MACHINES’ SHOW WITH PLASTIC PLASTICS, EASILY PROCESSABLE, MORE DURABLE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS AND MORE COST-EFFECTIVE THAN METALS, ARE USED EVERYWHERE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THIS PLASTIC AND RUBBER PRODUCING MACHINES INDUSTRY THAT PRODUCES THESE PLASTIC PRODUCTS CREATE 50 BILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF ECONOMICAL VOLUME WORLDWIDE, WHILE THE INDUSTRY IN TURKEY CONTINUES TO TAKE IMPORTANT STEPS TO BREAK THE HABIT OF IMPORTED MACHINES AND IS RANKED 21TH IN THE WORLD WITH 169 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF EXPORT.
M
ankind strives to develop materials that will provide benefits that are not found in natural products since the first ages of history. • 128
The development of plastic materials began with the use of natural materials such as chewing gum and shellac having properties of plastic and then continued with the development of chemically
modified natural materials such as rubber, nitrocellulose, collagen, galalith. Today, the fully synthetic materials that we know as modern plastics have a history of 100 years. Plastics are of organic origin,
such as wood, paper or wool, and raw materials such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and of course crude oil used in the production of plastics are also natural products. It is formed by the
polymerization of plastic, small molecule polymers and thus the formation of large molecule polymers, and by the addition of many additives. Plastic can be processed easily, more resistant to weather conditions than metals, and can be very cheaply used in many areas of the industry. In the modern world there are plastics everywhere the eye can get. From the clothes we wear to the houses we use and the cars we use, we can see plastics everywhere. Our children’s toys, televisions, and the computers we use, and even the toothbrush you use every day, a high proportion of plastic is used. In this sense, we can say that, as it is today, plastic materials will continue to be the preferred material in the future as it enables the balance between the needs of today and the environment. GERMANY, CHINA AND USA LEADS THE GLOBAL MARKET While Germany, China and Japan create the three biggest exporting countries in the world trade in plastic and rubber processing machines, USA, China and Mexico maintain their position as the three biggest importing countries. According to data from the UN Statistics Division, in 2017, 27.4 billion dollars’ worth of plastic and rubber processing machines were exported. Germany has the first place with 6 billion dollars’ worth of export, China is second with 4 billion dollars of export and Japan is in third place with 2.5 billion dollars of export. Turkey’s exports worth 169 million dollars is ranked 21st on the list of global exports in 2017. Again, according to data from the UN Statistics Division, imports of plastic
and rubber processing machines worth 27 billion dollars were realized in 2017, the US was the first with $ 3.5 billion imports, China was the second with $ 3 billion imports and Mexico was the third with $ 1.5 billion imports. . Turkey’s imports is ranked 13th in 583.1 million dollars in 2017 in the global import list. THE INDUSTRY IS RISING AT TURKEY Turkish Plastic Industry Research, Development and Education Foundation (PAGEV) published a study entitled “Turkey Plastic Processing Machinery Sector Monitoring Report 2017”, according to the study, 598 companies in Turkey manufacture plastic and rubber processing machines and their components and parts. %78 of these companies are established in İstanbul and %6 of them continue in İzmir. Plastics and rubber processing machinery production in Turkey between the years 2013-2017 showed an average annual increase of 11.2 percent, in 2017, the production of plastic and rubber
processing machines and their components and parts increased by %16, with 518 million dollars. Exports of plastic and rubber processing machines between the years 2013-2017 increased by an average of 6.1 percent, while in 2017, exports increased by 16 percent to $ 169 million. In the same period, imports increased by 0.5 percent to $ 583.1 million. When the export of plastic and rubber machinery realized in 2017 is examined on the basis of product, the injection machines are 7.2 percent, the extrusion machines 20.3 percent of the inflating machines 1.1 percent, the thermoforming machines 14.2 percent, the presses and other machines 43.3 percent and it is seen that the sections and parts have a share of 13.7 percent. Similarly, when the export figures are analyzed by countries, Russia, which is the largest market with 7% share, continues its leadership. Iran and Algeria followed Russia while the total export share of these three countries was 19 percent. Exports to the first 10 countries account for
