Oakland Lacrosse Club’s Founder and Executive Director Dear supporters, With a real sense of pride, a bit of awe, and an immense amount of gratitude, we celebrate 10 years of breaking down barriers and growing our community. For 10 years, we have made it our goal to provide Oakland youth with access to sports, opening up doors to crucial opportunities as they transition to young adulthood. For 10 years, we have worked with Oakland schools to create programs and share resources so that every kid who wants to play lacrosse is able to without worry, without judgment, without fear. We have seen how lacrosse unleashes a confidence in our players that ripples outward, positively impacting not only themselves but their families and their communities. For 10 years, we have developed relationships amongst players, families, teachers, and community partners who embody a profound dedication to the holistic empowerment of Oakland youth—ultimately reaffirming that they can do and achieve anything they set their minds to. This is the power of our community. This year alone, has been one marked by tremendous growth and monumental firsts. We expanded our Leading with the Girls Initiative by adding a fifth team at McClymonds High School and creating our first yearround travel team. We also witnessed the first-ever Oakland Athletic League (OAL) Girls Varsity Championship Game—continually breaking the mold and forging new pathways for others.

Building from the momentum of previous seasons, OLC’s Summer Ambassadors and T.A.G. Programs became more tailored for our returning players. These opt-in opportunities provided spaces for players to hone in on their skill sets and further their leadership skills. This individualized attention occurred naturally due to the support and dedication of our staff members. To keep up with program growth, we added five new positions which all brought new energy and talent to our programs across the city. We hold nothing but gratitude and appreciation as we reflect on our 10 years. Most importantly to our players, who work towards becoming the best versions of themselves by continuing our program each year. We are grateful to our staff and coaches who devote their time and believe in our young people. We are grateful to our families and program partners. We are grateful for our board’s dedication to meeting our mission, and our supporters for investing and joining our efforts to break and dismantle barriers for Oakland youth to rise to fulfill their greatest potential. In gratitude,
Kevin Kelley Founder & Executive Director Oakland Lacrosse Club

ALUMNI VOICES: CELEBTRATING 10 YEARS & GROWING OUR ROOTS In 2013 Oakland Lacrosse Club began with just two teams. Now, in 2023, our program has over 200 active youth participants playing across 13 teams. OLC used the ten-year celebration as a way of connecting with alumni to hear what they had to say about the power of our program:
“ It’s so funny because anyone can be a Lacrosse player. You will look at someone and be like ‘oh they have a basketball build or a football build.’ You can be any shape and play Lacrosse. If you want to play Lacrosse you are welcome to play and if you don’t want to play Lacrosse that’s fine we will still welcome you in. We take everyone from anything no matter where they come from or what situation they have, good, bad, negative. We want them to be a part of our family and at the same time they want to be a part of our family.” — DY L A N , O LC T R A I L B L A Z E R

LEADING WITH GIRLS INITIATIVE To learn how to navigate systems, youth need people who believe in them as well as opportunities to level up. By continuing to build girls varsity programs at Oakland High Schools, more young student-athletes have access to OLC’s powerful network of resources—including coaches, mentors, college counselors, and wellness education. Our program nurtures the growth of each of our players, fosters life-long bonds, and deepens both individual and collective identities. This year, we saw our players celebrate monumental wins, soaring past familiar boundaries and exploring new heights. On May 20, 2023, players from Skyline High School and Oakland Technical High School competed in the first-ever Oakland Athletic League (OAL) Girls Varsity Championship Game. Hosted at McClymonds High School, the day was full of energy as 200 folks—families, friends, and OLC supporters—gathered to witness this history in the making. We give two claps to not only this year’s champions at Skyline High School, but to all the players from Oakland Technical High School, Oakland High School, Castlemont High School, and McClymonds High School who played with heart and commitment this season.
“ When I joined all the girls and coaches were so welcoming, encouraging, energetic and uplifting... It impacted me in the best way possible because I feel as though since I have joined the lacrosse team, my communication skills, confidence and mental health have improved more than ever and I couldn’t be more thankful for that!” — DA H L I A , OA K L A N D H I G H ‘26

“ I felt like I really made some good friends and got to connect with some amazing people. Overall, it was a great experience and I loved every part of it.” — KO M O G O DJ E B.
In early spring, players advocated for themselves and their communities in bold and meaningful ways. As participants in the Alliance For Girls #IGNITEtheCapitol2023 event, Oakland Lacrosse middle school goggle players were able to take their voices to Sacramento, listen to Senator Caroline Menjivar’s story, witness a proposal on the assembly floor and explore the Capitol building. We give thanks to Alliance For Girls for this incredible opportunity introducing our youth to the power of advocacy and policymaking. In order to support the continued growth and advancement of our players, Oakland Lacrosse Club created the first-ever All-City Travel Team by inviting players from all five varsity teams to rise to the occasion. In June 2023, Coach Monica, Coach Amanda, and Coach Erica drove three vans filled with 20 high school goggles players to participate in five games at the Lake Tahoe Summit Classic. This was the first of many and the team will continue throughout the Summer, Fall, and Winter. Come Spring, these players will be able to return to their respective school teams—serving as confident leaders, continuing to build camaraderie, and elevating the league’s level of play.

