President’s Paragraph Following is the text of Dr. Groves’ Convocation Address: September 2, 2013
Y
ou are beginning a journey today that will lead you down a unique and wonderful path. Allow me to be forthright: As I shared with the faculty and staff in our orientation last week, this is a journey that will affect you for the rest of your life. So, yes, it is that important. And, yes, we are so very happy to be travelling alongside you. I have a few guarantees for you. If you are a new student, you are likely to be held to a higher standard than you have ever been held before today; if you are a returning student, you will definitely be held to a higher standard than even you were here last year. You are going to be encouraged, nudged, cajoled, and forced to grow. And this is all going to be a good thing; it shall not always be pain-free or easy, but I promise you, it will be a good thing. What I am asking in return from you is for you to be patient. If this were a race, then this is a marathon, it is not a sprint. So—be patient. Work hard—and work hard consistently. Take advantage of this opportunity, encourage one another, build a community among yourselves in tandem with the community that is already and always will be the community of Oak Hill Academy. This school is a very special place. And make no mistake about it. The faculty and staff who surround you today, we love our school. But also know this, the primary reason we love our school is because of you, the students. Of course we have special buildings, special events, special times of the year, and we may even have special colleagues. But—it is you, the students, you are the school. And this is the reason why I encourage everyone to use the pronouns “we” and “our.” It’s not my school. It is not your school. Oak Hill Academy is our school.
You are going to hear a lot this year about character, for that is our theme for the year. I encourage you to embrace this notion, listen carefully to the devotions, the advisee lessons, and the curriculum. Every person in this room—students, faculty and staff, and administrators—we all can and will benefit from a healthy dose of character. You will also hear a lot this year about accreditation, for this is the year of Oak Hill Academy’s accreditation visit, which occurs during the month of October. It will be very important for you, and for all of us, because it is very important for our school. And, you need to know that you will hear a lot this year about our school in general, this place called Oak Hill Academy. Where for 135 years, students have gathered from across the United States and from around the world, in this out of the way place with the funny name … Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. Today, you are joining a tremendous legacy, for many have walked these hallways and these hills before you. On this fresh new day, this first day of school, September 1, 2013, I encourage you to take comfort, know that you are not alone. Generations of folks have been paving the way for you, and have been doing so for 135 years. So the journey to graduation on May 16, 2014 begins today, with the chiming of our Academy Bell. We ring this old school bell, only three times per year; once in the summer to honor alumni who have passed; once per graduate on graduation eve; and today, to signal the start of our school year. The Chiming of the Academy Bell I welcome you to our school. May God bless you, and may God continue to bless Oak Hill Academy. Year 135 begins right now.

Oak Hill Academy officially began its 135th academic year. With this new beginning comes the anticipation of a successful year by students and faculty alike.
This year our diverse group of students comes to us from 27 states, the District of Columbia, and 17 foreign countries. All have come together to create our unique community on “the hill� where we strive to provide a quality education for all who come our way. Amid all of the hustle and bustle of unpacking, finding room assignments, getting class schedules, and picking up supplies and uniforms a new sense of independence is discovered; new friendships are created; old friendships are rekindled; and another chapter in the history of the school is written. The entire Oak Hill Academy faculty and staff welcome our students to campus and looks forward to another successful year.
“The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” The Oak Hill Academy school-wide reading selection this year aptly encompasses our 2013-2014 theme of “Character.” “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” is a historical fiction of the unlikeliest of friends: the son of a Nazi commandant and a Jewish concentration camp inmate. Written by John Boyne and published in 2006 by David Fickling Books, the story was made into a major motion picture in 2008. The novel, set in Nazi Germany, begins when nine-year-old Bruno and his family must move from their lovely home in Berlin to a new house in an unfamiliar place called “Out-With.” Bruno is greatly disappointed and mourns the fact that he no longer has friends to play with and that there are no other houses for miles around. Bruno’s inquisitive nature gets the better of him and he discovers that there are people living nearby. People living in a high-walled building; people who walk around listlessly wearing nothing but blue-striped pajamas. Bruno’s imagination is ignited and it is not long before he finds a way to reach this place and befriend a boy, just like him, who has had to leave his home behind because of the “Fury.” “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” explores the beauty of a child’s innocence in a time of war, the common desire we all have for friendship, and the fences—both literal and figurative— that we must all navigate and choose whether or not to break down. The “character” values exemplified by the young boys throughout the novel are not politically, religiously, or culturally biased: responsibility, caring, fairness, trustworthiness, and ultimately respect for a fellow human being. I encourage you to read this book together as a family and to discuss the pervasive themes of friendship, kindness, and innocence that develop the character of two young individuals. When issues and questions are raised about the narrative, you may be surprised by the depth of the responses. Ultimately, we soon realize that fences like this exist all over the world……and it is hoped that none of us will ever have to encounter one.
