I hear that Bingham Cup VIII will have representatives from over forty teams, lengthening our list of participants with a new batch of fun names and logos. That’s mind-boggling. We started with six teams in 2002, as I remember. This is a chance for us to hobnob with our friends, new and old, on and off the rugby pitch. Mark used to call out—With you—as he ran alongside fellow rugby players advancing the ball up the pitch. Now Mark’s friends—black, brown, white, gay, straight, male, female—have come to Nashville united in their determination to play hard, to bring honor to themselves, to their teams, to Mark, and to all the beautiful souls lost September 11, 2001. Mark loved every part of rugby: the camaraderie, the competition, the glory of winning. Mark once told me something I’ll never forget. I can’t remember his exact words but his message was wise: Winning is great, but I learn more from losing. Losing gives my team and me a goal for next time. A PRIMER FOR THE RUGBY SPECTATOR michael a. kiggins
With the Bingham Cup coming to Nashville in just a few weeks, some might be wondering what exactly rugby is, and how it’s played. What follows is my quick attempt to explain this. Any mistakes are mine. Rugby, as a game, occupies a middle ground between soccer and American football, being played on a similarly sized field (which is called a PITCH), with H-shaped uprights, and using a ball that looks like a bloated cousin to the pigskin. In rugby, you can only pass the ball laterally or backwards, never forward. This is probably the hardest thing to pick up for players accustomed to American football. While you can pass laterally, well, you’re still safer passing backwards because the SIR, referees in rugby, may see the pass from a weird angle and think it has gone forward. In such cases, your team will lose possession. As in soccer, rugby uses LINEOUTS if the ball is kicked, carried, or otherwise knocked out of bounds (also known as “goes into touch”). Unlike in soccer, these line-outs are contested, with both teams lifting at least one player whose job it is to win possession of the ball. Also like in a soccer match, one may kick a loose ball down the pitch. There are also penalty kicks in rugby. These can result from high tackles or other egregious forms of play. Rugby does involve a lot of tackling. Though rugby players are not allowed to wear hard pads or helmets, there are soft torso and shoulder pads and “scrum caps” to protect the ears of those who play a certain position. This padding is thin and minimal, so the most protection players afford themselves is a lowly mouth guard. A key difference: we don’t tackle our opponents with our heads. Tackling someone or being tackled during a rugby match is not the end of that play, but merely the beginning of a new phase of play. Moreover, if you’re tackled and the person does not hold onto you, you can get back to your feet, step over the ball,

snatch it up, and keep running. Like life, rugby is about nothing else if not commitment. Once securely tackled, though, you will post the ball back toward your team, setting up the LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. Players from both sides have to approach that line through what is called THE GATE, which you establish based on the angle between your arms and legs when you post the ball. Now, if your teammates and opponents get to you at the same time, they’ll set up what’s called a RUCK atop you and the player(s) who tackled you. If possible, both of you need to get the f%#k out of the ruck ASAP because if you are on the ground, dear, you are the ground. That is, you can’t complain if you get cleated. Well, you can, but you’ll get no sympathy from the sir, who will be ordering you to “roll away.” Sometimes, the tackle is messy, involving more than two people, and you’re unable to roll away. In those times, when you can’t help but hear Bowie and Mercury sing about pressure, you’ll curl up in the fetal position, and cover your head with your arms while clenching your fists. Other times, though, you don’t get tackled but your forward progress is halted by opposing players. Your teammates will rush up and, with you still standing, surround you and try to push you against the other team and move the ball down the pitch. This is called a MAUL. The sir will be telling both teams as soon as the maul forms to “use it,” meaning they must move it one direction or the other, or he or she will “blow it up” by whistling and stopping play. At that point, a SCRUM will be called. This is probably the most recognizable formation on the rugby pitch. In a scrum, eight players from each team will get into a formation that looks like two half-huddles about to crash into each other. Each team will also have a player called a SCRUM-HALF, who is like a quarterback from football except not, because the

glory often goes to the faster guys whose hair never gets messed up (these people are known as BACKS). In any event, when the scrum begins, the scrum-half whose team has possession of the ball will feed it into the middle of the group. Hopefully, the person on his team known as the HOOKER will hook the ball backwards using his foot, so the scrum-half can feed it to the back-line. Once the backs get the ball, they will—again, hopefully—run north-south (that is, down the pitch, never side to side) and score. In rugby, that is not called a touchdown but a TRY. Unlike the touchdowns in football, you cannot spike the ball in the TRY ZONE (AKA, the end zone). Rather, you must touch the ball down with control. If you lose control of the ball, or if you spike it, you’ll cost your team that five points and will be penalized for a KNOCK-ON (this happens if you pass the ball forward or it bounces off your body anywhere above your knees). After you score a try, your team will get the chance to kick for two more points. Unlike football, this conversion kick must be in-line with where the try was scored. How far back you move the ball is up to you. Like football, you can use a tee, but you are also allowed to drop-kick for the conversion. At that point, the kicker will race back to his side of the pitch because the other team gets to decide when they will kick off to re-start play. Unlike football, the team that just scored receives the kick-off. And it begins again and continues until the forty-minute halves are up. After the game, players leave it all on the field, then drink up and commiserate with their former opponents, and find a common pitch in irreverence. There’s no better sport to demonstrate the sportsmanship of all involved. To see this, though, you’ll need to look beyond the blood, mud, and bruises.

