Annual

Is it that time of the year already? The holidays are right around the corner and that means it’s time for our annual HOLIGAY GUIDE! This year marks the 5th anniversary and we wanted to have some fun with this one. This year we have taken a classic song that no one remembers the lyrics to, and reworded it to fit the GLBT community with a campy twist. We present to you:

12 “Before they venture off into hibernation, here are some gift ideas for that teddy bear in your life.”

Alex Mustafa

O&AN STAFF REPORT

It’s that time of the year again when “da bears” are fixing to cozy-up in their caves for a long winter’s nap and rest-up for “hunting” next year. Before they venture off into hibernation, here are some gift ideas for that teddy bear in your life. Off course all bears love to eat, so why not give them a home-cooked meal? It’s personal and from the heart. Or you could just take them to Shoney’s for the all-you-can-eat buffet for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This will give them more of a variety, and more food to store in their belly. Before they snuggle down, watch a fun-filled movie that’s all about bears: Disney’s “Brave.” Now you couldn’t tell this from the previews, but more than half of this animated film revolves around them. This movie will make a perfect addition to your bear collection — which already includes “Yogi Bear,” “The Berenstain Bears,” “The Jungle Book,” “Kung Fu Panda” and “The Care Bears Movie.” Now while they are sleeping, of course their fur will grow. If it gets too crazy don’t be afraid to use the body hair grooming kit you got them. There are several to choose from and any will do the trick when you want to tame their fur. If you want to completely remove their coat, Nair or hair removal wax will do the trick. Though you might want to warn the neighbors before you do this because they will probably hear a loud grizzly-bear growl and call animal control. And we don’t want them to be taken away now do we? 11 “Another good gift would be a tanning membership, because you have to keep up that tan year-round.”.

David Redden

O&AN STAFF REPORT

You know you’re a twink if you are on every gay dating and social network site, and you use the same profile photo. So the perfect gift would be a photo session with a profession photographer. You’ve got to mix-up your profile picture, and you may never know when you will need a professional looking photo of yourself. Another good gift would be a tanning membership, because you have to keep up that tan year-round. But don’t forget to include some moisturizer so the skin is rejuvenated. For some reason, twinks think they are already getting wrinkles and age spots when they just popped out of their mom yesterday. There’s no fighting this with them, so any type of wrinkle removal cream will work to “help prevent their wrinkles.” The world was devastated in late November when we heard the horrible news: There will be no more Twinkies! They are the perfect representation of a twink (just use your imagination and you will figure it out). Who knows, maybe by the time you read this article things will be better in the Hostess world and our beloved Twinkies will still be around. But just to be safe, run out to the closest grocery store or gas station and buy them up. Or visit Ebay.com and place a bid on one. O&AN

10 “Maybe even consider a gift card to Jo-ann’s or Hobby Lobby so they can really jazz up their signs..” Phillip Reinert

O&AN STAFF REPORT

Being a GLBT activist in the state of Tennessee is a very tiring job these days, especially the last two. With everything that’s been going on, we are surprised if they have any free time. So here are some gift suggests we feel are perfect for that advocate in your life. Every activist needs to have a megaphone so they can project their message. There are two options to pick from. The first is an old-school cheerleading megaphone. These things are huge and they also can be decorated however you like. The second kind is the electric one. They might be small, but they sure do project your voice for longer distances, and maybe even miles. Just make sure to follow noise and music level guidelines for the city you are in. You may have free speech on your side, but this one is overlooked a lot by activists. An activist can never have enough poster boards and markers. You don’t want

them to reuse the same signs over and over again. Maybe even consider a gift card to Jo-ann’s or Hobby Lobby so they can really jazz up their signs. Now don’t make this not-so-obvious gift mistake when shopping for an activist: buying GLBT activist gear. Lord knows they already have all of the T-shirts, buttons, stickers and signs from NOH8 to FCKH8 and beyond. So why not give them a relaxing day at the spa or an hour-long massage? If you want to splurge some, take a weekend trip out of the state — trust me, we all want to get out of here as often as possible. Short drives are Louisville, Atlanta and St. Louis, and they all have plenty of attractions and nightlife to provide for an entertaining retreat. These will totally help to relax the fighter in your life and help make theirs less stressful. But if you decide to go with a completely different gift, make sure you check the HRC Buyer’s Guide. This will help you identify which businesses have the best practices toward workplace equality. Don’t be caught giving them gifts from places that have low scores because you might not be around much longer if you do! O&AN

