FROM THE CEO

Big week for the events industry Whew – what a week for the events industry! The first week of August brought the much anticipated Eventing the Future conference and culminated with the New Zealand Event Awards evening. Both were well attended, hugely successful, and the realisation of an enormous amount of work by all involved. Congratulations to the Eventing the Future team

who once again delivered a fantastic event. This year’s record turn-out proved this event is an important fixture in the industry calendar. The line-up of speakers offered something for everyone. A highlight for me certainly included Neelay Bhatt and his opening session on creating Magical Experiences – his message of going the extra mile to deliver positive experiences for all attending our events rang true for our

increasingly competitive events market. Congratulations too to all the winners at the New Zealand Event Awards. The finalists list made impressive reading, so the winners can be exceedingly proud of taking out the Awards. We are thrilled with this year’s Awards programme; from the record number of entries received to the dedicated judges and the amazing turn

out for the Dinner, we feel that the Awards programme has achieved the traction and recognition this industry deserves. We can’t wait for next year! For those not able to attend the conference, we hope to connect with you at one of our networking and seminar events in the near future. Vicki Watson CEO, NZAEP

New national sporting event for Lake Karapiro SOURCE: Waikato Times, 10 August 2016 A new national water sports event has been confirmed for Lake Karapiro. In April next year it will host the New Zealand Dragon Boating (NZDB) National Championships for the first time. NZDB Developing Director Shane Petley said the event is alternated between the North Island and South Island each year, but new venues are needed for both. Previously, the North Island event has been held at the Blue Lake in Rotorua. “We were looking for better facilities because we didn’t even have a proper starting platoon. “We were investigating it but it was going to costs tens of thousands of dollars to get something set up,” he said. The South Island event took place on Hood Lake in Ashburton, but he hoped to find a venue closer to

Queenstown. Dragon boating is a paddling water sport, where 20 people sit 10 abreast and paddle over distances of 200 metres, 500m and 2000m. It’s been going in New Zealand for about 30 years and often attracts more than 1000 competitors. Petley said if it goes well, there could be the chance to host international dragon boating events at Lake Karapiro. Mighty River Domain site manager Liz Stolwyk said it was an exciting event to host, and that it would be a big economic benefit to the area. “It’s a real community event with excellent sportsmanship. It’s competitive, and it’s one of those sports that fits under the Waipa Home of Champions branding.” She said it was great to have a range of events at the lake that weren’t just rowing.

CREDIT: EMMA JAMES/FAIRFAX MEDIA In 2015, events at Mighty River Domain brought millions of dollars into the local economy, including $4.5m from Waka Ama and $7.5m from Maadi Cup. is an international event in February, Maadi Cup, the dragon boating, and the World Rowing Masters, and those are just the big ones!” There is something happening there almost every weekend. She said Mighty River Domain is yet to turn anyone down, but its shoulder season keeps getting wider and wider.

CREDIT: Hero Images SOURCE: Stuff.co.nz, 8 August 2016 Auckland is set to host one of the biggest sporting events in its history, and it needs volunteers to pull it off. The World Masters Games are coming up next year with organisers needing to recruit up to 4000 volunteers. Games chief executive Jennah Wootten says not since the 2011 Rugby World Cup and the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, have so many volunteers been required in Auckland for a sporting event. “Volunteers are the support team, helping athletes to achieve their personal best and play a vital role in ensuring the Games run smoothly and are an enjoyable experience for all,” she says. “They will be an ambassador for World Masters Games 2017 from now, till the event.” The World Masters Games is the largest multi-sport event in the world. In terms of athlete numbers, it’s bigger in scale than even the Olympics, Wootten says. It is also the largest event New Zealand will host in at least the next decade.

Events Update, August 2016

Auckland will host the event from April 21-30, with 25,000 athletes competing in 28 sports across 48 competition venues. The event is expected to generate over 240,000 visitor nights and $30.8m GDP for Auckland alone. “We are looking for volunteers who have a positive attitude, the ability to work well in a team environment, are approachable and friendly and ‘go the extra mile’,” Wootten says. “Many of our current applicants (1500) have connections with a variety of community organisations, not all exclusively sport. We’ve also received a number of applications from international students studying in Auckland.” Wootten says events of this size and scale do not come around often. “To be able to be part of one of the world’s greatest sporting events first hand, will be a special time for everyone involved. “Auckland and the Waikato region will be a great place to be in April next year. The World Masters Games will create an amazing buzz and will be an occasion for everyone to enjoy.”

