of 2018, Kutlu Karavelioğlu, the Chairman of the Executive Board of MAİB underlined that machinery has taken share for 2,4 trillion dollars within the global trade which has reached to 18 trillion dollars and said: “Machinery sector is providing a large workspace with its 22 sub-branches. Knowledge and specialty are needed in each field of engineering from R&D design,

manufacturing and testing, purchasing and sales, maintenance and repair, business and disposal. A mechanical engineer who was educated properly can be unemployed very rarely and temporarily within a developing economy. There is no international boundaries for the need of engineering. The ones who are working hard in this field can find job in abroad.”

she added that they will continue to tell the importance of women in the industry and to bring women engineering role models with young engineering candidates with the project “With Women Machinery with Might and Main”.

“ENGINEERING IS CUT OUT FOR WOMEN” Drawing attention that employment of young women in machinery sector by strengthening the cooperation between university and industry is possible, Karavelioğlu expressed: “We do not accept production difference of women and men in the intellectual field such as art and science. We consider gender-based social roles as a poor inheritance of humanity history. If only the men were poets, we could read only half of all the poems to be written. We need bright and young brain behind the machines. We see that engineering is cut out for women with their all creativity.”

being within the manufacturing activity. Because they have been conditioned for this. The schools where they took education cannot change this. Our purpose is to tell to women engineers that the industry is not a men’s world. Women engineer candidates should not be avoided from stepping towards the manufacturing and working in the factory. To manufacture is to create; to create is to leave a mark. The ones who have tasted the manufacturing experience cannot cut off their ties with the field. But firstly I kindly request out youth to listen us to get rid of this prejudice.”

“FOOD PROCESSOR IS ENTRUSTED TO ARDA, ROBOT MACHINES ARE ENTRUSTED TO WOMEN” Adding that, “Women can be as successful in the machinery sector as Arda Türkmen is in the kitchen” Armağan said: “For this we met with our youth with Arda Türkmen today to eliminate the gender roles. Food processor is entrusted to Arda, and robot machines are entrusted to women. And we are reiterating that the machinery sector is in need of intelligence and skills of young women engineers” in her speech where she expressed that stereotyped opinions should be eliminated in the minds, and

“ENGINEERING IS NOT A TASK, IT’S THE EXCITEMENT!” Stating that she was educated for mechanical engineering in Çukurova University and she was happy to meet with the students of the university from which she was graduated, Şule Karalı, the KSG Machinery Quality Manager expressed: “When you work through a great commitment for your work as an engineer, your priorities in the life turns out to be the subjects such as delivery, manufacture and quality. They are not task, they are new excitements. No profession is gender-based. I believe that each working woman and man who works through a vision which will bring innovation into her or his work will be successful in the life.” Women engineering students found opportunity to visit machinery factories in Adana Organized Industry Site and examine the sector and working conditions with a closer eye after the event.

INDUSTRY IS NOT A MEN’S WORLD Stating that they are working to reach more women engineers and encourage them by inspiring them, Zeynep Erkunt Armağan, the Board of Directors of MAİB Member emphasized that newly graduated engineers head for the sectors such as purchasing, sale and finance and said: “Especially women engineers have prejudice against the industry, or in other words 121 • DECEMBER 2018

VALVE AND ARMATURES: WHICH ARE THE HEART VALVES OF THE INDUSTRY ARE SHOWN AS THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT IN THE EMERGENCE OF THE CIVILIZED HUMANITY AND GOING INTO THE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION. SUMERIANS WHO TAMED THE OVERFLOW OF THE TIGRIS AND EUPRATES IN B.F. 2500S WITH THE PRIMITIVE VALVE SYSTEMS LEFT A DISTINCTIVE MARK ON THE HISTORY AS THE FIRST VALVE USERS. AND THE VALVES DEVELOPED WITH THE AIM OF DIRECTING WATER ARE OF VITAL IMPORTANCE AS THE HEART VALVES OF THE SYSTEMS WHICH THE MOST ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES APPLY IN VARIOUS AREAS FROM SPACE SHUTTLES TO NUCLEAR REACTORS. ACCORDING TO THE DATA OF UN STATISTICS DIVISION, THE SECTOR WHICH HAS REACHED TO TRADE VOLUME WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 133 BILLION DOLLARS IN JANUARY-SEPTEMBER PERIOD OF CURRENT YEAR HAS OBTAINED AN INCREASE AT THE RATE OF 10,5% COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS YEAR AND REACHED TO THE EXPORT VALUE FOR 428 MILLION DOLLARS WITH AN INCREASE BY 17,4% AND RANKED AS 26TH IN GLOBAL LEAGUE.