“ My experience at Tahoe was AMAZING. Things that stood out to me were the team bonding, improving on our skills, and simply just being around people with an uplifting energy! Although time did go by very fast, it was a time of my life and a highlight of the summer.” — N I R A L I B. 11
ACADEMIC PROGRAM Academic support is fundamental to our mission. We work to create and implement programs that address the educational needs and concerns of our youth and families. In Fall 2022, Oakland Lacrosse adapted LaxFit to become the Time Management, Advocacy, and Goal-Setting (T.A.G.) program for returning players. Each T.A.G. participant engaged in weekly 1-on-1 remote mentee checkins, in-person age-based lacrosse sessions, and fall clinics. Throughout the program, OLC provided youth with a framework for setting goals, collaborated on making individualized action plans to reach those goals, then encouraged them along the way as they made strides and ran into obstacles. The 35 participants were encouraged to make a goal in each of the four pillars pertaining to this 10-week program: Wellness, Academics, Lacrosse, and Leadership. Not only did the players come from all 10 Spring 2022 teams, but the 10 mentors consisted of coaches from U12, U14, and high school teams. Adrian Bjune, Erin Stevenson, Sam Stowe, Tracy Dearman, and Victoria Chao deserve big recognition for their commitment to serving as mentors for our youth and working with OLC Staff during the off-season. Our partnership with Every Student Matters (ESM) provides critical academic support for high school players. This includes subject specific academic support and college counseling. ESM provides one-on-one college counseling to our juniors, seniors, and community college students looking to transfer into the state and UC system. The support includes identifying colleges, creating an application strategy, hands-on essay coaching, identifying scholarships and financial aid support.
“ Giving young people ownership over their experience is one of the best ways to ensure that the program will actually meet their unique needs. Kudos to Oakland Lacrosse for providing so many amazing opportunities for their young people.” — M EGA N BA RT L ET T FO U N D E R O F C E N T E R FO R H E A L I N G & J U ST I C E T H RO U G H S P O RT

SUMMER AMBASSADORS Our high schoolers work to become inspirational players as well as experienced leaders. Our Summer Ambassadors Program asks them to coach lacrosse, plan lessons, and build community with summer campers from grades K-5. Many returning high school players applied for paid work opportunity through the fourth year of our Summer Ambassadors Program. Once hired and onboarded, they were trained by OLC Staff to learn a sports-based youth development approach. This year, 17 Summer Ambassadors (SAs) provided sessions at 3 AIM High and 17 Oakland Parks, Recreation and Youth Development sites. In total our SAs served over 500 youth from Oakland. Of the 17 young leaders, about 40% were new to this job opportunity while three have continued to come back since 2021. Summer Ambassadors spent much time at the sites, but also had chances to come into our home office for various workshops. The most popular one was an interactive financial literacy workshop facilitated by Elisha Davis—an East Oakland native, author, consultant, and speaker. Through vision-boarding and engaging in honest conversations on budgeting and spending, Elisha explored the meaning of financial wellness and how to build and sustain healthy spending habits with OLC Summer Ambassadors. We are profoundly grateful for the dedication, commitment and energy that our young leaders have so generously shared with the Oakland community. We can’t wait to see what this program turns into next year!

OVER YOUTH SERVED
COMMUNITY HEALING & HEALTHY HABITS Consistent access to holistic support, wellness, and spaces for transparent dialogue is crucial to strengthing confidence and agency amongst youth. This spring Oakland Lacrosse collaborated with the Center for Healing and Social Justice Through Sport (CHJS), an organization that believes that sports are uniquely situated to support healing, build resilience, and address issues of systemic injustice as a way to help kids heal and thrive. Their community of sports experts, strategists, and data analysts helped us to revise OLC’s theory of change—resulting in a clearer understanding of the short-term goals and long-term impact of our program. By these new measures, we defined the interpersonal outcomes we hope for every player to experience: feeling a sense of belonging, identifying supportive relationships, and exerting self-efficacy. These areas underscore the heart of who we are and the life-long skills and community that come with being a part of a team. Over a series of workshops facilitated by Shanta Loeckner, founder of 75/25 Impact, OLC Staff explored the foundations of anti-racism in education and athletics. The conversations explored many topics; from discussing critical empathy to unpacking racialized myths in sports, the workshops provided collaborative opportunities for critical thinking and how to practice anti-racism through interpersonal, structural, and systemic lenses. Healing in community and fortifying healthy habits continued to be a theme for us this year. During the Spring, our players explored the importance of mental wellness and health in the “Mental Health as an Athlete” workshop facilitated by Marshai Iverson, M.S, L.M.F.T, and Mental Performance Coach. As a former Division I athlete, Marshai was able to share best practices for managing stress, strengthening mental fortitude and resilience with OLC players. Taking a holistic approach and rooted in the belief that “wellness is only one facet of a healthy lifestyle,” Marshai encouraged Oakland Lacrosse youth to investigate the relationship between their thoughts, feelings and behaviors to better embrace their various identities and modes of self-expression.

