About Us... Working for our community; caring for animals; making a difference. Oak Tree has been helping animals for 112 years. We are passionate about animal welfare and believe that every animal matters, helping hundreds of animals every year. Throughout the pandemic we have been able to support the most vulnerable to prevent animal suffering and support pet owners in our region.

hom Finding them a safe and comfortable needs, through r thei and erst the community to und support and education.

We find dogs, cats and horses loving new homes, rescuing and rehabilitating them to give them the best chance of a bright future. Rehoming is intrinsically reactive, something has gone wrong. Our proactive community approach seeks to find solutions for pet owners, wherever practical and appropriate, keeping pets in loving homes and avoiding unnecessary stress and heartache. We work alongside our partners at the foodbank, social services, housing associations and other local organisations to support vulnerable pet owners who desperately need our help. Our Helping Paw programme provides vital short-term fostering for those who are homeless or fleeing domestic violence, helping them rebuild lives while knowing their pet is safe and well cared-for. We run community clinics and training classes to offer welfare advice and support and we also work with schools and community groups to educate the next generation of pet owners. But we could not do anything without you, our amazing supporters. We need to raise £2700 every day to carry out our services to help the animals and owners in our region. For 112 years this charity has been shaped and built on the generosity of our community. Your support is vital to the charity and animals in our region.

Welcome

to our Spring/Summer Newsletter

2020 was such a challenging year for so many, and we, like so many of you, are grateful to see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel in 2021. During this pandemic we have been needed by our community perhaps more than ever before. In 2020, with your support, we were able to help 2807 animals who needed our help through our community and rehoming programmes. Some animals needed to find loving new homes with others needing to find their way back home when lost. Owners needed help with a wide variety of issues including foodbank parcels, emergency fostering services when they were fleeing difficult situations, and veterinary or neutering support. Our staff and volunteer teams have worked tirelessly to make sure every case we are able to help has the right outcome for both animal and owner. To conserve funds we needed to furlough many of our team, but the remaining team stepped up and took up the challenge to support our community as best we can. Our supporters have also stepped up amazingly. With our tearoom, site and charity shops being forced to close with lockdown, you have all got behind us with generous donations, taking part in our online events, fundraising

activities and sending us amazing messages of support and gifts for the animals. Thank you so much we have appreciated every single message and gift and these have given us the boost we have needed during these difficult times. When our boiler broke down as the snow fell, you came to our rescue raising over £12,000 in less than a week so we could repair it – thank you! 2021 will see families and lifestyles further transitioning as we come out of lockdown. We are already seeing an increase in the number of dogs and cats being relinquished, many with behaviour issues directly relating to the pandemic, and more owners facing financial uncertainty where we can provide short term support through our community programmes. We remain committed to helping animals and owners throughout our region, responding to situations as they arise and ensuring we adapt our work in this ever changing world. Following recent government announcements we are really looking forward to being able to welcome you back to Oak Tree soon. Stay safe and thank you so much for everything you do for animals. Caroline

WHERE ARE Evie came to Oak Tree in October of last year as her owner was suffering with ill health and couldn’t give Evie the care she needed. Evie had been very well loved and looked after and her owner was her whole world. Oak Tree was a very big change and Evie was quite overwhelmed and scared when she first came in. It took us a few days of tasty treats and gentle encouragement just to get her out of the kennel. However, once we had her trust, she showed us what a fun loving and affectionate girl she was! Evie was still unsure about new people so we had to take her rehoming slowly to build up a bond with her new owner. Luckily, the right person came along and committed to as many repeat visits as Evie needed. Her new owner says:

She’s honestly a dream and has settled in so well. She seems to be always excited and happy to be playing and going anywhere and I absolutely love that about her. Definitely made my home complete!

THEY NOW? Last summer we were contacted by someone who had found a litter of abandoned kittens on their farm. At only a few days old, they were very vulnerable so were taken in by a foster carer to be hand reared. One of the litter, Chester, was considerably smaller than his siblings and we were worried that he might not make it. Due to the hard work put in by his foster carer he gained strength and condition and blossomed into a very handsome and cheeky young chap! He would use his small stature to his benefit, often squeezing out of his enclosure in his foster home and finding where the food was kept! Chester is now almost an adult and is living a wonderful and happy life with a young couple who adore him and he is still as cheeky as ever! His siblings are also settled and happy in their new homes.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

FURY AND CARTER Fury, a 10 year old pony arrived at Oak Tree in early March 2020. Following an assessment period to gauge his temperament and ability, we felt that he would be ideal as a ‘first pony’. Enter the Parker family who were looking for a suitable pony for their 2 year old son, Carter. They told us “From the day Fury arrived and walked into his stable he has been perfect. Carter is learning to look after Fury and helps with all of the chores including picking Fury’s feet out (with Mum’s help), which he loves. They have formed an amazing bond.” Carter is already learning to ride and Fury is very careful and looks after his young jockey. Things are going so well they have already participated in some online competitions in dressage, showing, trekking and photography. One to watch for the future, this pair are already stacking up the rosettes! We are so pleased that we were able to facilitate this pairing which has been a fantastic success for both Fury and Carter. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for them both.