41.8 percent of total exports. On the other hand, due to the restrictions imposed on imports of some plastic products in Algeria, which is the third in the list of the top 10 countries, the fact that the country is directed to produce in itself brings about new machinery investments in this market. In this sense, it is important for Algeria to be considered as one of the target markets for Turkish plastic and rubber processing machine manufacturers in the coming period. With %63 share in the imports of Turkey’s plastics and rubber processing machinery, China, Germany and Italy continues their leadership. Finally, the average unit import price of plastic and rubber processing machines and their parts and parts in 2017 was $ 11.2 / kilogram and this number is declined by 9 percent compared to 2016. In this period, the average unit import prices increased in the extruder blowing and thermoforming machines, while other products displayed a decline. Similarly, the average unit export price of plastic and 129 • SEPTEMBER 2018
MOMENT IN ENGLISH rubber processing machines and their sections and parts was $ 11.1 / kilogram in 2017 and that is a 3 percent increase compared to 2016. In this period, average export unit prices showed a decline in other machines except injection machines, inflating machines and press machines. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IMPORTED MACHINE ADDICTION In 2017, production of plastic and rubber processing machinery and sections and parts sector amounted to $ 518 million, imports of 583.1 million dollars, exports of 169 million dollars and domestic market sales of 932 million dollars (machinery and equipment investment of the plastics industry) in this period, the sector gave 414 million dollars of foreign trade deficit. 63 percent of domestic sales (machinery equipment investment of the sector) was met by imports, and the ratio of exports to imports was only 29 percent.
• 130
Similarly, in the last five years covering the years 2013-2017, 11.2 percent increase in the production of plastic and rubber processing machines, 2.6 percent in imports, 6.1 percent in exports, 6.2 percent in domestic sales and 1.3 percent in foreign trade deficit increases are observed. In 2018, production is expected to reach 576 million dollars, imports to 598 million dollars, exports to 180 million dollars and domestic sales to 995 million dollars, while foreign trade deficit of the sector is expected to rise to 419 million dollars. However, as of 2017, the plastic sector of Turkey could only cover %30 of the total processing machine fleet from domestic production. The remaining 70 percent slice is composed of imported machines. “WE ARE THE STRONGEST OPPONENT OF EUROPE” Plastic Manufacturers Association (PAGDER) Chairman Selçuk Gülsün emphasizes the fact that Turkish
plastic and rubber processing machines are the strongest alternative of Western European competitors in the global competition despite the import dependency of the plastic industry, and that we are more functional in terms of quality and far more efficient in terms of quality in Far East origin machines: “The plastic and rubber processing machinery sector stands out in the price / performance segment. Today, many markets search for better products that more economical than in Europe, and have more quality than China machinery and Turkey, in this context, is in a position to respond to this pursuit. Our efforts to maintain our sector continue with our exhibitions and our connections on different platforms.” On the other hand, the plastic industry of Turkey is seventh in the world with the process capacity of 9 million tons, and has the second biggest plastic manufacturing potential in Europe.
Even though Turkey covers for its plastic stock need by more than 85 percent from importation, it has the geographical advantage by being in between MiddleEastern countries that are manufacturers of petrol and plastic stock and Europe market, a plastic product user. For this purpose, it is aimed that the International Regional Production Center for Plastic planned to be established in the South Eastern Anatolia will combine plastic stock production potentials of Middle-Eastern countries with the competent product manufacturing talent and experience of Turkey’s plastic industry. In the center, while the stock producing countries gain a high-volume and reliable market, Turkey’s plastic industry will continue to grow rapidly by having a supply of cheap and reliable raw material, and will have stronger competition opportunities in the global market with manufacturing capacity and lowered prices.
