President’s Paragraph Following is the text of Dr. Groves’ Convocation Address: August 31, 2015

H

ello, and welcome to Oak Hill Academy, in this our 137th year.

Today we assemble for the very first time as a school, for convocation. We gather here in our chapel as new students, returning students, faculty, and staff. We gather from the outset as a community—a community invested in one another. We are also a community that stretches far beyond the confines of the J.F. Fletcher Chapel. Think about this … our founders met just as we are meeting today, way back in the Fall of 1878. Always take comfort, and take a bit of pride, in knowing that the Oak Hill Academy family is grander and more expansive than we ever may appear in this single room. Our theme for this year is INVESTED. We, the faculty and staff, want for you the very best. As such, we are going to push you to secure for yourselves new levels of success. Why are we going to do this? We do this because we are invested in you. In this community, we invest in each other; we are invested in how we live, how we model behavior for you, how we all shall aspire to grow throughout this year—individually and collectively. We are also invested in our core values: Community, Responsibility, Moral Courage, and Transformation. These are values that our school treasures deeply … and these are the values we will emphasize the most over the course of the next year. Take care of each other, take care of yourself, take care of your school. INVEST. And know this, like with any good investment, developing quality, life-changing values takes time. Graduation Day is 264 days away; so, for perspective, know that we are running a marathon, not a sprint. But a longer race is actually a very good thing, for seldom do good things happen quickly. And, it takes a long time for the great things in life to take root and grow. It takes a long time for values to be instilled. It takes several careful steps to climb a ladder all the way to the top. And, yet, you should also know that a fall from the top rung can occur with only a single misstep. So, this year, as you take care and grow, and as you lean on one another, and love each other, and love your school, I encourage you to be a person of moral courage and responsibility. Represent OHA well; make good decisions.

Recognize always that we—the entirety of our Oak Hill Academy Community—we are in this together, for the long run. So, be patient. It shall all be worth it … because worthy investments take time. On behalf of the faculty and staff, and the Oak Hill Academy Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to welcome you to campus. May God bless you, and may God continue to bless Oak Hill Academy. 137 Scho Year Be th

On Monday morning, August 31st, the original school bell chimed as Oak Hill Academy officially began its 137th academic year. With this new beginning comes the anticipation of a successful year by students and faculty alike. This year our diverse group of students comes to us from 24 states and 15 foreign countries. All have come together to create our unique community on “the hill where we strive to provide a quality education for all who come our way. Amid all of the hustle and bustle of unpacking, finding room assignments, getting class schedules, and picking up supplies and uniforms a new sense of independence is discovered; new friendships are created; old friendships are rekindled; and another chapter in the history of the school is written. The entire Oak Hill Academy faculty and staff welcomes our students to campus and looks forward to another successful year.

BOYS DORMITORIES CAMPAIGN UPDATE The Glenda Elizabeth Dixon Hall is now complete. Fourteen students moved into this beautiful new building when school started in August. The matching Bradley Dormitory is already under construction and we anticipate a late spring completion for this second addition to our growing campus. Please consider assisting OHA in this important campaign. $210,000 is needed to fulfill the $1,218,000 total for both buildings. Several naming opportunities exist at the $10,000 level (student rooms) and one at the $25,000 level (resident manager apartment). For 137 years Oak Hill Academy has stood proudly as the “Turning Point.” Please know that every gift and pledge makes a difference in the lives of our students.

Jewell Ford Patton Triplex

For the past several years Oak Hill has been blessed with the steady growth of The Jewell Ford Patton Endowed Memorial Fund, created in honor of the late mother of former OHA President, Ed Patton. After a meeting with Ed and Carolyn Patton this past spring, it was decided to direct a substantial portion of the fund toward the construction of a new home for faculty. Hence, we are pleased to announce the plans for the Jewell Ford Patton Triplex. This 2,700+ square foot complex is comprised of three separate dwellings (one larger threebedroom/two-bath residence, and two one-bedroom units) and is being built overlooking Noonkester Park. The residence is scheduled for completion in spring 2016. We express our gratitude to the Patton Family for their continued support of OHA and her mission.

OHA Welcomes Mr. Joe Gagne Mr. Gagne joins Oak Hill Academy as the resident manager of Williams-Berry Dormitory and soccer team coach. Originally from Orrington, Maine, he is a boarding school alum. After high school, Mr. Gagne attended Elmira College in New York where he earned a bachelors’ degree in business administration. Mr. Gagne is a avid sports fan playing soccer, hockey, and baseball throughout high school. He looks forward to making a lasting impression on the OHA students and is excited to be part of the community.

Mr. David Laney Mr. Laney is a 2011 graduate of OHA and has returned to his Alma Mater as resident manager of Fields Dormitory. After graduating from Oak Hill, Mr. Laney enlisted in the Army where he served as an Intelligence Analyst. After his time in the military he returned to his native Tennessee where he met his wife Nat. Mr. Laney enjoys engineering, programming, hiking, reading, skiing, and a good cup of coffee. He and Nat are excited to be part of the OHA community and look forward to the school year.

Mr. Kyle Mackey Mr. Mackey joins Oak Hill Academy as a mathematics instructor. He is originally from Washington, D.C., and received his B.S. in Engineering Physics from Morgan State University and his M.Ed. in Instructional Technology from Cambridge College. He has a background in teaching science, technology, engineering, and, of course, mathematics. Mr. Mackey and his wife, Michelle, enjoy a plethora of activities including flying trapeze, kickball, and most of all, raising their children Maxwell (16 months) and Kayla (1 month).

