Visual and Performing Arts 2024-25 Season

Page 1

From the Directors

Welcome to the performing arts at Oaks Christian School where artistic expression is alive and flourishing. We have a wonderful season of amazing and compelling events ahead! Our dedicated faculty and staff understand that students do not just perform—they are transformed and transform others by the expression of their gifts in music, dance and theatre. Our students are encouraged and challenged daily to create, explore and discover at a level of professionalism beyond their years. As they do so, they reflect back their inherent Imago Dei—the creative stamp of their Creator God imbued in their own natures. It is my hope that as you attend any one of our events this season, you will be uplifted and inspired by the beauty of song, the power of drama, or elegance of dance.

Different than the written or spoken word, visual arts is a unique way of communicating. At Oaks Christian School, our visual arts students are budding storytellers through the mediums of pencil, chalk, paints, graphic design, clay and cameras. Our program is designed to give each student top-notch exposure to both the how and why of art-making. We nurture creativity, encourage production, refine skills and point students toward the Creator and a heart for service. Our goal is to help students develop their God-given talents and creativity so they can serve and bless others (1 Peter 4:10). I encourage you to attend any one of the exhibits this year and experience first-hand the amazing gifts of our visual artists. Come see for yourself why OCS student-artists are often showcased in our community and win accolades (and honors) at regional and national competitions.

ARTS Education

The world needs artists. The human experience would be incomplete without the creative expression that God has placed in each of us.

Artistic Expression is one of the three distinctives of Oaks Christian School. In a time of shrinking educational arts programs, Oaks Christian School continues to be an arts leader. With our Institute of Arts and Innovation, and our numerous visual and performing arts showcases and exhibits, Oaks Christian School provides extraordinary opportunities for students to develop their creative gifts.

Igniting a Spark

Our robust art curriculum is guided by the principle that art is a core part of any student’s education. Self-expression through art and an appreciation of the beauty and soul-nourishment the arts give are essential to a full life. God is The Great Artist: being made in His image, we are each infused with a creative spark. Our program helps to ignite that spark in each student to help them discover their gifts and find their creative voice.

Expert Faculty and Mentors

Our expert faculty teach and model professional creativity, having their works exhibited and published in galleries, films, digital and print platforms, and musical venues. They lead an extensive program that has won numerous local, regional, and national awards and accolades.

Our art program begins in our lower grades, and culminates with our seniors auditioning, interning with industry professionals, and applying to performing arts majors. Students often work alongside visiting professionals and mentors who direct, coach, and teach master classes.

From Theory to Application

Students are given multiple opportunities to apply theory and classroom instruction. Our students’ work has been published on commercial musical platforms, premiered in theatres, and published in books, displayed in art exhibits, hung in state capitol buildings and art galleries.

Impacting the Future

Today’s student-artists are the culture-shapers of the future. Be it through film documentaries for social change, photography that shines a light on the marginalized, or music that speaks to the human condition, our goal is to train difference makers who will positively impact their sphere of influence.

People everywhere are making the journey to their birthplace to register for Caesar’s census: the little town of Bethlehem is overrun! Nathaniel, a lovable but scatterbrained, late-for-work shepherd, bumps into two of those travelers, Joanna and Simone, as he rushes to watch his flock. The other shepherds are waiting for Nathaniel—late once again—to arrive. Thus begins a story that is all about that Baby with some shepherds, angels, out-of-towners…and singing, talking sheep to guide us along the way!