ARC Amsterdam Lowlanders is the only gay and straight friendly Rugby Union team in the Netherlands. It is just over ten years old. What started off as a small but motivated initiative in 2003 has been a thriving Rugby Union team with a firm position and independent identity within their home at the Amstelveense Rugby Club (ARC) since 2008. That year, was also the first year they participated in the Bingham Cup and in 2012 they scored their first try. While in Sydney in 2014, they managed to get to the semi-finals and were awarded the Ben Cohen Stand Up Award for outstanding team sportsmanship in the game of rugby. The Lowlanders are overseen by a board, two coaches and are supported a large group of dedicated volunteers and (ex) players.

They are a diverse team of more than thirty men that truly represent the beautiful city of Atlanta. Beyond their commitment to playing the game they love, they also strive to give back to their community. This year they have supported Pride School Atlanta, a new communitybased school that supports LGBTQ youth and their families, and also Ready4Hope, an organization that helps to fund HIV/AIDS research.

On a lighter note, the Bucks love a good party, and they have hosted their fair share of bar nights, beer busts, and third halves since our last Bingham appearance: everyone loves a Buck Shot. Southern hospitality is alive and well in the ATL. They are debuting new jerseys at Bingham Cup, so be on the look out for their signature purple and antler crest and say hey y’all!

a Berlin-Bruisers.com f /BerlinBruisers The Berlin Bruisers were Germany’s first gay rugby team and formed in the Spring of 2012, fast becoming a prominent part of the Gay community in Berlin. They have marched in Gay Pride, marched against Putin and various cases of international persecution and injustice, and set up booths at all the various street fairs to recruit players and make a much bigger statement about inclusion, as well as having established a public platform to combat bullying and homophobia. Within four months of forming and with rookie players (who barely knew the rules) and with no one to play against, they took on themselves - and the rest of the rugby World - by attempting to set a new world record for the most Rugby passes in 3 minutes. Their effort paid off, and they still hold the title four years later! The team now plays in a straight league in Germany and has toughened up fast!
BIRMINGHAM BULLS
a birminghambullsrfc.com f /birminghambullsrfc Chairman: Raun Jones Captain: Andy Tsui Home Bar: Eden Bar, Birmingham The Birmingham Bulls RFC was set up by four friends, with the help of their ever supportive sponsors Eden Bar, as a rugby club based in the gay community of Britain’s second city five years ago. They’ve grown from just those four to a large club of almost fifty players and supporters that play other gay/inclusive sides around the UK along with clubs in and around Birmingham. From September this year they are taking the massive step of joining the Greater Birmingham merit league for 2016/17 season. The Bulls have won the inaugural season of the Turing Cup, a league set up at the beginning of 2015/16 season to include four IGR clubs, and which will hopefully expand next season. This July sees them host the 3rd installment of their touch rugby tournament, Touch my Brum.
BOSTON IRONSIDES

Boston Ironsides RFC holds a recruitment Boot Camp every summer, attracting both experienced players and men traditionally underrepresented in amateur sports. The Ironsides march annually in the Boston Pride parade and the Providence Pride festival, and have conducted diversity workshops at Massachusetts GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) conferences.

On Sunday, November 22, 2015 they held their first training session. Over twentyfive men attended the session, some with either past experience of rugby, league or union, others with no experience at all. Byron Todd who played rugby for 11 years for the Kings Cross Steelers RFC led the session - surely the first of many for an exciting new club!
BRISBANE HUSTLERS

After disbanding a few short years in 2007, the Hustlers regrouped in 2012 to compete in their first Purchas Cup, the Australian gay and inclusive rugby championship, and the local suburban league. A successful season, which saw the recruitment of some key Hustlers and Convicts veterans, kicked off the Club’s re-entry to competitive rugby union. A string of successes since 2012, including winning the Purchas Cup after 9 years of domination by the Sydney Convicts and coming second in Bingham, both in 2014, has seen the Hustlers grow to a club of over 50 experienced and new players.

