On June 15th Coach Monica, Coach Amanda, and Coach Erica drove three vans filled with 20 high school goggles players to participate in five games at the Lake Tahoe Summit Classic. In the spring, these players expressed wanting to step up their lacrosse skills so OLC responded by creating the firstever All-City Travel Team.

Any of the 84 players from Castlemont, McClymonds, Oakland High, Oakland Tech, and Skyline have the opportunity to earn a spot on this team but only 20 will be selected per tournament. Roster eligibility is based upon attendance, leadership, coachability, and the display of OLC values from the OAL season.

“I felt like I really made some good friends and got to connect with some amazing people. Overall, it was a great experience and I loved every part of it.”

SUMMER FINANCIAL LITERACY WORKSHOP WITH ELISHA DAVIS

On Wednesday, July 19th, our Summer Ambassadors were invited to the OLC Office to explore professional development skills with Elisha Davis. In this space, our 10 Summer Ambassadors were asked to envision their futures through dream boards. Together, they calculated how everyday decisions play a role in investing into yourself.

What better time to build healthy spending habits than your first job? Financial wellness means knowing how to manage your money to balance current needs in alignment with future goals. Small actions can lead to lasting impact and real-life scenarios led to food for thought—an example being how what you spend today on takeout food can affect how and when you finance a car. Overall, our youth felt empowered to ask questions, having them from this session with a stronger sense of confidence and control.

The Summer Ambassadors Program has evolved and built upon feedback from previous years. This year we set a new record—17 Summer Ambassadors (SAs) provided sessions as 3 AIM High and 17 Oakland Parks, Rec & Youth Development sites.

Of the 25 young leaders, about 40% were new to this job opportunity while three SAs have worked in this since its original launch. As our youth continue to return to this program, their agency naturally follows; the three college-aged SAs can choose to lead a site on their own or continue to team up when coaching. All SAs are incentivized to return the following summer with a pay increase. They are also paid to attend a variety of professional development workshops—such as 'Financial Literacy with Elisha Davis. We can't wait to see what this program turns into next year!

On Wednesday, June 28th, Coach Brandon and three of our high school players flew down to San Diego to watch the World Lacrosse Games. This event happens once every four years and coming from a professional lacrosse background, Coach Brandon knew that seeing the bigger lacrosse community in action would inspire some players to work and achieve a new level of intensity. Cesar, Jeremiah, and Noah are three humble high school leaders who deserved this opportunity more than anyone. These players show up ready to put in the work and always trying to improve themselves as well as their teammates. They were selected to go on this trip in recognition of their consistent attendance, leadership, coachability, and the display of OLC values from their spring season.

This was a trip of many firsts; it was the first time OLC sent players with a coordinator to the World Games, the first SDSU visit in OLC History, Jeremiah's first time on a plane, and all three players' first time traveling together on an overnight trip. They watched lacrosse, ate many meals, met players representing various countries, and enjoyed several tourist attractions. Stay tuned for mo fi d i

On Tuesday, August 1st, 10 years worth of OLC players, families, friends, and supporters gathered at Laney College home field. As always, we smiled as we shared food, laughed while playing games, and felt right at home with so many new and returning faces.

There's much appreciation to go around. Two claps for Abel and his crew for preparing the food, Coach Hayden for being the first one in dunk tank, OLC Program Staff for organizing the event, those who attended, and everyone who has given their unconditional love and support towards our mission over the past ten years!

Our seniors are freshmen again. We are so proud of your accomplishments and cannot wait to see what your futures hold. Here's where some of them are going to be this fall:
