Warrior Weekend began with a multitude of trips! Mr. Bunn and a group of students made their way to Macado’s and a soccer game at Emory & Henry College.

Shiryu Kataoka had words of joy about the food. Izrael Hayden commented, “It was eyepopping!” The crowd at Emory & Henry was loud and excited as this was their Homecoming.

The game was a huge thriller ending in a double overtime.

Altogether, everyone enjoyed each other’s company and had a great time on this trip.

Another group went to a Haunted House. The diverse group was exceptionally brave. “It was really funny seeing who you wouldn’t expect to be scared, get so fear-filled in the moment,” said Alpha

Diallo. The group enjoyed learning about each other and sharing their cultures.

Miss Smith took a group of students to Chipotle. Students enjoyed the country-side on the drive and especially loved Chipotle’s various types of healthy foods. It was a relaxing trip filled with deliciousness.

Mr. Henry and a group of students enjoyed an evening meal at Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Students on the trip said that this was probably the best place for burgers and fries.

A group of students traveled with Ms. Bronson to Bristol for dinner at Mellow Mushroom Pizza followed by dessert at Sweet Frog, a frozen yogurt shop. Students on this trip said that the

group was so diverse.

They truly enjoyed getting to know others with whom they would not have normally interacted. The evening was a great success.

Ms. Haas took a group of students to Today’s Nails in West Jefferson, North Carolina. Frankie Culhane enjoyed a pedicure while ladies on the trip delighted in manicures with a special paraffin wax treatment.

Afterwards, the group went to Taco Bell and McDonald’s for dinner.

Everyone’s nails looked fabulous!

Another group of students went bowling with Mr. Hebold. “The bowling was good, but it was great to meet new people,” said Hollis Cooner. Everyone loved the atmosphere of the bowling alley. The trip was a huge success.

Warrior Weekend—Saturday

By Khadim Sy Warrior Weekends are organized by the Oak Hill staff three times each year. On Warrior Weekend, the school staff plans many different activities on and off campus.

Mr. Henry and Mrs. Phelps took a group hiking followed by a meal at Five Guys Burgers and Fries. While the group was hiking, they saw many amazing sights.

Miles past the tree line, they saw beautiful mountain ranges as well as many interesting birds and horses. The lunch at Five Guys was great. Overall, they enjoyed their time together on a beautiful day.

There was also a trip to the Laser Tag/Arcade. Braxton Key said this day was one of his most interesting ever on ‘the Hill!’

Coach Meagher and Coach Conn brought so much fun and excitement to the trip. The best part was when they competed in Laser Tag. Braxton said, “I

am looking forward to the next Warrior Weekend later this year.”

Another trip was to see the movie, The Martian. The movie was about an astronaut stranded on Mars, and the mission to recover him before he ran out of food. Kwande Bawa said, “The movie was outstanding! It gave a moral lesson at the end about perseverance and never giving up.” After the movie, the group went to McDonald’s for dinner.

There was also a trip to the Ghost Train at Tweetsie Railroad. Ms. Bronson said they went to Chick-Fil-A for dinner and then made their way to Tweetsie. The Ghost Train was scary and the railroad was twisted. They also toured the Freaky Forest and rode carnival

rides. A good time was had by all.

There was yet another trip to the BBQ Smokehouse in Galax, Virginia. The dinner was awesome! They ate good BBQ and had fun conversations. The restaurant had a lot of pictures of famous people. Miles Preacher said the best part was talking and getting to know each other better.

Back on ‘the Hill,’ students enjoyed making s’mores in the firepit at the new amphitheater.

Heaters were set up outside for students to enjoy Karaoke as well. It was a warm finish to great day.

Warrior Weekend—Sunday

By Matt Coleman Warrior Weekend is a time that Oak Hill Academy students cherish. It is like watching the Hunger Games when it is time to sign up for activities. Students run to the cafeteria, anxious to write their name down for their favorite trips.

