management students and event professionals to see behind the scenes during the delivery of a major cultural festival – and keen applicants are now being sought. The third annual festival takes place at the Viaduct Events Centre and Viaduct Harbour on Auckland Anniversary Weekend (27 – 29 January 2018), with the one-day observer programme happening on Saturday, 27 January. Successful applicants will meet and talk with the festival production team, and attend a live brief in the on-site operations centre (OSOC), where all the key event staff meet to discuss the status of the event, any immediate issues and how to solve them.

They will go backstage to the ‘green room’, watch the stage manager in action and chat with the back of house coordinator; meet the stalls manager to get an overview of the importance of stall operating conditions and food safety; and get an insight into the event kaupapa. ATEED’s major events observer and intern programmes helps to meet an Auckland Major Events Strategy objective to build capability in the local events industry. People interested in taking part should email tamakifest@aucklandnz. com, and tell the team about themselves, their whakapapa, studies or work, and how taking part in the observer

Queenstown Winter Games expected to become annual after reaching record heights in 2017 SOURCE: Stuff.co.nz, 8 September 2017 Winter Games NZ organisers are confident they have pleased key sponsor Audi Quattro enough at this year’s event to get the nod to become annual, rather than remain in its biennial status. Winter Games NZ chief executive Arthur Klap said this year’s event had brought in a record number of 930 athletes from 39 countries and a high number of spectators to the sports over the past 17 days. “We have to wait four to five weeks for a series of reports on numbers, but every indication is it has been a record event in most respects.” Klap said after receiving confirmation the government would fund the event $1million per year for the next four years, there was only one sponsor they needed to convince to stick with the event before they could confirm going annual. The sponsorship deal with Audi Quattro runs out in November this year, which means they would need to secure the German car maker’s deal again.

“The status of the games is now extremely high. In its fifth year now, so we are slowly building on what we have, and it’s getting bigger. “We are very confident sponsors are likely to stay on, I am very optimistic on the games becoming annual.” If it does, the Winter Games will take place in the same two-week period at the end of August 2018. Klap said the timing worked well this year as they had the best snow the games had seen over the five times it has been held in Queenstown. Klap said one of the biggest differences of the games this year was the noticeable increase in interest from international media, and admitted this would have had a lot to do with the Winter Olympic Games beginning next year in PyeongChang. “The coverage and content on social media is considerably up on previous years, there has been lots of interest, much higher than previous years.” While all events at the games were held successfully, barring two days of bad weather, games organisers will again revisit the schedule and look to add or take away

The 2013 games recorded around the same athlete numbers as this year, however more sports were involved and Klap said entries in these sports was a major upsurge on the 2015 entries. The biggest reason for the upturn in numbers and calibre was the fact the athletes were looking to qualify for the Olympics, the X Games and the Freeride World Tour events. Klap said partners such as the FIS and the Freeride World Tour world cups are pushing for the event to be annual and have ensured their athletes would take part. The Winter Games NZ is often treated by

international athletes as a training ground before their international season begins in the US and Europe. Unlike previous games, this year events were held across seven venues - Snowfarm, Treble Cone, Naseby, Coronet Peak, Remarkables, Cardrona and the Queenstown Ice Arena. The closing ceremony would be held a day early up Cardrona Ski Field as a dose of bad weather was predicted for Saturday. Therefore the only events to run on Saturday would be the Cross Country skiing up Snow Farm in Cardona Valley and also the third and final ice hockey test at the Queenstown Ice Arena

Auckland business events booming SOURCE: Meeting Newz Magazine, 12 September 2017 The economic value of events won by Auckland Convention Bureau (ACB), in conjunction with ACB members and industry partners, is valued at $46 million in the year ending July 2017, according to new

figures released by Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development (ATEED) this month. ACB, a division within ATEED’s destination business unit, has won 58 business events through its activity over the last financial year.

This has resulted in the region hosting more than 28,000 international and domestic delegates between June 2016 and July 2017, who stayed a total of 124,365 visitor nights.

AIMS Games ‘extremely successful’ SOURCE: Excerpt from Bay of Plenty Times, 18 September 2017

they did not add any new codes and some of the existing codes were at capacity.

The organisers of the Anchor AIMS Games will meet in the coming weeks to look at how to move the event forward and manage its rapidly growing size.

Other sports were and still are itching to get involved. “I’ve got a lot of codes that have put in applications to be introduced to the AIMS Games.”

This year was the largest AIMS Games so far, with more than 10,000 athletes from about 300 schools competing in Tauranga last week. Tournament director Vicki Semple said organisers never went out intending to make the event bigger, but each year that was exactly what happened. “We always debrief and then look at ways we can enhance the games and make them better...but not necessarily bigger.”

She said she and the other trustees would always look at quality over quantity when discussing and planning the next year’s event. Ms Semple said the number of spectators was also growing and she thought the city coped extremely well with the accommodation demand this year. “We got creative and I think we really did well to handle that increase.

Ms Semple said this year, apart from introducing para-athletes,

“We were absolutely delighted with how the week went and how the community got behind

“It’s definitely one of the biggest things that the city hosts. I reckon it would have to be the fullest week of the year, just judging by the fact that...the accommodation seems to be booked out, the roads are busy, there’s a certain buzz in the air.”

Arrowtown’s Night lighting plan for evening events SOURCE: Otago Daily Times, 14 September 2017

to enable evening events and specialist lighting.

More than 20 years after discussions first started, Arrowtown is about to be lit up, possibly paving the way for night-time events, such as a lantern festival.

Some of the buildings to be illuminated were Arrowtown’s pharmacy, The Post Office, the New Orleans Hotel, Coachman’s Hall, and the Athenaeum Hall.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council’s infrastructure committee recently adopted the village’s concept lighting design master plan, providing for ‘’appropriate and consistent’’ lighting in Arrowtown’s heritage zones.

New lighting would be discreet and, where possible, concealed from view.

Policy, Standards and Asset planner Polly Lambert said in her report the plan had been developed by lighting and technology designers Toulouse Group, in collaboration with the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association, the Arrowtown Trust, heritage groups including the Lakes District Museum and residents groups, including the Arrowtown Village Association. It was focused on Buckingham St and featured lighting of specific heritage buildings, including the council-owned Miner’s Cottages, but also had an aspect of future-proofing

‘’It is our intention that these heritage buildings become the jewels in the crown and are distinguished by retaining their original character.’’ It also proposed lamp-style street lighting, appropriate for an ‘’early rural mining town’’ along the main street.

The master plan also proposed up-lighting of the historic Miner’s Cottages,

and lighting of selected trees and features, including bronze sculptures on Marshal Park, and a water wheel outside the Lakes District Museum. ‘’With a new lighting design, we hope there will be increased evening visitors which may open the door to more nighttime events taking place, like music events, outdoor dinners,

aside - $27,000 in the 2016-17 annual plan, which was used to upgrade lighting for the Miner’s Cottages, a light and a pole on the library corner. Another $57,000 has been committed in the 2017-18 annual plan, pegged for the upgrading of lighting on council properties, sculptures, four trees, Buckingham Green and three street lights on Buckingham St.
