JEZ BURROWS ジェズ・バロウズ Jez Burrows calls himself a designer, illustrator and a forest enthusiast. “ There’s often a lot of references to nature and the outdoors in my work, perhaps as I get to spend so little time in both when I’m working. Nothing beats a good walk through the forest or along a river. “ he says. Jez has worked on projects for The New York Times, Monocle and Dwell Magazine. For each project, Jez makes sure he does a lot of research before he starts “ I like to make sure there’s a strong foundation under my work. I make lots of notes and sketches and then try to dig in.” he explains.

‘It’s been a long, a long time coming’ but we’ve finally got to print this issue: our largest issue to date. This time round we’ve even managed to sneak in a supplementary issue called ‘A4’ for you. A4 is our sister publication which begins right where Ari finishes off. It’s basically an extension of Ari Magazine, with more interesting articles that we would like to share and talk about. Gracing the cover of this issue is the beautiful and talented Maria Ehren, who was kind enough to pose for us and give us the scoop on her upcoming debut album. Ari 03 also covers a variety of intriguing topics ranging from bleeding CD covers, innovative ways of presenting data to green products inspired by technologies developed from NASA.

All in all, we hope you enjoy our latest installment to the Ari Magazine series along with our first A4 supplementary issue. We hope to continually bring you more interesting topics form around the globe.
Heberokororo’s unusual name derives from a 1984 Czech movie. “In that movie there is a wizard who is looking for a magic formula to help them to escape into a fantasy world. The formula is Hebero Kororo,” explains Jaroslav Jurica, who heads the multidisciplinary team of Heberokororo. Jaroslav who graduated from the Swedish Lund University School of industrial design worked for dutch design house Demakersvav and is currently studying sculpture back in his native home of the Czech Republic. Heberokororo works closely with other specialists in the fields of typography, graphic design, architecture, video and technology to provide “extra value to a product”. When asked about the process of their working methods, Jaroslav explains that “some people say there is a pen and paper in the beginning. I say not. I am searching for a concept and reason for why this object needs to be in this world. It’s an alternative way of thinking in an overproduced world.” In this issue we take a look at Uceroz, Heberokororo’s CD design for Ivan Palacky - a musician who plays on an amplified knitting machine called the Dopleta 160. “It is like listening to this piece of music for the first time, still untouched by the unique experience of Ivan Palacky’s peculiar performance.

Maria Lynn Ehren has grown up right before our very eyes. First appearing on various Thai TV commercials and magazines at the tender age of 14, she instantly became fashion’s NEW darling - and we have no doubts as to why: she’s polite, HARD WORKING and full of smiles. Now at 18, almost 6 foot tall and fresh out of high school, Maria has her eye SET on two new territories: 1) SURVIVING University life in Rotterdam where she is currently studying and 2) Her POP/DANCE debut album ‘MAXI SINGLES’ which is out this month.

What were some of the challenges you faced while working on this album? The main challenge was time. As I started 4 years ago...I didn’t really have any interesting experiences to sing about. When I turned 17 though, there were many events that I have talked to with the writers of my songs, and I also became more defined as a person. I didn’t really have a distinct style or personality at the age of 14...but at 17 my first song was finally ready to be sung. From the first song, BLUR, the style of it gave birth to my other 4 songs that will be present in my ‘Maxi Singles’ album.
Can you tell us a little about what can we expect from it? It’s the first pop/dance genre of SmallRoom, so it has a very cool feel to it. As SmallRoom is an Indy company, the pop/dance style is very unique compared to all of the other pop/dance songs here in Thailand. I believe it’s contributing a new taste to the Thai market, and I’m hoping everyone will like it! So many artists from SmallRoom have contributed to the making of this album. A lot of people ranging from the owner of SR, who has also been my producer, various artists from different bands, SR staff, and dancers have helped make this album possible. My album will have 5 singles, including an enhanced CD with my music vdos.
Can you share with us some crazy stories that happened while you where on the set shooting all the various vdos for the album? Well, my first music vdo took 18 hours ! AND it was located at a VERY hot and stuffy place. Put hot and stuffy place together with dancing, make-up and hair spray and you’ve got crazy. The third mv I did was located outdoors at an airplane museum...HOT MUCH ? But overall very fun. I shot my last two music vdos in one go. It took 20 hours but for 2 music vdos that’s pretty good. My music vdos take quite a long time because they’re very detailed and artistic. Also, the dance scenes take a while (tiring but fun!).
Now that you’ve graduated high school, what’s your next plan? Have you thought of going into acting? I’ve thought about how cool it’d be to be in a film!.. but there’s no time for that at the moment. I’m going to Holland for my bachelors and that will take 3 years. During the summers I will have a lot of time to work and during winter a week or so. My goal now is to survive university. I’m quite nervous as we speak because I have NO idea what it’s actually going to be like. I’ve only heard stories and seen crazy movies...but I will soon discover what college is really about.
Do you have any musicians or artists whom you admire or listen to? I’ve always loved Beyonce. Ever since Destiny’s Child. I must admit though, in 1st-2nd grade, me and 4 friends made a ‘Spice Girls club’, so I’ve always been interested in the singing and dancing thing. I never expected to ‘actually’ have my own album though. One of my favorite Bands is Maroon 5. Their music is just so fun to listen to and the stories are easy to relate to. I listen to a wide variety ranging from classical to rock, but my playlist is mostly filled with chill music, such as songs from Mike Posner, Colbie Callait, Travis McCoy, James Morrison, Bruno Mars, Shontelle, Ne-Yo, Leona Lewis and just recently Charice. But when I want to dance, I turn to Usher, Rihanna and various DJs.
Any last words you would like to say to our readers? I hope whoever has a chance to listen to my songs / watch my mvs will enjoy my music and can hopefully sing along. As this is my first album, I have come to realise how difficult it is to stop people from loading fake versions of my songs. My 2 singles that are out on the radio, but not legally able to download, have already been downloaded by many of my friends! (my friends!! crazy right?). But I want to stress that the sound on the audio CD will be of a much better quality. There’s also many special features so buying my album would be worth every baht. The beats and music in my songs are very nice, therefore the real audio CD will give the best sounds. So don’t forget to buy my album if you guys can!