Sunday started with a breakfast trip to Shatley Springs, followed by trips to a movie & lunch, a Creeper Trail bike ride, Chipotle, a fast food tour, and Osaka Grill.

The first two days were a blast of excitement. To start Sunday morning, Mr. Pease and Mr. Bunn accompanied 22 students to breakfast at Shatley Springs. Matt Coleman said, “Personally, there is no breakfast better anywhere. The eggs, hotcakes, and the biscuits with apple butter were simply amazing.”

Mr. Henry and Mrs. Phelps took a group to a movie and

afterwards had lunch.

Miles Preacher said that the movie was okay, but had only good things to say about the food at lunch.

food made her even more delighted.

Looking for a biking adventure, students took to the Creeper Trail with Subway for dinner. The Creeper Trail was a 20-mile bike ride. Students say they were able to have fun, but at the same time clear their minds.

Then the dinner at Subway, made the activity even better. Bakh Pearl stated, “What’s better than Subway, where you can make your sub anyway you like it?”

Matt Coleman, along with Bryce Radford, William Rutherford, and Austin Dill, chose to find out what the fast food tour was about. Mrs. Groves steered them to Pizza Hut, Bojangles, Wendy’s, and KFC. William stated, “In my opinion, this was the best trip. The wide variety of food choices put it over the top; cheese pizza from Pizza Hut, chicken wings from Bojangles, and a cheeseburger with a lemonade from Wendy’s made my stomach feel sensational.”

That afternoon, Mr. Bunn and his group went to Chipotle.

Chipotle is known for their delicious bowls of white rice and chicken or steak, with toppings ranging from something mild to very hot, corn, cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. Olivia Obeng simply said, “Chipotle is life!” In addition, it was her birthday so the

Students really enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to seeing what the next Warrior Weekend has in store.

Open Mic Night

By Brad Tyree October 8th was the first of many Open Mic Nights on campus. Open Mic was a time for expressing one’s feelings, ideas, and beliefs. Students presented an original work or a piece of another’s work. The Campus Store transformed into a ‘Coffee House’ atmosphere to host the event. It was a great time with both music and poetry being presented. Hope Bernier sang “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac. Kenny Nwuba sang and played the guitar to the song “Photograph” by Ed Sheeran.

Will Messer, Hannah Bruck, Mason Higgs, and Brendan Cruz performed “American Girl” by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

During an interview, Mr. Julius commented, “It’s monumentally important for students to express their feelings. Reading the work of others’ forces students to engage in an act of empathy. I believe empathy is an important emotion to understand for young minds.”

Mr. Julius was pleased with the turn out. He hopes to host a future event in the amphitheater. For those who think they ‘hate’ poetry, Mr. Julius said to think of one’s favorite musician/group as those performers are really poets. He continued by saying, “Everything is poetic, and everyone has potential.” Interested in checking out some good poetry? Mr. Julius

suggested the works of Kevin Young and Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Be sure to check out the next Open Mic Night. Many students enjoyed hearing others perform.

Expressions Club: Dedicated to Spreading Art

By Tara Griffith The Expressions Club is a fun and inviting opportunity for Oak Hill students to share art among their peers. With events like Open Mic, meetings where students can read any writing of their choice, what’s not to like? The club doesn’t meet on a weekly or a monthly basis, but when they do have an event it is sure to be lots of fun! In the past, there was an open mic event

hosted in Ms. Tobin’s room. Being an attendee of this event, Tara Griffith loved sharing her own writing and listening to that of others. Students can get involved in the Expressions Club by signing up for events or talking to Ms. Tobin or Mr. Julius, the faculty sponsors.

This year the Expressions Club will be hosting many more open mic nights. The first event of this school year was on October 8th at

the campus store. The Expressions Club is always open for considering new ideas for student events. Some students who have participated in the club’s events are Tara Griffith, Franklin Diala, Hope Bernier, Braxton Key, Hannah Bruck, Will Messer, Chris Sears, and others.

