Spring/Summer 2019 Celebrating 110 Years

About Us... Working for our community; caring for animals; making a difference. Oak Tree has been helping animals for 110 years. We are passionate about animal welfare and believe that every animal matters, helping hundreds of animals every year. In 2018, we were able to help 1,711 animals in need.

We pet owners Guidance and practical support to munity Education to support our local com d Loving homes for animals in nee mals in our care Individual support for all of the ani Homing Most animals require some form of rehabilitation and veterinary attention on arrival. Staff and volunteers treat every animal as an individual, tailoring a unique program to best suit each animal’s needs while they are preparing for life in their forever home. Our team also ensures prospective owners are equipped and ready to provide a comfortable and safe environment for their pet. Our Community work includes: Resolving animal hoarding cases. Working with our partners at the foodbank, social services, housing associations and other local organisations to help vulnerable pet owners who desperately need our help. Running community clinics and training classes to offer welfare advice and support to pet owners. Working with schools and community groups to educate the next generation of pet owners. Everything we do incurs a cost - equating to £2,200 a day (£800,000 a year). Your support is vital to the charity. Thank you. www.oaktreeanimals.org.uk

Welcome 2018 was an amazing year for our charity. Not only did we find over 400 animals loving new homes, we were also able to help over 1,300 animals remain in their homes through our community work. As a charity, we recognise the bond between pet and owner and work proactively to maintain this wherever appropriate and possible. Our work with foodbanks, partner charities and organisations, and individual owners allows us to make a real difference at the heart of our community where it is needed most. 2019 marks our 110th birthday and is a real cause for celebration as we carry on the work of our founder Francis Cox and subsequently the teams led by Alfred Brisco and Frank Tebbutt. Our charity has helped many thousands of animals in need

throughout the years providing the firm foundation on which we continue to develop, adapting our work to meet the needs of animals and their owners in an everchanging world. None of our work could be done without you, our amazing supporters and volunteers. Costing over ÂŁ2,100 per day to help the animals in our region, every penny and hour donated allows us the opportunity to change lives. Thank you for everything you do for animals. I sincerely hope that I will get the chance to meet you throughout the year at one of our events and together we can make a difference for animals in our region. Thank you for your continued support for our work.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

HICCUP Late last summer the charity was contacted by a local vet who had a stray black and white, young male cat handed in. Despite all efforts, no owner had been found. Hiccup was a sweet cat who could be shy, but easily won over with a fuss or food. He loved to rest in his homemade cardboard castle, complete with flag, and was adored by all of the Oak Tree staff and volunteers. Hiccup was about 18 months old when he arrived at Oak Tree. He had an injury to his left front leg, which meant that it dragged and he could not bear weight on it. It was decided by the veterinary team to monitor his leg and see if he might regain use of it, as it was not causing him any pain. After 5 weeks with no improvement the decision was made that amputation would be the best option. But the day before the operation he suddenly began to start using the leg again and from that day on, feeling and function steadily returned to the leg! Finally, Hiccup was ready for adoption, and a wonderful family came forward to adopt him. We’re delighted Hiccup found his forever home.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

ROXY

Since a puppy, Roxy had been a one-man dog but unfortunately a change in her owner’s situation meant he could no longer keep her and at nearly four years old she had to come into Oak Tree Farm. For the first 48 hours Roxy would not allow anyone to go near her; she barked, ran away and cowered, only eating at night when no one was around. She was clearly a confused and scared little terrier. After lots of gentle encouragement she steadily started to come round, and, by the end of the first week, Roxy was loving her walks, thoroughly encouraged by a good fuss by staff, and was relishing play with her squeaky toy! As luck would have it, a young man was looking for a dog to accompany him to work at his farm job and he felt Roxy would be the perfect companion. He visited numerous times, as he appreciated Roxy needed time to bond with him, and bond she did! So, once again Roxy is a one-man dog, and is loving life. Thank you to everyone who donated to our Community Giving campaign over Christmas helping those in need and giving pets a special treat

Red and Blue Red and Blue are still developing and are learning new tricks all the time! In order to help them progress and not rely on each other too much, we are trialling a separation period. We have given them an older equine mentor each to help teach them some new things; Blue is with Magic and Red is with Pacer. At Oak Tree we recognise that it is vital for our horses and ponies to have great foundations to develop the life skills they need to have for happy futures in their new homes. Therefore, Red and Blue will remain with us for the first 3 years of their lives while we teach them to be handled and get used to life with humans. This includes grooming, travelling in a trailer and, when ready, to be ridden. Red and Blue are still sometimes wary of people and the staff and volunteers here at Oak Tree are working hard to build their confidence up. General handling and work will help continue to improve this. If you would like to keep up to date with Red and Blue’s education you can sponsor their graduation and receive regular updates and news on them both. Sponsorship will help ensure they get all the help they need in order to progress in their training and have the best chance of finding their forever homes when they’re old enough. To find out more about our sponsorship programme, please visit our website at: www.oaktreeanimals.org.uk or email fundraising@oaktreeanimals.org.uk