Established in 2002 and based at Edinburghís BT Murrayfield Stadium, the Thebans are Scotland’s leading inclusive rugby club, with over 40 playing members. The Thebans have a long history of competition in inclusive tournaments and finished as runners-up in the Silver Plate final of the 2014 Union Cup. The club hosts an annual ërugby clinicí in Edinburgh, bringing over 200 players from across Europe to train with Scottish Rugby Union coaches and improve their skills. Off the pitch, this year the Thebans have raised money for Cahonas Scotland (cahonasscotland.com), a testicular cancer charity, while also trying to find a new mascot to replace Son of Bug**ery Bear, who was stolen by a rival club in Brussels. @O U T A N D A B O U T N A S H

Formed in 2012 by Frankie Brown, the Charleston Blockade Rugby Football Club became South Carolina’s first and only gay sports team. The Charleston Blockade plays teams in Southeast and has traveled across seas to Sydney Australia to compete in the 2014 Bingham Cup. The team has grown since their formation and has gone on to win in tournaments such as Ruck-A-Buck 2015 in Atlanta.

Last fall they held their inaugural tournament, the Queen City Crown, and they will be hosting their second annual tournament again this October. As the city that spurred recent discriminatory legislation in North Carolina, Charlotte strives to show the rest of our IGR family that the South is still a welcoming place to all walks of life, and they’re so happy to have this year’s Bingham Cup in the Southeast to help us reinforce that fact.

The Rush competes in the D3/D4 divisions of the Rocky Mountain Rugby union, as well as in International Gay Rugby (IGR). Rush Rugby has traveled to multiple IGR tournaments in the US, including Dallas Hellfest, Seattle Magnitude, and Ruck-a-Buck in Atlanta, where in 2015 the Rush advanced to a tournament final round for the first time in club history. The Warriors has become a household name within the community in Dublin, and compete annually within the IRFU Dublin Metro League. Their mission is to be the sports club of choice, attracting and encouraging lifelong membership from within and outside of our community. We found ourselves in decline in 2014, but a strong committee dedicated to keeping the club alive managed to turn things around and now we are back playing in the league with a load of fresh new faces. We are starting from the ground up, and though this is tough, our positive attitude and developmental atmosphere at training paying off.
GOTHAM KNIGHTS

Fifteen years ago, Gotham was founded with the initiatives of Mark Bingham and NY local rugby player Scott Glaessgen. On September 11, 2001, Mark was lost in the terrorist attack on United Airlines Flight 93 over rural Pennsylvania. The inspiration of Markís life, work and dedication to the sport of rugby led Scott and other New York City rugby players to meet in late 2001 to establish the Gotham Knights RFC. The Knights hosted the 2006 Bingham Cup and became the Cup champions in 2010, the last time the tournament was hosted in the US (Minneapolis, MN).
KINGS CROSS STEELERS
a kxsrfc.com f /KingsCrossSteelersRFC t @KXSteelers The Kings Cross Steelers was founded in 1 November 1995 by a group of rugby fans from the LGBT community who had at least one thing in common: a passion for playing rugby. They wanted to establish a rugby club that fostered an environment of inclusiveness and allowed them to play the sport they loved. The founding members met in a pub at King’s Cross in London, where the Club’s name derives from. The logo’s elephant seated on top of the castle is a nod to the Earl of Camden’s Coat of Arms It’s also said that “Steelers” was added as one of the founding members was a fan of the American Football team the Pittsburgh Steelers. Initially the Club played in the Surrey league, but with the full support of the Rugby Football Union, the Club was offered a permanent co-location at East London Rugby Football Club and a place in the Essex League. This relationship with East London RFC continues to this day, to the mutual benefit of both Clubs and the wider community of East London. @O U T A N D A B O U T N A S H

a larebellion.org /larebellionrugby f /rebellionrugby i Coach: Delyn Wi Repa Home Bar: The Eagle LA The Los Angeles Rebellion, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, was founded in 2001 by a group of rugby enthusiasts when they realized a major gap in representation within Los Angeles. From there the team has been a member of the local Southern California Rugby Football Union and 15 years later they are the only all-inclusive team within the Los Angeles and Orange County area. They are very active in the LA community participating in local pride festivals, supporting Miller Children’s Hospital every Christmas with a charity toy drive and also helping our fellow team mates organization, Peace Love Plates (PLP). They strive to be part of the community in forming relationships with other local gay affiliated sports clubs and also partnering with the LA Derby Dolls to build awareness in the area.
LISBON DARK HORSES
f /darkhorsesrugby t @darkhorsesrugby Coach: Filipa Jales Captain: Terry Martins The Dark Horses from Lisbon were established in September 2009 in a move to create a sports association whose main objective is the inclusion of all people through sport, regardless of their members’ sexual orientation, race, colour, religion. In 2010, a documentary on the team was made, which premiered in a queer film festival and had prime-time honours on Portuguese public television. The team, which currently has forty-one players, each year organizes a unique tournament in Europe, which mixes rugby in the pitch and on the beach. The weather, the food and the beach help make this an unforgettable weekend of sports and fun. Pitch Beach is definitely a “must go”.
MADISON MINOTAURS

The club has seen rapid growth in the last two years, reaching a record of 40 active players as of spring 2016. The Minotaurs have won three regional tournaments including the Toronto Beaver Bowl (2009 and 2011) and the inaugural Midwest IGR tournament in Chicago in 2011. The club has been very active in local AIDs related charities and was awarded the Volunteer Organization of the Year award by AIDS Network in 2013.