RED AND BLUE Educating the Next Generation

Our main goal as a charity is to ensure every animal that comes into our care ends up in the right home for that individual animal. One of the ways we can do this is by educating the next generation of horse owners. There are a few ways in which we can do this; holding Pony Fun Days for young children to demonstrate the basic needs of a horse, educational Facebook posts about equine care and offering advice to current and future owners. In December 2020, former residents Red and Blue were rehomed to local riding school Blackdyke Farm, where they will play valuable roles in teaching the younger generation all about horse riding and stable management. This is a great outcome for these two young ponies who were found abandoned as yearlings, and for our Equine Team, who have worked hard to prepare them for their future life. We receive regular reports on their progress and they are clearly enjoying themselves. We are extremely proud of the impact this pair will make on future horse owners!

Volunteering : Fostering an Oak Tree Fosterer’s story “Last summer we lost our 14-year-old beautiful Labrador, Douglas, and we were absolutely devastated. The first week was horrendous: the house didn’t feel like home anymore and we didn’t know what to do with ourselves, we had so much love and time to give but nothing to give it to. We knew we wanted another dog but it had only been a couple of weeks (horrible weeks!) and we were still deep in mourning. We felt lost. Then a good friend of ours suggested we put ourselves forward as fosterers at Oak Tree Animals’ Charity as we could provide a caring, loving home but it wouldn’t need to be long term – we weren’t sure but she said we’d be perfect fosterers and I’m so pleased she convinced us. We were matched with Moose, a young energetic American Bulldog Cross, who was a bit of a handful just because of his size and strength, but he was the biggest, loveliest, soppiest dog and by the end of the first night we could see he was going to make the right family very, very happy. All Moose needed was a family with space and time to give him some basic training and a lot of love. But what Moose gave us was a reason to get up and go for a walk; once again we could smile and laugh at doggy antics and we loved hearing the familiar sounds of paws running around the house and a squeaky toy being played with. Moose helped us massively with the grieving process of losing our beloved Douglas. Yes, we helped him find his forever home but fostering was the most rewarding experience – and one we’ll never forget.”

SPEAKING SPEAKING UP UP FOR FOR ANIMALS ANIMALS In 1909 our forebear ‘The National Equine Defence League’ was established to help improve the welfare of pit ponies in the mines of the UK. Following extensive advocacy work by our founders, alongside others, the 1912 Coal Mines Act became the first legislation to incorporate the welfare of pit ponies into Law. Throughout our 112 year history, we have been actively involved in speaking up to improve the welfare of animals, both locally and nationally, on a variety of animal related issues. This is a legacy on which we continue to build on today. In recent years, we have been able to contribute to national discussions with colleagues from other animal welfare charities in relation to a wide variety of animal welfare issues including: •

Increased prison sentences for animal cruelty offences (which currently carry a maximum penalty of just 6 months imprisonment)

The licensing and regulation of rescue centres (these are currently unregulated in the UK, although some, such as Oak Tree, choose to voluntarily follow at least the minimum animal welfare standards set by the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) and National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC))

‘Third Party Kitten and Puppy Sales’ (with the aim of reducing unscrupulous breeding practices through puppy farming)

Compulsory Cat Microchipping (as we currently have with dogs)

We have provided support for local authorities, businesses and other organisations to help them improve animal welfare in our region and embed animal-friendly practices within their day-to-day work. We remain not only committed to helping improve the animal welfare of those we can directly reach, but also to improving animal welfare across our community and throughout the UK. Where possible we work in partnership with our colleagues in other animal welfare organisations to ensure we can make lasting positive change. Your support allows us to continue the work of our founders.