OHA Welcomes Ms. Jussara Ave-Lallemant Ms. Ave-Lallemant, better known around campus as Ms. J., joins Oak Hill Academy as a resident manager in the girl’s dormitory. She holds a bachelor’s degree in management and human resources from Trevecca Nazarene University. After working as a special education teacher for eight years Ms. Ave-Lallemant decided it was time for change. She loves working with kids and has always thought she would enjoy being part of a boarding school environment. Ms. J. has two brothers and two sisters. In her free time she enjoys reading, playing golf, and cheering on the Braves.
Mr. Zach Fulbright Mr. Fulbright joins Oak Hill Academy as our music teacher. He was born and raised in North Carolina where he currently resides with his wife. Mr. Fulbright earned his bachelor’s degree in music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his master’s degree from Appalachian State University. He also completed three years of additional graduate work in music at The Graduate Center, City University of New York. He is currently pursuing his master’s of education degree. Outside of Oak Hill Academy, Mr. Fulbright is the music director of Jefferson United Methodist Church. In his free time he enjoys traveling, writing, flyfishing and spending time outdoors. He is very proud to be a part of OHA!
Mr. Michael Burns Mr. Burns joins Oak Hill Academy as the rotating resident manager in the boys’ dormitories. Originally from Hartford, Kentucky, he received his bachelor’s degree in sports ministry from Campbellsville University and is an ordained Baptist minister. He has an older sister and is the proud uncle of Lucas. In his free time Mr. Burns enjoys playing golf and watching almost any sport. He is excited about being able to work in all the boys’ dorms as it will give him the opportunity to meet and interact with more of the students. Mr. Burns loves the sense of family at Oak Hill and believes he is part of something very special.
Mrs. Maranda Thompson Mrs. Thompson joins Oak Hill Academy as a math teacher and our college advisor. She is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, and is a graduate of Clarion University. Joining Mrs. Thompson on campus are her husband, Bryan, and two-year old son, Grant. Mrs. Thompson is an athlete at heart having played softball in both high school and college. In her free time she enjoys reading, crocheting, sewing, and running. Mrs. Thompson is looking forward to assisting all the students at Oak Hill as well as helping the seniors with finding their best fit for college.
New Faculty Members Mr. Alton Philyaw
Mr. Philyaw joins Oak Hill Academy as a resident manager in Ingram Dormitory. Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, he holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Winston Salem State University. He has two children, DeAnte and Alton. In his free time Mr. Philyaw enjoys outdoor sports, particularly tennis. He also likes cooking, traveling, attending sporting events, going to the beach, and trying a variety of foods. Mr. Philyaw is very happy to be a part of the OHA community and looks forward to working with his students.
Ms. Ann Brooks Ms. Brooks joins Oak Hill Academy as a resident manager in the girl’s dormitory. Originally from nearby Glade Spring, Virginia, she attended Emory and Henry College where she focused on Mass Communications. Ms. Brooks is the proud mother of Lance and has a dog Perri. Ms. Brooks really enjoys sports and her favorites include football, tennis, volleyball, and baseball. She also enjoys listening to music and spending time outdoors. Ms. Brooks is excited about being a part of OHA and to working with the girls.
Mr. Taylor Conn Mr. Taylor Conn joins Oak Hill Academy as a resident manager in Fletcher Dormitory. Originally from Tazewell, Virginia, he received a bachelor’s degree in exercise sports science from Radford University. In addition to serving in residence life Mr. Conn will also be an assistant coach with the gold basketball team. Mr. Conn is a familiar face around campus as he has been a volunteer assistant basketball coach for several years. Mr. Conn really enjoys the family atmosphere at OHA and is looking forward to a great basketball season.
