President’s Message The tassels have been turned once again on “the hill,” having added 48 students to the Oak Hill Academy Alumni. Year 133 now rests as another proud chapter in OHA’s ongoing legacy. The theme for our school this past year was “Community.” And in my convocation address last August I spoke about how we would emphasize the OHA community throughout the year. At the closing Academy Awards on Graduation eve, I returned to this theme, sharing how each day at Oak Hill begins with prayer and devotion, with our devotions— particularly those shared by our students—providing the distinct shape and color of our community over the course of the year. With the J.F. Fletcher Chapel overflowing with parents, relatives, graduates, and underclassmen, I shared … “The students will likely remember some of these moments from our morning devotions this past year. From an International student with a commonly mispronounced name, we were told that ‘When you say my name right, then you put me into your heart’; from a student who endured a difficult childhood illness, we heard a message in November about being thankful; we grieved with Mrs. Black during her devotion about her late father, and we were surprised when Rev. Turnmire told the students that he loved them after Senior Sunday in Young’s Chapel; we celebrated with a student whose parents surprised him on his birthday, showing up in chapel all the way from Michigan on the day of his senior devotion; we heard a student devotion about the death of a mother and we heard a student devotion about the death a father; and in one of the last student devotions of the year, we were challenged: ‘how are you going to make it count?’ As President of the school, I shared a few devotions from this platform as well, often using objects as the source of my talk. A bag of leaves, a thank you card, a lump of coal, a $100 bill, an obituary, and the school seal. The leaves were collected from various trees around campus, signifying the changing of the seasons and the stability of the mighty oak tree; a homemade thank you card that was attached to my front door, a product of one of our advisee programs encouraging students to appreciate people in their community and to say thank you; a lump of coal, reminding students that with the dropping temperatures of late fall, our furnaces would be turned on (eventually), and that members of our maintenance staff would be working around the clock to keep the furnaces burning (literally), a reminder for us that our community is larger and includes more people than they may realize. In fact, I brought the maintenance staff in to chapel and asked returning students if any of the kids knew their names—very few did then, many more do now. A$100 dollar bill, when we were dealing with the ugly issue of theft, which is so troubling and can cause so much damage to our community. I left the cash on the floor in front of the door and with no teachers or staff around to observe, I challenged the kids to walk over
top of it one by one, and for the last person out to bring it to my office if it was still there; senior Tyler Marsh brought the $100 bill to me within five minutes. I showed the students an obituary of a recently deceased alumnus, who, even though he was not particularly wealthy, was very kind and generous to the school in life and in death. And our school seal, with its ‘founded in 1878,’ an Oak Tree, mountains, a cross, and a textbook, depicting in small but important symbols who we are at OHA. These devotions are daily lessons, taken together over the course of the past year, sometimes shared aloud even when we are at our most vulnerable; they define who we are, and on this day, Graduation eve, they give us perspective. Together, they paint the picture of our community. Community. Our theme for the year … community. Class of 2012, this is your community, Oak Hill Academy. And now our community, which is entirely unique unto itself and will never be comprised exactly like it was in this year, enters its final chapter. On August 29, 2011, we began the year with the chiming of the Academy Bell at convocation and, now for 133rd time, we sound it in honor of our graduating class, the class of 2012.” The 48 graduates then processed silently from the chapel to the chiming of the Academy Bell. The traditions, mission, and ministry of Oak Hill Academy all continue … In fact, Year 134 begins right now. My very best, Michael D. Groves President Follow Dr. Groves on Twitter at DrGrovesOHA.

Donor Breakfast 2012
The annual Donor Appreciation Breakfast was held graduation morning on the lawn at the Hough Dormitory Picnic Shelter. This annual event honors the members of The Oak Club, The Founders Club, The President’s Club, The Red and Gold Club, and the Legacy Associates who support the mission of Oak Hill Academy.
Although unable to attend, John and Dorothy Lenore were recognized as the “Philanthropists of the Year” by Dr. Michael Groves. The Lenore’s son, Jamie, received the acknowledgement on their behalf during a recent visit to campus. Mr. and Mrs. Lenore are tremendous supporters of Oak Hill Academy and her mission. Oak Hill Academy proudly salutes our many donors.
Parents’ Days 2012
Parents’ Days 2012, held April 5th and 6th, was a great showcase for Oak Hill Academy’s students. Parents witnessed first hand all of the activities and ways our student body is involved in “life on the hill.” Thursday afternoon’s events included an in-house horse show, a basketball scrimmage and performance by our cheerleaders, recognition of the spring sports teams, and a college application presentation. Everyone then enjoyed the Parent/Student Banquet in Vaughan Dining Hall. The evening was capped off with music by the OHA chorus and pep band, and the drama club’s production of “Grease.” Parents attended classes with their children on Friday morning followed by the President’s Forum. There was also an art show throughout the two day event. The annual Parents’ Days silent auction was once again a big success raising just over $8,000 with the proceeds going toward technology upgrades in the academic building. Oak Hill Academy would like to thank all of the parents and supporters who donated and bid on items and make cash contributions to the auction. Thank you!

