Sometimes we focus so much on the future that we neglect the many wonderful elements of the past. Steve Harrington however, enjoys digging through his memory bank for inspiration. His work loosely revolves around the idea of connectivity and community. Steve shares with us his thoughts: “I want to be able to see the world as it was before I was taught that reason, logic and science had to be superimposed on the universe. It seems like somewhere along the way most of the westernized world has lost the sense that fire, mountains, water, rocks and the whole of nature is a dynamic living organism.”

Mike Perry enjoys working and it really shows. His extensive body of work oozes with positivity and playful imagery and, when he’s not working on a job, he’s busy giving himself assignments. “I love what I do and believe in it. Working makes me happy, so I just go for it. I also drink a lot of coffee,” states Mike. He’s worked with Urban Outfitters, MTV and DWELL magazine to name a few.

Aside from working for clients such as the TATE gallery, Guinness and the City of Manchester, Zoe Miller and David Goodman of consultancy Silence decided to create ‘50s and ‘60s inspired wooden toys under the name “millergoodman”. “Kids are being taught less and less art in school. Imagination is not valued as much as knowledge. If we could help a fraction of children be more creative maybe those kids, when they grow up, can find creative solutions to the problems of the world,” says David Goodman. Their award-winning ShapeMaker is about using simple shapes to make lots of fun pictures, while PlayShapes are geometric wooden shapes that can be endlessly arranged or stacked to produce hundreds of 3D creations. Both products allow for open-ended play in which children and adults can freely participate in the creative process.

Love, peace and smiles surround Hideyuki Katsumata’s world. Hide, as he likes to be known, describes himself as an average person with a not-so-average appetite for drawing. When asked what he does in his free time, he replies: “Always drawing. This is my life. I am relaxing for drawing time.” He works with a number of musical talents including Little Dragon, who we also feature in this issue of Ari. Although he has never been to Thailand, Hide loves listening to GAP from the Thai reggae band T-BONE.

The community, founded by Didi Devamala, aims to help Burmese immigrants and their children who have been victimized by alcohol, drug and spousal abuse. Our second issue addresses the importance of playfulness and open-mindedness, which serve as a basis for creativity. It’s a shame that today’s society doesn’t value creativity as an asset. As a matter of fact, as we grow older, we’re often encouraged to stop playing - resulting in less practice of our creative mind. Playfulness is not the same as being immature and, if cultivated properly, can open us up to different possibilities. We talk to some outstanding individuals in this issue who have created an exceptional body of work based upon this principal. At first glance Sachiko Kodama’s kinetic sculpture looks like something out of a sci-fi novel. She uses a dark matter called ferrofluid, a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field, orchestrating it to move in a particular manner. Ferrofluid is not, however, as alien as you may think. It is actually used to form liquid seals around the spinning drive shafts found in hard disks, while in loudspeakers it is employed to remove heat from the voice coil. With a degree in physics and a masters and doctoral program in art and design, Sachiko infuses her love of both art and sciences to create projects such as ‘Protrude, Flow’ and ‘Morpho Tower’, portraying the idea of life, growth and sometimes even violence.