MADRID TITANES

In 2015, the Titanes became the first gay team to compete in the regular rugby league in Spain and currently has more than 50 active players. The team has also competed in a number of international tournaments, such as the 2015 Union Cup and 2015 Eurogames. Madrid Titanes will also host the 2017 Union Cup, the biggest European competition for gay inclusive teams, with hundreds of players from more than 20 teams. It is predicted to be the biggest rugby competition ever held in Spain, in number of competitors. As part of their social activism, Madrid Titanes has worked with different organizations such as Apoyo Positivo (HIV prevention & treatment) and Fundación 26 de Diciembre (elderly LGBT community), as well as Fundación Daniela (a group for transgender teens).

The club runs 3 men’s teams which will have the 1XV and 2XV playing in weekly competitive leagues from September 2016. The 1XV team were promoted in 2014/15 and are likely to be promoted again for 2015/16 meaning they will play in Division 3 of the Northwest Intermediate Rugby Union Leagues. History was made when Manchester and London played one another in the world’s first full contact rugby union game betweem inclusive clubs on 28th August 1999. The Spartans are one of the founding members of International Gay Rugby (IGR) and in 2012 the team hosted the Bingham Cup.

The Melbourne Chargers formed in 2009 with the purpose of creating a rugby team where new players could learn to play Rugby Union in an accepting environment and players who had left the sport because of their sexuality could play openly. The Melbourne Chargers made their international debut in 2010 fielding a joint team with fellow countrymen, the Sydney Convicts. In 2012 in Manchester, the team made the grand final for the Hoagland Vase in only their first appearance at the Bingham Cup under their Chargers banner. In Sydney in 2014, Chargers A Team won the Bingham Plate, the second tier of the competition and played out the game of the tournament against old foes, the Sydney Convicts. @O U T A N D A B O U T N A S H

Funnily enough, that isn’t a joke. Chatter about starting a rugby team of this kind started in the fall of 2004 and by November of that year the Mayhem were born. Since then, they have participated in every Bingham Cup and hosted the tournament in 2010.
NASHVILLE GRIZZLIES

By the time of their first organizational meetings, there were already a dozen or so guys interested. By the time the group was founded in 2006, those numbers had grown to levels that allowed the team to begin to compete with other clubs in the Southeast.

The young club attended its first Bingham Cup in Dublin in 2008, and hasn’t missed the tournament since. This year, the Grizzlies are hosting the Bingham cup in their tenth anniversary season, and they are excited to introduce the world of gay rugby to Tennessee’s crown jewel, Nashville.

In 1998, Wellington’s Krazy Knights became the nation’s first gay rugby team. The Ponsonby Heroes followed shortly, allowing for the nation’s first match between two local gay teams in October 1998. After a drought of gay rugby in New Zealand, some former members of these teams banded together to reestablish their sport and The Falcons was born.

Over the last 3 years they have continued to grow as a club and competed in a local league in the 2014/15 season. They were represented at the last Bingham Cup and also combined with Bristol Bisons for the 2015 Union Cup. They won the very first Touch My Brum tournament in 2014. This season they have moved grounds and are now located in Northampton town itself.

The Ottawa Wolves form a Rugby Football Club for men and women in Canada’s National Capital Region. The Club was founded by Carl Pilon and Jay Smidt in 2008 with the mission to promote and encourage participation in rugby among those who have traditionally been underrepresented in the game. The team members are predominantly part of the LGBTQA+ community, but diverse in its make-up, and inclusive of everyone. The club fielded its first side in the Eastern Ontario Rugby Union (EORU) Men’s Division II in 2009. That same year, the Wolves became a member of the International Gay Rugby association.

Months later, the happily motley crew played their first games during the annual Atlantic Cup, in Lewes, DE. Over the years and through different iterations, the team has become a tight cohesive group of gay men, bisexuals and allies whose love of spending time together is as strong as their love of playing rugby together. Their spouses and significant others are part and parcel of the revelry while alumni stay involved as integral members and mentors. Their drink ups are raucous and always attract the attention of the rest of the bar.

They call themselves a purposely-inclusive team, and they back that up with continued efforts to recruit gay members and support the LGBTQ community. In 2015, they finished 3rd in the Southern California Union’s Division 4, and in 2016 moved up to Division 3, where they have just finished their first season among some fierce competition, winning a few games along the way. Within the International Gay Rugby community, they have sent players to every Bingham Cup since 2008; Nashville will be the first time we are able to send a full team.
SAN FRANCISCO FOG
a sffog.org f /FogRugby The San Francisco Fog RFC, like so many, was born out of a frustration with the inability to find athletic opportunities where wasn’t a barrier. Founder Derrick Mickle moved to the Bay Area in 1998, having already given up on rugby, but while playing flag football with the San Francisco Piranhas, he met two other ex-ruggers, Mark Bingham and Jason Reimueller.

