TEP announces Equality Means Business O&AN STAFF REPORTS

It was business as usual with Tennessee Equality Project (TEP) when TEP Foundation President, H.G. Stovall, announced Equality Means Business, a brand-new business driven initiative to show Tennesseans that equality makes economic sense. Equality Means Business circle members serve their customers regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, do not discriminate against their employees based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and agree that pro-equality laws are good for business in Tennessee. “We hope to encourage our state’s leaders to stay focused on issues that

really affect the business climate in Tennessee. Allowing truly businessfriendly policies to be held captive by those with personal agendas is bad business,” said Stovall. The program is absolutely free for businesses. TEP provides a small window sticker for businesses that want to show their support for equality. TEP will also regularly update the list of supportive businesses on their Facebook page and website. Currently several area businesses, including Palmer Solutions and Suite One Salon, have shown that their businesses’ support equality.

Marriage Equality Impact Map February 2014 1 Utah

In late December, U.S. District Court Judge Robert Shelby ruled that Utah’s same-sex marriage ban was unconstitutional. Since the Utah Attorney General’s office had neglected to request a stay on the order, more than 1,000 Utah same-sex couples were married. The Supreme Court eventually granted a stay on the ruling in early January. Currently the case has been kicked back to the Tenth Circuit Appeals Court. The last briefs in this case before arguments are due at the end of February.

2 Oklahoma

1

In a case that has been pending since 2004, U.S. District Court Judge Terence Kern ruled that Oklahoma’s marriage ban violated both the equal protection and due process rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution in mid-January. Unlike Utah, the ruling was immediately stayed.

2

Tennessee

Following surprise decisions in Utah and Oklahoma, attorney Abby Rubenfeld, counsel for the plaintiffs in a Tennessee case involving recognition of out-of-state marriages, told reporters that she was encouraged by the rulings. Rubenfeld also said that she is awaiting ruling on injunction that would immediately recognize the marriages of the four couples involved in the case and that she was expecting that ruling any day. Rubenfeld was not available for further comment. For more on the Tennessee case, visit outandaboutnashville.com

ROBERT BURCHFIELD & JOSHUA HAWKINS

urrently same-sex couples in Tennessee cannot be legally married. But that isn’t stopping committed couples from going to other parts of the US (and world) to say “I Do.” Currently Gay Faves lawyer Abby Rubenfeld, along with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, are fighting for out-of-state marriages to be recognized by Tennessee. In the meantime, meet some O&AN readers who have been married:

BEST RELATIONSHIP STORY/MEMORY:

One night, after we had been dating for a few years but before we were married, my husband needed to do some laundry and so we headed out to a laundromat in West Nashville. While the clothes were washing we sat in the laundromat and read each other stories out of the local newspaper and talked about nothing in particular. Nothing too special but we really enjoyed just getting to spend some time together. The first time we celebrated Valentines Day after our wedding we grabbed up a bunch of our dirty clothes and headed out to the same laundromat. What makes our relationship great is being able to appreciate the most simple and basic parts of it.

WEDDING TALE:

WEDDING TALE:

We flew to Baltimore MD and rushed to the courthouse to get our Marriage License. There was a 48 hour waiting period before the ceremony. Nicole’s parents went with us to the court house, Michelle’s parents were unable to fly to join us. As we waited for our turn to get hitched, we were a nervous wreck. Michelle was pacing up and down a hall and Nicole was looking like she was about to pass out. It wasn’t as if we just met and we didn’t know each other. Over nine years we have dealt with many things, new jobs/careers, selling/purchasing a home and Nicole’s health issues of becoming a heart attack survivor at 33! We have handled it all! But we were just nervous and then during the wedding ceremony we were emotional. Then for several weeks after we just couldn’t believe we are married. After three months we are still shocked about being married.