9 “Now here’s an idea to keep the gay in your life working out at home more and help satisfy your needs : a Shake Weight. It’s the best of both worlds.”. O&AN STAFF REPORT

Oh what eye candy they are! We could all just sit and watch them workout all day. If you have one of these in your life, here are some ideas to help them get the max out of their workout. The first one is a no brainer; find out how much longer they have on their gym membership and extend it for a few months. This will mean they will be away from you more, but it’s something they love doing. Now here’s an idea to keep the gay in your life working out at home more and help satisfy your needs: a Shake Weight. It’s the best of both worlds. For the lesbian in your life, get her the classic

Thighmaster. It will be “easy to squeeze, squeeze your way to shapely hips and thighs” … Or so the commercial says. The gym bunny probably takes a lot of vitamins and protein powders. It’s so hard to keep up with what they take, so give them a gift card to a nutrition store so they can get exactly what they need. Also, they sweat a lot. Why not get them some new workout clothes and iPod arm holder? In fact, make them a workout playlist so it helps energize their routine. And for when they want to measure how much they have lost or gained, buy them a new digital scale so they can track their goals. O&AN

8 “If we’ve learned one thing, it’s that lipsticks are extremely picky.”. Gabrielle Gambino

O&AN STAFF REPORT

Probably the most classic term to describe a very feminine lesbian; lipsticks enjoy shopping, fashion, getting all gussied up for a night on the town. There are many possible gifts to give to a high maintenance lipstick, but be sure to ask what she wants! One of the easiest gifts to give a lipstick is makeup. Whether it’s Sephora or Avon, she wants to look as if she’s a spokeswoman for L’Oreal Paris.

7

Though you better ask what kind she uses so you don’t get the wrong thing. They also love purses and handbags. You can never go wrong with Coach or Louis Vuitton to carry around all of her makeup, cell phone, brush, gum, sling-back pumps and what ever else she has in there. But also, ask what specific one she wants. Hairstyles are just like fashion: always changing. Help keep them up-to-date by getting them a gift

certificate to their favorite salon. This way it gives them the option of how to cut and style it. For an entertainment gift, give them “Sex in the City: The Complete Series,” “Sex in the City: The Movie” or “Sex in the City 2.” Chances are they already have one or two of these. If we’ve learned one thing, it’s that lipsticks are extremely picky. So just make sure you ask what exactly they want. O&AN

“Log Cabin Republicans need an elephant figurine on the shelf right beside a framed portrait of President Ronald Reagan..”. O&AN STAFF REPORT

It has been a month since President Barack Obama was re-elected, and there is a small group within our community that is still upset by this: they are Log Cabin Republicans. We must admit; they are a strange breed in the GLBT community — that’s saying a lot — and most don’t understand them. But what does one get a Log Cabin Republican? One of my friends suggested therapy. Now I think that’s a bit harsh. So I suggest money. That’s right cold-hard cash. Why you may ask? Well they invested a lot into Gov. Mitt Romney’s campaign and the payoff wasn’t what they were hoping for. A gift that will express how much you

DECEMBER 2012

know about them is a laser tag or shooting range gift certificate. Republicans love their Second Amendment rights and they don’t want them taken away, so why not let them have some fun. This would be a fun weekend activity for them to release their anger over the election. A nice gift for their log cabin would be elephant décor. Log Cabin Republicans need an elephant figurine on the shelf right beside a framed portrait of President Ronald Reagan. The classic movie “Dumbo” would be an unexpected gift along with a stuffed elephant for the bedroom. But who are these people really? We spend many years trying to break down these closet doors while others are building log cabins. Come out and let us know who you really are and what you’re about. We would love to do a story on you in the future! O&AN

“Carrying a handkerchief is a classy thing to do as a prep, so think about getting one monogrammed for a special gift.”.. RENEE LAYHER