New Faculty Members Miss Addison Smith Miss Smith joins Oak Hill Academy as a resident manager in the girls’ dormitory. She is originally from Gainesville, Virginia. Miss Smith received her B.A. in Journalism and Political Science from Duquesne University. She also attended New York University where she took graduate courses in publishing and digital media, finding particular interest in children’s publishing. Miss Smith is a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan stemming from her internship with the team. She enjoys reading, cooking and not using the Oxford comma. She is very excited about the times ahead of her at OHA!

Mr. Chris Stanton Mr. Stanton joins Oak Hill Academy as a Spanish teacher. He is originally from West Chester, Pennsylvania, and received his bachelor’s degree from Mansfield University in 2010. After graduating, he spent a year in Philadelphia volunteering with City Year, part of Americorps. From 2011 to 2014, Mr. Stanton taught English in Mexico. Mr. Stanton enjoys hiking, the mountain views, and a good cup of tea. He is looking forward to seeing his students grow and meet with great success. He is very happy to be part of the Oak Hill community.

Alumni Weekend 2015 Another great Alumni Weekend was held July 17-19 with many former students and their families in attendance. This annual event is open free of charge to all alumni and former students and their families who wish to attend. The Welcome Home Reception at the Ussery Archives on Friday evening kicked off the weekend. Saturday morning began with the annual alumni meeting led by OHA president Dr. Michael Groves. Class pictures, campus tours led by current students, and lunch in Vaughan Dining Hall followed. The afternoon began with a brief memorial service to pay tribute to alumni who had passed during the previous year. The tolling of the campus bell and singing of the Alma Mater marked this occasion. Our summer school students then joined the group for an ice cream social. A new addition to the weekend was live bluegrass music by The Hard Tymes Band throughout the afternoon. The day’s events were capped off with dinner, dancing, and a silent auction at the Mississippi Pavilion in Noonkester Park. The weekend wrapped up on Sunday morning with the Alumni Brunch at the Hough Dormitory Picnic Shelter and worship service at Young’s Chapel Baptist Church. Our goal is to make this weekend the best it can possibly be for all OHA alumni and former students and their families. If you have never attended or if its been several years since you have been to an Alumni Weekend, please join your classmates and come celebrate with us July 15-17, 2016!

“Over the Hill Alumni” Gang The 2015 alumni work week was again fun for all. The “Over the Hill” Gang made their way to campus for a week of work and fun. They completed their usual gardening tasks and also power washed and stained several decks around campus. The highlight of the week for the gang was to be the first group of alumni to sing the Alma Mater at the new amphitheater! A special thanks to all of the workers, Don Krauss, Harry and Sarah (Ussery) Sink, Ted Ussery, Ann Brown, Mary and Otis Reamy, Jo Ann (Watkins) and Carroll Harvey, Ron Anderson, Bonnie Lambert Cofield, Diann Cramer, Jim Herchenrider, and his son-inlaw Ben. We look forward to the return of the “Over the Hill Gang” again next summer!

Become Part of the “Over the Hill Alumni” Gang A Great Way to Give Back to Your School! Attention alumni and former students – Are you willing to get a little dirty, sleep in a dorm room, eat in Vaughan Dining Hall, laugh a lot, and sweat little? If so, give Dr. Groves or Tim Henry a call about becoming part of the “Over the Hill Alumni” Gang. The 2016 work week will be July 11-15!

$1 Per Year Campaign Update In order to have as many alumni and former students as possible involved in the mission of OHA and listed on our Alumni “Honor Roll” the “$1 Per Year Campaign” was launched in 2011. The “$1 Per Year Campaign” asks alumni and former students to give back to their Alma Mater by donating at least $1 for every year since they graduated from or attended Oak Hill Academy. Our goal for 2015-2016 is to have as many alumni as possible listed in the Alumni Giving section of the “State of the Academy Report” and on our web site. We challenge all former students to give back to your Alma Mater in this easy and affordable way. Thank you to the following alumni and former students who made a contribution to OHA between June 1 – October 8, 2015

Oak Hill Academy Second Annual Alumni Homecoming November 7, 2015 Oak Hill Academy’s Second Annual Homecoming will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2015. The one-day event will be held in conjunction with the home Gold Team basketball game against Princeton Hall. All alumni and former students are invited to participate in the activities. Plans include a campus wide homecoming parade (alumni are encouraged to be creative by making small scale floats or getting together themed marching groups) and pregame tailgating for alumni and current students. Meriwether-Godsey, OHA’s food service, will provide main course selections. Alumni classes or groups may participate by providing a favorite tailgating staple to share. We will have reserved seating at the game for all alumni and their families. Please visit the “Alumni” page of the OHA web site for the complete schedule and to RSVP for the event!

Gold Team News 2015-2016 Season Outlook The 2015-2016 team looks to build on the storied tradition of the Oak Hill basketball program. This year’s squad consists of six seniors, four juniors, and two sophomores. This balance should provide for an exciting season and also bode well for the future. 6-10 senior Harry Giles is the consensus #1 player in the country. Returning seniors 6-7 Joe Hampton, 7-0 Rodney Miller, and 6-10 Khadim Sy provide the Warriors with the nation’s deepest frontline. Senior transfers 6-7 Braxton Key and 6-7 Mario Kegler will be counted on heavily this year. Underclassmen Matt Coleman, Lindell Wigginton, Devontae Shuler, Ty-Shon Alexander, Montez Mathis and Kenny Nwuba make this year’s team the deepest and maybe the most talented in our school history. The Warriors will travel to nine different states as well as Canada to once again play the nation’s toughest schedule in hopes of garnering their ninth national title. The 2015-2016 season should be another banner year and one that continues to uphold the Oak Hill Basketball legacy.