V

alves and armatures are the important members of machine family. Valves and armatures which we can defined as the tools which enable to stop or release liquid or gas flow which are being transmitted by pipes are the devices which can give way for the liquids, stop and mix them or change the direction and/or the amount of the liquid or its pressure or heat. Valves and armatures which enable modern life to go on in a regular way and which operate above-ground and underground with hundreds of types are like secret heroes in the trade of Turkey and the world. While export increase by 18,2% in the valve and armature sector which constitutes a trade volume for 1 billion 344 million dollars in January-October period of current year has been experienced, the import has been reduced to the rate of 12%. However, despite of the reduction in sectoral import, the coverage ratio of the valves and armatures export • 124

compared to the import is still at the level of 55,7% Today while valves are controlling the flow speed and volume, pressure and flow direction in terms of flow control, their sizes may vary according to their usage purposes. While the valve diameter can increase to the 10 meters, their types in terms of manufacture

methods and technology can vary from the simple brass valves which can be found in local markets easily to the complex refrigerating system valves which are used in nuclear reactors and manufactured within sensitive compounds. The controls of gases, chemicals which have high abrasiveness, superheated steam, mixes like mud

and radioactive materials are carried out with valves. Along with this, although they have an important role in the level of our life quality, most of us do not realize the existence of the valves and the important processes they have undertaken in our daily life activities. In fact, when we turn on and turn off a simple water valve used in

lavatories or push on the accelerator pedal to accelerate our vehicle, we make use of a valve. Furthermore, we can easily say that without modern valve systems, plumbing and heating systems which are considered as irreplaceable for our houses would not run, we could not use any energy resource other and three and coal and even the plastics which have spread into all the edges of the life would have never been have a single place in our lives. VALVES DIRECTING THE WATER GAVE BIRTH TO CIVILIZED HUMANITY Briefly, we can say that valves are one of the most main and irreplaceable components of the today’s modern and technological society. The first usage of the valves in general sense which are necessary for all production processes, energy generation and supply nearly dates back to the first periods of the civilization history. Birth of valve and armatures which are as important as the invention of the wheel but not famous as much as it is originates to the efforts of humanity to direct the water. During ancient periods, the most basic matter of humanity is to accumulate and then direct water. We know that the Sumerian creating the most efficient agricultural lands from the arid lands of Mesopotamia were engaged in irrigated farming on the large lands thanks to the channels by which they directed the overflow in the Euphrates and the Tigris since B.C. 2500s. Therefore, we can consider that the Sumerian used simple apparatus to change the direction of the water flow, and thus they developed the first valve systems. Common usage of water in public

sphere and water carriage to the cities over long distances by Egyptian and Greek in the following thousand years enabled the improvement of the valve and armature systems. Especially, usages of quarter turn plug valves used in Roman water systems and backflow preventer check valves are seen to date back to the very early dates in the history. We can follow through the historical records that bronze which is the common valve and armature material today was first used by Romans because it can be melted down through relatively lower degrees and has hygienically advantages. Modern history of the valves started with the industrial steam turbine by Thomas Newcomen in 1705. Prevention of the pressure created by the steam and its need be regulated had an important role in valves’ gaining importance; and thus, designers and manufactures

started to take the first steps of the modern valve systems with the development of steam turbine by James Watt and other inventors. Imagining a life without valve and armature systems are impossible today; however, we should remember that this development became possible as parallel with the improvement in the pumps and compressors. After all which gives the energy, namely the pressure to the fluid is plump and which controls this process is valve; so these both product has been side by side during the industrial history. GLOBAL VOLUME OF THE SECTOR HAS APPROACHED TO 133 BILLION DOLLARS IN THE JANUARYSEPTEMBER PERIOD According to the results of the UN Statistics Division, while the economic volume which valve and armature