Hawke’s Bay Arts event ‘bigger and better’ SOURCE: Hawke’s Bay Today, 5th August 2016 Ten days of entertainment and inspiration were unveiled this month with the launch of the 2016 Harcourts Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival programme. Following the inaugural festival last year - which featured 49 performances, and the sale of 9000 tickets - the second annual event promised a “bigger, better, and bolder” 12 days of arts and culture. Held at the Hastings Community Arts Centre last night, more than 200 people had their appetites whet with snippets of the festival - from dance and theatre performances, to visual art events - before its programme was revealed. From October 4 to 16, Kiwi artists would be joined by those from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America to entertain, educate, and

As well as favourite’s from last year, the programme included new attractions, like the Festival Garden, and events, including works from Maori, and Pacific perspectives. mayor Lawrence Yule said the festival had filled a major gap left by the closure of the Opera House, and before it people had been missing something in the “arts and cultural side of life”. He applauded organisers’ ability, as to go from being “out on a limb last year, with no time, no money, and a new concept, to this point is simply outstanding”. Festival director Pitsch Leiser thanked their partners, benefactors, and supporters, offering them the first glimpse of this year’s festival. He said he was excited to present the 2016 programme, which was bigger, and had been more challenging than last year’s. “We’re going into more venues, so we have the option to feature different kinds of performances than we did last year,” he said. “The heart of the festival is still [The Famous] Speigeltent in Havelock North ... but we’ve been able to expand in a way that allows other people from

Events Update, August 2016

Hawke’s Bay to experience it.” As well as the venue in Havelock North’s domain, the festival’s 55 shows would be spread across venues from Napier’s Municipal Theatre, to the Hastings City Art Gallery. Mr Leiser said he hoped Hawke’s Bay residents would take the opportunity to explore something new, and to experience the national and international talent which would be visiting the region. “They can go on an adventure and [discover] something new to enrich their lives,” he said. Creative Hastings treasurer Cynthia Bowers said she was very excited for the start of the festival, and already had a list of shows she was hoping to see. The 2015 festival had been well supported, she said, but it was good to see the amount of new people behind this year’s event. “There’s such a buzz of excitement,” she said.

Inaugural event to promote Maori Need music gets thumbs up in Taranaki guidance

SOURCE: Taranaki Daily Times, 7 August 2016 The first ever Maori Music Month is a chance to showcase new talent and promote the use of Te Reo, says an award winning Taranaki radio announcer. Launched in August, Maori Music Month or Te Marama Puoru Waiata Maori will become an annual event, similar to New Zealand Music Month which is held every May. Designed to promote new performers and waiata, Te Korimako o Taranaki radio host Te Poihi Campbell said it also provided another platform for people to hear Te Reo Maori being used. “By default, it also shares and promotes the language and the talent that is out there in Aotearoa,” Campbell said. Following the launch, a group of high profile Maori

musicians, including Rob Ruha, Maisey Rika and Tama Waipara, will serve as ambassadors and over the course of this month will host workshops around the country, which are focused on the use of Maori musical instruments, song writing and vocal training.

While Taranaki will miss out, Campbell said many of the new waiata which are being promoted throughout August were already being played on Te Korimako o Taranaki, which is one of the 21 iwi radio stations dotted around New Zealand. “The main objective of Maori Music Month is to promote and ensure that there is a bit of reach out into the wider communities with these waiata,” he said. Campbell hosts a two-hour, weekday show, called Pupuke Te Hihiri, a program which had earned him and the station success in recent times.

After taking out top honours for Best Maori Language Broadcast at the New Zealand Radio Awards this year, he won a similar gong at the Iwi Radio Awards, along with the prestigious Te Reo iwi accolade. While Te Korimako would keep doing its bit to promote Te Reo Maori in the region, he hoped the other radio stations would also play their part. “Hopefully our mainstream partners can promote Maori language and promote Maori Music Month as we do here 24/7, all year round,” he said. Poi E by the Patea Maori Club remains the only Te Reo song to ever reach the number one spot on the New Zealand pop charts. The movie which chronicles the success of the tune, called Poi E: The Story of Our Song, was is showing in cinemas nationwide.

Criteria for the top slot was to position an event to occur outside the peak summer season, attract national and international visitors to Whanganui, support Whanganui’s reputation in arts, culture and heritage

and utilise our venues and sportsgrounds. “I know they said it was a very tough decision to make and wanted to ensure we would support all the finalists in bringing their events about” said Lyn Cheyne, Whanganui and Partners Promotions and Marketing Manager. “We most certainly will be doing that.” Judges Blair Jagusch, General Manager of Orange Productions, Simon Phillips,

Director of Regions, NZ Maori Tourism, Petrina Maxwell, Founder of Agent 86 Events and Kathy Cunningham, Empire PR and Events and CEO of Wanganui Events Trust, were fantastic judges and have offered ongoing advice to all the finalists. Greg Ward, managing director Continental, says both Hirepool and Continental believe the sale and merge is an exciting and positive step towards creating the best marquee and equipment hire business in New Zealand. ‘The combined business will have a greater reach across the country and an even wider range of upto-date marquees and event equipment to deliver spectacular looking events.’ NEW NAME FOR NAPIER’S CENTRE SOURCE: Meeting Newz, 12 July 2016 The Napier City Council has approved changing

the name of the Napier War Memorial Conference Centre to the Napier Conference Centre. With the planned relocation of the war memorial feature formerly housed in the Marine Parade facility to Memorial Square, the name was no longer considered relevant.