Preps are known for their clothes, involvement in the arts and giving an arm and leg for the latest issue of Vouge and potently going into debt trying to live a life style they can’t afford. They randomly host a party for no reason every so often. Try to keep the party “clean” (which means light drinking only). If you see someone getting drunk, don't let them drive or hurt themselves or others. Don't get drunk yourself — you will look like an idiot! Preps don’t do that. If shopping for a prep, keep in mind, they wear respectable brand name clothes such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, LaCoste, The North Face and J Crew to name a few. Rugby T-shirts and chinos help the preppy guy. Also, shop for clothes that come in classic preppy colors such as navy blue, yellow, sky blue, Nantucket red, pink and don’t forget lime green. If you want to buy the prep in your life, shoes, go with a great loafer in a cognac or cordovan color for the fall and winter. Being well groomed is important, so you could buy him a great manicure tool set, or shaving products and cologne. Keep the scents clean, and stick with one scent. Don’t mix several fragrances. Carrying a handkerchief is a classy thing to do as a prep, so think about getting one monogrammed for a special gift. If you want to go all out for that special preppy person, a membership to a country club, the Frist Center, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, Cheekwood or tickets to the next symphony or ballet would be lovely gifts. like Smack, or online retailers like Zeyzani.com and Zappos.com to find some unique styles. If your queen is blessed with the ability to sew, and make her own costumes then a Jo-ann or Hancock Fabric’s gift card might be your way to go. If you see some fabric you think she would like, remember stretchy fabric is always a plus for some of us. Don’t forget to get some matching thread and an invisible zipper to bring it all together. She will love you for taking that extra step, trust me! If she doesn't sew, but is very crafty, like myself, those gift cards will come in handy to pick up stones, e-6000 (the best craft glue ever made), feathers, hot glue, and yes, maybe even some duct tape! Another great gift is a new make-up mirror! They don’t last forever, and can be expensive. I won’t lie; I have picked up a few at the local Goodwill in my past. I think I paid $3 for my last one. Can’t beat that. Along with a mirror, a make-up case is always a good thing to have. I have two, one small to just hold the basics and a larger one for going to out of town gigs and pageants. Jewelry! How did I get this far down on the list and not mention jewelry? Remember, most times, bigger is better. Every queen needs some signature pieces. A jewelry box is always a good idea too. Some things to remember when buying jewelry: check for missing stones, make sure the stones are glass or crystal (plastic stones won’t sparkle on stage), and make sure to know if her ears are pierced or if she needs clip-on backs. Don’t worry if you find the perfect earrings and they are not clip-ons and her ears aren't pierced, there are converters out there. One last gift that could prove invaluable is a photo session with a photographer who knows how to shoot queens. The right angles and lighting are key. These photos will enhance her career both by using them for promo pictures, and for her Facebook and website images. These items might be on any queen’s, or king’s wish list. Nashville has some great local shops, and some amazing performers, so lets dress them in style! O&AN

Another group that has not received a lot of attention in the past is the gay nerd. Although I can understand why: they are always playing “World of Warcraft” or “Skyrim.” A good gift to get them is sunscreen because they never leave their room, or house for that matter. They would get a sunburn if they stood outside for 10 seconds. Also, give them some vitamin D and E. But I must admit, nerds and gaymers are very loving. So make sure your spoil them this year and show how much you love them. There are plenty of gadgets and video games out there to choose from. The Fruit Fly. She’s your go-to girl. The one you shop and gossip with. The one you hit the bars with. The one who listens to all of your homodrama. So you’d better make her gift a good one. And the best thing about shopping for her? It doesn’t matter if you give her a gift late. She knows you run on gay time. The idea is the Fruit Fly Bible: “Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys: True Tales of Love, Lust, and Friendship Between Straight Women and Gay Men” by Melissa de la Cruz and Tom. A collection of essays from a variety of writers all on the topic of the best relationship a lady will ever have. All of the pieces will probably speak to some part of both of you, so you should get two copies and keep one for yourself to remind you how lucky you are to have such an amazing creature in your life. Also, it may be a good idea to bundle this with a box of tissues. It’s touching, OK? The next is the TV series with introduced the world to the ultimate story of a girl and her gay: “Will & Grace: The Complete Series.” It ran for eight seasons and won a ton of Emmys and Golden Globes because everyone loves a fruit fly. So whether she’s a Grace Adler or a Karen Walker, get her this eightdisc collection to complete her home homo theatre. Unless she already has it. Which she probably does. Because it’s kind of her life story. So maybe check on that first. Last but certainly not least is Vodka of the Month Club. Is it pricey? Yes. But this isn’t just your average Stoli or Skyy or, God forbid, Skol, either, so only reserve this gift for your very best bitch. And this is the gift that keeps on giving. Because who is she going to call up every month when that pretty little package lands on her doorstep? That’s right. It’s the gifting circle of life. And after all “It's Christmas, for goodness sake. Think about the baby Jesus ... up in that tower, letting his hair down ... so that the three wise men can climb up and spin the dradel and see if there are six more weeks of winter.” Oh Karen Walker always says it best. Scan the QR code to download a coming out playlist O&AN STAFF REPORT

