EXPORT TARGET OF TEXTILE AND CLOTHING MACHINES MACHINES IS 1 BILLION DOLLARS TURKISH TEXTILE AND CLOTHING MACHINE MANUFACTURERS SET AN EXPORT TARGET FOR 1 BILLION DOLLARS IN THE EXPORT MARATHON WHICH THEY STARTED AT THE BEGINNINGS OF 1990s. TEXTILE AND CLOTHING MACHINES MANUFACTURERS WHO HAVE BEEN INCREASING THEIR GLOBAL COMPETITIVE CAPACITY IN QUALITY AND PRICE ALSO MAKE GREAT EFFORT TO BREAK THEIR IMPORT DEPENDENCE IN INNER MARKET. ACCORDING TO TUIK, SECTORAL MANUFACTURERS WHO CARRIED OUT EXPORT FOR 721 MILLION DOLLARS IN 2018 HAVE A BELIEF THAT THEY WILL BREAK THE IMPORT WHICH HAS REACHED TO 1,9 BILLION DOLLARS BY INCREASING THEIR ACTIVITIES IN THE INNER MARKET.
T
extile sector is considered to be one of the locomotive sectors of Turkish industry and our economy. The main factor which takes place among the main items • 124
of country export and which has an effect on the future and development of textile sector is the manufacture of textile and clothings machines. It is possible to define textile
and clothing machines as the ones by which the manufacture of clothing and house textiles which are the needs of humanity are carried out. Thread takes place in the foundation, at
the bottom of the textile. Therefore, it can be said that the first sub-sector of textile and clothing machines is the thread machines. While the weaving and sewing stages where the thread is
transformed into the texture are other significant sub-sector of textile and clothing machines, felting machines which are called as nonwoven and where non-woven fabrics are produced can be considered within this scope. Consequently, machines which carry out the activities of dying, chemical finishing and finishing are getting on the stage. Clothing machines are the ones which reach the trimmed textiles to clothing or house textile, in other words, into the final products. We call all of them as textile and clothing machines. Familiarity of Turks with textile dates back to the period when they used to live in Central Asia. Textile products manufactured from felt which were found in the excavations in the Turkish settlement which dates back to BC 2nd century at Altay Mountains. Familiarity of humanity with textile is considered to date back to the period before agriculture culture, to the hunter-collector periods. While protecting clothes and shoes were produced by using the threads from the animal features in this period, there were trade activities of textile products in Sumerian period following the domestication of the animals can be understood from the records on stone tablets. MECHANIZATION BEGAN IN OTTOMAN PERIOD Textile has maintained its existence without experiencing a great breakthrough as a labor-intensive sector throughout the years. Furthermore, the fact that the Industrial Revolution accelerated the production and mechanization firstly found an application area for itself in textile sector caused textile and clothing machines
to be born and promptly find an improvement area for themselves. We see that textile machines were improved in terms of efficiency thanks to steam firstly and then electric machines while mechanism in textile were experienced in Anatolia in 1800s in the period of Ottoman Empire. While the production of silk which was the need of both the palace and the house textile was carried out in Hereke, cotton mill established in Bakırköy and the Feshane, the wool fabric mill established in 1812 in Eyüp can be pointed out as the first textile production centers in the Ottoman Period. When it comes to the period of Turkish Republic, all those acquisitions were protected and brought together under the roof of Sümerbank. While important investments were made until the Second World War, the fact that the integrated textile factories which were established had the capacity to meet their own needs are considered to be important. Within this scope it can be said that there were a textile and
clothing machines sector which became self-sufficient in the period before 1950. In the same period, we can see the first private sector investments in textile and clothing machines; however, the imported machine dependence which started in the establishment of textile factories can be seen as the first steps of the import experienced today. We should remember that fast-developed machine industry of West countries has an important pressure effect on the developing countries like Turkey and thus has pressure on the development of local industry in that period. THE SECTOR UNDERWENT A CHANGE IN 1980 Turkish textile and clothing machines sector which was obstructed by the developed countries in a sense was able to realize the production of shuttle-less looms, thread looms in 1980s. We see that Mechanical and Chemical Industry started to realize the production of thread looms with an Italian firm and weaving looms with a German firm in Turkey while
