ETERNALLY GRATEFUL

I

remember seeing it for the first time, New Zealand Trucking magazine, issue one – March 1985. There was plenty of hearsay circulating in the months leading up to its release that a magazine for Kiwi truckers and enthusiasts was in the wings. The arrival of the promotional flyer a few weeks out removed any lingering doubt. In a world without cell phones or internet, validating rumour was never easy, and until the flyer appeared, it had all seemed too good to be true. All of a sudden there it was, the famous first cover with Trevor Woolston leaning out the driver’s door of his R600 Mack ‘Torquing Bulldog’, waving to the camera. I remember flicking through, wide-eyed and heart racing; all I could see was New Zealand trucks. It was so interesting reading the biography that accompanied Trev’s long overdue induction into the New Zealand Road Transport Hall of Fame recently. In it he speaks of being frustrated by the lack of New Zealand truck content, only the occasional page in Australia’s Truckin’ Life. Today it’s hard to imagine there was such a time. The reality is, his recollection now applied to every last one of us back in the day. David Lowe, Murray Foote, Ed Mansell, and Bryan Trim had set the world alight with the legendary Cavalcade of Trucks series, but in terms of a regular read, the Road Transport Association’s Transport News was a dour experience. Truckin’ Life and Truck and Bus from Australia, Truck magazine from the UK, and Overdrive from the US (If you could get it) was all we had. His moment of inspiration and – as is so often the case with blokes – the encouragement and belief he received from wife, Sue, marked a changing point in all our lives. Talk now to friends of the era and we all have stories about its arrival each month, where we bought it, and our favourite content of all time. It connected us with trucks we’d seen but knew little about, as well as those who owned and drove them. It got to the stage where the arrival of new high-end gear on the road would start the anticipation of when the ‘Trucking mag’ may pay them a visit. For me and others however, it’s a far bigger story. Trevor’s business partner in the venture was Jon Addison, the magazine’s original editor. John gave the truck-crazed, camera-toting fraternity an opportunity to see their images in print, and – equally as

thrilling – their name on a byline. It meant New Zealand Trucking was ‘our’ magazine in every way. You could be part of it; a philosophy and an ethos we hold to this day. If you have the passion, drive, and want to tell a story, the opportunity is there. Sadly, corporate owners aren’t so concerned with the preservation of original files, so it’s been a huge scanning exercise to bring you this first of three Christmas issues commemorating successive decades of the magazine. Selection has been both agony and ecstasy. I wish it could have been 500 pages long. To say at times there’s been robust conversations would be an understatement. Everyone in the selection squad has had their share of disappointment and we apologise if your beloved memory hasn’t made it. Poring over the old issues has been fantastic though, and there have been some laughs for sure. The magazine launched with a couple of real stir-ups in the hub meter tampering expose, chased hard with stories highlighting the inaccuracies of roadside weighing. It was a sure-fire way to get people talking in all corners of the industry and ignite an interest in the new publication. It’s also been an interesting walk through the change in our social fabric over the past 35 year. If we tried advertising booze, cigarettes, and escort agencies now, we probably wouldn’t have too long a future I suspect. Obviously the stories and advertisements for marques and products now consigned to history reminded us this great big world we live in is in all reality a much smaller place now, and that’s a sad thing. So here we go, The Best of New Zealand Trucking magazine 1985 – 1994. Thank you Trevor Woolston and Jon Addison for breaking the drought 35 years ago; thanks also to our wonderful staff and pool of contributors through the years, you create the heart and soul of the magazine. Last and most importantly, our readers, thank you all for your support of the masthead, and passion for trucks.
