Technology addıng value to the product: Packagıng Machınes Packages, whıch protect materıals or products, enable them to be stored ın a clean and relıable way and delıvered to consumers. Systems that apply packages to products are called packagıng machınes. The expectatıon for ınnovatıon ın packagıng desıgns, whıch shape the purchasıng perceptıon of the consumers, has a dırect ımpact on the development of the packagıng machınery sector.

P

ackages, which have a wide range of functions such as storing and protection of products from various sectors, and promotion and sales of brands, have a role in every field of our life through thousands of forms from metal to wood, carton to glass, simple folding boxes to special-design high-quality packages used for luxurious products. Today, packaging designs have a very important place especially in food, pharmaceutical products and personal care products. Packaging designs, which change the purchasing perception of the consumers, have turned into a field in which companies make large investments. Along with the fast development of the packaging industry and the change in consumption habits, this progress, as a matter of course, has its impact on the packaging machinery sector as well. It offers big opportunities to manufacturers of packaging machines both in the domestic market and in exports. As a result of the combination of factors such as rapid urbanization movements, which started in 2000s, increase in the number of supermarkets, development of tourism, spreading of the culture of packaged food worldwide, general economic revival and growth rates, the package sector develops rapidly around the world. Systems that fill or place the product to any readymade package or a container manufactured/formed by packaging materials, wrap it with a protective packaging material, close its cap, label it, place it into parcels, wrap it with a protective film or perform a similar pri-

mary or secondary packaging operation for consumers or intermediate users are classified as packaging machines. Structure of the packagıng machınery sector ın turkey The packaging machinery manufacturers in Turkey are trying to adapt to this rapid change by increasing their target in parallel with the development of the packaging industry worldwide. Problems faced by the packaging machinery manufacturers are generally similar to those faced by all other machinery manufacturers. Since the sectors they serve change rapidly, offering innovations in accordance with the expectations of customers gets more important for packaging machinery manufacturers. This constant innovation effort results

in high research & development costs. Many companies and entrepreneurs are active in the Turkish packaging machinery sector, and a great majority of them is small-scale businesses. Turkish packaging machinery manufacturers continue their activity mainly in Istanbul, and also in İzmir, Konya, Ankara and Gaziantep. Manufacturers are concentrated in regions that use high amounts of packaging materials, near industrial organizations and suppliers. According to the information obtained from representatives of non-governmental organizations, the manufacturers in Turkey are behind the brands competed with in international markets in terms of the added value created per company. According to experts, the manufacturing capacity of the manufacturers cannot ex-

plastics, metal, paper and carton and the processes like labeling, parceling and palletizing that will be needed after filling, it can be said that specialization in the packaging machinery sector as a whole is not that easy. Packaging machines mostly manufactured in Turkey are classified as bubble package, vacuum package, carton package, box package, closing and stamping, cleaning, cooling and drying, positioning, packing, filling, shaping, sorting out and weighing, product determination, plastic injection and bottle closing machines. In the light of existing data, it may be said that package is fast-developing sector in Turkey. The package industry, which grew by 6 percent in average in the last five years, entered a period of rapid recovery with a growth of 17.5 percent in 2010 following the 5-percent shrinkage in 2009. Rapid urbanization, population increase, increase in life standards, increase in the women’s participation in business life, changes in consumption habits, increase in retail shopping through spreading of shopping malls, increase in the demand for consumption products, and the increase in exports are the main factors behind the fast development

of the sector. There are about 3,000 companies that manufacture packaging materials. Most of these companies are medium and small-scale companies. 53 package manufacturers are among the leading 1000 companies in Turkey in terms of business volume. Companies in the package sector are mainly active in Istanbul, Ä°zmir, Bursa, Ankara, Konya, Kocaeli, Gaziantep, Adana, Kayseri and Manisa. As for sub-groups of package consumption, 39 percent is paper, carton and corrugated cardboard packages, 33 percent plastic packages, 13 percent glass packages, 8 percent wood packages and 7 percent metal packages. Over 1.8 million tons of plastic packages are manufactured in Turkey. The Turkish PE and PP woven bags and sacks sector has a major manufacturing and export capacity. The products paper, carton and corrugated cardboard have recently become one of the most important sectors of the package industry. The total amount of manufacture in the field of paper, carton and corrugated cardboard is over 2.1 million tons. The manufacturing capacity for metal packages has reached 600,000 tons and their share has reached 7 percent. 105