Internet research introduced Mickle to the small but emerging world of gay rugby teams. He contacted members of the Washington Renegades, and discovered that there was an untapped market for opportunities for gay athletes. Mickle recruited Cameron Geddes and Bryce Eberhart (both ex-college ruggers and both gay), and together they assembled interested players. By March 2000 there was a core of a dozen gay men interested in predominantly gay rugby team, by June 2000 the team name and colors had been chosen, and the United States’ second gay-friendly rugby football club was finally founded, officially in October 14, 2000.

The Berserkers is one of only a handful of IGR clubs to also have a women’s team. They represent the Washington D.C., area in Division III and Division IV rugby, and are members of USA Rugby, the sport’s national governing body, as well as of the Capital Rugby Union’s Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC). The Renegades’ Division III side are the 3-time defending champions of the Mid-Atlantic Conference Central Division. In 2014, the Club’s Division III side reached the national quarter/semi-finals, a first for an IGR-member club. They finished third in the Eastern United States, and fifth overall. The Club’s Division IV side also made two consecutive playoff appearances.

The Scandals frequently volunteer with their favorite charity, TeamDC. Money raised with this organization goes to support LGBT sports in the DC area and to provide scholarships to outstanding LGBT youth. The Scandals recently provided two models for one of TeamDC’s annual signature events, The Fashion Show and Model Search! Ryan Haynes and Rachid Louis from the Scandals strutted their stuff in swimsuits, underwear, fetish wear, and more placing 2nd and 3rd in this competitive event packed with talent!

In fact, the 2008 World Barbarians team, made up largely of the Nashville Grizzlies, beat the Sydney Convicts (B Team) in the Plate final.
OLD BOYS COMPETITION
f /binghamOldies The Old Boys competition at the Bingham Cup is for IGR’s “grizzled veterans.” Between jokes about replacing hearing aid batteries and calls for defibrillators, these long-time rugby players will form teams composed of guys from many different cities. Many IGR players have moved many times since the first tournament honoring Bingham in 2002, so they have already played for many different teams in the IGR family. Former IGR chairman Alex Fallis added “I played for many years and was president of Gotham Knights in New York, played with Dublin’s Emerald Warriors, and visited and played with virtually every IGR team while I chaired IGR. It’ll be great to see many old familiar faces. With an emphasis on ‘old!’” Despite the advancing years of the players, matches between Old Boys are traditionally scrappy and aggressive affairs, with former teammates wanting to prove to each other that they still “have it.” Fallis concluded: “This part of the tournament will be a great way for alumni to maintain contact with each other and the game they love.” @O U T A N D A B O U T N A S H

The Bingham Cup—the championship tournament of International Gay Rugby (IGR)— is named for Mark Bingham, a man his mother, Alice Hoagland, described as “a rugby player, a daredevil and a lover of life.” A former University of California Berkeley rugby star, Bingham was instrumental in the establishment of the San Francisco Fog Rugby Football Club (RFC)—just the second in the United States and one of the first few in the world. Sadly, just months after the Fog joined the Northern Californian Football Union, Bingham died heroically on United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. Bingham was raised in West Palm Beach and Miami, Florida, southern California, Monterey, and Silicon Valley: he graduated as captain of his rugby team

paper plates under his bed,” she said with a laugh. “As we were driving back, he was squirming in his seat … and I began to realize he was about to tell me something important.” Bingham told his mother that there was something he had promised himself he’d tell her before the sun went down. “The sun was going down,” she said, “and he started telling me about his life and his new roommate … very quickly, a whole bunch of words, and then ‘I am gay,’ and then a whole bunch of words, as if he was trying to sandwich it in unnoticed.” “I didn’t take it very well, and I’m ashamed of that now,” Hoagland admits. “I learned what a powerful gift he gave me sharing that with me, once I finally grew up! I used to tell

from Los Gatos High School in 1988. From there he went on to Berkeley, where he helped the Cal Bears rugby team take two National Rugby Championships. Hoagland admits that learning that her son, the rugby player and fraternity boy, was gay came as a surprise. “I was shocked when he came out to me,” she said. “It showed me how little I knew about my son, whom I thought I knew so well. When he told me, he announced it proudly…. It’s so clear in my mind, I remember the date and time.” “Mark invited me up to campus, so I went up and picked him up at the Chi Psi fraternity house. We drove out and had lunch at a lovely French restaurant! I was so pleased— he’d come so far from that high school kid stashing food on