MUSIC - Interview หลายคนอาจจะรู้จัก Gene Mahasmut ในฐานะของพระเอกหนัง เรื่องหมานคร ลูกชายของดีไซน์เนอร์ชื่อดังอย่าง พิจิตรา นักร้องนำวง Saliva Bastards หรือ นายแบบในนิตยสารต่างๆ แต่มาถึงวันนี้ Gene Mahasmut ดูมีอะไรที่แตกต่างออกไป อาจจะเป็นเพราะใน เวลาที่ผ่านมา เขาได้ไปบวชและได้ใช้เวลาให้กับตัวเองมากขึ้น นอกจากนี้เค้ายังได้เดินทางไปถึงอินเดียเพื่อหาประสบการณ์กับประเทศ ที่ได้ให้กำเนิดพุทธศาสนา “ผมหลงรักและคิดถึงประเทศอินเดียตอนกลับ มามาก การเดินทางไปที่ต่างๆทำให้ผมได้รู้ว่า ไม่มีอะไรที่เป็นทางที่ถูก หรือผิดอย่างแน่ชัด เพราะแต่ละประเทศก็มีวีธีการของเค้าเอง” จีน กล่าว เมื่อถามถึงงานเพลง เขาได้บอกว่าการร้องนำให้กับ Saliva Bastards เป็นการรวมตัวของนักดนตรีหลายคน แตตอนนี้ Little Fox คือตัวเขา คนเดียว งานเพลงจึงมาจากความเป็นตัวของเขาเองล้วนๆ Gene ชื่นชม นักร้องอย่าง Cat Power, Ravi Shankar และยังได้รับแรงบันดาลใจ จากนักร้องโฟร์ค – นักปราชญ์ ชื่อดัง อย่าง Bob Dylan นอกจากนี้เขายังได้เรียนรู้ที่จะอยู่ไปพร้อมกับธรรมชาติ เพราะเขาเชื่อว่า เราก็คือส่วนนึงของธรรมชาติ มันคงเป็นสิ่งโง่เขลามากถ้าเราจะทวนกระแสมัน เราจึงควรไปในทิศทางเดียวกันกับธรรมชาติและใช้มันอย่างชาญฉลาด โลกเราไม่ได้เป็นหนี้อะไรกับเราเลย แต่เราต่างหากที่เป็นหนี้กับโลกใบนี้
GENE MAHASMUT ジーン・マハサムット There was a point in time when Gene Mahasmut, son of famous fashion designer and model Pichitra Boonyarataphan, seemed to have it all: exotic good looks, an acting career, a band called the Saliva Bastards and modeling gigs everywhere. But with all the media exposure he was getting back then, it seemed that no one really understood him maybe not even himself. Today however, as our interview with him discovered, Gene Mahasmut is much more comfortable in his own skin. He shares with us his thoughts, his love of india and his new solo act under the name Little Fox. You’ve done quite a few things including acting, music and even modeling, but what are you doing now ? I’ve always been happy to do whatever job people have for me to do. When there is no outside job I spend my time working on my songs and new album. My other plan is to live a simple life. I’m learning to be a gardener, a yogi and to learn about the way of native American Indians.
How was your recent trip to India, do you think it changed your perspective on things?
perspective because you meet another culture and you learn that there are no real right or wrong ways; people just do things differently. When your whole world is packed into a bag you realize the less things you possess the lighter you feel and, like Dylan said, “when you got nothing, you got nothing to lose’”. Jesus, Buddha, yogi and Native Indians have spoken in the same way.
You were in a band called Saliva Bastards and now you’re playing as Little Fox, can you describe the differences? Saliva Bastards has three main members and many more sub-members, friends that help and jam, throwing in ideas but aren’t permanent members. We all have different musical influences; all of us combine and make music together. Little Fox is me alone, limited by what I am capable of performing and creating alone. Because I’m alone I’m able to clearly express my emotions freely. I feel like Saliva Bastards creates music from many brains, but Little Fox is straight from my heart.
How important is nature to you? what do you think people can learn from nature? Nature is where we came from and go back to in the end. She is the mother to all of us and we all owe her so much. Without her we can’t survive. As I grow older I become more and more attached to nature. As I put my feet on the ground I feel her, as I sit on the ground I think more deeply. I don’t understand how some people can feel so little that they need to take so much from nature, yet they’re still looking for more. What people can learn from nature is that we are nature, we are part of the whole and it’s silly to try to go against it. We have to go with the flow (with nature) and use it wisely. Little Dragon

Before forming the band Little Dragon with her high school friends in Gothenburg, Sweden, Yukimi Nagano was known for lending her vocals to the likes of electro jazz bands such as KOOP and Sleep Walker. Since then, Yukimi has evolved her sound into something that is both distinct and soulful. Little Dragon’s first, self-titled album, was a huge success, gaining attention across Europe and America. They even caught the attention of Damon Albarn’s band Gorillaz, who invited Little Dragon to work with them on their new album ‘Plastic Beach’. “They heard our debut album and got in touch with our manager. We were in London for a couple of days between touring and went to their studio to see what we could come up with. We had a good time there and ended up recording two tracks,” Yukimi explains. While their first album was dark and emotional, their second album “Machine Dreams” takes on a more whimsical approach. The album’s cover was beautifully illustrated by Japanese artist Hideyuki Katsumata, also featured in this issue of Ari Magazine. With all the attention around them these days, there seems to be no stopping the fierce and soulful Little Dragon.

