The past two years have had many challenges and incredible triumphs for our community. In 2020, schools went remote, organizations lost support, and families moved. However, beginning in 2021, we went to work to figure out how to navigate a world forever changed by COVID. With an emphasis on reestablishing social networks and restoring a sense of physical and emotional safety, we started to bring back inperson practices and games. We doubled down on our commitment to OLC and to each other and proved that individually, each of our students, family members, and staff are resilient enough to meet the moment.
But together, we surpassed even our own goals for Oakland Lacrosse Club. We returned to OUSD campuses after 18 months of remote learning, we expanded our Leading with Girls Initiative, we increased our number of OLC teams from six to ten, and we expanded leadership opportunities through our Summer Ambassadors program and Youth Leadership Board. These are just a few of our ‘wins,’ and they were possible because we grew our organization and strengthened existing partnerships. In addition to recruiting the players, finding the coaches, securing the uniforms and equipment, and lining the fields, we also grew our organizational budget by 68%. We invested much of that into growing our team—from July 2021 to June 2022, we hired 6 new staff members.
Lacrosse is more than just a game for us; we know that when Oakland Unified School District students have access to the sport, it opens up a network of resources and new worlds for them. They become more confident in themselves and more focused on their futures. They form critical relationships that can change the trajectory of their lives. They experience joy and safety on and off the field. And they experience the kind of holistic support that lasts long beyond a season of games.
This annual report will recount some of our proudest moments from the 2021-2022 program year, highlight student voices, and hopefully, remind you of why this program is so important to so many students and families.
In gratitude,
Kevin Kelley Founder & Executive Director Oakland Lacrosse ClubMore than 2,200 youth exposed to lacrosse in grades 3-12

The growth of Oakland Lacrosse’s girls leagues is critical to our mission of providing equitable opportunities in the sport. We made a huge step in that direction in the spring of 2021 when we partnered with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and the Oakland Athletic League (OAL) to become the only nonprofit in the country to build an entire girls varsity lacrosse league within a public school district.
This past year, under the leadership of Oakland Technical High School alum and OLC Girls High School Program Manager Monica Branch, we expanded the league from three to four teams with a new girls varsity program at Castlemont High School. The Castlemont team joins our teams at Oakland High, Oakland Tech, and Skyline High Schools in having the same access to interscholastic networking, academic counseling, leadership opportunities, and wellness education that we provide to all OLC players. In total, we had over 80 varsity athletes participate in the OAL Lacrosse League. We also continue to expand the girls lacrosse program in OUSD middle schools to strengthen the pipeline into these high school girls teams. In the spring 2023 season, Oakland Lacrosse will add another girls team based at McClymonds High School.
“ My teammates, those are my sisters for life. I get to recreate this for other young women. A lot of my job is building relationships. Lacrosse gave me relationships, helped me grow and be a more well-rounded person. I’m quite literally recreating that experience for other people here in Oakland.”

Academic advocacy is a key component of our mission and programming, and we work with educational partners to make sure OLC members can prepare for and explore their options for education after graduation.
Last year, our academic coaches from Every Student Matters provided over 150 hours of college counseling for 15 OLC members, helping them set individual goals for their coursework and following up with them throughout the school year to help them succeed. In November, Laney College Dean of Enrollment Mildred Lewis and Recruitment, Assessment, and School Relations Specialist Minerva Perez gave a presentation to our high school club members about academic pathways into and through college, including dual enrollment and community college as a path to four-year schools. And some of those parents of OLC high schoolers paid it forward by advising rising freshmen about the OUSD open enrollment process.
100% of Oakland Lacrosse Club seniors graduate high school, and more than 90% of them go on to enroll in two-year and four-year postsecondary education programs. This year, our graduating seniors racked up an impressive list of college and university acceptances from places like San Francisco State, Berkeley City College, Foothill College, Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal State Northridge, University of Oregon, Syracuse, Howard, Georgetown, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and University of Hawaii.
“ When I looked at her college admissions essays, Oakland Lacrosse flowed through all of them. In every single section she mentioned something she learned through Oakland Lacrosse.”

In December 2021, we held our first Oakland Lacrosse Club Jamboree at Laney College. Our Jamboree Council, a group of 15 passionate Bay Area high school lacrosse players from OLC and surrounding high schools and club programs, organized the festival.
The event drew 24 teams and over 170 players Players across different teams got the chance to get to know each other, and the Oakland community got to learn about and support our program. Special guests from the Cal Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse teams ran a clinic for our boys’ and girls teams, and retired Premier Lacrosse League player Joe Walters joined to give our boys’ teams a few tips. We were excited to receive sponsorship from Gatorade for the event.
The big names drew excitement from students and families, but the highlight of the Jamboree was a round-robin tournament in which players from different teams grouped together to make new teams for the Jamboree. Because they were playing with students from other schools, it was a great chance to connect players passionate about lacrosse from across the Bay Area and make new friends.
The Jamboree will be an annual event to raise funds for Oakland Lacrosse Club.
“ I just appreciate the Oakland Lacrosse Club’s approach to this event and how it bridges the Bay Area Lacrosse Community”

