The Oxfam Times DAILY NEWS FROM THE DELHI2014 CONFERENCE

Wednesday 3 September 2014 WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER

Yesterday was an exciting day of learning, exploration, and meaningful dialogue (not just exchanging statements!) Reflecting on the day, May Ling Chan, PG Hong Kong, said “I appreciated the ED session. Good energy and good conversation.” The day began with learning from the Labs (LAC, Pacific and South Africa). They are moving forward with full CD ownership. An open question is how learning will feed into Barcelona. Another highlight was the ED and CD fishbowl conversation with Winnie, Mark, Farah, Nisha and Jim. Great dialogue about mutual accountability, need for trust, request from CDs for clear timelines, and collaborative ways CDs were invited to help influence affiliate boards. CDs could also hear the tensions EDs face managing complexity with

external stakeholders and pressure to transform at such a high pace of change. Learning from Action Aid and Save the Children Both organizations have moved from programs in country to a national body. What can we learn?  DO have a compelling vision and build your plan around it  DO use the power of protagonists (this is people in this room and staff around the world)  Don’t bureaucratize the process. Make it light.  DON’T drag it out (applause broke out!) Let people affected have a say, but not manage the process (grumbles).

“The message we get from here will be heard loud and clear. WE need to be mutually accountable To Each other.” – JIM CLARK, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, OXFAM IRELAND

“Today’s conversation with the EDs was a highlight. It was good to see change from the ED perspective.” JOSE GARCIA BARAHONA PROGRAM DIRECTOR, DRC

“Trust doesn’t need timelines. It starts right now. We need to invest in a new organizational culture.” ANA MARIA MARTINEZ COUNTRY DIRECTOR, OXFAM “I want to see Delhi, but haven’t left the hotel!” Delhi is an exciting and dynamic city - full of contrasts. Do take a chance to leave the hotel and explore! Use taxis or tuk tuk (3 wheelers) - but negotiate a price before you set off . Drink plenty of water and don’t be surprised by attention from curious onlookers. Check out: Khan Market (10 min by tuk tuk), The Red Fort, Raj Ghat , the Crafts Museum and Chandi Chowk market - will give you a real feeling of the history and life in Delhi. Enjoy!