CHARITY SHOPS We’re looking forward to opening again and with spring almost here it’s time to dig out the summer clothes hoping that they haven’t “shrunk” in the wardrobe during lockdown! We may be “staycationing” this year but we love a new wardrobe for the coming season. Both our shops are fully stocked with Ladies’, Men’s and Children’s clothing, quality bric-a-brac, books and DVDs. If you have had a clear-out during lockdown, we are accepting good quality, clean clothes, bric-a-brac, books and DVDs. If you are a taxpayer we can claim an extra 25% when selling donated items from tax you have already paid if you sign up to Gift Aid with us. Please ask the shop manager or ask at Oak Tree reception for more details. Shop opening times are: Tuesday - Saturday, 10.00am – 4.00pm at both Carlisle and Keswick shops. The donation collecting van will be in Keswick every Friday 1.00pm – 3.00pm or until the van is full. (Due to lack of storage space we can only accept donations at our Keswick shop when the van is there to collect.)

Don’t forget, you can shop online at shop.oaktreeanimals.org.uk or take a look at our items for sale on Ebay.

E D U C AT I O N A N D LEARNING Although the pandemic has disrupted in-school education for many families, Oak Tree has been working hard to ensure that our education resources remain accessible for both schools and families alike. Pop onto our website and follow the Education and Learning link to find some fabulous and fun activities plus links to our new content on Google Classroom. Naturally, the thing we are looking forward to the most is welcoming all of you back to Oak Tree Farm once again. Check out our new ‘Quick Quizzes,’ using QR Codes, that will be popping up around the site to test the animal welfare knowledge of parents and children alike.

For even more fun and engaging activities, why not join Friends of Oak Tree? Suitable for children aged 5-12, there are progressive levels of learning and information about the animals around us, each leading to awards. All the details can be found on the Oak Tree website under Education and Learning.

THANK An ongoing huge thank you to Burns Pet Nutrition who has provided our cats and dogs with animal food on a daily basis and for providing sponsor packs for our #BubbleWoofWalk. A very big thank you to The Lancrigg, Grasmere for donating items from their hotel refurbishment to Oak Tree for onward sale and for providing one of the main Christmas Grand Draw prizes. Huge thanks to A J Portraits for providing our other main Christmas Grand Draw prize of a bespoke pet portrait. More than 40 purchases were made from our Amazon Wish List in 2020 which equated to over £600 worth of donations! Thank you to everyone who bought equipment and treats for Oak Tree animals including the Switchboard Staff at the Cumberland Infirmary and Pawsome Parcels. Thank you so much to Carrs Billington who donated an amazing amount of boxes full of assorted pet accessories and equipment. Big thanks to Happy Herdwick for creating a felted Matilda (available now!) and donating 50% of each one sold. A massive thank you to the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust for providing a generous grant to enable us to buy an equine weigh bridge. Having regular access to a weigh bridge is extremely helpful to ensure all the horses and ponies maintain a healthy weight and that any continual gains or losses are noticed quickly. Later this year we hope to be able to share this excellent facility with the local equine community through weigh days and weight management clinics. Thank you to all our individual fundraisers who have raised a huge amount of money by undertaking our #BubbleWoofWalk and Run for Rescue challenges. You all rock!

YO U ! Another thank you for all individual fundraisers who have raised money by book binding, painting stones, knitting Christmas novelties, having raffles, creating calendars and donating proceeds, Facebook birthday fundraisers and all the various ways that supporters have raised money. Many thanks to HSBC Carlisle, John Watt & Son, The Fairydust Emporium, Woofly Perfect Dog Grooming Salon and Boutique, Kristy Liddle, Natalie Hopker, Capontree Veterinary Centres, Northwest K9 Hydrotherapy and Kingmoor Properties who ran raffles to win pet hampers to raise money for draught excluders in the dog kennels. Many heartfelt thanks to all our amazing supporters who donated money in response to our Winter Warmer Appeal - their fantastic generosity covered the full cost of buying and installing the boiler during a very cold spell of weather. A big thank you to our fabulous supporters who donated rugs for our horses and ponies for the winter months and another thank you to everybody who donated tack for our animals and Tack Shack. Thank you to everyone who responded to our community appeals for dog and cat food. Massive thanks to DSD Carlisle and DSD Construction for their very generous donation of road planings for our Sand School area and to W P & G W Foster for delivering them. Thank you to Mapa Trees Carlisle for kindly donating the beautiful Christmas tree which sat outside the main Reception building in December.

Training Training with with Oak Oak Tree Tree Lockdowns and restrictions have not been holding our Training Team back! When the first restrictions in March came into place, training classes were placed online. As many dogs had new routines with more people at home, or less exercise, it was really important that training opportunities were there for those who wanted them. With restrictions changing again as the country comes out of lockdown, our in-person training classes will be up and running as soon as possible while adhering to all outdoor and Covid restrictions.

