A DAIRY EFFLUENT CALCULATOR WITH SMARTS

EFFECTIVELY MANAGING EFFLUENT

is hugely important – to farmers and the environment. Making best use of farm effluent is one of the ways farmers can help improve water quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Dairy farmers nationwide have invested considerably in effluent infrastructure and management processes to ensure they comply 365 days of the year.

“Well-designed and constructed effluent storage provides a lot of benefits – better flexibility for irrigation, increased nutrient utilisation and peace of mind,” DairyNZ solutions and development lead advisor Adam Duker says.

DairyNZ has a range of effluent management resources to help farmers – a great example of dairy farmers’ levy at work.

How much storage do I need?

The newly-released DairyNZ online Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator (DESC) is the industry-agreed way to measure your storage requirement. We know no two farms are the same, and this calculator has the smarts to navigate the complexity of individual systems.

The calculator uses measurements from your farm, including farm infrastructure, management practices, and soil and climate data to determine the best fit storage volume unique to your Farm Dairy Effluent (FDE) system.

Help is at hand

DairyNZ recommends final calculations are completed by a suitably qualified person. They will provide you with validation the calculation is accurate. They are well placed to offer suggestions where system efficiencies can be improved, thereby reducing the total storage requirement for your farm.
