Skills for Working Life – Land and Plants City & Guilds L1 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills

Level Full Time E3 1 Year St Albans Full Time 1 Year St Albans

This course provides a great introduction to the horticulture industry as well as building on your personal and social development and preparation for work.

What do I need? No entry qualifications, other than a willingness to learn.

What will I learn? l Recognise parts of plants l Fill plant containers l Insert plant material l Control weeds in planted area l Edge up an amenity area

What can I do next? Progression into suitable employment or onto a Level 1 qualification.

Level 1

This course will suit you if you’re just starting out and want a good basic understanding of the horticulture industry

What do I need? No entry qualifications other than an interest in horticulture, landscaping or gardening.

What will I learn? l Machinery operations l Plant propagation l Maintaining planted areas l Plant identification

You will also be required to undertake a work placement.

What can I do next? This course can lead onto a L2 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills.

Horticulture students have access to excellent facilities, including a large glasshouse, polytunnels, plant nursery, walled garden and arboretum.

City & Guilds L2 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills

Level 2

Full Time 1 Year St Albans

The course is designed to develop practical skills and an understanding of horticulture practices to develop your career in various land based jobs.

What do I need? Three GCSEs at Grade 3/D or above or a relevant Level 1 qualification or some experience within the industry.

What will I learn? l Maintaining borders and pruning techniques l Planting and propagation skills l Industry nursery skills l Laying turf l Vegetable growing

What can I do next? You could progress into employment, into an apprenticeship or continue onto a Level 3 qualification in Horticulture.

City & Guilds L3 Diploma in Horticulture

Level 3

Full Time 1 Year St Albans

This course will allow you to develop the skills to be a more senior worker or manager working in gardening, landscaping or groundskeeping, or to prepare for higher-level training.

What do I need? Four GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above including Maths, English and Science or a Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture.

What will I learn? l Business management l Garden design l Horticultural machinery operations l Horticultural science l Identification of trees and shrubs l Landscape maintenance l Ornamental plant production l Turf management

What can I do next? You could enter into employment in garden centres, nurseries, golf courses, landscape companies and local councils in a wide range of jobs. Successful completion can also lead to progression into Higher Education.