Puppy classes: our Acorn class has been very popular, designed for puppies up to 6 months and helping owners through those initial first stages of training. Life skills: Have a dog over 6 months? Already completed a puppy course or need a training refresh? The Life Skills class is ideal for dogs who just need something to help them learn, build a relationship with their owner or have some fun!

For further information and dates of training classes, please email training@oaktreeanimals.org.uk or take a look at our website.

NEW NEW RESIDENTS RESIDENTS

Earlier this year the charity welcomed two new residents, Charlie and Pringle. Having previously worked as ‘assisted therapy’ donkeys, they will live out their retirement with Oak Tree. Although retired, they will still have an important role to play. The donkeys came from and were transported to us by The Donkey Sanctuary with whom we are looking forward to developing an exciting new partnership.

We will provide our site and, of course Charlie and Pringle, to regional officers from The Donkey Sanctuary to facilitate the training of potential future donkey adopters. In the meantime the boys are settling in nicely and enjoying relaxing and being pampered. They are already becoming firm favourites on site.

Trap, Neuter, Return I approached Oak Tree Animals’ Charity with a big problem that we had on the farm – too many cats and suddenly too many kittens, thanks to a wild tom cat that kept visiting our farm! Our family of cats do a great job of keeping the vermin population low on our farm and we would far rather have these cats than put poison down to get rid of rats and mice. However, last summer a family of kittens walked into the yard, following mother cat, to the place where I feed the adult cats, then a few weeks later another family came, then another family after that! The grandchildren loved seeing the kittens, but there were too many. A few months later the wild tom cat was seen visiting again and I could only envisage that there would be more kittens soon... Help! I had heard about the work of Oak Tree Animals’ Charity and so decided to phone them with my problem. My phone call to them put me at ease straight away and I immediately felt a sense of relief – the reply was “yes, we can help you” and they told me about the ‘Trap Neuter Return’ programme. Julie, a team member, rang me the next day to ask for more details and explain the procedure. A few days later, she came to the farm to set down some open-end cages for me to use as a feeding place, then a week later Julie came to trap the cats at feeding time. All the cats and kittens (12 of them) were taken away then returned a few days later – they had been neutered and looked after so well. I was impressed with the level of care and professionalism. A big THANK YOU to the Oak Tree Team. We gave them a donation to help them with the amazing work that they do!

IMPACT OF

CORONAVIRUS

ON DOGS

Many owners have found their dogs struggling with lack of downtime due to families being home 24/7. Left to their own devices, all dogs sleep for 12 to 14 hours a day and puppies for up to 18 hours. Lack of sufficient rest and sleep can lead to behaviour problems such as reactivity, excessive barking and destructive behaviour. Puppies bought over the last 12 months have had an especially hard time due to the lack of opportunities, not just for downtime but for socialisation and exposure to different environments. Equally, the financial impact of the pandemic has led to many families feeling unable to afford their pets and having to make the heart-wrenching decision to relinquish them. Our Food Bank support for pets has proved vital for many. Thankfully, we have been able to help. Whether owners have been struggling with financial or behaviour issues, the staff at Oak Tree have been able to help over 2,000 owners in our region throughout this pandemic.

How you can help

We are always incredibly grateful for the generosity and loyalty shown by our supporters. Our office continued to operate with skeleton staff for a large part of the pandemic and it has simply not been possible to personally acknowledge all the amazing acts of kindness we have witnessed during this time. We would like to take the opportunity to THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

You may have responded to our Winter Warmer Appeal back in January, which saw a phenomenal £12,000 donated in a matter of days, allowing us to replace our broken 15 year old boiler as the snow fell. You may have taken on a fundraiser or donated food and treats, or you may have donated via our website, text, Facebook, or Virgin Money Giving, sent in a cheque or set up a standing order. However you have supported us, we have been astounded by the generosity shown. We continue to feel very encouraged by the response to emergency help from Grant Funders – and would like to thank them too. We urge you to please keep responding to our requests for financial support when you can – we can’t stress enough what a difference your continued contributions make. The accounts of happy endings for animals recorded in our newsletter and social media, and the range of work we are involved in, would simply not be possible without you. Visit our ‘Events’ and ‘Get Involved’ sections on the website to see the assortment of ways you can continue helping animals and owners greatly in need. If you would like to make a donation today, please either see the opposite page, or donate via our website, Facebook, or over the telephone. The animals, staff and volunteers THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. Together, we are achieving remarkable things.