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

ROCKY After being cared for at Oak Tree Animals’ Charity for over 11 years, Rocky struck it lucky when he found his 5* forever home in May 2018. He has found his perfect home as a companion, and now resides in a nice peaceful place where he can live out his retirement – we couldn’t be happier for him! Rocky, an Irish Sports horse X, is 24 years old and 16.3hh. He is very sweet natured and loves attention – and luckily for him, he gets plenty of that! Fortunately for Rocky, Oak Tree were contacted by Gerald and Wendy, who were looking for a large horse to be a companion to their retired Thoroughbred, Herbie. Rocky now has an amazing home and gets on very well with his new companion and friend! Gerald and Wendy say he is a very lovely horse and a pleasure to own. They have also discovered that the way to Rocky’s heart is through his stomach. We are so pleased that Rocky has such a brilliant, experienced forever home, and look forward to hearing updates on his adventures with Herbie! Huge thanks to Faye at Phase Purple Agility Training for her help in supporting our staff to develop our canine enrichment onsite in the form of agility.

Introducing Consultancy Spring 2019 sees the introduction of our dog consultancy service to support our community and rehoming services. Over 40% of our animal intake calls relate in some way to behaviour and training issues with animals and many of these can be resolved with some element of training and behavioural support. Gemma Pagan has stepped into the role of Canine Training and Behaviour Advisor to provide specialist behavioural and training support for both our internal rehoming dogs and our community. Oak Tree received funding from the Kennel Club Charitable Trust to provide additional training for Gemma, who already has a degree in Animal Behaviour and

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE

GAMES

40%

of our intake calls in 2017 were due to dogs with behaviour and training problems. Many of these could have been prevented by great early training and access to positive training classes – as a charity committed to keeping pets and owners together wherever possible, we decided we could help. In January 2019 our new Consultancy Team ran their first series of Games-based Training Classes at Richard Rose Morton Academy for owners who were facing training problems with their canine ‘loveable rogues’.

These courses take place at Oak Tree Farm, Wetheral Shields CA4 8JA Email training@oaktreeanimals.org.uk for more information.

5 minutes with Jennette and Jackie

We both joined Oak Tree as charity shop volunteers in December last year and were introduced to each other through the charity. We now help out on the same day as a small team which is great! We both love animals and being part of a charity that promotes animal welfare, and helping raise money for such a worthy cause is very rewarding. Getting a chance to meet so many inspiring people who visit the shop to either buy clothes, donate items or give money is amazing too. We help in various different areas of the shop but mainly serve customers and sort out shop stock. We have both had dogs in the past and really enjoyed the company these wonderful animals gave us and hope to volunteer for as long as possible supporting Oak Tree and all the animal’s who need our help. We found out about the volunteer opportunities online and following a conversation with one of Oak Tree’s staff we did not hesitate to apply.

We’d love to hear from you! Please email our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@oaktreeanimals.org.uk or visit our website www.oaktreeanimals.org.uk A massive thank you to Ruby and Daniel at Seatoller Farm who donated the star prize of a week’s stay in the Borrowdale Valley for our Grand Draw! A big thank you to Cash For Kids who teamed up with us for a great night at our Charity Auction.

KESWICK CHARITY SHOP We are delighted to have opened our new Charity Shop in Keswick and we’re very much looking forward to branching out into a new area of Cumbria, where we will be able to share our knowledge and further support good, long term healthy relationships between animals and their owners out in the community. Our Community Team are already working with local organisations in the Lakes promoting responsible dog walking including livestock and dog fouling concerns, and safety when walking your dog on the fells. As such, having a community hub in Keswick will allow more people to access our help directly. The shop is situated at 1 Bell Close, which is at the back of the Inn on the Square and is just off Bell Close Car Park.

All donations are welcomed at the Keswick shop or at the main site in Wetheral Shields. We are currently recruiting for volunteers in both our Keswick and Carlisle Charity shops, so if you’d like to get to meet new people and develop your skills further, then please get in touch with volunteer@oaktreeanimals.org.uk

Oak Tree’s Charity Shop at 1 Bell Close, Keswick is open Wednesday – Sunday | 10.00am – 4.00pm where we will be selling a wide selection of donated items, alongside some of our Oak Tree retail items. A big thank you to the Co-Op Local Community Fund and the generous support of their members who presented us with a cheque for over £2,000. And this year, we have the chance to do it all again! Call our Fundraising Team to find out more.

