building codes

Career Options Within the field of interior design, there are a wealth of career options. You can start your own practice, work for a small or large firm, or specialize in a particular skill (such as lighting) or a specific area (such as hospitality). The possibilities are endless—and they’re expanding every day. Interior design is a smart career path. According to the American Society of Interior Designers, “Interior design is a strong and growing sector. The number of interior designers has grown by 11.9% since 2015, with 29% of firms looking to hire this year.”

You can focus 100% on interior design, because it’s what we do. We offer more than 200 courses across nine different degree programs, all seen through the lens of interior design. No other school or program offers such variety.
PERSONAL ATTENTION NYSID is a small school and a tightly knit community. With an average class size of 13 and a 10 to 1 student-to-faculty ratio, you won’t get lost in the shuffle. You’ll have real relationships with your instructors—and you won’t spend your days in lecture halls.
JOBS You’ll be on track for a great job. From the courses we offer to the faculty we hire, our primary goal is to make sure you’re ready to find real, rewarding work as an interior designer. The New York School of Interior Design is a great learning institution because of its faculty. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds and bring practical and theoretical experience from their professional lives. We have more than 100 faculty members who are practicing designers at many of the top design firms in the country: Gensler, HOK, Perkins + Will, Rockwell Group, and Robert A.M. Stern Architects to name a few. Many are also principals of their own firms—for instance, Kati Curtis of Kati Curtis Design, Stefan Steil of Steilish, and Warren Ashworth of his self-titled architecture firm.

New York is home of world-renowned cultural institutions: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and many more. Student life at NYSID revolves around events for socializing, having fun, and enhancing life as a professional designer. For example, we offer behind-the-scenes tours of designer showrooms; Supporting the Whole Designer workshops that teach job preparation and interview skills; wellness programs that help designers access their creativity; and the opportunity to work on community service projects for organizations like Habitat for Humanity.

Study Abroad
“The study abroad trip to Florence with Maria Chamberlin-Hellman was like having our own personal tour guide through the Renaissance. The way we looked at and discussed art, frescoes, and landmarks gave me an entirely new perspective on the city. It was really a treat to see things through her expert eyes.” —CARRIE ANNE LI (MFA-1, 2016)

Every year, NYSID faculty members lead small groups of students overseas and share their insider’s knowledge of local design. Destinations have included such cities as Barcelona, Beijing, Istanbul, Florence, London, Paris, and Shanghai. In addition to visiting well-known destinations, students have access to private spaces and get behind-the-scenes tours of design firms, historic homes, and artists’ studios. Recently, NYSID students travelled to Ning’er County in China’s Yunnan Province for a two-week design charrette with students from Peking University. Together, they came up with designs for a dormitory for Ning’er High School and an exhibition hall that was destroyed in the 2007 earthquake that struck the region.

The firm caters to high-end luxury residential and commercial projects, and clients have included Madonna and former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg. “I did an internship at the firm twice during my time in the BFA program. It was a great experience and I learned so much working on actual residential projects. It was a dream internship, and it gave me the connections to later return as a full-time designer at one of the best interior design firms.�

We have deep connections in the interior design community as well as an impressive track record of helping students build meaningful professional relationships and essential work experience. Students have gotten internships—and alumni have landed jobs—at prestigious commercial and private firms: Bunny Williams Inc.; Gensler; HOK; Huniford Design Studio; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; Michael Graves & Associates; and Yabu Pushelberg to name just a few. Faith is in her third year of the BFA program, and is spending her summer interning at Huniford Design Studio, an interior and furniture design firm in NYC. “I've learned so much about what it takes to run a successful, structured business. I get to work closely with the senior designers and have my hands in multiple client projects. I create product tearsheets, source client specific furniture and material, and create design schedules. I also got the opportunity to go on a two day install in the Hamptons with my colleagues. It's amazing when you see a project you've helped work on come to life right before your eyes!�

Roger studied biochemistry in Taiwan before coming to NYSID. “I knew there was some element missing from my life. It was exciting when I realized that interior design is what I really wanted to do. Now I work in hospitality design at Yabu Pushelberg, one of my favorite design firms. I'm working on various projects including two luxury condo developments in New York City and a hotel elsewhere in the U.S. Going to school at NYSID changed my life and I feel very fortunate to be on this new journey.”