sector created on a global scale has reached 133 billion dollars in the JanuarySeptember period of this year; and the sector which has obtained increase at the rate of 10,4% compared to the last year has risen by 10% in the global export. The global export of the sector which had been 58,7 billion dollar in the same period of 2016 was 61,7 billion dollar in the same period of 2017 and has reached to 67,9 billion dollar in this year. Similarly, there has been an improvement by 11% in the global import of the sector. The global export volume of the sector which had been 56,8 billion dollar in JanuarySeptember period of 2016 increased to 58,4 billion dollar in the same period of 2017 and has reached to 64,9 billion dollar in this year. When the global export of the valve and armature is reviewed on the countries basis, the leadership of 125 • DECEMBER 2018

China is drawing attention. According to the data of UN Statistics Division, while China which carried out export for 11,2 billion dollars in the January-September period has increased its export by 5,8% compared to the last year and Germany is following China with an increase by 14,7% and export for 10,9 billion dollars in the same period. At the third rank of the global export list of the sector, USA has taken its place with the export figure for 9,4 billion dollars. The export increase of USA in this period has stated as 8,8%. Similarly, while Turkey has increased its sectoral export by 17,4% compared to the same period of 2017, and Turkish valve and armature sector’s export in the January-September period of 2018 has been measured as 428 billion dollars, according to the data of UN Statistics Division. Turkey has still taken its place at the 26th rank • 126

in the world ranking with this number. USA IS THE LEADER IN THE GLOBAL EXPORT BY A LONG SHOT When the top 10 country data in the global export of valve and armature sector in countries sense are reviewed, it is seen that USA is the leader by a long shot. According to the data of UN Statistics Division, while USA which carried out export for approximately 12,5 billion dollars in the JanuarySeptember period has increased its export by 12,3% compared to the last year and China is following USA with an increase by 6,6% and export for approximately 6 billion dollars in the same period. At the third rank of the global import list of the sector, Germany has taken its place with increase by 14,8% and the import figure for 5,4 billion dollars. Other countries among the

top 10 countries for the global import of the sector are Canada, Mexico, France, England, Japan, South Korea and Italy; and just like in the top 10 country list for the global export, it draws attention that all the countries except for South Korea has increased their import by between the rates of 8 and 15% compared to the same period of 2017. Along with this, although Turkey which is at the 24th rank in the global import ranking has decreased its import by 10,7% in this period, Turkish buyers carried out import by double rate compared to the export because of their purchases for 786,1 million dollars. SECTORAL EXPORT OF TURKEY HAS INCREASED BY 18,2%. When detailed export and import numbers are reviewed specifically to Turkey, we can say that we are carrying out export mostly with Germany

and import mostly with Italy. When the sectoral export of Turkey is reviewed according to the countries, according to the TÜİK data Turkey carried out export for 481,1 million dollars with increase by 18,2% in the JanuarySeptember period of this year. And Germany takes its lace at the first rank in the list of top 10 counties which we carried out the most export for 76,7 million dollars with increase by 12,5%. While Iraq is following this country with export for 34,3 million dollars with increase by 34,5%; Egypt which is at the third rank in the list carried out export for 24,2 million dollars with increase by 7,9%. Along with this, according to the data announced by TÜİK, sectoral import of Turkey in the January-October period of this year is experiencing a tightness in the value of 12%. However, the fact that the total import amount at the first three ranks of the list of top 10 countries which Turkey mostly carried out the import is approximately equivalent to the total sectoral export amount of Turkey is an indication underlining the import addiction in Turkey. Within this scope, we can say that while import was carried out for 160 million dollars with decrease by 24% from Italy which is at the first rank in the list of top 10 countries which Turkey mostly carried out import, import was carried out for 154,3 million dollars with decrease by 22% from China which is at the second rank and another import for 151 million dollars with decrease by 4,5% from Germany which is at the third rank in the list. During this period, total amount of valve and armature import of Turkey was recorded as 863,1 million dollars according to the TÜİK data.
