OUR MANUFACTURERS AT THE HEIGHTS OF EU Turkish machinery manufacturers became finally member to ORGALIME, the top non governmental organization of the engineering sector in the EU. Admission to this organization, having a background of 60 years, together with 43 member federations or confederations from 23 countries, besides being an indication of the potential of Turkish sector in competitiveness and production capability, is the verification of the representation power of MAKFED, the first and only civilian representative in its field.
O
RGALIME (European Engineering Industries Association) was established in 1954 to represent the machinery, electric-electronic and metal industries in Europe. Its members are 43 roof organizations from 23 European countries. The engineering industry is the EU’s most strategic and strongest field of presence and has a turnover of 1.8 billion euros. ORGALIME is the largest organization its field representing 130,000 companies and 10 million employees. As the sector’s voice and top lobby organization, ORGALIME is an organization that keeps up with and directs the developments in its field in Europe and worldwide and makes efforts for the harmonization and globalization of rules and standards. The association continues its efforts focusing on the development of rules and mechanisms that can be accepted and realized by all its members and will be beneficial to all its stakeholders in accordance with the aim of

able future projections and their correct use of labor force and financial resources. The organization is very active in the creation of information and transfer thereof to the base through its periodical and nonperiodical publications, activities in member countries, consultancy support it provides for its members’ activities and its widespread communication network. In addition, it keeps the experts of member organizations, that is, member countries, in constant contact with the commissions of the organizations that supervise and inspect the market, and thus help the decision makers and public authorities determine their policies. In the fields of economy, law, domestic and international trade, environment, research & development and many other fields, it forms working groups and committees where experts of member countries serve together.
Kutlu Karavelioğlu President of MAKFED
The 2015 General Assembly of ORGALIME was held in Copenhagen on 28 and 29 May. The application of MAKFED (Turkish Machinery Federation) for membership to ORGALIME was discussed and unanimously approved at the General Assembly. With the 16 associations it represents, MAKFED became an ORGALIME member as being Turkey’s first and only federation in the field of machinery. In his General Assembly speech, MAKFED President Kutlu Karavelioğlu gave information about the level the Turkish machinery sector has reached, the importance he attaches to civil organization and international representation, the structuring, members, foundation aims and activity fields of the federation, and shared the expectations of Turkish manufacturers from membership to ORGALIME. As the President

KUTLU KARAVELİOĞLU ELECTED EUROPUMP PRESIDENT At the 55th General Assembly of EUROPUMP hosted by VDMA in Dresden, Kutlu Karavelioğlu was elected president. Karavelioğlu, who has been a member of the executive council since 2001 and vice president since 2013, will serve as the past president for 2 more years, after completing his presidency term.
T
he level our machinery manufacturers have reached, helps the presidents of the associations of our subsectors, which stand out with their production potential, competitiveness, quality and skills in developing technology, assume major duties in international top organizations. Kutlu Karavelioğlu, vice president of our MAİB and MTG, in his capacity as the president of the Turkish Pump and Valve Manufacturers Association (POMSAD), was elected president of the European Pump Manufacturers Association (EUROPUMP) at the beginning of May. Annual meetings and the general assembly of Europump, traditionally being organized by a different member country each year, was in Dresden in 2015. In the agenda of the general assembly, held on the last day of the meetings organized by the German member VDMA, was the nomination of the new council members and the elections for the president and vice presidents who will serve for a term of two years. Kutlu Karavelioğlu was elected president to replace Carlo Banfi, president of the Italian Pump Manufacturers Association (ASSOPOMPE), who completed his term and started

serving as the past president. Ken Hall, the representative of the British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA), and Martijn van den Born, the representative of the Holland Pump Group, were elected vice president. The executive council of the association, of which POMSAD became a member in 2001, consists of one representative from each member country. Established in 1960, EUROPUMP brings together the associations of 17 countries, 14 of which are EU members. Through its member associations, EUROPUMP represents more than 450 pump manufacturers, a production volume over 10 billion euros and a sector that employs around 100,000 people. Like in many EU top organizations, within the annual meetings, commission meetings are organized prior to general assembly session, in fields of technical, standards, marketing and small enterprises and meetings of working groups such as eco design, energy efficiency, carbon footprint and simultaneous social events for the part-
ners. At the same time, sessions are organized with the managers and members of the American Hydraulic Institute (HI), with which the association has been in close cooperation for over 25 years, and efforts are made for the harmonization of technical issues and standards in both continents and joint projects are reviewed. At the General Assembly that convened on 9 May, the past president Carlo Banfi gave a vote of thanks in which he talked about the efforts made during his term and the results obtained, and left the duty stating his wishes of success. Kutlu Karavelioğlu shared his feelings and stated that the election of a Turkish president was a significant indicator of the European high culture and democracy, and he was proud to see that the respect and trust in Turkish manufacturers, who he is honored to represent, was revealed with his election for presidency. The next annual mee t i ng o f EUROPUMP will be organized in Gent, Belgium between 26 and 28 May 2016, and the details will be available on the website www. europump2016.com which will be active in September. The 2017 meetings are planned to be held in Bodrum and hosted by POMSAD.

DISCOVERY OF THE POTENTIAL: DRILLING MACHINES Drilling practices are considered to be one of the basic elements in adding underground resources to the economy of the country. Experts emphasize the importance of locating the resources, determining their amount correctly and using them effectively in terms of the economy of the country. Drilling technologies develop rapidly and new machines and equipment are put into the service of the sector.
R
ational use of existing resources has become an obligation today. Discovery of underground resources both effectively and economically provides positive added value to the country’s economy in many contexts. The developments in science and technology directly affect the drilling sector, like many fields, with new practices and methods. Locating the places where underground resources exist, determining the amount of these resources correctly within limits of acceptability, using them effectively and adding them to the country’s economy are prerequisites for describing the economy as a strong one. The places where underground resources exist are located by collecting and examining a great deal of information. In terms of locating the resources and introducing them to the economy, it is clear that drilling efforts play a very essential role. Drilling is the process of excavation performed vertically, horizontally or in any direction in an angular way to seek and process underground resources, and determine and improve the basic conditions of engineering constructions. Driller’s
126
work is the process of drilling and means being active in drilling. Although there are many other techniques for in-depth exploration of the earth, the method that provides the most important, correct and reliable information is drilling. Drilling practices are used for the exploration, development, produc-
tion, using and planning of metallic mines, industrial raw material, coal resources, exploration of oil, natural gas, geothermal resources and underground water, using dam sites, in tunnels and bridges, for the improvement of weak soil and for various purposes in many other fields. Drilling is very es-
sential for the exploration and operation of underground resources and the design of engineering constructions. WORLDWIDE DRILLING MACHINES EXPORT AMOUNTS TO 34.4 BILLION DOLLARS According to the United Nations (UN) Statistics Division data, the worldwide drilling machines export, which stood at 34.6 billion dollars in 2012, decreased 0.7 percent to 34.4 billion dollars in 2012. In 2014, Turkey exported 6.2 million dollars’ worth of drilling machines to Israel, to which it did not export any products in this category in 2013. Turkey had the highest increase in its drilling export to
Afghanistan with 1,253.2 percent. In 2014, Turkey made the highest amount of export in the item “accessories and spare parts of other drilling machines.” 33.2 million dollars’ worth of export was made in this product group in 2013, and it increased 96.5 percent to 65.3 million dollars in 2014.