Mary was a professional ballet dancer with American Ballet Theatre (ABT) before deciding that she wanted to follow her passion and go back to school for interior design. “I wasn’t initially sure whether or not I wanted to pursue a BFA in interior design, but after a semester in the BID program, I realized I had found something very special. I decided to enroll in the BFA program, graduated after four years of study, and landed a job right away at Williams Blackstock Architects, where I’ve been putting my education into practice. NYSID did a wonderful job preparing me for the work I now do as a professional.”

Steven is a principal at his namesake firm, Steven R. Kaplan\Architect. “Some students wonder why they need to learn hand-drawing in a computer-assisted age. Others think to themselves, ‘Why do I need to know what goes on behind the wall, if I'm only interested in designing the surface?’ I take each student seriously, and try to open their eyes to why these skills and knowledge matter to them, and to how this will empower them when they achieve their goal of becoming professional designers. Because all NYSID classes, even online classes, are small, I am able to encourage dialogue and questions. I soon get to know all my students by name, and can be their ally as they surmount their individual challenges—it’s very satisfying to see students overcome their anxieties, and succeed.”

Erin had a career in accounting for five years before enrolling at NYSID. “After working very long hours doing something I was not enjoying, I realized accounting was not what I wanted to do long-term. Although making a career change often seemed like a daunting task, I have never regretted my decision one bit. The MFA-1 program has provided me with a superb foundation in all things interior design. I wouldn't be where I am today without the expertise of many wonderful teachers and advisers at NYSID. The tools I've been given over the past two years have given me confidence in the work I produce as I begin my final year and start to look for full-time employment.”

If you have a bachelor’s degree in a field unrelated to design, our MFA-1 is a full-time program that provides a fundamental and comprehensive interior design education in just three years. If you’re ready for an overall introduction to the field of interior design and are interested in building a portfolio, our one-year Basic Interior Design certificate might be for you. Although it’s a non-degree program, your credits can be applied to an AAS or BFA. Edwin is a founding partner of In Situ Design, a New York-based firm that designs a range of projects from homes to hotels, restaurants to offices. One of his most recent projects, The William Hotel (a collaboration with fellow NYSID instructor William Engel), won accolades for its colorful approach and the way it blurs the lines between art, architecture, and interior design. Edwin brings his design approach into the classroom. “It is really the rigor of the design process that I try to instill in my students. At In Situ we draw and draw and draw. There is no leap straight to a design solution. Even the best ideas require extensive exploration to resolve.”

After researching NYSID’s top-ranked graduate program and visiting the campus, I knew I wanted to attend and study in the nation’s design capital. Not only did the MFA program provide me with the credentials to be a professor, I also received an invaluable education with rich and rewarding design experiences. I was fortunate to start my design career immediately after graduation, and for the past several years I have enjoyed working on corporate interiors for Gensler.”

The College offers housing to students at a modern residential facility at 97th Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan, operated by Educational Housing Services.
Our Open Houses–offered in the fall (October) and in the spring (April) are a great way to learn about the numerous fields within the profession, and how our degree and certificate programs will give you the knowledge, technical skills, and credentials you need to succeed. You’ll get to hear from faculty and students, see student work, and tour our facilities. Admissions staff, a financial aid officer, and academic advisors are always available to answer any questions at these events.

Financial assistance is available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are matriculated and in good academic standing. An applicant is considered for financial aid upon completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA). The FASFA should be completed online at fasfa.ed.gov. SCHOLARSHIPS All NYSID scholarships are awarded based on merit. To be considered, applicants must have all admission materials submitted by the recommended deadline (February 1 for the fall, October 1 for the spring), must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, and must study full-time (12 or more credits per semester). All qualified applicants will be considered for scholarship review; no additional materials are required.