a copy of weaving looms of a French firm was produced in the private sector. Doyens of the sector qualify that being left behind of the Turks who wrote the standards of the textile production with the document named as “Kannunname-i İhtisab-ı Bursa” published by the Sultan II. Bayezid Han in an early time as 1502 in technical and commercial terms in the production of textile and clothing machines is very sad and thought-awakening. WE CARRY OUT EXPORT INTO 200 COUNTRIES Textile sector has a very wide range. It involves numerous products varying from compression bandages used to wrap our wounds, towels used to dry our faces, the carpet we lay on the floor to cord fabric in automobile tires and special cables used in electronics. We can try to understand the extent of the manufacture machines of this sector of which product range is this much comprehensive and its availability for the new developments by taking into consideration the sub-headings such as raw 125 • FEBRUARY 2019

material, semi-finished products and finished product processes. As Turkey, even if we don’t state that we are highly assertive in the whole field which is this much comprehensive, it possible to say that Turkey has shown a fast development when it comes to textile and clothing machines in the world. Within this framework there is developed and big textile and clothing machine park in Turkey which can produce each type of thread, fabric, clothing goods, house textile products and readymade textile garments in various sub-branches of textile industry. While local manufacturers have especially created competition in international markets in the machine categories such as atmospheric jet or jet dyeing machines, manufacturers of textile and clothing machines in Turkey have been focused on Istanbul and Izmir in generally KOBİ scale. The sector which applies innovative technologies and attaches great importance in design-developing carried out production for inner market until 1990s, we can say that we are at the position where we carry out export into 200 different countries today with the export attack • 126
started since that period. According to the data of Textile Machinery and Accessories Association (TEMSAD), Turkish textile and clothing machinery sector which carried out export for 721 million dollars in 2018 caught a growth for 24% compared to 2017. The import of textile and clothing machinery sector in 2018 which provides the most export flow within the sub-groups of all machinery sector in each year and maintains its rank as the second or third one was realized as 1.9 billion dollars. While 80% of the textile and clothing machinery export for 721 million dollars consist of dyeing-finishing machines; export for dyeing-finishing machine has importance because it is 2.5 times bigger than the import. The most significant items in textile and clothing machines brought into Turkey via import are weaving, thread and knitting machines. Total export of these three machine types are for around 1 billion dollars annually. WE SELL TO ENGLAND, BUY FROM GERMANY When detailed export and import numbers are reviewed specifically to Turkey,
according to TÜİK’s 2018 data, we can say that we are carrying out export mostly with England and import mostly with Germany. When the sectoral export of Turkey is reviewed according to the countries according to the TÜİK data, Turkey carried out export for 721 million dollars with increase by 19.2% in 2018 and England has taken its lace at the first rank in the list of top 10 counties which we carried out the most export for 90 million dollars with increase by 16.7%. While Uzbekistan is following this country with export for 53 million dollars with increase by 53.8%; Germany which is in the third rank at the list carried out export for 52 million dollars with increase by 9.5%. Other countries which have taken place within the top 10 counties in Turkey’s sectoral export are Italy, France, Bangladesh, India, Egypt, South Korea and Czech. And also according to the data which was announced by TÜİK, sectoral import of Turkey in 2018 increased by 31%. In this period only the import for 506 million dollars from Germany draws attention because it exceeds the two out of three of sectoral export on its own. Within
this scope, according to TÜİK data, we can say that while import was carried out for 506 million dollars with increase by 15% from Germany which is at the first rank in the list of top 10 countries which Turkey mostly carried out import, import was carried out for 293 million dollars with increase by 65% from China which is at the second rank and another import for 264 million dollars with increase by 11.5% from Italy which is at the third rank in the list. The total textile and clothing machinery import which Turkey carried out in this period exceeded 1.9 billion dollars. In other words, we carried out import approximately for three units in return of an export for 1 unit like we did in other various sectors. WE HAVE OUTPUT GAP IN THREAD AND WEAVING MACHINERIES On the other hand, the sector in Turkey is in a highly advanced position in terms of dyeing-finishing machineries. The fact that export’s coverage ratio of import is above 200% points out that our textile dyeing and finishing machines have become a world brand now. Furthermore, while Turkish textile and clothing machinery manufacturers can establish turn-key factories, they compete with world brands in terms of quality and price; and they secure their positions in the world brand in this field year by year. Likewise, export’s coverage ratio of import in thread and weaving machines which has the biggest import rate is around 8%. This figure points out that there is a great gap in this field; however; it can be said that these machines will make great contributions to the sector by supporting the production in Turkey.