PROGRAM EVENTS Skills developed through sports are skills used for life. Through lacrosse, you learn how to win and how to lose. You’re taught that when you fall back down, you can get back up and even if you can’t do it on your own, you have teammates who can help you. Most importantly, you learn that your hard work will not only lead to more opportunities, but your discipline may inspire others along the way. Here are some program events where OLC players connected with the larger lacrosse community: PLL-PLAYER, ROMAR DENNIS, COMES TO OAKLAND: Oakland Lacrosse had a fantastic year hosting events and practices at Elmhurst United Middle School! Our Fall Ball clinics served 60 youth this year, giving students from grades 6-12 with no previous lacrosse experience a chance to learn and play the sport for the first time. We were thrilled to have Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) Atlas player, Romar Dennis, join us for our final Fall Ball Clinic, providing individualized coaching for our players and tips on how to improve their shooting form. USA LACROSSE’S SANKOFA CLINIC: It is critical that we center inclusivity in our work and provide access to coaches and professionals in the sport who reflect the youth and communities we serve. This past Fall, USA Lacrosse and the Sankofa Lacrosse Foundation hosted 1, free 2-hour instructional clinics led by lacrosse players of color for OLC players. For many of our youth, this was the first time they met athletes of color who played beyond high school. CAL vs. HOWARD WOMEN’s LACROSSE GAME: In March OLC shuttled players to the NCAA-Division 1 Cal vs. Howard game. Although Howard did not win, it was a huge victory for OLC as we watched OLC alumna, Téa Vasquez ‘26 play. After the game, players had a meet-and-greet with players from both teams. It was a heartwarming moment and a chance for our young players to get a glimpse into what future lacrosse opportunities could look like.

KEY PARTNERSHIPS Our work is made possible with the support of our key partners who work hard to ensure that Oakland youth and families have access to lacrosse. With gratitude, we want to shout out a few key partners who continue to help us break barriers and give Oakland kids new opportunities to reach their potential on and off the field. Oakland Unified School District For 10 years, we have been the only organization working directly with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) to offer lacrosse at no cost to families. This year we partnered with 8 middle schools and 5 high schools to provide lacrosse programming, academic counseling, leadership development, and wellness support. We give a special shout out to Elmhurst United Middle School for allowing us to expand to East Oakland, host clinics, and launch two U12 teams. Oakland Athletic League Our partnership with the Oakland Athletic League (OAL) began in 2017 with the critical expansion of lacrosse, particularly widening access to lacrosse for girls in OUSD. Now, we have five varsity teams competing against one another and even held history’s first OAL Girls Varsity Championship Game. What’s more, OLC continues to deepen its partnership with the OAL by using this model to build an OAL middle school league in spring 2024. Aim High & City of Oakland Parks, Recreation, & Youth Development Every summer we collaborate with Aim High and the City of Oakland Parks, Recreation, and Youth Development (OPRYD) to provide lacrosse lessons to beginners for younger students. This collaboration widens the gives our ambassadors space to work, introduces the sport to kids of all ages, and bridges Oakland youth to make natural connections with one another. Laney College We are incredibly grateful for our longstanding relationship with Laney College. Thank you for allowing us to host major Oakland Lacrosse events throughout the year—such as our annual Alumni Day, fall clinics, the end-of-season potluck, and the annual 4v4 Jamboree. Most importantly, thank you for providing an open and welcoming space for our families, youth and community to come together.

OAKLAND LACROSSE PARTNERS WITH STEPHEN AND AYESHA CURRY’S EAT. LEARN. PLAY. FOUNDATION
Founded by Stephen and Ayesha Curry, Eat. Learn. Play. understands the importance of supporting children’s wellbeing through access to nutritious meals, reading resources and opportunities to be active. Our partnership with the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation helps us to widen our reach, bringing lacrosse directly to Oakland Public Schools to youth who may not otherwise have the chance to play the sport. Eat. Learn. Play. has invested in our middle school outreach program, bringing introductory P.E. and after-school clinics to 8 middle schools exposing the sport to over 2500 middle school youth. What’s more, Eat. Learn. Play. has also supported our Summer Ambassador Program and our commitment to ensuring that our youth have access to leadership development and spaces to show up as confident leaders, coaches and mentors. The Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation’s support serves as a vital part in both helping to expand our program and deepen the resources we are able to provide to our partner schools throughout Oakland. We are thrilled to continue this partnership next year as we work to expand our middle school offerings.