ceed a certain level since they generally do not work in modern and large manufacturing areas. This fact has a negative impact on efficiency and purchase costs. Since the SMEs cannot unite their power and manufacturing skills, they cannot reach a status that lets them have a say in international markets. Small-scale businesses, which cannot promote their products at foreign fairs due to high costs, cannot turn towards export because of the competitive conditions in the domestic market. Manufacturing companies that struggle against unfair competition and the demand shrinkage in the domestic market, and turn towards foreign markets before its infrastructure is ready experience greater problems during and after the export. The fact that the use of package cannot be made compulsory by law in Turkey, a country where uninspected and unpackaged food posing such a big threat on public health is widespread, affects the development of the sector negatively. According to experts, Turkish package manufacturers should prefer the most economical manufacturing methods to get rid of competition and increase their exports. To increase the manufacturing volume and to manufacture added valued products in the most economical way, on the other hand, automation is needed in manufacturing. Especially the branded companies that manufacture fast moving consumer goods must purchase technological equipment suitable for their operations, improve their existing lines and continue to manufacture with the most suitable packaging equipment at their disposal. In this respect, package and packaging machines have a great importance. The packaging machinery sector is an important business line of the machinery manufacturing industry. On the other hand, the packaging machinery sector is different from the other machinery sectors in terms of structure. In this sector, manufacturing is performed upon orders, specifically for production. Considering both product type and package type, customers may demand machines with a wide range of characteristics. While machines are manufactured in a certain standard form, they diversify through modifications specific to the packages which will be filled. Considering together the packaging material types such as glass,

SEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) was founded by Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore on August 8, 1967. With the membership of Brunei in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997 and Cambodia in 1999, the number of ASEAN member countries increased to 10. Total population of the ASEAN Region, which spreads on an area of 4.5 million square-kilometers, is about 590 million. Among the prioritized aims of the ASEAN organization are accelerating the economic growth of the countries in the region and ensuring social and cultural development, peace and stability in the region. Upon the decision made by the ASEAN leaders in 2003 that the ASEAN should cover three sections, ASEAN Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Society and Culture Community were formed. The highest decision-making body of the ASEAN is the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit held every year. Ministers of foreign affairs of the ASEAN countries gather every year as well. In addition, meetings are organized, which bring together the relevant ministers of the ASEAN countries in the fields of agriculture and forestry, trade, energy, environment, finance, health, investment, workforce, law, rural development, anti-poverty, telecommunications, international crimes, transportation, tourism, etc. The ASEAN organization has representation offices in Beijing, Berlin, Brussels, Canberra, Islamabad, London, Moscow, New Delhi, New York,

In addition, it is thought that public expenditure may be increased to remedy the possible recession in the real estate and export sectors through public tenders. It is expected that China’s population, 1.32 billion according to 2008 official figures, will keep increasing until the mid-21st century and find its balance at about 1.6 billion. The ratio of the elderly to the young has been steadily increasing in the total population, which keeps growing, even at a lower rate, as a result of the policies implemented. The Han Chinese account for 91.6 percent of the country’s population, and 16.7 percent is made up by minorities including the Uyghurs. In China, families are encouraged to have one child only, which is a

prominent practice. Being among the biggest problems of China, high population is also a major economic power source. It is thought that the mid-class population will increase at a higher rate than expected as a result of the acceleration of the urbanization process in China, and become a major power in the development of the society. This situation is expected to have a deep impact on the structure of political, economic and cultural developments besides the social structure in cities. It is estimated that about 70 million people will join the labor force in the next 10 years. The pressure to be created by this mass is thought to necessitate high growth rates in the forthcoming period as well.

ecoming popular with foreign capital from the beginning of 1990s, China implemented the internationally acclaimed principle of “national treatment” which means equal treatment of domestic and foreign investments, with the thought that the country was already satisfied with the existing foreign investments and privileged treatment of such investments was therefore no more necessary. Acting within the framework of the foreign trade law prepared in 1995, the People’s Republic of China has since then been organizing its foreign trade through the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC) in accordance with the trade planning mechanism principles, except the foreign-capital institutions. Foreign trade activities in the country are performed through foreign trade companies (FTC) that are organized on national and regional levels. The “obligatory planning” for imports has been abolished, but licensing practice for some products still exists. However, “plan” maintains its importance in protecting domestic manufacture and controlling the foreign currency reserve. The foreign currency rate system reform initiated by China in 2005 keeps its progress in the intended way. Renminbi (Yuan), which has increased in actual value by 45 percent in the last five years, is expected to gain value by 5 percent annually in the forthcoming years. Main goals of China in its economy policy include extending the loans, keeping the value of Renminbi high, and continuing the 12th Five-Year