L

et’s be real here: gay bars are not for everyone. And while it’s wonderful that Nashville has great spaces for queer folks to get their groove on, sometimes one just wants to grab some friends, cut a rug, and not have to find parking on Church Street. Enter QDP: a Queer Dance Party of Nashville’s very own. QDP is a regular monthly dance party at The 5 Spot in East Nashville. QDP features a dance floor and great DJs who “always strive to play your jam and get you on your feet,” says the QDP committee, made up of Alex Caress, Jordan Caress, Ashley Cole, Jason Harris, Keith Johnson, Tiffany Minton, Rachel Rogers, & Laura Taylor. In fact, the committee says, “We intentionally leave the stage clear as part of the dance floor during QDP, because we feel it makes the party seem more about the people that are dancing than it does about the DJs. “ Dancing is in QDP’s DNA, but there are also spaces to sit and talk, as well as a photo booth. At every QDP, the photo booth has excellent photographers, different handmade backdrops, and fresh new props. “We’ve been lucky to have amazing talented photographers at our photo booth,” says the committee. “We usually have Steve Cross working his magic behind the camera, but we also love Diana Lee Zadlo and Jonny Kingsbury (from Generation Domination). We have the most fun after every QDP looking through the photos and seeing new faces, seeing the regulars up their photo booth game… it’s very exciting.” After each QDP, photos spread like

NOT DANCING ON OUR OWN wildfire over social media. “Photos are our best form of advertising,” the committee explains. “Browsing through the pictures on Facebook shows how much fun people are having and social media makes it easy to share those photos, thus the word spreads naturally.” Besides the monthly dance parties, QDP also throws parties on special occasions like Halloween and Pride. Last year, QDP hosted the Nissan Local Stage at Pride, which featured bands like Tipper Whore, Catfight, Heidi Burson, Mr. Trout, and Carol Plunk. They also threw kick-off and after-parties. “Our first year at Pride we just walked around in a small group with a boom box dancing to Robyn and passing out flyers, so we’ve come a long way,” the committee says with a laugh. “We were so stoked to be included in Pride last year and are already talking about how we can be involved this year, though we don’t have any specific details we can share just yet.” Last year, QDP hosted the first-ever QDProm: a huge event with live bands, DJs, and a terrific Robyn flash mob. “Throwing a big queer prom was a dream for us early on,” the committee says. “We can’t believe we did it after only a year and we can’t wait to do it again!” This year’s QDProm is February 15 at Mercy Lounge. The committee is tight-lipped about what’s in store this year, but they promise another party band and more time for QDP DJs. Like the 2013 QDProm, this year’s event is 18+. “We love to have 18+ events,” the committee says. “Any time we can have an event that allows younger people to be there, we do. We definitely think it’s important for queer youth to have a similar safe space like the one we’ve created with QDP.” To that end, QDP keeps the

be,” the committee says. “There are always opportunities for improvement and we hope to continue to foster an environment of inclusion and care for our QDPeople in a traditionally straight environment.” Indeed, most of QDP’s events do not take place in gay or lesbian bars. “Although we all love Blue Gene’s karaoke, catching a drag show at Play, or a wild night at Lipstick, we feel like we shouldn’t have to go to a gay bar to feel comfortable dancing with whomever we want,” says the committee. “Our mission is to take over a typically straight venue and make it a queer space for the night - a place where anyone can feel safe, respected, and free to bust a move.” “It’s great to see the confused looks on the faces of regular 5 Spot patrons when they try to figure out why there are men in the women’s bathroom,” continues the committee. “Having our party at a bar that isn’t a gay bar shows that we are a part of the fabric of Nashville and we can be accepted and welcomed without being separated from everyone else.” PHOTO CREDIT: STEVE CROSS

admission to their monthly party just $1 and are committed to local organizations supporting the queer community. In December, QDP donated their profits to Just Us, a program at Nashville’s Oasis Center that provides support and advocacy for LGBTQI high school students. Says the committee, “We really appreciate the work they do.” They’ve also donated to Rock Camp, IDA’s Work Hard/Stay Hard organization, and had a fundraiser for one of their loyal party-goers who was hospitalized after a hit-and-run bike accident. “We are grateful that our party has put us in this position to be able to contribute to causes we care about,” explains the committee. “We hope to provide more donations to deserving groups in the coming year; we really look forward to that part of our organization growing.” QDP’s growth is partly due to its ability to adapt and improve. “Through alterations like genderneutral bathrooms and posting our “QDProtocol” - a short FAQ we created last year - we keep tweaking the party to make it the best it can

