Summer Pre-College Program for High School Students

Stop Watching. Start Designing! If you can’t get enough of the “before” and “after” room transformations on home design shows, we invite you to join us this summer to design your own “before and after.” New York School of Interior Design’s Summer Pre-College program offers high school students (rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors) with a passion for interiors the opportunity to truly experience and understand life as a designer. It’s the perfect way to see if your passion will become your profession.

As a Summer Pre-College student, you’ll learn the basic “How To’s” of interior design by the professional designers who teach our undergraduate and graduate classes. Your summer learning experience will include:    Understanding a floor plan—opportunities and challenges    G etting started on your basic drafting skills (everyone has to start somewhere!)   Developing your design concept   Putting together a dynamic color scheme   Choosing furniture and materials for the space and desired “look”    A “backstage pass” experience visiting firms to see the design world in action   Visits to special showrooms and design shops around NYC—the nation’s design capital You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve in just a few short weeks! Pre-College I students design a small apartment; Pre-College II students (Pre-College I is required first) design a hospitality space such as a hotel lobby or small cafe. The projects you develop will help build your college portfolio, and attendance at Summer Pre-College will earn you one NYSID undergraduate credit for each course you complete.

STUDENT PERSPECTIVES BFA seniors Bailey McGrath and Victoria Bartholomew met as Summer Pre-College roommates and have stayed friends ever since. Now on the verge of graduating with their BFAs from NYSID, here’s what they had to say about their Pre-College experience.

Before I attended Pre-College, I really didn’t know that much about the details of interior design as a career, but I had a strong interest in it, and I completed the program fully confident this was the career for me. My mom had been nervous about me attending such a focused college, but once she saw the amazing work I produced after just a few weeks, she knew I was choosing the right career for me. The design work I did at Pre-College really helped with my applications to a range of design schools. While I had several options, I ultimately chose NYSID, because I trusted the depth of education offered and it just felt like “home” after having attended Summer Pre-College. BAILEY MCGRATH ’20 (BFA)

NYSID Pre-College program solidified that interior design was the career I wanted and ultimately, the college I wanted to study at. I was serious, and excited by the work right from the start and it gave me a great introduction to the industry and awareness of skills I’d need to be successful. VICTORIA BARTHOLOMEW ’20 (BFA)