him, ‘If you keep telling people you’re gay, everyone will know!’ I was so silly! Luckily I got over it quickly….” After college, Bingham worked with public relations firms in San Francisco and the South San Francisco Bay area in the 1990s, before finally organizing his own public relations company, The Bingham Group. On the morning of September 11, 2001, he was commuting to work on United Airlines Flight 93 between his New York and San Francisco offices, with plans to attend the wedding of a close friend. Always quick to jump to the aid of those in need, on that morning Bingham, together with a group of new allies, faced the most horrific challenge of his short life. They worked out a desperate plan to retake the cockpit from armed attackers who had murdered the pilots and were guiding the plane toward Washington, D.C., likely targeting the United States Capitol Building. Although unable to save their own lives, Bingham and his fellow passengers saved the Capitol Building and its occupants, including many members of the U.S. Congress. “On the afternoon of 9/11, I got a call back from a reporter who had spoken to me earlier in the day about Flight 93,” Hoagland recalled. “He asked me to confirm that Mark was gay, and I swallowed my tongue there for a minute…. But I realized how much Mark always wanted to be an asset to the gay community and how proud he was of it, so I swallowed hard, and I said, ‘Yes, he’s gay.’” “It was still uncomfortable, but he was a gay man, and that’s important. I think that’s what makes Mark such a welcomed figure. Mark of course didn’t know he was going to die on September 11, but I think he would be very honored by how the United States and the LGBT community remembers him,” Hoagland said. “It’s very gratifying to me as his mom to learn that the gay community looks to him as one of its heroes. I feel that the gay community and gay youth need more heroes they can identify with.” A few days after September 11, 2001 Senator John McCain spoke at a memorial service for Mark on the Cal Berkeley campus. Mark was posthumously lauded as The Advocate Magazine’s 2001 Person of the Year. Senator Barbara Boxer honored him in a ceremony for San Francisco Bay Area victims, presenting a folded American flag to Mark’s former partner. Singer Melissa Etheridge dedicated her song “Tuesday Morning” to Mark’s memory. The longest-lasting recurring event in Mark’s honor is the biennial Bingham Cup, IGR’s biennial international rugby competition, played predominantly by gay and bisexual men and women. It was first hosted by Mark’s team, the San Francisco

Fog, in 2002, and was named for their hero. “Back in 2002, I got a call from Chris Zerlaut, from the San Francisco Fog,” Hoagland recalled. “Chris asked me to come up to San Francisco around Mark’s birthday to participate in what amounted to Bingham Cup 2002. So I came up, and what a great time we had! There were six teams— the Fog, the Washington Renegades, Kings Cross, and a few others… They had a great time, and I had a great time…. I remember being carried off the field. I had no idea it would become a biennial tradition. Every year it gets bigger and bigger.” “You can imagine,” Hoagland added, “how excited I am to come to Nashville, as we bring rugby back into the United States.
I so look forward to catching up with teams and friends from all over the world!” Hoagland, too, has come to be honored at the Bingham Cup tournament: there is a Hoagland Division and prize. She is very humble about that honor, but she is very proud of how much she’s grown, thanks to her son and his rugby brothers. “For some reason,” Alice said, “I’ve become a very odd champion of gay rights…. I’m a Midwestern woman who, until my son confided in me, was vaguely anti-gay. I had a lot of growing up to do, and as usual Mark was the person who set me on that path. G IVI NG BACK TO TH E COM M U N IT Y SERVICE IS CORNERSTONE OF GAY RUGBY james grady
Anyone who is familiar with the Nashville Grizzlies, or their local LGBT or LGBT-affirming rugby team, knows that there’s a lot more to what they do than chasing balls, or even playing rugby…. International Gay Rugby (IGR) teams, and unaffiliated teams with similar values, hold a strong set of principles, the core of which is service to the community. That service takes many forms, the first and most obvious of which is the creation of an emotionally safe space for LGBT to participate in the not-safe-at-all sport they share a love of. Providing for this often unmet need in adult LGBT people is itself a basic service for which such teams should be commended. But LGBTaffirming rugby also challenges societal stereotypes both within and outside of the LGBT community, and provides role models for young or aspiring LGBT athletes. Far beyond the service provided by their very existence, however, the Grizzlies and their brothers around the world partner with other community (both LGBT and beyond) social and service organizations, becoming true pillars for the community. Nashville’s Grizzlies are often found supporting diverse causes, from Nashville’s arts scene to groups like Mr. Friendly and the Music City Sisters (especially if there is an opportunity to support them with partial nudity). It’s not unusual to see Grizzlies slipping out of one fundraiser early to get to another one on the same night! Hosting the Bingham Cup gives the team an opportunity to support a cause on a much larger scale, by naming a “Charity of Choice.” The Grizzlies have chosen the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network (TSPN) as the Charity of Choice of the 2016 Bingham Cup, a world championship of IGR. TSPN is a public-private
partnership of counselors, mental health professionals and community advocates dedicated to the goal of reducing suicide rates in the state of Tennessee. TSPN works across the state to eliminate mental health stigma and educate communities about the warning signs of suicide with the goal of reducing suicide rates. “For various reasons, LGBTQ people are more susceptible to suicide. They are subject to stressors such as bullying, discrimination, being closeted, and a lack of support from family and friends. Also, they often have less access to mental health resources,” said Scott Ridgway, TSPN’s Executive Director. “As the Charity of Choice, TSPN will have the opportunity to offer suicide prevention training to players and guests ahead of the tournament, helping to spread the message of suicide prevention across the U.S. and around the world.” Though there have been no empirical nation-wide studies on the occurrence of suicide among LGBTQ people, there is evidence that LGBTQ youths are significantly more susceptible to suicide and suicide ideation. Precise numbers vary, but studies suggest LGBTQ males are 55% more prone to suicidal ideation than their heterosexual counterparts. According to a 2001 study, LGBTQ youths surveyed estimated that roughly half their suicidal thoughts are connected to their sexual orientation. Furthermore, suicide attempts by LGBTQ youths tend to be more often result in death or serious. “We are very fortunate to have in Tennessee an organization that works with all people, including the LGBTQ community, to promote mental health resources and suicide prevention training,” says Jon Glassmeyer, chairman of the Bingham Cup organizing committee.
LGBTQ students are disproportionately more likely to be harassed or bullied on team sports and in PE class according to a study by the Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network, and, as a result, are underrepresented in school athletics teams. Gay and inclusive sporting events like the Bingham Cup can help break down stigmas that deter LGBTQ people from participating in team sports, and thus naturally help address some of the stressors that likely increase the chances a young person might become suicidal. Thus, TSPN is a natural fit for the Nashville Grizzlies, for Bingham, and for International Gay Rugby. People struggling with suicidal thoughts should seek help immediately. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number is +1-800-273-TALK (8255). Trained counselors are standing by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