We have all been in there at some point in our lives. Some probably reorganized the closet multiple times before kicking the door down. The first gift you should get a closeted gay is a flashlight. It gets dark in there and there’s no telling how many outdated clothes there are. Another gift idea is a Container Store gift card. If you’re in the closet, you might as well make sure it’s organized. A book that will help understand GLBT culture is “Stuff That Makes A Gay Heart Weep” by Freeman Hall. It has everything from bad drag to trainwreck Britney to gay pride letdown. At the end you can figure out the percentage your gay heart is weeping.

Music is full of references to coming out and big gay anthems. Make them a playlist of these songs or scan the QR code to download a Spotify playlist. It has everything from “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera to “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga to “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. And there are a lot of Broadway songs as well. Another idea is a subscription to O&AN. For the closeted gay on the go, who can’t dare be seen picking up a GLBT publication, we’ll deliver to their door in subtly wrapped packaging. And we are at the end of the 12 Gays of Christmas with our Partridge in a Pear Tree: A dyke in a U-Haul. They say that three months of dating in the gay world is like six months in straight world. Why not get them a motion-activated screwdriver? This made Time Magazine’s Best Inventions of the Year. This screwdriver uses sensors found in smartphones and Nintendo Wii controllers. When you tilt it to the right, it goes clockwise. The left, counterclockwise. With this you will be able to screw in any direction. Dykes love football so why not get them tickets to the Titans, Vanderbilt or UT for next season? There is also the fan gear like sweaters, T-shirts and car decals. Also, make sure you can get all of the sport channels for whenever the big game comes on. This will also give her the opportunity to watch other sports she might not be familiar with. A subscription to Sports Illustrated or ESPN Magazine will work too. Or you could just give one big gift this year: a trip to Key West, Fla. Take her away from the cold and visit a place that’s warm, sunny and accepting of the GLBT community. You can have all of the Key Lime Pie your hearts desire. O&AN

Growing number of companies adopting non-discrimination language for funding requests by O&AN STAFF REPORT

GLAAD and Scouts for Equality have also called attention to the Americans who are continuing to be harmed by the anti-gay policy, including Kentucky dad Greg Bourke who was ousted from his son’s troop this summer and launched a Change.org campaign to be reinstated as well as 18 year-old Ryan Andresen whose mother started a Change.org petition which is at over 420,000 signatures after he was denied an the rank of Eagle Scout because he is gay. Earlier this year President Obama, who serves as honorary president of the Boy Scouts of America, publicly opposed the Boy Scouts of America’s anti-gay policy. O&AN

NEW YORK, NY - GLAAD applauds The UPS Foundation’s decision to join a growing number of corporate leaders in providing financial support to those organizations that align with the company’s non-discrimination policy. The UPS Foundation had reviewed the policy for several months and posted the following on its website: “The UPS Foundation seeks to support organizations that are in alignment with our focus areas, guidelines, and non-discrimination policy. UPS and The UPS Foundation do not discriminate against any person or organization with regard to categories protected by applicable law, as well as other categories protected by UPS and The UPS Foundation in our own policies. These include, but are not limited to race, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran or military status, pregnancy, age and religion.” UPS confirmed to GLAAD that under these guidelines, which UPS said have been in development for several months, organizations that are unable to attest to having a policy or practices that align with the Foundation’s non-discrimination policy will no longer be considered eligible for funding. UPS has consistently received high marks on the Human Rights Campaign's (HRC) Corporate Equality Index, an annual survey that rates U.S. corporations on their non-discrimination policies and practices toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees and consumers. “More and more corporate leaders are enacting strong non-discrimination policies for practices including grant funding and hiring. Equality is not only good for business, but supported by a vast majority of Americans,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. Prior to The UPS Foundation’s non-discrimination language, UPS gave $167,000 to various Boy Scouts of America (BSA) entities in 2010 and said there would not be a change to grant-making at that time according to an American Independent report in September. The BSA currently ban gay young people and adults from serving as scouts and as scout leaders. In September, the Intel Foundation said the company could no longer fund organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, so long as the Scouts stand by their ban. BSA troops and councils around the country that have stated they will not adhere to the ban may still receive support from the Intel Foundation. The CEOs of two major companies — AT&T and Ernst & Young — called for an end to the Boy Scouts’ anti-gay policies earlier this year. AT&T’s CEO, Randall Stephenson, and Ernst & Young’s CEO, James Turley, both sit on the national board of the Boy Scouts of America. GLAAD, along with Scouts for Equality, is contacting corporate sponsors of the Boy Scouts of America to inform of them of the BSA’s ban on gay scouts and scout leaders. More than 80,000 people signed a Change.org petition started by Co-Founder of Scouts for Equality, Zach Wahls, and supported by GLAAD, which called on The UPS Foundation to end funding from the national BSA. “The time is now for the BSA to end this outdated and unpopular ban before other corporate funders pull dollars and scouting families drop their support,” Graddick said. “All of the great work that the BSA does to help young people will continue to be overshadowed by their blatant discrimination until they join other inclusive organizations like the Girl Scouts of the USA and the 4-H Club.” GLAAD first started calls for the Boy Scouts of America to end their ban on gay scouts and scout leaders in April 2012 after Jennifer Tyrrell, a mom and den leader from Ohio was removed from her 7-year-old’s Cub Scout Pack for being gay. Tyrrell’s Change.org petition has attracted more than 330,000 signatures in support of ending the Boy Scouts’ ban on gay Scouts and leaders.