Alex Caress, Jordan Caress, Ashley Cole, Jason Harris, Keith Johnson, Tiffany Minton, Rachel Rogers, & Laura Taylor

What started off as a small monthly dance party has expanded into an important force for good in Nashville’s queer community. “QDP grew more quickly than we ever could have anticipated,” the committee says. “Our heads are always spinning with new ideas and possibilities. We really want to ramp up our online presence. We would love to throw different kinds of parties, bring queer dance acts and artists to Nashville, raise money for local organizations… any excuse to throw more parties, because we like to party.” It all comes back to having a great party for QDP. “We just concentrate on throwing the kind of parties that we would like to attend,” says the committee. “We consider ourselves incredibly lucky that other people enjoy the same things we do.” Connect with QDP on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and the QDP website: queernashville.com. QDProm will be held February 15 at Mercy Lounge. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Buy tickets at bit.ly/QDProm14

WKU student celebrates first anniversary of Queerability JOSEPH BROWNELL

After coming out as bisexual and living with autism, Western Kentucky University student Kristen Guin was left searching for a place to belong. On one hand, she identified with the LGBT community, but on the other, there was a void of conversation about the intersection of LGBT and disabled identities. That’s when Guin decided she needed to create a space for herself and others like her and Queerability was born.

Out in Front allows peers from across the state to share resources, develop leadership skills, and foster a strong community of LGBTQI and allied student leaders and is Guin has spoken at WKU as well as OCALICON, a national disability conference in Ohio. “When I spoke at OCALICON, I had two instances that let me know that what Queerability has done and continues to do is needed. One was when a professional who works

with people with disabilities came up to me and tell me that her students used Queerability to find people like them and know that they aren’t alone, and the other was when a lesbian told me that I helped her see that her son, who was just recently diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, has a future.” Out in Front is just one step in Queerability and Guin’s future as she recently announced plans to turn Queerability into a 501(c)3 non-profit

LGBTQ and disability right advocacy organization by 2015. While Out in Front is open to students and faculty, community volunteers can register online to attend at vanderbilt.edu/lgbtqi/programs/outin-front. See more information in the O&AN Calendar. Connect with Queerability on Tumblr (queerability.tumblr.com), Facebook and Twitter (@Queerability).

inspire. engage. evolve. Equality Gala 3.8.14

“I started Queerability after hearing a large portion of people from the LGBTQ and disability communities talking about how they wish there was a space for them in the conversation surrounding being LGBTQ and disabled,” Guin shares. Guin set out to harness the power of social media to let others know that they, too, belonged somewhere and that their voices should be heard. “On a personal level, Queerability has been very rewarding for me. I, myself, felt alone,” Guin says. “I am Autistic and I didn’t know that other Autistic and otherwise disabled LGBTQ people like me existed until I came onto websites like Tumblr and started Queerability.” Celebrating the one-year anniversary of Queerability last month, Guin is bringing her workshop entitled “Queerability: The Intersection of Disability and LGBTQ” to Vanderbilt University’s Out in Front, Saturday February 8.

Jennifer Nettles is ‘That Girl’ JOSEPH BROWNELL

Even before topping the country charts as one-half of the duo Sugarland and winning the 2008 ACM and CMA Song of the Year Award, as well as that year’s country Grammy, for the ballad “Stay,” Jennifer Nettles was that girl. Cutting her teeth on the local Georgia music scene, Nettles’ voice and personality has always been bigger than the country music box that inevitably came with performing in the genre. Die-hard fans remember New Year’s Eve shows at Atlanta’s Eddie’s Attic, Soul Miner’s Daughter shows in Statesboro and Jennifer Nettles Band rewinding at The Roxy in Atlanta, as well as Nettles’ lyrical grittiness and captivating stage presence. While Sugarland seemed to soften some of Nettles’ edges, you only have to look back at 2010’s Incredible Machine to see that Nettles and company were being inspired and moved by music other than country. Enter That Girl, the first major-label solo album for Jennifer Nettles.