Harvest Festival

By Will Watkins On Saturday, October 24th, Oak Hill Academy had its annual Harvest Festival. The students and faculty of Oak Hill Academy all rallied at Noonkester Park for the event. Meriwether-Godsey catered the dinner for the festival, and prepared a delicious meal. The dinner was a choice between a chili or stew bread bowl, with sides of hush puppies, vegetables, chips, and soda. If that wasn’t enough, students could win many baked goods such as cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other sweet treats in the “Cake Walk.” The

festival had other miscellaneous snacks like caramel Honey Crisp apples and soft pretzels, not to mention the candy that could be won at a “ball toss” game. The night was electric and a great chance for students and faculty to showcase their costumes.

Speaking of costumes, a large number of students dressed up in some pretty creative garments.

Costume judging categories were the scariest, the most creative, and the best overall. Sam Fryling took the prize for the most creative

costume. Sam dressed as an elf carrying around a mini Donald Trump. Christine Sears won the best overall costume. Christine dressed as a possessed wind-up doll. The winner of the scariest costume was Maddi Mayeaux. She dressed as Jack the Skeleton King from Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Character Stage

By Josh Mar-Fan Oak Hill Academy isn’t just any old college preparatory school, it’s a family. Teachers, staff, and students all work hard to build a welcoming community. Since students come to Oak Hill at all times of the year, it’s essential that they feel comfortable, relaxed, and ready to work. I personally came to Oak Hill half way through the first quarter, so I can honestly say I felt ‘new’ for about the first 24 hours. The hard work started from

day one and there’s nowhere to hide. With a student body of only 140 pupils, getting away with a homework deficiency was nearly impossible.

By the second week at Oak Hill, I felt like I had been here for months. I quickly adjusted to the time table and the days swiftly moved on. Sometimes at a new school, the teachers, students, and school can be a little intimidating and daunting. However, when I

came to Oak Hill, the school had a more friendly ‘vibe’ and that feeling of intimidation and being scared quickly faded away. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first arrived at Oak Hill, but I knew I wanted to make a change in my life, in basketball, and in my academics. From being at Oak Hill for just a month, I can tell that it was the right move.

Equestrian Team at Bland County Fair

By Christine Sears On September 12th, the Equestrian Team competed at the Bland County Fair. Conditions were rainy, with a near-constant downpour that caused low

visibility and muddy grounds.

Despite the weather, all four students participating in the horse show placed in their classes.

Jake Pensak placed third in the Western Go-As-You-Please on Teddy. Rachel Murphy placed first in the Western Go-As-You-Please, first in Western Pleasure, and second in the 18 and Under GoAs-You-Please on Goldie.

Christine Sears and her horse Dale, placed fifth in the 18 and Under

Go-As-You-Please, second in English Pleasure, and won the 18 and Under English Pleasure.

Sam Mussen rode Godot winning two second place ribbons in both English Pleasure classes.

All in all, the riders performed great for their first show of the year.

Equestrian Team at North Carolina State Fair

By Tamsin Smith During the weekend of October 17th, the Oak Hill Academy Equestrian team attended the North Carolina State Fair Horse Show. After leaving ‘the Hill’ on Thursday, October 15th, the students made the threeand-a-half hour drive to Raleigh.

They bedded stalls, fed the horses, and then went to bed to prepare for the big day ahead of them. While at the fair on Friday, the students washed and prepared their horses for the classes in which they would compete.

Sam Mussen was the first to show, riding Godot. He participated in Saddle Seat classes of Walk, Trot, and Canter.

He placed first in

his classes and first in the English Saddle Seat championship. Rachel Murphy riding Goldie was the next student to show that day. She participated in Western Classes of Walk, Jog, and Lope. Rachel placed third in her class and fourth in the championship. Amber Deane rode Alex for her classes. Tamsin Smith and Jake Pensak were the last to show that day.

