Oaklands Borehamwood... Oaklands Borehamwood is located on Elstree Way within walking distance of the station and with easy access to the A1. The new facility include a multi-purpose workshop and two large classrooms. Courses available at Borehamwood include English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), adult learning courses, Business, Construction and a range of other subject areas.

St Albans Campus redevelopment The look and feel of our St. Albans campus is transforming over a five-year period. The first phase of the £62million redevelopment, the attractive residential Homestead building, opened in September 2020 and houses up to 80 students as well as two on-site residential wardens. Construction has already started on the ‘Evolution Centre’, the second phase of the redevelopment.

Work Experience (WEX) Our Employability Mentors are here to assist you with all things WEX. This will include CV writing, personal statements and employability workshops. They will also help you to source and log WEX hours.

Careers Advice and Guidance We will provide you with impartial advice and guidance to support you to make informed decisions regarding your career and progression. You can book a 1:1 with a Careers advisor at either campus, as well as attend careers talks by employers, universities and apprenticeship providers.

Being Active The Active8 project encourages students from all courses and abilities to take part in sports and wellbeing activities.

Student Union At Oaklands we give all students the opportunity to have a voice. The OSU meet regularly throughout the year and run student led campaigns to engage and educate the student community.

Work Experience

After impressing as a lighting assistant at a theatre company, Level 3 Media Production student, Ben Williamson was head-hunted to film a segment of The BRIT Awards Show 2020. Ben was part of the lighting crew for the prerecorded interview and performances. This involved rigging and wiring up the lighting used on set.

80% of employers think work experience Is essential and 66% of employers are more likely to hire a young person with work experience over someone with none.

L2 Business student Taku Chioko completed a successful Work Placement with Nationwide. Takuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s placement was sourced by our employability mentors and he was supported with his CV and the application process. Taku took part in a variety of tasks, with his work experience being closely linked to the units of work he was studying at the time.

Oaklands Student App The Oaklands app is a central hub for all our students. The app gives you quick and easy access to all the college programmes you use on a regular basis. It also hosts live feeds for bus and train timetables, campus maps, student services, health information and much more. The app can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play.

Student support Money Matters

Parent Portal

Under 19 Full and part time students ages 16-18 on 31 August 2021 and residents in the EU for the last three years are exempt from tuition fees for all full time courses, but will have to pay for material fees if applicable.

The Parent Portal provides parents and carers of our students with access to information about their son or daughter, including their timetable, exam information, attendance and academic reviews.

19-23 If you are aged between 19 and 23 on 31st August 2021 a tuition fee may apply, in addition to any material costs. In some circumstances, depending on your qualifications or benefits fees may be waived - but again, Student Advice will be able to explain the finer details 24 and over If you are aged 24 and over a tuition fee may apply for your course but you could do this by taking out an Advanced Learning Loan for Level 3 courses and above. Fees again may be waived in certain circumstances so check in with Student Advice to see what applies to you. Financial Assistance This can help you with course costs including childcare, and travel. Bursaries are available to students who have a household income currently below £29,250. Students will need to supply evidence of means tested benefits. Need Childcare? The College has a 50-place nursery at our St Albans Campus. The nursery caters for children from 3 months to 5 years and is available to staff, students and the wider community. How will I travel to college? Whether you are travelling by bus, train or car we ensure that getting to college is as convenient, easy and cheap as possible.

Travel for less with Uno. If the bus is pink and begins with a 6 you can use it. By car As a college we like to encourage ways to reduce the carbon footprint by opting for public transport. If, however, you do decide to travel by car then there is limited parking at all of, or near, our campuses. There is an ANPR payment system in operation at our St Albans Campus and at our Welwyn Garden City Campus you will need to use one of the nearby public car parks where daily rates will apply.

By train There are train links to our main campus towns via ThamesLink.

Hertfordshire Student TrainCard A Hertfordshire Student TrainCard entitles you to a 1/3 discount on the adult season ticket fare for train journeys between home and college at all times of the day. As a full-time A Level student at Oaklands you will: l Study in an adult environment with greater independence. l Beneﬁt from excellent teaching by subject specialists. l Receive a high level of tutor support from our dedicated pastoral tutor

team who will support you throughout the year, including your UCAS application from application to interview. l Be able to access our expanding Virtual Learning Environment from college or home.

The majority of students taking A Levels choose to progress to university. Tutors are very experienced and there is strong support for UCAS applications resulting in many students receiving offers from their first choice of university across a wide range of subjects.

A Level Reforms Most A Level subjects are now following new specifications in line with Ofqual curriculum changes. However, at Oaklands, we have made the decision to still offer separate AS and A2 qualifications following guidance from the top Universities. This means that you will take your AS exam at the end of your first year of study. This is a standalone qualification and has UCAS points attached to it. You will then be able to take the full A Level qualification in your second year of study; first year AS grades will still count towards UCAS points however, should you not wish to continue with this subject to the second year of study.