Gold Team Visits China The Old Hill Academy Gold team was invited to visit China to represent the United States on a Men’s 18 and Under basketball tour. They were joined by teams from Australia, Lithuania, and China and visited three provinces during their stay. The team played nine exhibition games losing only once against some great international competition and also visited several schools during their time in China. The opportunity to travel abroad during their spring break was an invaluable experience for the team.
ESPN Visits Campus The OHA community welcomed Mr. Ronnie Flores of ESPN to campus on Friday, May 11th for a much-anticipated ceremony in an assembly held in Fletcher Chapel. Mr. Flores unveiled a custom made championship banner for our gym, presented Coach Smith with the ESPN Boy’s High School National Championship trophy for 2011-12, and awarded a medal to each individual player as well. A representative from the Jostens Company was present and awarded each team member and coach with personalized championship rings. OHA’s Nike rep, Tony Dorado, was also on hand for the celebration and handed out a specially made Jordan Brand tennis shoe to everyone on the team in honor of their #1 ranking and perfect (44-0) season. Coach Smith said that the 2011-2012 Warrior squad may not be the most talented but they might be the best “team” he has ever coached. They played unselfishly all year and had great team chemistry. The Warriors National title is Oak Hill’s eighth overall. Coach Smith was also named the Coach of the Year in boy’s high school basketball by USA Today for the fourth time and he received the Naismith Award for the second time in his career.
Noonkester Social End of Year Picnic Always a highlight of the school year, the annual end of school picnic at Noonkester Park is a great way for students to relax and left off some steam before the beginning of “dead week” and final exams. There was something for everyone as the students ate, swam, rode paddle boats, played cards, tried the inflatable obstacle course, and competed in the golf shot contest. The evening ended with everyone around a bonfire reminiscing about the school year while anticipating the end of classes and graduation.
Summer of 2012 – Under Construction! Thanks to the generosity of Oak Hill Academy supporters there will be a lot of construction around campus this summer. Construction for the new Dixon Garden and Entranceway in front of the Vaughan Administration Building, the courtyard at Hough Dormitory, and a new barn at the Lenore Family Equestrian Center began the week after graduation. Oak Hill Academy would like to thank John and Dorothy Lenore, Marshall and Peggy Frank, the Pearl Dixon Family, and the Williams-Berry Charitable Foundation for making all of this possible.

William Bruce Endowed Scholarship Established Beloved OHA alumnus William Basil Bruce, III died on March 15, 2012 in Stevens Point, WI. One of the founding members of the “Over the Hill Alumni Gang,” William gave abundantly of his time, energy, and considerable painting skills during his annual summer treks back to his alma mater. He was raised in Farmville, Virginia and served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Forestal during the Vietnam War. William received a pharmacy degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago and a nursing degree from North Central Technical College, Wausau. He worked the entirety of his career as a pharmacist in various stores throughout central Wisconsin. William was a legacy associate for Oak Hill Academy, designating our school in his will as an intended recipient for many of his possessions (tools, vehicles, trailers, and painting supplies); OHA is also a beneficiary of an IRA. The school is honored by William’s compassion and generosity—and we are so pleased to announce at this time the establishment of the William Bruce Scholarship. All monetary gifts given to OHA in William’s memory will be directed to this fund. Also, as the school liquidates certain possessions bequeathed from the estate, we anticipate the healthy growth of The William Bruce Scholarship over the next year. What a tremendous gift for our school and a wonderful legacy for William Bruce.
$1 Per Year Campaign Update In order to involve as many alumni and former students as possible in the mission of OHA and listed on our Alumni “Honor Roll,” the “$1 Per Year Campaign” was launched in 2011. The “$1 Per Year Campaign” asks alumni and former students to give back to their Alma Mater by donating at least $1 for every year since they graduated from or attended Oak Hill Academy. Our goal was to have as many folks as possible listed in the Alumni Giving section of the “State of the Academy Report” and on our new website. Thank you to the following alumni and former students who made a contribution to OHA between June 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012: 1930-1939 Hazel Bonham Ball Edith Paisley Murphy Leona Porter Sturgill 1940-1949 Lavonne Weaver Barni Thomas Bland Bennett, Jr. LaVaun Halsey Callison Ruth Hash Etter Gwyn Halsey Margaret Anderson Morris Ralph Noonkester 1950-1959 Rex Anderson Merle Watts Angle Dorothy Hash Billings Barrie Ann Brown Rex Halsey Geri Golliher Hancock Thomas Hash Maxie Price Hopkins Nancy Brown Jackson Randall Lane Rex Liu Glenna Halsey Morton Doris Wilson Patteson Cleta Haga Roberts Ida Mae Speeks Robert Wilson