We were able to expand our program last year because of the incredible outreach that our staff did across OUSD. In total, we served 13 OUSD schools, with students from an additional 7 schools finding their way to our program through word of mouth.
Between after-school programming and PE classes, OLC served more than 2,200 students. None of this work would have been possible without the deep partnership we have built with OUSD, which embraced our work on their school sites, introduced us to staff, and gave us time and space to reach out to as many students as possible.
“
I really want to do something for my mental health, so I joined lacrosse, picked up a stick, and I just got to learn the sport. The thing that really connected me with it was the chance to build my strength and learn mentally, physically how it is to be on a team.”

OLC’s Summer Ambassadors program is a key leadership development opportunity for our high school club members. Every summer, we collaborate with Aim High and the City of Oakland Parks, Recreation and Youth Development to provide lacrosse lessons to beginners for younger students.
Ambassadors, who are participants from our spring teams, are hired and trained in youth development with a focus on team sports, and then they mentor younger students, giving both groups an opportunity for physical activity, peer-to-peer interaction, and skill building during the summer months.
In June of 2022, we hired 21 Summer Ambassadors to coach at 3 Aim High sites and 18 Parks and Recreation sites. This year, we made a number of improvements across Summer Ambassador sites. For example, implementing weekly check-ins helped leaders better manage the turnover of kids at each site from week to week, and we created new leadership opportunities for Ambassadors based on tiers of responsibility. We also streamlined scheduling so that we could serve more camps, and more kids on more days. In total our 21 Summer Ambassadors served over 300 youth from Oakland.
“ It was a new experience for me and a pretty fun first job… I got to spread the knowledge and history of lacrosse I also learned patience and time management.”
— MASON G. SOPHOMORE OAKLAND LACROSSE SUMMER AMBASSADOR
Every year, our Youth Leadership Board hosts an OLC Alumni Day at Laney College. One of our largest annual events, this year we had around 150 visitors who enjoyed a lacrosse-shot pinata and catering from El Paisa Tacos. The day also featured a powderpuff game in which teams swapped lacrosse sticks and the start of a new tradition—a coaches vs. players game that showcased the skills players learned last year.
“ I love that OLC is a lifelong community. Once you’re in, your in.”

This generous investment from Eat. Learn. Play will increase Oakland youths’ access to healthy physical activity by enhancing OLC’s enrichment programming and footprint in the Bay Area. Specifically, the investment will support Oakland Lacrosse in expanding our Summer Ambassador programing and our fall outreach program from eight middle schools to 13. Vice President of Eat. Learn. Play. Jose Corona expressed excitement to forge this new partnership with OLC, noting, “By supporting their programming, we are getting more kids exposed to the game of lacrosse while also building their leadership skills—It’s great to partner with an organization that shares our commitment to bringing the joy of sports and physical activity to youth in Oakland.”

In 2022-2023 Oakland Lacrosse will celebrate ten years of breaking down barriers for Oakland youth. Below is a timeline sharing the organization’s history:
2012
Led by founder and current Executive Director Kevin Kelley, a group of local passionate lacrosse coaches and families from the Oakland Unified School District incorporate Oakland Lacrosse as a 501(c)(3) designed to expand the sport of lacrosse across Oakland Public Schools.
2013
OLC launches the middle School program based at Laney College, serving 40 players between one boys team and one girls team.
2014
Partnering with Up2US Sports, OLC implements a trauma-informed, sports based-youth development approach, creating a holistic model including Leadership Development, Academic Counseling, and Wellness Education.
2017
OLC implements an in-depth strategic plan surveying our players, families, and community partners, resulting in expansion of the middle school program, growing from two teams to four teams, serving over 100 middle school youth.
Addressing our community’s request for more high school playing opportunities, Oakland Lacrosse expands our holistic model by expanding our program services to Oakland Tech High School boys and girls teams and building a club girls program at Oakland High. Additionally, OLC launches the Summer Ambassador program in partnership with Aim High and Oakland Parks and Recreation.
In partnership with the Oakland Athletic League and the Oakland Unified School District to address Title IX challenges, Oakland Lacrosse launches the Leading with Girls Initiative to build an eight-team Girls Varsity High School Lacrosse.
This spring, Oakland Lacrosse will serve 250 6th- to 12th-graders on 13 teams.
“I didn’t speak much before Oakland Lacrosse. I was just quiet all the time...I was too shy to speak. So I started going with lacrosse and, hello: You can never shut me up. When I say they really gave me my voice, they really did.”