Combined BTEC/A Level Course Combined BTEC and A Level programmes of study are offered in Business, Sport and Applied Science; students will choose one A Level to study alongside the BTEC. This combination will give you the equivalent of three full A Levels at the end of two years and will carry the same UCAS points as three A Levels. Please see next page for our new A Level and Vocational Package Courses.

Intensive A Levels Some AS/A Level courses are available in a one-year intensive course. Some subjects may be studied in one year by following year 1 and 2 year courses at the same time. You will require some experience of study to A2 Level standard and a strong GCSE profile. We may also take into account your wider qualification profile and references in assessing your suitability for intensive A Levels. Due to the intensive workload, only one intensive A Level should be studied in an academic year and each application will be reviewed on an individual basis.

Springfield Level

Springfield and Supportive Learning are accredited by the National Autistic Society.

Springfield is a specialist provision based at the St Albans Campus which caters for young people aged 16- 22 who have either a profound and complex or severe learning difficulty or disability, and may or may not require additional medical support in order to access to curriculum. This also includes young people whose needs may fall within the Autistic Spectrum and who may have associated communication difficulties and require behavioural support. Following initial assessment, students will be placed with the most appropriate peer group that best reflects their needs and abilities. Curriculum delivery will be led by the Aims and Outcomes as detailed on Education Health and Care Plans. Springfield and Supported Learning are accredited by the National Autistic Society, which highlighted how students are treated as individuals, rather than following a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

All students are encouraged to use switches to operate equipment and to have control of their local environment.

What will I learn? Springfield is split into programmes depending on the needs of the individual student. These include:

The main aims of these courses is to promote basic independence, develop choice making skills through the use of pictures and symbols and to develop the students individual communication strategies using Makaton, PECS, Voca, Eye Gaze and other assisted communication technologies.

Core Skills and Encounters These programmes are designed for students with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties who require a sensory based curriculum. The programs are centered on individual need, but are intended to address the most basic need for sensory discrimination and self-awareness as a starting point. Learning will be encouraged through activities that will develop the ability to “select, integrate and derive meaning from” these experiences.

There is recognition that communication from students is likely to be heavily dependent on carer interpretation and staff continuity will be maintained as far as possible in order to facilitate this. Some students will be able to work with early stages of symbol recognition alongside objects of reference. Choices and Options These courses are for students with a severe learning disability requiring significant assistance to access the curriculum but capable of engaging in more formal activities that will encourage basic independence skills where appropriate.

All students are empowered through switch work and expressive communication strategies to exercise control over their own environment, allowing them to make meaningful choices. Foundation and Young Persons Programme These courses are for school leavers with severe learning difficulties who need a secure, accessible introduction to college life. Learners may have a range of needs and disabilities including physical disabilities, challenging behaviour, autism, downs syndrome and/or experience poor mental heath. Students on the Young Person Programme are functioning at a relatively high cognitive and academic level (high P levels and some aspects at Entry 1). Foundation students have a similar level of need but may be working at a lower cognitive level than students in the Young Persons Programme. The main emphasis throughout these programmes is to encourage and develop communication, independence and life skills, functional English and maths and appropriate social behaviours. Developing and improving communication strategies underpins all activities throughout the week so that learners acquire a range of skills to help them express themselves. Focus Provision These programmes are for students on the autistic spectrum whose autism can have a profound effect on how they interact with the wider world. There are currently five groups streamed by ability.

Focus programs provide an environment that is â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;autism friendlyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, where the learner feels valued and can learn through consistent and predictable routines. Self Help and Independence are a key aspect of all programs. Increased confidence and ability to manage everyday tasks such as taking care of belongings, preparing simple meals and self-care skills form a basis of the support given to develop independence in daily living activities. Staff are skilled at the gradual withdrawal of support, encouraging further independent activity. Photographs, pictures, PECS symbols and other communication resources are employed to support the development of skills All sessions are planned to provide stability and consistency and give warning of any changes whilst being alert to possible signs of stress and anxiety. Students are likely to have a low tolerance of change, may take longer to settle into the college environment and struggle with social interactions, communication and flexibility of thought. We have a large team of Herts Steps Instructors who support students to develop self-management and self-regulatory behaviours. Supporting the development of self-regulatory behaviour is at the core of all programs. Students are individually targeted towards developing their working relationships and peerto-peer interaction. Activities are structured to facilitate opportunities for working co-operatively, gaining confidence, listening to others and participating in group activities.

At Oaklands, we use a range of alternative and augmentative communication methods to support and encourage functional communication development. These are not used in isolation and a student may use several of these methods.

We strive to ensure that we carry over already established communication strategies, although within the context of transition, needs may change and with team agreement these may be appropriately modified.

Methods that are currently used in college are Makaton signing, symbols/photos, a diverse of communication aids, communication books/ passports and objects of reference.

The multi-disciplinary approach is adopted at Oaklands. We work very closely with families, carers, college staff, physiotherapists and previous SALTs. Communication underpins all learning and therefore we are committed to providing specialised support and therapy to each studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s individually identified needs.