SAND SCHOOL AND INTAKE At Oak Tree, we have had some incredibly exciting developments in our equine department, with a new sand school and new intake stables! Thanks to an incredibly generous grant from William Geoffrey Harvey’s Discretionary Settlement No 2, we were able to completely transform our intake stable areas. Having a dedicated intake area for our animals is absolutely essential in making sure that each horse or pony who finds themselves in our care is healthy before joining the rest of the herd, preventing the spread of disease. With vulnerable and suffering horses on our waiting list at all times, we will now be able to meet the huge level of need that exists across our region and have an even greater impact

on the welfare of individual horses and ponies. In addition, thanks to the generous support of the Elise Pilkington Trust, our community and partners, our sand school will provide a safe and secure area in which our dedicated staff can train and rehabilitate each of our ponies and horses. This will restore their confidence, building their skills and making sure they can go on to find their forever homes. Our sand school will also provide a wonderful platform for community events and equine workshops, so keep an eye out for announcements! We are so excited about what these new developments will allow us to achieve for horses and ponies across Cumbria. Thank you to everyone involved.

Enormous thanks to Ellen Valley Riding Club for their brilliant efforts in raising ÂŁ3,000 in 2018 through a variety of fundraising events.

SAFETY ON THE FELLS FELL WALKING WITH YOUR DOG Things to consider as responsible pet owners Q. When do I need to use a lead? A. Anywhere that sheep or cattle are residing. It’s important to be aware that a farmer has the legal right to shoot your dog if it’s seen to be worrying livestock. Watch out for our ‘Take a Lead’ campaign, coming soon! Please also be aware of ground-nesting birds between March and August which shouldn’t be disturbed. Q. What do I do around livestock? A. Keep your distance from livestock and move quickly and calmly through their territory. To minimise disturbance, you may find yourself veering off the path slightly. Wherever possible, avoid areas with cows and calves as cows can be extremely protective of their young. It is also important to respect instructions left by farmers – if you’re advised to not enter a field, don’t risk it. If you are threatened by cattle, let the dog go as the cattle will chase the dog and not you. Q. Are dogs automatically fit for fell walks? A. We wouldn’t recommend taking a puppy for long walks as their bones are still developing and too much exercise can harm this process. Always consider your dog’s breed, fitness level and health before planning your route.

Q. Should my dog have ‘mountain’ gear? A. This very much depends on your dog, but we would recommend a harness with a lift handle which can come in handy on the more craggy bits. A windproof coat for use in extreme weather conditions is worth considering too. We recommend a normal feed in the morning and to carry water for both you and your companion. A dog First Aid kit should also be in your rucksack. Q. What if I or my dog get into trouble? A. Establish your location, ideally with a grid reference, dial 999 or 112, ask for Police, then the Mountain Rescue. We would also urge you to check the weather forecast before setting out. Allow plenty of time and don’t ever be afraid to turn back.

We want to encourage organisations who like what we deliver as a charity, to consider working in partnership with us. There are many ways you can work with us to ensure more animals get the help they so deserve: • Volunteering: there are always things we need help with on site • Take on a sponsored corporate team challenge (or get a team together for our sponsored Abseil on 5th October) • Help us raise awareness of our work by displaying a poster • Donate a Raffle Prize for one of our Fairs • Nominate us for your Charity of the Year • Display collection tins in your place of work • Encourage your colleagues to consider donating via Payroll Giving We can offer a few things in return for your commitment: • Advertising and promotion opportunities in newsletters, other written materials, website, social media and at events • Networking opportunities with fellow partners of Oak Tree • Workplace talks to explain partnership opportunities to employees • A very reasonably priced venue for staff training and development days Oak Tree Farm offers a great opportunity to get away from the usual office environment. A Helping Paw A Helping Paw provides a pet fostering service for families fleeing domestic violence and homelessness. The service allows pet owners to place their pets in a safe environment, knowing that they will be cared for whilst they themselves are in a refuge or temporary accommodation. We can offer pet fostering for a maximum of 6 months and the service accommodates any kind of pet.

Knowing that their pet will be returned to them will offer a sense of calm and relief to those who are facing hardship. Can you offer up to 6 months of your time to foster an animal on our “A Helping Paw” program? If the answer is yes, our Community Team would love to hear from you! 01228 560082 ext.230 community@oaktreeanimals.org.uk

Why is “A Helping Paw” important? Studies show that our pets have a positive impact on our mental wellbeing. Just stroking, sitting with or playing with our pet can calm a panic attack, or ease upset.

A huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers. We couldn’t do it without you! And a thank you to everyone who so kindly made a donation in 2018 - we really do appreciate your support.