Whether on old buildings or parking lots, graffiti has become part and parcel of city life, but does it do anything positive for the environment? In the case of Symbolix, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. One of the few street artists who can proudly state their environmental credentials, Symbolix creates their work through the process of cleaning. Paul Curtis, better known as Moose from Symbolix, stumbled upon the phenomena by accident. “I wondered into a restaurant one day and, on seeing a small gravy splash on the wall, without hesitation, my cleaning cloth was out”. now working on much larger projects in different places all around the world. One of the more prominent pieces they’ve worked on was the “thank u 4 not breeding” mural inside the Broadway Tunnel in San Francisco.

Anna crafts natural media to give it a voice. On projects such as ‘Sporeborne’ and ‘Nourish’ she works with poet Eleanor Stevens to create messages rendered from moss. Living Roof

Ever since the opening of the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, people have been flocking to this all-in-one destination to experience its rainforests, fresh and seawater aquariums, as well as a state-of-theart planetarium. On top of it all lies the building’s ‘Living Roof’. Aside from providing an aesthetic touch to the main structure, the roof also helps regulate the temperature inside the building. Oscar Diaz is an industrial designer who prefers to formulate his concepts through writing. “For me it is important to let the ideas develop without fixing them into a shape too quickly. Once the idea is defined, I look for the materials and shapes that I think reinforce the idea and make it stronger,” he explains. His interest in crafts and technology has led him to create some really exceptional products. The ‘Ink Calendar’, for example, uses a capillary action to spread ink regularly across a piece of paper to indicate time. The ink is slowly absorbed, allowing the numbers on the calendar to be ‘printed’ daily. The ink colors are based on a spectrum, which relate to a ‘color temperature scale’. Each month has a color related to our perception of the weather in that month. Another interesting project is the RGB Vase, which combines traditional glass blowing techniques with the use of computer calculations. The vase works as a three dimensional pixel where the RGB colors overlap to create a specific color when all the vases are nestled within each other.

When they’re not busy doing research on poultry or creating supercharged engines, you’ll find Stockholm-based Teenage Engineering promoting their current invention, the OP-1. Don’t let its compact size and friendly appeal fool you. This all-in-one synthesizer, controller and recorder is packed with hi-tech ingenuity. “We want to do inspiring products. To be creative it’s very important to have fun, and that probably shines through. There’s a lot of hard work and serious tech underneath but that doesn’t mean it has to be presented in a dry way. We all have university degrees but we won’t let that stop the playfulness,” says David from Teenage Engineering. Some of the interesting features of the OP-1 are its eight synthesizer engines, a built-in virtual tape recorder and an FM Radio.

In 2000, Naomi Klein released No Logo, a book that tried to free us from the invasion of brands, billboards and advertising in our daily life. Ten years later, H5, a team of French animators decided to push it further by creating a world where nothing but logos exist. Around 2,500 logotypes were used for this short animation set in the decadence of Los Angeles. Every object, tree and character is extracted from famous logos. The story itself, meanwhile, combines a series of clichés from Hollywood movies, including high-speed chases, acts of terror and dialogues a la Quentin Tarantino… ending in a way that would please Naomi Klein and every logo creator.

“CAT TYPE” Earth’s Air Cleaner (A.I.R. 1) This machine not only helps us absorbs CO2 and air pollution, but also bad feelings (like when we have fights). By using the trees that are inside its belly, this machine produces oxygen, clean air and happy feelings and spreads them to us through its tail. Having a long-legged cat shape makes it easy to go everywhere around the world. It would be nice if the entire world turn HAPPY!

After working as a textile designer for the late Alexander McQueen, Oma Kaom turned her attention to older, more traditional fabrics. Her clothing brand ‘Kaom’ gives a modern twist to traditional Asian textiles, including those from Korea, Thailand, India and Cambodia. While she understands the changes that industrialization and standardization have brought about, she says they have limited choices. “Silk that used to be spun locally gives you different densities and textures,” she comments.

Number eleven seems to be the magic number for Adidas’ latest ‘Jabulani’ soccer ball for the 2010 FIFA World Cup ™. The name ‘Jabulani’ means ‘to celebrate’ in Zulu, which is one of the eleven official languages of the Republic of Africa. Eleven different colors have been used to represent the 11 players in each team, while this year also marks Adidas’ eleventh world cup ball. The ball itself is constructed of eight spherical panels that envelope an inner carcass. Aero grooves along the ball give it optimal aerodynamic flow with better control.