SEATTLE QUAKE What a wholesome, all-America image of … wait a second! I bet Norman Rockwell was rolling over in his grave while those turkeys got stuffed!
MONTREAL ARMADA Armada went a different direction with their calendar, Full Contact, featuring the grittiness of the sport in high definition. It has a definite, hard-core, masculine sex appeal, but is different than many of its competitors. EMERALD WARRIORS The Emerald Warriors calendar is full of striking imagery: it’s bold, it’s rugby through and through, and at least some of it is super suggestive without being … well, what it suggests!
AMSTERDAM LOWLANDERS For 2016, the Lowlanders went with an all-nude calendar—The Edge of Amsterdam—which shows you the places you wouldn’t normally see; harbours, docks, train stations and racing circuits graced by our players in their birthday suit.

KING’S CROSS STEELERS These guys kept it classy for the most part, with their handsome lads in various states of athletic undress. Instead of a calendar, the Steelers teamed up with the famous zine Meat, published by Adrian Lourie (who also took the photographs) to produce a special issue featuring 29 players from the team’s 200-strong membership.

Last fall, the Nashville Grizzlies unveiled their steamiest fundraising tool of the year, their always anticipated calendar shot by local photographer Chris Malone: this years’ issue was shot in a real collegiate locker room! That’s right, just like in porn, but not fake! The highly sought-after calendar has been featured in gay blogs from around the world, including megablogs Towleroad and LGBTweekly.com! This brings us to the heart— of the beef—of the matter: if you watch the LGBT blogosphere, you know that the Grizzlies aren’t the only game in sexy calendar town. Lots of sports teams and clubs have taken to showing off the goods to raise money to cover operating costs and for charity: from the now-famous, ostensibly straight Warwick Rowers to Barcelona’s gay swim team, clubs somehow manage to keep selling calendars, even though almost no one uses them anymore. For keeping track of the days anyway. Rugby players in general, and gay rugby players particularly, are known for their general proclivity for stripping down, given the opportunity, so it’s not surprising that Gay rugby calendars remain a popular fundraiser. The teams involved in this year’s Bingham Cup have produced an impressive array of sexy sellables to cover their costs. We couldn’t even cover every team, but here is a selection: with a little research we bet you could collect them all! Sure the year is half over, but again, who keeps their schedule on a gay rugby team’s calendar? And, “Hey, will you sign your page in the calendar?” is a great line to use on an out-of-town player in the bar, right?

A GRIZZLIES GUIDE TO NASHVILLE’S BEST HOW TO EAT, DRINK, AND SIGHTSEE YOUR WAY ACROSS TOWN jeremy dykes
Whether you’re a country music fan or not, Music City has a lot to offer in terms of food, drink, and entertainment, as well as a little culture. And even if you’ve lived in Music City most of your life, you might get a kick out of seeing the best of your home town through the eyes of a man who has truly gotten around this city, the Nashville Grizzlies’ own Jeremy Dykes! DOWNTOWN Country Music Hall of Fame Nashvillians are quick to point out that our music scene is FAR more than country music…and that’s true. However, we ARE the home of country music and there’s no better place to get a taste of country’s roots than the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum. Tootsie’s Even in the middle of Lower Broadway’s neon glitter, it’s hard to miss the pink walls of Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, the grand matron of Nashville’s honky-tonk scene. Anyone who’s anyone in country music has probably signed the walls, and odds are good that one or two of ‘em will be in the crowd… and might even be talked into doing a song or two. Robert’s Western World A couple of doors down from Tootsie’s is Robert’s Western World, home of the coldest PBR & best fried bologna sandwich in town. (Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it!) Robert’s is usually packed, but the music is worth it. Honky Tonk Central So if you tell a local you’re going honky-tonking, don’t let ‘em know you’re going to Honky Tonk Central unless you want to hear a nice Southern ‘Bless your heart’…we’ll all be quick to tell you the place is not a REAL honky-tonk. That said, it IS a really fun place to grab a beer and hear some of Music City’s great cover bands…and the balconies overlooking Broadway & 4th are a great for hanging out &
watching the tourists go by. MIDTOWN Tin Roof When it’s time to get away from the tourists on LoBro, midtown is where to start. A great strip on Demonbreun St. is anchored by Tin Roof, a laid-back live music joint featuring some of Nashville’s finest musicians and some great food to munch on while you’re there. (The cheese dip is AMAZING!) Parthenon Across West End Ave. from Vanderbilt sits one of the gems of Nashville, Centennial Park. The heart of Centennial Park is the Parthenon, the only full-scale replica of the ancient temple in Athens. (We like to say ours is better because it’s not falling apart.) First built as part of Tennessee’s Centennial Exposition in 1897, the Parthenon is a nod to our nickname of the ‘Athens of the South’ due to the large number of colleges & universities in the area. Hog Heaven On the edge of Centennial Park, in a kinda seedy looking cinderblock building, sits Hog Heaven BBQ, another of Nashville’s best spots for slow-cooked goodness. Get whatever meat floats your boat, just make sure to cover it in their ‘Kickin Chicken’ white sauce. THE GAYBORHOODS (CHURCH STREET AND 2ND/4TH AVENUE) Tribe The center of gay life in Nashville is Church St, and the foundation of Church St. is Tribe. Video screens hung around the bar play the latest gay-fave videos (including Showtunes Sunday to finish the weekend with a bit of song & dance) while the hot crew of bartenders craft some of the finest cocktails in Music City. Have Stephen make ya a Zelda. (Sorry Stephen!) Play If Tribe is Church’s foundation, Play is its beating heart…and the beat is
THUMPIN’. The Playmates put on the hottest show in Nashville in Play’s drag bar while the best DJs in Music City get your feet moving with the sickest beats around. Bring plenty of singles for tipping the queens! Canvas If your preferred gay scene tends more toward the eclectic, head up the street to Canvas Lounge. Part art gallery, part lounge, part music venue, and part dance club, Canvas pours strong, plays loud, and boasts one of the hottest bar staffs in town. BTW…the art on the walls is for sale, take an Arthur home with ya! Clyde’s A newcomer to Church St.’s evergrowing scene, Clyde’s On Church is a fantastic place for a prebarhopping dinner. Foosball, pingpong, and shuffleboard also make Clyde’s a great spot to camp out for the whole evening. Stirrup …so not ALL of Nashville’s gay scene resides on Church St. A quick Uber ride south will land you at the Home of the Grizzlies Third Half, Stirrup. An unpretentious neighborhood bar, Stirrup is the direct descendant of Nashville’s much-missed Chute Complex (may it rest in peace.) Timmy & the boys serve up cold beer, strong drinks, & some great grub if you get the munchies. EAST NASTY Edley’s Bar-B-Que Another of Nashville’s many kickass BBQ joints is Edley’s BarB-Que in East Nashville. With a wide range of beers, some of the best pulled pork in town, and an amazing space for al fresco dining, Edley’s is a Grizzlies post-practice favorite. Pepperfire Hot Chicken We’ve been telling y’all about Nashville Hot Chicken from the start of the Bingham bidding process & Pepperfire in East
Nashville is my favorite in a long list of tongue-blistering peppered poultry. They’re one of the few hot chicken joints that serve their fowl as tenders (in addition to on-thebone), which is useful when one wants to avoid getting napalm on one’s fingers. 3 Crow There’s no finer place to be for Sunday Funday in Music City than the patio at 3 Crow Bar in East Nashville. The beer is cold (and 2-4-1), the bushwhackers are colder, and the people-watching can’t be beat. Mad Donna’s A couple of blocks from 5 Points, Mad Donna’s offers one of the best burgers around…but they’re most famous for their brunch. The French toast crusted with Cap’n Crunch is not to be missed and you can wash it down with 2-4-1 mimosas or hit the Bloody Mary bar. Lipstick Arguably the best spot for karaoke in Nashville (and Music City takes karaoke VERY seriously), the Lipstick Lounge is a frequent Grizzlies haunt. Depending on what night you show up, you might find triva, Family Feud, or some great live music. (Tell Mags we sentcha!)