Tamsin rode Teddy and placed second in her class and fourth in the Western championship. Jake rode Bukaroo and placed third in his class and fifth in the Western championship.

After the show was over and the trailer was packed up, students got the chance to go to the fairgrounds. They watched a beautiful firework display as well as spent time on the rides, buying souvenirs, and eating delicious fair food. Sam Mussen said that the North Carolina State Fair had some of the best fair food he had ever eaten. Overall it was an exciting weekend filled with lots of learning experiences!

Youth Group

By Lexie Stoltfus Here at Oak Hill there is an awesome youth group. The youth group is combined with the church’s youth group for the first time this year. Youth group is a very fun thing to do on Sunday nights. There is normally a Bible study, a game, and a snack. The students have fun and also learn a valuable lesson at the same time.

There are a lot of students from Oak Hill who attend including: Frankie Culhane, Austin Dill, Sam Fryling, Aaron Groves, Braxton Key, Davi Lazard, Natalie Leach, Kelly MacLean, Rodney Miller, Turner Morton, Brock Nelson, Kenny Nwuba, Lexie Stoltzfus, Morgan Rumsey, Elijah Thomas, Bree Thompson, Tsehaye Vener,

Tori Levine, Bakh Pearl and Amber Deane. The kids from the church are Lydia Absher, Emily Bunn, Erin Bunn, HJ Crede, Riley Halsey, Staten Halsey, Beth Kirk, Maggie Kirk, Scott Kirk, Cassidy Perry, Christian Perry, Kendra Phipps, Karley Phipps, Collin Young, and Garan Young.

Mrs. Groves is one of the leaders for the Youth Group.

When asked what she wants the kids to get out of youth group, she answered, “I would like the youth group to be a place where they can develop their Christian discipleship, feel more connected with the church, and have a

positive connection with people at the youth group.”

A lot of people think youth group is a wonderful activity and fun place to be. Students have a lot of fun and get to meet new people. When at home a lot of parents force their children to go to youth group or church. Here youth group is an option and most kids always choose to go. There is always a good message. Go try it out!

Art Club!

By Lindell Wigginton Art Club is one of the many exciting clubs offered at Oak Hill Academy. The club is sponsored by Ms. Luksic, and officers are Brendan Cruz, Chris Sears, and Quinn Arrowood. The Art Club started the year off with an exciting tie-dye event.

Students got to tie-dye socks, t-shirts, and pillow cases. The club is meant to offer different arts and crafts to students who never really get the chance outside of school.

Art Club meets two times a week in the art room. Some activities Art Club has done in the past include tiedye, painting, Christmas ornaments, and clay objects. Ms. Luksic said, “Students can come to any meeting or event all students are welcome.”

Members of the Art Club have planned upcoming events that are very dynamic. Students are looking forward to another tie-dye event, a spray painting project, and making decorations for the Harvest Festival.

Leadership: Individuals Behind the Scenes

By Kwande Bawa According to Webster’s Dictionary, the word “leadership” means the power or ability to lead other people. The Oak Hill Academy leadership group not only embodies what this term means, but also builds students into responsible and cooperative leaders. The group is run by the Director of Student Affairs, Henry Crede, and also the Director of Admission, Mike Rodgers. The program was established about six years ago

by Mr. Henry Crede and OHA students. The group was created to promote responsibility among the students, to help them grow as individuals, and also to encourage students to function in leadership roles, both in the real world and on campus.

Approximately, 30 students are in leadership this year.

These include Bakh Pearl, Ming Ogden, Hollis Cooner, Alice Wang, Matthew Bryan, Christine Sears, Sallie Jones, Morgan Rumsey, Tara Griffith, Tori Levine, Huiqi Chen, Tamsin Smith, Samantha Kibble, Kelly MacLean, Turner Morton, Aaron Groves, Frankie Culhane, Abby Blair, Natalie Leach, Kane Schrader, Sam Fryling, Kristina Kennedy, Jingyi Cai, Quinn Arrowood, Stephen Wang, Bushe Ramabu, Kwande Bawa, Brendan Cruz, Brian Zhang, and Davi

Lazard. This particular group of students has accepted the responsibility of being leaders on the school campus. Each of these individuals has a role to play. The staff leaders of the group, Henry Crede and Mike Rodgers, require an application essay in order for one to get a leadership position on campus. The essay entails what position a students thinks he or she is best fit to fulfill, special skills , and ideas the student has for the position. Available positions include Saturday night social coordinator, dorm assistant, ambassador , etc.