Mathieu Lehanneur is a French industrial designer who explores the capacity of how nature and technology can co-exist and work towards improving a better quality of life for us. His natural air filtering system ‘Andrea’, for which he worked with Havard professor David Edwards, and ‘Local River’ are just a few examples we’d like to highlight for this issue..

アンドレア Incorporating nature’s best air filters - Plants - the Andrea system is able to remove more airborne toxins in the household than any other common HEPA and carbon filtering machine. In fact, it is able to remove dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde up to 4400% more effectively. The secret to this remarkably efficient apparatus lies in its design. “We came across a series of NASA patents about air filters and plants, and we noticed that the filters had not been designed to be very effective, nor were they at all designed well. With this, we set out to make a better filter and a better design,” David Edward tells us.
LOCAL RIVER ローカルリバー Built upon the principle of co-existence and traditional knowledge, the Local River is a storage unit that houses freshwater fish along with a mini vegetable patch. Here “the plants extract nutrients from the nitrate-rich dejecta of the fish. In doing so they act as a natural filter that purifies the water and maintains a vital balance for the eco-system in which the fish live”.

which data can be translated into tangible presentations. The book documents a range of samples from maps, graphs and tables, to more unusual things such as stereo photography and courtroom exhibits. It envisions information paths as the way for a new standard of visual literacy along with detailed chapters on perception, escaping the flatlands of both paper and computer screen, and the use of colors.

CARLOS TARRATS カーロス・タロッツ “What’s nice is the amount of creative freedom we have. I am just one of a few people that do design for them,” says Carlos Tarrats, when asked about designing graphics for provocative fashion brand American Apparel. It certainly is something to be proud of because American Apparel is one of the largest clothing manufacturers in the United States and one that also dubs itself as a sweatshop-free company. Carlos started out studying arts and digital design at the University of Santa Barbara and Photography at the ArtCenter College of Design. When asked about the difference between working with design and photography, he replies: “Both are really very similar. I go with gut feeling and work very spontaneously. If there is a difference it’s with the photos - there is more prep work beforehand. Whereas with design, the thought process takes place as I work. I usually pause and see what’s going on.” Carlos draws his inspiration from European and Japanese design, as well as enjoying movies like Ong Bak: Thai warrior (good for him )

SAYAKA GANZ サヤカ・ガンツ Disregarded objects find new life within Sayaka Ganz’s impressive sculptures. “I’m always collecting and reclaiming objects, from thrift stores, donations and dumpsters,” she tells us. “I have always had a passion for putting together different types of puzzles, and I love making my own puzzles by fitting together seemingly random objects”. As a child, Sayaka was always traveling: whether to different cities around Japan, moving to Brazil, finishing off high school in Hong Kong, or her current residence at Fort Wayne, Indiana where she lives and teaches with her husband. “My work process is reminiscent of my experiences growing up in several different countries, of being disconnected from the place I was born. I began searching for a new community where I truly belong”. Sayaka’s sculptures are inspired by nature and are intensively intricate. “The white horse ‘wind’ took me the longest. It took about 9 months to finish. I was working on other sculptures simultaneously, so if I was just working on this one piece alone it might have taken me 4 or 5 months,” she tells us.

EVELIN KASIKOV エヴェリン・カスコフ Originally from Estonia, Evelin Kasikov now resides in Greenwich, London where she creates cross-stitched artwork for clients like WIRED and The New York Times Magazine. Evelin mixes the craft of cross-stitching with her love of press and typography beautifully. “CMYK cross-stitch is a tactile halftone conversion, a handmade printing technique. I prepare a halftone image for cross-stitch according to conventional screen angles: Cyan 105°, Magenta 75°, Yellow 90° and Black 45°. Then, I mark crosses for stitching and stitch layer by layer,” she explains. Evelin developed this technique while studying for her masters at St Martins. “I had not used embroidery before. But I had been working as a print designer and I have always had interest in materials and the physical side of design. I think production is just as important as the idea and it is very much part of a design process.”

ART LEBEDEV アート・レヴェデフ The Reflectious clock’s sleek and triangulated surface is enough to draw attention to itself, but the real star feature of this clock is, as studio Art Lebedev puts it, are the “60 rotating mirrors that successively reflect a single laser beam at precise angles to draw numbers” in it. The Reflectious clock is currently in the process of production and will be officially launched within a year.

“I wanted to take a psychological longing for immersion in the natural world, most often expressed by figurative language or metaphor, and make it visually concrete. The result is often a little surreal. I also wanted to contrast this romantic ideal of union with the natural world with our contemporary destructive impact on the environment, and show that this connection is often disturbing or discomfiting.” Kate is currently working on a piece that incorporates octopi, which she had a close encounter with while snorkeling off of Koh Phangan in southern Thailand.

TENFACE draws its inspiration from the RAMAKIEN, a Thai interpretation of the RAMAYANA. According to the story, there was a war between a king and a 10-faced giant named TOSSAKAN, who were both fighting for the love of the beautiful Sita. TOSSAKAN, with ten pairs of eyes, signifies wisdom beyond the norm. The story of RAMAKIEN is so cleverly infused throughout every corner of the building, that it feels as though you’re walking into someone’s home art collection. With a calm and sophisticated atmosphere, TENFACE is certainly for someone with a discerning taste in the arts.