For the album’s flamenco-flavored lead single (and title track), Nettles teamed up with Atlanta-area native Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, P!nk). The result is a somewhat odd single choice but entirely catchy homage/response to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” whereas Nettles’ sings she doesn’t want to be the other woman, or “that girl.”

So who is Jennifer Nettles and where do the tracks on her album put her in context of today’s musical landscape? Much like the Dixie Chicks, who were searching for their musical identity in 2006, Nettles turned to Rick Rubin to help flush all that out. The result finds Nettles treading a thin line between folk-pop, country

and adult-contemporarywhich to some die-hard fans has proven to be a bit of a let-down. The album kicks off with “Falling,” the best song about loss of innocence since Deana Carter slayed country radio with “Strawberry Wine.” With publicity performances of the track during album release week, this is guaranteed (rightfully so) to become a smash hitfor Nettles.

Other album highlights? Nettles pens “This One’s For You” with Sara Bareilles. Its laid back, piano-driven tune sounds like a session extension of the latter’s “Manhattan.” Nettles’ also hits a high note with ballad “Me Without You,” although at times the song could benefit from a more restrained vocal. Nettles knows her way around a

ballad, but it’s the upbeat tracks where Nettles’ displays her tongue-in-cheek wit. On “Jealousy” Nettles sings ““I didn’t really mean to cause such an ugly scene / Showing up at your house, half-drunk and crazy / Bitch, I called you out,” and never has the little green monster been so much fun. Nettles also examines our current celebrity obsession on the Richard Marx assisted “Know You Wanna Know” and our nation’s fast-paced technological dependence on “Moneyball.” All three tracks shine, but after repeated listens. The album’s one disappointment is the snoozer “Thank You.” Co-written with Little Big Town’s Phillip Sweet, the track could’ve been included as a bonus track instead of “His Hands.” “His Hands,” is a heartbreaking tale of domestic violence that begs for a video treatment and release to country radio. It’s quite easily one of Nettles’ most convincing performances since “Stay,” and the best song on the albumthe deluxe iTunes version, that is. Some might claim that marriage and motherhood have softened Nettles, and, sure, gone are the “red starfish and blue lizard tails,” but what’s left is a mature woman who still has one of music’s most engaging voices. Catch Jennifer Nettles at The Ryman on February 20. Also enter to win That Girl at outandaboutnashville.com

because here’s the only person I’ve ever known as both a Country and Christian artist, but when I asked her about her being a Christian artist, she was very quick to correct me. “I don’t know where that rumor got started, that I was a Christian artist. I have recorded inspirational tracks, but I’ve never truly considered myself a Christian artist.” I was quite surprised by this, but she then started talking about how most of the people she has ever been hurt by have usually done it under the guise of religion. She’s even taken several steps to keep the upcoming conference out of a religious context. Initially the project was going to be called “The Red Tent

Resurrection:

Stella gets her groove back

ERIC PATTON

Every so often, you should do something that completely takes people by surprise. Whether you date someone outside your normal type, jump out of an airplane or swim with sharks—who cares as long as it’s something that no one expects from you. In Stella Parton’s case, she’s just released Resurrection, a new dance album that remixes several of her previous songs, along with a couple new ones. Yes, that Stella Parton. More than Dolly’s little sister, Stella Parton is not only celebrating the release of Resurrection but also her upcoming Red Tent Women’s Conference, scheduled to take place in Nashville April 18-20. I sat down with Stella and her personal assistant at the Pinewood Social Club over on Peabody last month to talk about her new album as well as past and future projects. “I just wanted to have some fun,” Stella admits about the record’s origins.

