YOUTH CENTRE

FREE MONTHLY EVENT!

Located at the Neighbourhood Learning Centre. Drop-in starts September 12, 2022!

Check the Youth Centre Board or the Youth Page or Events page on Recreation.OakBay.ca website. A safe supervised place for youth to hang out, study, or burn off energy. For teens 11–18 years. Monday–Thursday: 11:30am–12:30pm Monday and Wednesday: 3:00–4:30pm Friday: 1:45pm–4:30pm

Book the Youth Centre for a Private Party

The 1300 square-foot Youth Centre Room comes with its own kitchen, washrooms, a state-of-theart television, surround sound and computers, as well as a foosball table, pool table and table tennis. The Youth Centre kitchen is available and includes a stove, oven, sink, fridge and freezer. Please bring your own food, plates, cutlery, candles, etc. The staff member will assist with clean-up. Please take everything you bring. If you are interested in booking the Youth Center for a private party, please look for availability on line under Birthdays for the Youth Center.

Cost is $125 for a 2 hour event, use of the facilities, and a staff member to assist.

LEADERS IN TRAINING

GETTING THE LEADING EDGE: LEADERS IN TRAINING 12-17 YRS

Thinking about getting your first job? This course will concentrate on basic job preparation skills with a focus on retail, cash and customer service. Workshop includes resume and cover letter writing, mock interviews, behaviour management strategies, and lesson planning. Upon completion of this course, students will have the opportunity to gain up to 30 hours of valuable work/volunteer experience in the many departments of Oak Bay Recreation. Work options include shadowing employees during public skates as cashier and skate shop attendants. This is an invaluable opportunity to gain work experience and add to your resume!

The before and after school times or occasional outing for parents are easily dealt with when youth are HAPPY: Home Alone Program Preparing Youth. This program, designed by Kathleen Lee, focuses on home and personal safety and emergency procedures for situations that could occur when youth are home alone. A resource booklet with worksheets and tips, plus a parent and guardian handout, is sent home with registrants.

RED CROSS BABYSITTING TRAINING 11-15 YRS

This fun and interactive Red Cross certification course teaches the basics of childcare including: the business of babysitting, caring for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children. You will learn how to create safe environments and how to handle basic first aid situations. The Red Cross manual is included in the course. 100% attendance is required. Pre-requisite: participants must be 11 years old by the first day of the course or completed grade 5.

YOUTH WEIGHT ROOM ORIENTATION 13-14 YRS

This two hour orientation for youth ages 13-14 years will provide youth with an introduction to safely use the weight room. Etiquette and basic workout parameters will be covered and upon completion of this course, participants will be permitted access to the following weight rooms: Oak Bay Recreation Centre, Esquimalt Recreation Centre, City of Victoria Recreation Centre, Saanich Recreation Centre, and West Shore Recreation Centre. After completing this course, youth can enter the Oak Bay Recreation weight room with a parent present or when an attendant is on duty. Specific rules may apply at different recreation centres.

YOUTH BIKE SKILLS COURSE 10-15 YRS

The youth bike skills course teaches traffic safety, cyclist responsibilities, and bike handling skills to develop safe cycling behaviours that make biking fun and safe. Participants will leave the course with the skills to ride to school or around their neighbourhood. The course is delivered in alternating 45-minute segments in-class and on-bike, followed by a guided road ride led by experienced instructors on quiet roads and pathways, where they will practice the learned skills. Please note that participants should already be able to ride independently and continuously on their bikes before the course begins.

ARTS EVENTS VOLUNTEERS

Assist with Exhibitions, Performances, Workshops, Walks/Tours, Lectures and Special Events occurring throughout the year in Oak Bay.

ARTS EXHIBITION JURY VOLUNTEERS

Curate exhibition selection and advise on acquisition of public art for the Municipality of Oak Bay.