THE NUMBERS

The Tennessee Equality Project (TEP) has petitioned President Barack Obama to sign an executive order barring job discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in federal contracting. The petition can be found at the White House’s petition website wh.gov/9ALQ. The Hill reported on that leading national equality advocacy organizations plan to call on the president to sign the order. TEP president Chris Sanders maintains Tennessee’s GLBT community has a particular interest in the president signing the order. “Our experience in Tennessee is worth highlighting as the national effort moves forward because the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County adopted a contractor nondiscrimination ordinance in 2011 only to see it overridden by state law that same year,” Sanders said. “We have little hope of achieving these protections at the state level and now our options at the local level are limited by state law. Progress at the federal level would help protect people in Tennessee who are employed by federal contractors.” TEP’s petition presents a stark contrast to the many petitions at the White House petition site calling for secession, including one from Tennessee. Sanders said, “We believe in the word ‘United’ in ‘United States’ and in the promise of America for all of us. It is disappointing to see these expressions of reactionary separatism that recall the past. Our petition represents a commitment to work for a more perfect union in the best American tradition. The petitions calling for secession indicate that some of our neighbors are giving up on our country. We call them back to dialogue and the task of working together for the good of all.” For more information about the Tennessee Equality Project, go to www.tnequalityproject.org. O&AN

90 percent of GLBTs helped the President win close election by O&AN STAFF REPORT

The Community Marketing & Insights (CMI) pre-election poll showed that 90 percent of gay men and lesbians voted for Barack Obama. The election poll of 6,625 GLBT United States citizens was administered Nov. 2-4 and responses were received from all 50 states. GLBTs represent an estimated five percent of United States voters and an overwhelming majority supported the coalition that produced Barack Obama’s victory. Ninety percent support for Obama was seen in all battleground states and the percentage was similar to the level Obama received from the African American community.

Demonstrating the importance of the election, 95 percent of GLBTs indicated they would vote in the election and 41 percent indicated the had already voted before election day. Final data indicated that 90 percent supported Barack Obama, six percent for Mitt Romney and four percent for a third party candidate. GLBTs gave 41 percent of money to the Obama campaign. Respondents were part of CMI’s international research panel of 70,000 GLBT people. Community Marketing is a an GLBT market research firm providing market intelligence and insights to more than 100 corporate brands globally. O&AN

President Obama’s re-election a victory for marriage equality by O&AN STAFF REPORT

President Barack Obama's historic re-election demonstrates that supporting fairness for GLBT Americans is a political positive and, in fact, generates enthusiasm and votes for candidates. From making numerous GLBT appointments, to ending Don't Ask, Don't Tell, to calling for the demise of the Defense of Marriage Act to his endorsement of same-sex marriage, the first time by a sitting president, President Obama has heroically led America on the path to equality, and he was rewarded with reelection. Another election made history when Wisconsin voters selected Tammy Baldwin as their new U.S. Senator, the

first openly gay or lesbian member of the U.S. Senate. The common-sense voters of Wisconsin looked at the candidates' qualifications, experience and policies and determined that Baldwin best represented them, and her sexual orientation apparently played no part. She will bring an important new voice to the Senate. Win or lose on any one race or one referendum, the momentum toward social justice gained significant ground during the 2012 campaign as more people were educated about the desire of GLBT Americans to live fulfilling lives, build families and contribute to the strength of America without unfair legal restrictions. ELECTION 2012

