President’s Paragraph Following is the text of Dr. Groves’ Convocation Address: September 1, 2014

H

ello and welcome to Oak Hill Academy. We’ve been waiting for you. Although our school has been here at this place for a very long time, some 136 years in fact, we always prepare for and start each year anew. There is something neat and clean and special about new beginnings in the fall of the year. So, I encourage all of you to embrace not only your time on the hill this year, but embrace as well this time of year. You only have one chance to get off to a good healthy start … And this is it. Let me share with you just a bit about our school and this community. We believe Oak Hill Academy to be a very special place. There are adults here who are ready and willing to work with you for hours on end, so please take advantage of the gift of their generosity. And know that these very same adults—they are going to expect you to work hard, they are going to push you to reach for new levels of success. On this first day of school, prepare yourself to expect nothing less every day for the remainder of the year. A new school or a new school year is always going to signal some level of change for you. Change is not always easy; seldom is effective change struggle-free or quick. So I encourage you, in this world of instant decision-making and rapid distribution of information … slow down, build healthy relationships, grow, be patient. The academic year is a marathon; it is not a sprint. At OHA, like all quality organizations, we have developed values that we believe should define who we are and how we live. So we believe that here at this place, you are a member of a community; we believe that here at this place you are to take responsibility for your own actions; we believe here at this place that you should aspire to exhibit moral courage; and we believe that here at this place you are capable of growing, of transformation. These are our values. Our theme for the year is TEAMWORK. You shall see and hear this term often. It’s a good, rich, vibrant word. TEAMWORK is also an expansive word, for it includes all the students who are here this year, all of our faculty and staff, and all of our graduates. Oak Hill Academy may be a small place in a remote area of the world, but we are a big, robust community. OHA stretches for generations, extending past many states, countries, and continents.

So when you hear the word “TEAMWORK” this year, take comfort, for it should suggest to you that many others have gone before you just as others are here with you right now. Though our themes of the year will change annually there are several constants here on “The Hill” … our mission, our values, our hope for each of you to reach new levels of success, and the unceasing dedication of the faculty and staff—a dedication and love that is distributed equally among you and to our school. These features are the cornerstones of OHA and shall be with us forever. And so, at this time, with an appropriate level of reverence, we pause and consider the moment at hand—the chiming of The Oak Hill Academy Bell. This bell chimes only three times per year: at Alumni Days each summer we chime it for alumni who have passed; on Graduation Eve we chime it once for each graduate; and today, we ring the bell to signal the start of a new school year. The Chiming of the Academy Bell May God bless you and may God continue to bless Oak Hill Academy. Year 136 begins right now. Follow Dr. Groves on Twitter @DrGrovesOHA

Alumni Weekend 2014

Another great Alumni Weekend was held July 18-20 with many former students and their families in attendance. This annual event is open free of charge to all alumni and former students and their families who wish to attend. The Welcome Home Reception at the Alumni Campus Store on Friday evening kicked off the weekend. Saturday morning began with the annual alumni meeting led by OHA president Dr. Michael Groves. Class pictures, campus tours led by current students, and lunch in Vaughan Dining Hall followed. The afternoon began with a brief memorial service to honor alumni who had passed during the previous year. The tolling of the school bell and singing of the Alma Mater marked this occasion. Our summer school students then joined the group for an ice cream social. The day’s events were capped off with dinner, dancing, and a silent auction at the Mississippi Pavilion in Noonkester Park. The weekend wrapped up on Sunday morning with the Alumni Brunch at the Hough Dormitory Picnic Shelter and worship service at Young’s Chapel Baptist Church. Our goal is to make this weekend the best it can possibly be for all OHA alumni and former students and their families. If you have never attended or if its been several years since you have been to an Alumni Weekend, please join your classmates and come celebrate with us July 1719, 2015!

“Over the Hill Alumni” Gang The 2014 alumni work week was again fun for all. The “Over the Hill” Gang made their way to campus for a week of work and fun. They completed their usual gardening tasks and also cleaned the white fence along the main drive. A special thanks to all of the workers, Don Krauss, Harry and Sarah (Ussery) Sink, Ted Ussery, Ann Brown, Mary and Otis Reamy, Jo Ann Watkins Harvey, and Ron and Joan Anderson. Several members of the gang could not be with us due to conflicts and they were missed. We look forward to the return of the “Over the Hill Gang” again next summer!

Become Part of the “Over the Hill Alumni” Gang A Great Way to Give Back to Your School! Attention alumni and former students – Are you willing to get a little dirty, sleep in a dorm room, eat in Vaughan Dining Hall, laugh a lot, and sweat a little? $1 Per Year Campaign Update In order to get as many alumni and former students as possible involved in the mission of OHA and listed on our Alumni “Honor Roll” the “$1 Per Year Campaign” was launched in 2011. The “$1 Per Year Campaign” asks alumni and former students to give back to their Alma Mater by donating at least $1 for every year since they graduated from or attended Oak Hill Academy. Our goal for 2014-2015 is to have as many alumni as possible listed in the Alumni Giving section of the “State of the Academy Report” and on our web site. We challenge all former students to give back to your Alma Mater in this easy and affordable way. Thank you to the following alumni and former students who made a contribution to OHA between June 1 – October 1, 2014

Oak Hill Academy First Annual Homecoming January 31, 2015 We are pleased to announce our First Annual Homecoming event to be held on campus January 31, 2015. The one-day event will occur in conjunction with the home Gold Team game against Prominence Academy. All alumni and former students are welcome to participate in the happenings of the day. Tentative plans include a campus wide homecoming parade (alumni are encouraged to be creative by making small scale floats or a themed marching group) and pregame tailgating for both alumni and current students. Oak Hill’s food service, Meriwether-Godsey, will provide main course selections. Alumni classes or groups may participate by providing a favorite tailgating staple to share. There will be reserved seating at the basketball game for all alumni and their families. All former students attending will receive a special inaugural homecoming t-shirt designed by current OHA students. Specific times and details will follow soon. Mark your calendars now and plan to join the fun January 31, 2015!

Gold Team News – 2014-2015 Season Outlook Expectations are always high as we start a new basketball season at Oak Hill Academy. This year is no exception. The 2014-15 Warriors are deep and talented. 6’7” senior Tony Anderson, 7-0” junior Rodney Miller, 5’11” senior Terrence Phillips, and 6’9” junior Khadim Sy give the Warriors four outstanding returning players from last year’s 41-4 team that finished the 2013-14 season ranked #3 nationally. New incoming seniors are 6’6” Dwayne Bacon, 6’5” Andrew Fleming, 6’10” Daniel Giddens, and 6’5” Joshua Reaves. Underclassmen newcomers are 6’7” junior Joe Hampton and 6’1” sophomore Lindell Wigginton. Together they make this Warrior team the deepest squad since the 2012 National Championship team. Coach Steve Smith is entering his 30th year as the head coach of Oak Hill. The Warriors will play teams from over a dozen different states while traveling to ten states, in addition to multiple games in Virginia, to once again take on the nation’s toughest high school schedule. The highlights of this season will be: the Marshall County Hoopfest in Benton, Kentucky; the Iolani Prep Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii; the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in Springfield, Missouri; the Nike Extravaganza in Santa Ana, California; the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island, Nebraska; and the Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts, the home of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The Warriors anticipate the start of the season on October 31. They look forward to the challenge that awaits and expect great results.