22

She says it was “divinely given” to her and she wanted to do it because it was fun for her to try on a new persona. Hoping to travel and perform in clubs across the US, Stella promises that she’ll never have the same hair twice. In fact, Stella says, “My hair’s gonna be so jacked to Jesus there’ll be an angel choir singing backup”. When asked if she was trying to do something similar to Cher, Stella got downright giddy. “I’ve always loved Cher and Tina (Turner). I would be honored to be mentioned in the same breath with them. They are true originals and two of my favorite artists.” The tracks collected and remixed on Resurrection make a seamless transition from their country-pop roots to the dance floor. “Saving My Love” haunts with its dark beat—a far cry from the upbeat, guitar-driven bounce of the original. But in the same listen, the remix sounds like the song was meant to be this way. Stella is no stranger to genre experimentation. At first, I was skeptical

Revival” but Stella says she wanted it to be more about women’s empowerment than about church. Thus, “The Red Tent Women’s Conference.” Sitting down with Stella was like watching a master class. She is incredibly brilliant and such a firecracker. She quoted her sister, “Dolly always says, ‘don’t ask Stella what she thinks, she’ll tell ya!’” And I have a feeling from the hour I spent with her, that’s every bit of the truth. Resurrection is currently available on Stella Parton’s website, stellaparton. com. 2014 event /tour appearances will be posted soon. Connect with Stella Parton on Facebook and Twitter.

‘VanIvy’ proves love is not a drag

Vanity Ivy JOSEPH BROWNELL AND PAIGE TURNER

It’s not uncommon in Tinseltown that celebrity power couples are saddled with a made-up moniker that’s often a blend of their names. So it should come as no surprise that drag power couple Known as Vanity and Ivy St. James, who both recently auditioned and earned spots on the casts at Tribe and Play, would eventually receive their title: VanIvy. In 2012, Vanity and Ivy were introduced through Vanity’s sister-inlaw; their connection was immediate. “[Vanity] is a religious person. Having grown up with ministry parents and having religious views myself, that was something I wanted to find in a partner,” Ivy shares. “That really stood out to me about him as a person . . . but of course his blue eyes, which I could stare into all day every day.” With piercing blue eyes, long legs and long blonde hair, Vanity could easily intimidate nearly anyone when walking into a room but it was a “wave of intimidation” upon meeting Ivy that sticks out most in Vanity’s memory. “It was very intimidating to me to see someone so bold and out there . . . I was very intrigued.”

24

Saddled with a past, Ivy credits Vanity’s maturity and willingness to look beyond all of that for making their relationship work in its initial stages. And Vanity agrees. “It’s called a past for a reason, there is no reason why it should affect now.” Now, after nearly two years together, the two performers navigate their way day to day through many levels of their relationship—on and off the stage. “When Van and Ivy are a couple and out together, it’s a different type of relationship,” Vanity admits. “I feel like we’re more loving as boys than we are as girls.” Both strive to keep their drag personas separate from their “boy selves.” “It’s very hard sometimes to keep Van and Ivy separate from Josh and Hunter,” Vanity admits. “If Josh and Hunter are having a rough day, which are very few and far between, but have to be in drag that night, as soon as we get painted, we’re done. We’re totally two different people.” While Vanity is pursuing drag as her full-time career, Ivy does it more as a hobby. “I know when she is out, she

OUTANDABOUTNASHVILLE.COM

F E B R U A R Y 2014

needs to be promoting,” Ivy says. “I’m not hanging on saying ‘you need to be my girlfriend.’” You might assume that dating a fellow performer would also double your wardrobe but not for VanIvy. “Sharing the shoes would be great, but we can’t do that because her feet are bigger than mine,” Vanity jokes. “I also try not to share her hair because she’s red-headed and I like the red lipstick.” While they do give each other advice and work together, their roles are clearly defined. “She’s the makeup queen and I’m the hair queen,” Ivy laughs.

Through it all, Vanity and Ivy credit one another for where they are today. Ivy, who sees herself more as the taskmaster, fully supports Vanity’s career and whether she herself is performing or not, is there backstage helping her partner (and other queens) do their best. VanIvy sums it up best, speaking on top of one another, concluding the interview, “Whether it’s as Van and Ivy or Josh and Hunter, we wouldn’t be where we are today.” And as the queen pursuing a fulltime career, Vanity has the last word, “I wouldn’t have the beauty I have if it wasn’t for her.” Isn’t love beautiful?