GLBT church heads celebrate Obama, state votes on marriage equality by O&AN STAFF REPORTS

Heads of the historic Metropolitan Community Churches and The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries celebrated and claimed a victory for a fair society in the re-election of Barack Obama, the election of Tammy Baldwin — the first openly lesbian Senator — along with the first wins on marriage equality ballot measures at the state level. “Justice Prevails! For the poor, for women, for students, for people of color, for Same Gender Loving people, for our elderly and for those who love peace and fairness this is a great day! May God's power and protection keep President Obama and his family,” said Bishop Yvette Flunder, head of a nationwide network of primarily African American churches that receive members regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

“The re-election of President Barack Obama means that fairness is still a core American value. America understands that Obama stands for every American rather than the few at the top of the economic heap,” said the Rev. Dr. Nancy Wilson, Moderator of the historic Metropolitan Community Churches with ministries in 40 countries. “We celebrate that ObamaCare, Social Security, Medicare, and education will continue to serve the people. Today, fairness wins! “Fair-minded Americans took stock of comments about rape, 47 percent ‘entitled victims,’ tax cuts for the rich, vouchers for Medicare and we sent a message. Republicans, show some respect for the people who are the backbone of this country!” Dr. Wilson said. “Black Americans stood up and supported President Obama despite massive efforts to block our votes and get us to stay home. But African Americans know that Fannie Lou Hamer was beaten to within an inch of her life, just for registering to vote. We do not forget! Our votes came through a civil war and civil rights marches. No one is gonna turn us around!” Flunder said. “Voters of all races and classes supported President Obama knowing that he eliminated “Don’t Ask — Don’t Tell” so gay and lesbian soldiers can now serve openly.” Wilson said. “Obama signed the hate crimes law, he advocated to eliminate persecution

internationally, he spoke out against bullying, and he gave his personal support to marriage equality. The next four years is another opportunity to show respect for all Americans, regardless of our race, economic standing, whom we love or how we express our gender.” “The election of Tammy Baldwin as the first openly lesbian Senator and the most support ever for marriage equality in Maryland, Minnesota, Maine and Washington makes it clear that the tide is turning for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans and our families,” Flunder said. “We have more work to do! We will work in our communities and with national leaders to overturn DOMA and to protect human dignity around the world. Even while the United States strides toward freedom, countries throughout the world are faced with a rising tide of Christian fundamentalist influences from the United States to create waves of discrimination and violence toward sexual minorities.” “LGBT people know what it is to be targeted. We will never settle for just gaining and protecting our own rights,” Wilson said. “Everyone’s rights depend on protecting those who are most vulnerable. The words of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ring true today, ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ The people won again with the election of President Barack Obama but the work continues. We stand with LGBT people and suffering people in the United States and around the world. O&AN

The Tennessee Artisan Market, which opened in December 2010 at The Renaissance Center, celebrates their 2nd anniversary with an Annual Holiday Sale, expanded holiday hours and the addition of books, music and Artisan Foods, including local farm products and Pick Tennessee Products. The market, which features art, crafts and goods made exclusively by Tennessee artisans, now includes more than 175 artisans from across the state, from the Great Smokey Mountains in the east to the banks of the Mississippi River in the west. The store was originally designed to showcase Tennessee artists and their wares including paintings and sculptures, crafts such as pottery and jewelry, as well as handmade furniture and stained glass. In the past year the market added products from local book authors and musicians and is now offering local artisan foods. Prices for items in the market range from $2 greeting-card prints to large paintings for several thousands of dollars. “We get a lot of requests for Tennessee food products from people traveling the state,” said Bob Kucher, senior director of Fine Arts. “So it was a natural move to now offer those products, including locally made honey, sauces, jams and jellies, sweets and candies and baked goods.” The recent Artisan & Food Fair presented by the Tennessee Artisan Market and Local Table magazine on Oct. 27 helped introduce the store to many Tennessee food producers who have since joined the market. “We hope to continue adding these delicious goods,” Kucher said. In celebration of the 2nd year anniversary, the Tennessee Artisan Market has scheduled a Holiday Sale, artisan demonstrations and special shopping opportunities, including: 20 percent off all items (except books, CDs and food) from Black Friday (Nov. 23) through Dec. 24. And 10 percent off of books, CDs and food from Black Friday (Nov. 23) through Dec. 24. Purchase $40 or more in the market and receive two free tickets to the CyberSphere full-dome Digital Theater (to be used on any date – CyberSphere shows are presently scheduled for Saturdays) Purchase $100 or more and receive 2 free tickets to “A Christmas Carol, The Musical” in the Performance Hall. Presented by the Renaissance Players, the show runs from Nov. 30 – Dec. 16 on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Expanded holiday hours, including Sundays in