The group has made an outstanding impact over the past years. “Each year, a new set of kids joins the group, and makes it become more productive and fruitful for the Oak Hill community,” said Mr. H. Crede.

The two leaders of the group both portray the equality that two leaders can have, even with power and influence being involved.

They do this by lecturing the students on every aspect of being a leader. They also split the lecturing time in weekly schedules in order for the members to have a variety of information.

Every Sunday evening, the leadership group has a meeting in the Archives room of the school. In these meetings, they talk about the characteristics of a leader and the qualities a good leader should have. Mr. Rodgers said, “Together we set the agenda and take turns giving presentations and leading the discussions for our regular meetings. It is clear that members are being inspired and prepared to do practical things to make Oak Hill Academy a better place.” The students also share any ideas or contributions they have towards helping the group and the school as a whole. Mr. Crede said, “I am really happy to see so many students involved with the program. The program helps change the students and the school in a positive manner.”

The main idea of the leadership group on “the Hill” is to assist the students in maximizing their full potential.

The leadership group has just begun their quest to make the school and community a better place. The community hopes to see their impact in a positive and large manner.

Chinese Club

By Abby Osho The Chinese Club is all about helping non- Chinese speakers to learn and understand the language. Chinese Club members learn Chinese by having lessons, listening to audio tapes, and learning how to write characters.

They have meetings twice a week, plan to make lanterns and

dumplings, and host other cultural events.

There are thirteen students in the Chinese Club which is sponsored by Mr. Landow.

President of the club is Natalie Zhang, Vice-President is Quinn Arrowood, and Secretary is Ming Ogden. The other members include Walter Huang, Toma Huang, Nahum Belayhun, Bello

Razgallah, Amanda Crenshaw, Drew Nixon, Franklin Diala, Carrittah Cai, and Brian Zhang.

Internationals Abound

By Josh Hatch The International Club at OHA is sponsored by a former international! Mr. Hill attended Oak Hill as an international student after living all over the world. He believes he can get closer with these students by having a club that makes them feel closer to home.

Mr. Hill established the club in 2012.

The International Club takes trips off-campus to restaurants and shopping malls. Students enjoy the opportunity to get necessary items as well as spend time socializing

and absorbing American culture.

Their favorite trips are to Walmart. This year, the club includes students from many different countries. Sam Ballard, Nathan Berhanu, Jennifer Brewer, Carritah Cai, Sandy Chen, Massa Fazzi, Mark Fu, Mason Higgs, Mutsukou Hiyoshi, Guobin Huang, Yuehao Huang, Shiryu Kataoka, Paul Inamala, Lotam Leinzon, Markus Malleschitz, Josh Mar-Fan, Kenny Nwuba, Bushe Ramabu, Shawn Roache, Alpha Diallo, Jason

Shi, Khadim Sy, Tomas Syrovatko, Steven Wang, Shaolong Wang, Alice Wang, Lindell Wigginton, Brian Wu, and Kane Schrader make up this unique group.

Knitting Friends

By Davi Lazard Knitting Club focuses on teaching members how to knit, as well as giving members a time and place to knit together.

As their knitting skills improve, members make hats and scarves.

Quinn Arrowood said, “Knitting is an important skill that I’d like to learn and be able to pass on.”

Once the club begins fully, there will be meetings two-three times a month after school. Students can get involved by signing up

with Ms. Tobin or Quinn Arrowood. During the meetings, students can connect with each other, while relaxing and having fun.