Full Time 2 Years option of a 3rd year (subject to review) St Albans What do I need? This programme is for students aged 16-22 on entry, who have a learning difficulty/difficulties and/or disability/disabilities, including those young persons whose needs fall within the Autistic Spectrum range of conditions. There are no formal entry requirements. What will I learn? The programme is made up of four pathways, streamed according to the academic level (to enable the students to work together on group projects) of the individual student. These cover a range of areas, including: l Coping

strategies discipline l Life and community skills l Functional skills in Maths and English l Internal

Internal and external work experience will be offered to all students if this is of benefit to the individual and are designed to support students in accessing the wider community and to encourage them to be more independent in all aspects of their life. Students will be able to access a range of subjects, including creative media, art, life skills, sports, community skills, literacy and numeracy, gardening and performing arts. Accredited qualifications are offered in the relevant subject areas if these qualifications are accessible to the individual.

Each studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s starting point and pathway will be assessed and identified on an individual basis. Students on pathway one will typically have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) or associated traits and may have found accessing college education before challenging, and/or need clearly defined routines and expectations in order to support them in accessing all elements of their college programme effectively. Students on pathway two will be working to: develop independence skills, internal discipline and processing skills, to develop an understanding of their local community, of personal safety, and to develop pre-work vocational skills. Students on pathway three will be working towards further developing independent life and work skills with a view to sustainable, meaningful work and supported living placements beyond college. Students on pathway four may have the potential to access other further education courses in the future, but need structure and clear expectations to access their education in a meaningful manner at the present time. Students may present with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and/ or have been out of formal education for a period of time. What can I do next? Progression routes (explored in the final year of a programme) are tailored to the needs of the individual. Students may move into work or voluntary placements, independent living, or onto another further education course with the appropriate degree of additional support.

You will develop transferable skills to increase your independence at home and in the community, with embedded functional skills. You will learn to take responsibility for your own learning and recognise your strengths and areas you need to develop. Personal development sessions will support and guide you through a range of generic and life skills in order to support your core study programme and to develop wider skills for progressing to further education and/or employment. Workskills focuses on preparing you for employment covering areas such as CV writing, applying for a job and preparing for interview. Lifeskills sessions focus on increasing independence by developing skills needed to plan and prepare home cooked meals. You will also have the opportunity to access a range of other courses at Oaklands including animal care and motor vehicle maintenance to get a taster with support before applying for a place next year. What is a supported internship? Internships are unpaid work and will be accessed alongside college sessions. The on-the-job training will support you to move into paid or voluntary employment at the end of the programme. You will be at work for up to 16 hours a week and at college for two days a week. How it works At the start of your programme you will be fully supported in your chosen work placement. A job coach will assist you with on the job training. As you become competent in your role the support will reduce. (This may take several months). At the end of your work placement the employer will offer an interview which we hope will lead to paid or voluntary employment. Is a supported internship for you? l You need to be at least 18 years old. l You need to have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). l You will need to have a strong desire to work l You will need to be reliable and willing to learn new skills. l You will need to get to your work placement.

Actor Will Rodell spent three years at Oaklands College studying Performing Arts, before excelling at the Manchester School of Theatre where he undertook three further years of training. I completed three lovely years at Oaklands, where I had the best teachers ever. Whilst studying I worked at the Old Vic Theatre in Waterloo, where I was surrounded by colleagues who held similar career aspirations to myself. Sports Academies Combining Education and Sport On all Oaklands Wolves Academy Programmes, the academic side of the course is considered paramount, and any student athleteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s participation on the academy programme will require total commitment to their studies alongside their sport. The individual timetable will allow time to combine both academic and sporting requirements, and stretch students to achieve in both areas. The Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Football Academy is run in conjunction with Arsenal Women FC, the current FA WSL title holders and leaders in developing female football talent. The Academy provides all students/players with the unique opportunity to develop their football as well as continuing with their education and aims to prepare female footballers for the next step in their football journey and fulfil their potential both on and off the pitch. Access to Higher Education

Our nationally recognised qualification is designed to bridge the gap between your existing education and what you need to study at degree level. Each Access Pathway has been designed to provide you with subject specific knowledge, but you will also develop your study skills, academic writing, research skills and ability to work independently. Throughout you will be supported by a personal tutor. Your tutor will also help with that important UCAS application.

What do I need? Generally, you will have been out of formal education for a year. You will have a clear idea of the career path you wish to follow or the subject that you wish to study. We will check your existing qualifications and make sure that Access to HE is right for you. We will also assess your current skills in English and Maths. Typically you will have a GCSE in English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above or an equivalent (perhaps a qualification obtained abroad). You may also need specific experience or a subject specific qualification. I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t got these but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m still interested. We may still be able to help you achieve your place in Higher Education. In some cases a GCSE can be studied alongside the Diploma.

The Access to Nursing and Midwifery course is one of the most challenging but rewarding things I have completed. It has allowed me to start my degree in midwifery and has provided me with the educational foundation to feel confident in starting my degree. How to find us St Albans Campus Set in picturesque parkland, the St Albans Campus combines state of the art teaching and learning facilities with the wide open countryside space required for our excellent landbased and sport curriculum areas. St Albans Campus is approximately one and a half miles from St Albans station and town centre.