Ms. Chris Tobin Ms. Tobin joins Oak Hill Academy as an English teacher. She is originally from Martinsville, Virginia, and has previously taught in Roanoke City and Culpeper County. Ms. Tobin earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Roanoke College and attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she studied creative writing. Ms. Tobin is very excited about living in this area as she likes taking long walks and kayaking. She has a cat named Sadie and in her free time enjoys reading, writing, knitting, and gardening. She has too many favorite books to name, but her current favorite writer is poet Anne Carson. Ms. Tobin is excited being a part of the Oak Hill Academy community.
Mr. Ken Hunnewell Mr. Hunnewell joins Oak Hill Academy as a science teacher. He holds an undergraduate degree in geology from Rutgers College and a graduate degree in physics education. Mr. Hunnewell worked in the construction and geotechnical industry before changing careers to teaching. He taught in the Atlanta area before coming to OHA. Mr. Hunnewell’s hobbies include astronomy, fossil hunting, art, pottery, archery, and collecting antique radios. He resides in the Atlanta area with this wife and two daughters. His oldest daughter is a freshman at the University of Georgia.

Alumni Weekend 2013 Another great Alumni Weekend was held July 13-15 with many former students and their families in attendance. This annual event is open free of charge to all alumni and former students and their families who wish to attend. The Welcome Home Reception held in the Ussery Archives Room on Friday evening kicked off the weekend. Saturday morning began with the annual alumni meeting led by OHA president Dr. Michael Groves. Class pictures, campus tours led by current students, and lunch in Vaughan Dining Hall followed. The afternoon began with a brief memorial service to pay tribute to alumni who had passed during the past year. The tolling of the campus bell and singing of the Alma Mater marked this occasion. Our summer school students then joined the group for an ice cream social. The day’s events were capped off with dinner, dancing, and a silent auction at the Mississippi Pavilion in Noonkester Park. The weekend wrapped up on Sunday morning with the Alumni Brunch at the Hough Dormitory Picnic Shelter and worship service at Young’s Chapel Baptist Church. Our goal is to make this weekend the best it can possibly be for all OHA alumni and former students and their families. If you have never attended or if its been several years since you have been to an Alumni Weekend, please join your classmates and come celebrate with us July 18-20, 2014!

$1 Per Year Campaign Update In order to get as many alumni and former students as possible involved in the mission of OHA and listed on our Alumni “Honor Roll” the “$1 Per Year Campaign” was launched in 2011. The “$1 Per Year Campaign” asks alumni and former students to give back to their Alma Mater by donating at least $1 for every year since they graduated from or attended Oak Hill Academy. Our goal for 2013-2014 is to have as many alumni as possible listed in the Alumni Giving section of the “State of the Academy Report” and on our web site. Gold Team News – 2013-2014 Season Outlook The Warriors are busy preparing for a very challenging season. In addition to 25 home games, the Warriors will be returning to the Marshall County Hoopfest in Benton, Kentucky, the Chick-fil-A Classic in Columbia, South Carolina, The Penny Hardaway Hoopfest in Memphis, Tennessee, and the Hoop Hall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts, to compete against some of the most talented teams in our nation. They also have weekend trips to Las Vegas, Nevada, and Phoenix, Arizona. Oak Hill has four seniors that are college bound to the ACC. Point guard Shelton Mitchell will sign with Wake Forest, forwards Cody and Caleb Martin are headed to NC State, and guard BJ Stith is committed to the University of Virginia. Returning senior Rokas Gustys leads a talented interior squad that will provide the Warriors with a larger inside presence this year with the addition of 6’10” sophomores Rodney Miller and Khadim Sy. Providing additional depth are junior forwards Tony Anderson and Trevor Manuel and seniors Kem Ubaru and Jeffrey Uju. Shelton Mitchell, BJ Stith and returning junior Terrence Phillips give the Warriors leadership and depth at the guard slot. Twins Cody and Caleb Martin bring additional fire power from the wing position. The 2013-14 squad hopes to continue the tradition of Oak Hill Basketball and compete for another mythical national championship.
Donor Appreciation Dinner On Saturday, November 9, 2013, Dr. and Mrs. Michael Groves will be hosting the annual Donor Appreciation Event on the campus of Oak Hill Academy. The event will begin with a performance by the Oak Hill Academy Choir with dinner following in the Ussery Archives Room. The evening will conclude in historic Turner Gymnasium watching the Warriors Gold Team play against Word of God Academy.