December. Free artisan demonstrations and artist meet and greets on Saturday, Dec. 15, all day, various crafts. Drawing for a Curt Brock Blown Glass Vase, valued at $125, on Saturday, Dec. 15. Visitors to The Renaissance Center can fill out an entry ticket in the market. The Tennessee Artisan Markets regular hours are Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., the market will be open Sundays in Dec. (Dec. 2, 9, 16 and 23), 1 – 5 p.m., and on Christmas Eve Day: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Recently the market also added books from Tennessee authors as well as select CDs from musicians who have performed at The Renaissance Center.

It has become so popular with the creative community that it’s been expanded from the 2,000 square feet of the former bookstore to include an additional 800 square feet of the former music piano lab. Artists and local food producers interested in selling their products at the Tennessee Artisan Market should contact Lisa Wright, Lisa.Wright@rcenter.org, (615) 740-5512. “We have a wonderful extended family of talented artisans and musicians involved in the center,” Kucher said. “So if there’s an interest in any particular craft, we can certainly schedule a free demonstration, workshop or continuing class in that technique,” Kucher said. Artisan demonstrations and workshops can also be designed for field trips and groups and the Tennessee Artisan Market is also available for private parties and events such as a recent gathering and presentation for Tennessee interior designers. O&AN hires Susan Mee as new advertising manager by O&AN STAFF REPORTS

After a two-month search, we have hired Susan Mee as our new advertising manager. She will be replacing Allen Haley as he pursues work in the music education field. Mee comes to the editorial board from a law background where she formerly served as director of Tennessee Department of Children’s Services Division of Evaluation and Monitoring. There she assessed the child welfare system, observed contracted services and best practice standards, and managed units comprised of up to 30 positions across the state. In October 2011, she was replaced because of the administration change at the state level. Since then, she has been a consultant, mediator and lawyer. Mee said she applied for this position because of her interest in equal rights. “I think that Out and About serves an important function in the community,” she said. “Working for the newspaper is consistent with my interest and experience in working toward social justice.” From 1988 to 2002, Mee worked as a human rights representative for the Tennessee Human Rights Commission. There she was responsible for resolving, investigating and enforcing state and federal anti-discrimination and civil rights laws related to employment and housing. “Based on my work in civil rights and anti-discrimination, I have a relatively good sense of the barriers faced by the GLBT community,” Mee said. “And I understand that people of all sexual orientations have the same basic interests, needs and wants.” Although her background is not in advertising, she has a connection to the GLBT community. “I have represented gays and lesbians in legal actions (including adoptions and harassment claims) and have investigated claims involving individuals facing discrimination of all types (including cases of transgender individuals),” she said. Two of Mee’s best friends are trying to have children via egg donationsurrogacy and she will be a godparent to one of the children. She also has advocated for anti-discrimination policies at the university level and supported other related causes. Mee is a fan of old classic movies like “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Casablanca.” She is part of the Colbertnation and also watches “The Daily Show.” Mee is also an avid reader and loves to go thrift-store shopping and antiquing. We are happy to have her on board. O&AN

What’s one item you can’t leave home without?

I know it’s cliche to say it, but my phone. In today’s world you’re able to do so much on a phone now...pay bills, video chat, turn your car on as well as your house lights, but any and everyone that know me will tell you that I’m addicted to instagram!

Boxers or briefs?

Briefs all the way boxers are so uncomfortable! If you won $1 million (tax free) and had to give half of it away, who would you give it to?

I’d have to split the half that I have and give a portion of it to my wonderful Mother, and the other portion to Breast Cancer Awareness in my boyfriend, Matthew’s Mothers name and honor.