Event organisers and promoters planning events in the Auckland region from July 2017 onwards now have an opportunity to apply for sponsorship.

The Napier Conference Centre is currently closed for earthquake strengthening, extensions and refurbishment, and is due to reopen early in 2017.

ATEED runs an annual contestable funding round every year, and is calling for applications from New Zealand and overseas for major multi-year and oneoff events happening from 1 July 2017 onwards.

The war memorial part of the facility’s name has caused marketing confusion in the past, says Napier City Council venues manager Glenys Fraser, particularly amongst potential Australian clientele.

The contestable sponsorship fund for 2017/18 is approximately $1.5 million. ATEED’s targets for its 2017/18 major events portfolio is a regional return on investment of $49 million and 165,000 visitor nights.

‘We’ve spoken to possible clients at trade shows, for example, who have imagined the facility to be similar to their league clubs or services club rooms.’

The sponsorship application period for events scheduled in the Auckland region from 1 July 2017 onwards is open until Wednesday, 24 August. The sponsorship round gives priority to events that

align with Auckland’s Major Events Strategy. All events are assessed for their ability to generate GDP for Auckland (money that would not otherwise be spent in the region), increase domestic and international visitors nights, build awareness of Auckland internationally, and make Auckland an interesting and exciting place to live. IRONMAN EVENT TO STAY IN TAUPO Taupo will remain the home of Ironman for the next five years as organisers sign a deal with Taupo District Council and Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board. The upcoming Ironman event in March will be the 19th time Taupo has hosted the event after its initial 14 years in Auckland. With more than 30,000 participants from more than 60 countries the Ironman event is a big boost for Taupo which is packed full of visitors for each event.

Auckland welcomes Rugby League World Cup 2017 matches SOURCE: ATEED Release, 19 July 2016 Auckland looks forward to welcoming rugby league fans next year, when it hosts two matches in the Rugby League World Cup 2017 (RLWC2017). Auckland has been confirmed as one of the host cities for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia, with Papua New Guinea to stage three pool games, from 27 October – 2 December 2017. Auckland will host the opening New Zealand pool match and the semi-final. Both matches will be played at Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium. Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse, who attended the RLWC2017 launch in Auckland today, says confirmation of the two

Auckland matches is welcome news for the region and rugby league in Auckland. “Auckland has 33 rugby league clubs, more than 14,000 players and is the proud home of both the Vodafone Warriors and the Downer NRL Auckland Nines, not to mention New Zealand’s number one league fan and ambassador, Sir Peter Leitch. “The number one-ranked Kiwis will begin their World Cup campaign in Auckland with their opening match against Samoa. With the semi-final also being held here, Aucklanders and visitors will see some amazing league. “Hosting these two matches lets people see world-class league, and lets us welcome and show off our region to league fans from around the

world.” Auckland’s RLWC2017 matches will be supported by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), which invests in major events on behalf of Auckland Council to realise social and economic benefits for the region. ATEED is investing $600,000 in the Auckland RLWC2017 matches. They are expected to inject $2.29 million in to the local economy, including generating more than 12,653 visitor nights. More than 50,000 people are expected to attend the Auckland matches (across the two matches). ATEED General Manager External Relations Steve Armitage says the RLWC2017 matches form part of a massive Auckland events calendar for 2017.

“That’s in addition to the thousands of visitors who come for our annual events portfolio, with favourites like the ASB Classic, the Downer NRL Auckland Nines, the ITM Supersprint and our unmissable large-scale cultural festivals like Pasifika and the new Tamaki Herenga Waka Festival,” says Steve Armitage. “As Auckland’s economic development agency, we support these events because they deliver benefits for our economy and our people. They attract thousands of visitors, create excitement and buzz for people who live, work and study here, generate money for the local economy, and raise our profile internationally.”

“More than 60,000 overseas and Kiwi visitors are expected to flock to Auckland next year, for the World Masters Games in April, the NZ Lions Series in June and July, and the Rugby League World Cup in October and November.

Game on for Marlborough Supersports event SOURCE: Marlborough Express, 3 August 2016 A new sports event is under starter’s orders to help raise vital funds for the region’s younger population. The Marlborough Youth Trust is getting set to stage the region’s first Supersports, which will give teams a taster in a range of games. Participants will compete in a diverse selection of pursuits ranging from swimming and archery to orienteering, bowls and darts. Organiser Jodye Tomalin says the three-day event, based on one launched in South Waikato, will be a great way to get families involved and boost community camaraderie. “The event is a sporting competition that includes

the whole community, with a definite winner at the end. However, because the event covers a wide spectrum of skills and activities there is never a dominant competitor or team. “The wide age spread means the young are rubbing shoulders with older competitors. Often the more mature competitors end up teaching younger competitors how to compete; with a smile on their face and in good spirit. There is huge camaraderie and community spirit involved in an event like this.” Entrants from South Waikato will join the Marlborough teams and Jodye says there is the chance the Supersports could become an annual interregion competition.