Last year, Knitting Club members focused on learning how to knit or use a loom, which they will continue this year. They would like to make “Caps For Kids,” which Young’s Chapel Baptist Church sponsors. Like last

year, they also plan to take a trip to the Alpaca Farm near Galax where the club saw how one family is raising Alpacas for locally sourced yarn. Ms. Tobin sponsors the Knitting Club.

Members include Quinn Arrowood, Abby Blair, Brendan Cruz, Tsehaye Vener, Natalie Zhang, and Ms. Luksic. Enjoy being a part of Knitting Club by coming out for their next gathering!

Spanish Club

By Alpha Diallo Spanish Club helps students at OHA have an understanding of the Spanish and Latino culture. Spanish Club is sponsored by Miss Guarino.

The president is Tori Levine, vice president is Tamsin Smith, secretary is Natalie Leach, publicist is Sam Fryling and treasurer is Morgan Rumsey.

Spanish Club includes students who are willing to learn and understand Spanish. Spanish Club members include Kane Schrader, Frankie Culhane, Abby Blair, Bello Razgallah, Tara Griffith, Christen Reeves, Jackson Ritter, Austin Dill, Natalie Zhang, Ming Ogden, Nahum Belayhun, Jonathan Harris, Chris Sears, Massa Fazzi, Matthew Bryan, Elijah

Thomas, Jennifer Brewer, Huiqi Chen, Shunwei Shi, Drew Nixon, Alex Kulp, Lindell Wigginton, and Alice Wang.

Spanish Club’s focus is to promote diversity in the Spanish and Latino culture. The group participates in Spanish celebrations with music and food.

One recent celebration was “The Day of the Dead,” which is a celebration focused on memories of family members who have passed away. The club also enjoys Spanish music and dances. They especially like Zumba. Members plan to cook Spanish food for all to enjoy giving a bigger view of Spanish and Latino nutrition.

They improve their Spanish skills by hosting conversation circles.

Spanish Club’s goals are to show students how Spanish and Latino culture is different from their own culture. Members eat Spanish food, speak Spanish, celebrate Spanish events, and listen and dance to Spanish music. All these elements help students to understand Spanish culture.

Let’s Go For a Run!

By Davi Lazard Trail Running Club members take advantage of our surroundings by running trails on and off campus. They try to run three times a week, some days in the morning and other days in the afternoon. They run from three to five miles a day. Mr. Rodgers said, “We even run in the dark.

This is supposed to be fun, not an obligation.”

The group recently went to Roanoke to participate in a 5k race for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia. There were many people from different areas participating in the race. Mr. Rodgers said, “ It was a great introduction for our kids participating in Running Club. We

don’t compete with other schools. This should be enjoyable. The runners are competing with themselves.”

Focusing on building up their confidence to run, they can push themselves to be further motivated. Students could possibly make running a part of their daily life.

The club plans to run several 5k races and will do longer distances second semester. They hope to participate in the half marathon at Grayson Highlands State Park later this year.

Samantha Kibble, Chris Evans, Steven Wang, Mark Fu, and Turner Morton enjoy running with Mr. Rodgers regularly.

Gospel Quartet—Wows YCBC

There are three to five other members who run when their schedules allow.

Trail Running Club will host a 5k race and one-mile fun run for all students and alumni during homecoming weekend.

Students can get involved in Trail Running by going to Mr. Rodgers or asking someone in the club when they are running.

The Mission of Oak Hill Academy

Oak Hill Academy is a coeducational, Baptist affiliated, boarding/day school committed to excellence in education and adolescent development in a non-military setting. The mission of Oak Hill Academy is to offer a safe, secure, nurturing environment for girls and boys needing a change in school, peer, community, or family relationships.

Oak Hill provides a structured college-preparatory program to students in grades 8-12. Our curriculum challenges the brightest student and encourages those who are unmotivated, who are underachieving, or who are experiencing difficulties in their school setting.
