doing IN FIVE YEARS? It’s one of those questions you expect to be asked at a job interview. You know the ones ... you know it’s coming, you can see it on the interviewers face. Mayor of.. LAZYTOWN WARNER’S CORNER DAVE WARNER Star 102.7

I’m quite often referred to as ‘the skinny chain smoking alcoholic’, a very charming, albeit very long nickname. Coined by a good mate’s angry wife many years ago after we fell through his front door with the sun coming up at the conclusion of yet another epic night out in Cairns at pretty much everywhere. A flippant comment one might consider slanderous - if it wasn’t so bloody true. I didn’t hold a gun to his head and pour tequila down his throat, nor did I lose his keys, his wallet, his phone or his left shoe. I also didn’t make him remove his pants upstairs at Gilligan’s and I certainly didn’t squish his tackle up against the glass windows that overlook the main hall, but I did make him apologise to the bouncer who kindly ‘evacuated’ us from the building following his third warning. However I do accept that I am an accessory to wrecking the productivity of her weekend by delivering a now useless husband who’ll spend the next two days on the couch in his underpants bingeing on Star Wars.

and Dry with the odd Dry Martini thrown in for a bit of balance. The results were ‘staggering’ (pardon the dad’s joke) and all things considered, it was a piece of piss (pardon the pun). I am so doing it again next year! The only real side effect was that my Lazy Gene flared up a bit. It was my turn to make dinner and I’d decided on Taco’s, because they don’t require a lot of time and effort and would allow me to spend more time doing my favourite thing; which is nothing, I love doing nothing. So I was running through the ingredients in my head and knowing that my wife had been to Rusty’s on the weekend I called her at work to ask if we had any capsicums at home. After confirming that we did indeed have some in the veggie crisper she asked where I was and what I was doing - I should have lied. ‘I’m right in the middle of doing nothing… sitting on the back deck with a beer… at home’. It was unambiguously pointed out to me that I am without doubt the unopposed Mayor of LazyTown - a man who calls his wife at work to ask what’s in the fridge, a fridge that is no more than 5 metres away from him, because he couldn’t be bothered getting out of his chair. I must say, I wear the mayoral robes well.

Nicknames are based in truth and all 10 syllables of mine inspired me to take a bit more responsibility for my health and wellbeing, so I’m proud to announce I’ve just completed my very first Dry July. For a With my first Dry July done and dusted I’ve now whole month I consumed nothing but Carlton Dry, set my sights on a much bigger challenge; ‘Don’t Toohey’s Extra Dry, Hahn Super Dry, Canadian Club Remember September’. Bring. It. On.

David Williamson’s MONEY AND FRIENDS Someone once said, “You can ask a friend for anything – except money”. Perhaps David Williamson, Australia’s most prolific playwright, was thinking this when he penned Money and Friends in 1991. This biting satire, directed by Paul Hynes, is the latest Rondo Theatre offering, opening on 13 September. The play is set in a fictional holiday retreat south of Sydney during the recession of the early 90’s, a place of refuge and relaxation for Sydney’s rich and famous. Margaret, who is neither rich nor famous, is our narrator and she introduces her “tribe” of friends, who are again together for drinks on a lazy summer afternoon. Her affable best friend and confidante Peter is playing host on this afternoon as the rest of the assorted group arrive: Conrad, the pretentious environmentalist/TV host with his inflated view of the sexual allure of wealth, and his latest (pregnant) wife, Jaquie, who is suitably cynical of her husband’s opinions; the melancholy orthopaedic surgeon Stephen with his polar opposite wife, the effervescent Penny, who would love a holiday free of Stephen’s doom and gloom; and Alex, ruthless Sydney lawyer whose ambitions are not always supported by his glamorous wife, Vicki, herself preoccupied with climbing the social ladder, and considering leaving her husband for a Hollywood producer.

When Peter confides in Margaret that he is about to lose everything due to a debt brought on by his brother’s bankruptcy, Margaret urges Peter to ask his wealthy friends for help. Peter is too diplomatic to take this step, so Margaret does it for him - and gets only a lukewarm response. In the meantime, Margaret tells Peter that she has been stood-up by the latest in her line of young lovers, Justin. As it turns out, Justin is Conrad’s estranged son, and when he finally arrives on the scene the coincidence reveals some awkward truths. The various conflicts are played-out in the second half of Money and Friends, and, as Margaret observes at the end, “life’s patterns are seldom neat”. The ensemble cast of local actors do a fine job of bringing the motley “tribe” to life, and Williamson’s famous one-liners deliver the laughs guaranteed in a Rondo Theatre comedy.

People AT WORK WITH RHYLEE HENSLER | SPILLING THE BEANS ON BUSINESS MILESTONES | CAROL SWEATMAN | MY CAIRNS CONCIERGE

Sometimes dreams really do come true, and that is certainly the case for 20-year-old Cairns local, Rhylee Hensler. In 2017, Rhylee was offered an eight-month contract to dance at the world-famous Parisian cabaret, Le Moulin Rouge. Two years on, Rhylee is still dancing up a storm in the City of Light! We had a chat with Rhylee to find out what life is really like working at the most famous cabaret in the world. Tell us a little bit about your dance background, and your life growing up? I feel very blessed to have grown up in Cairns. It’s a very relaxed lifestyle. I have two brothers and one older sister and we all played sport. The boys mainly played rugby league, my sister played soccer, and I tried everything! Soccer, Aussie rules, touch football, basketball, and cheerleading. I started cheerleading for the Cairns Taipans, in the mini squad, when I was eight years old. Dancing soon became my thing when I started ballet, tap, and jazz at Turning Pointe Dance Studios. I was selected to join the Australian Ballet School’s interstate program, travelling to Melbourne once a year for a week of intense training. Ballet was my passion and I pursued it further when I was 16, moving to Sydney to take up a place with the Tanya Pearson Academy full time. Moving away from my family was hard. I was there for eight months but I decided it wasn’t what I wanted to do full time so I packed up and moved home. I found a job in a law firm and I was happy working 9-5.

AT WORK WITH...

Rhylee Hensler

I saw that the Moulin Rouge was holding auditions in Cairns and it was the first time they were offered outside of a capital city. I auditioned and I made it through to the end. Janet Pharaoh, the artistic director, sent me home with an information booklet outlining everything about the show. Several months went by and one morning I woke up to an email from Janet asking me what my plans were for the next three months. I was then offered a contract for eight months. I am now nearly two years in and loving it. What motivated you to choose the Moulin Rouge for your professional career? I have always loved the showgirl style and I had heard so much about the Moulin Rouge growing up that it really was a dream if I got in. Had you ever been to Paris before you moved for this contract? No, I had never been to Paris before I moved. It was a very big culture shock when I did move. The lifestyle here is completely different to Australia. Which is your favourite dance to do or costume to wear? This is a hard one! I love so many but the French Can Can is definitely my favourite. This dance is known for high kicks and jump splits. It has so much history behind it. It’s such an honour to dance the Can Can.

What is your best advice for someone who would like to audition for the Moulin Rouge? DO THE AUDITION! You just never know where this job could take you. Just breathe and have fun in the audition. They like personality and someone who Tell us about the different levels you can progress is confident. Make sure you can cartwheel and your to as a dancer at the Moulin Rouge, which roles you kicks are high. Spilling BUSINESS the B eans on. . MILESTONES

It’s been said that when it comes to being successful in business, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart. Well, here at Oasis, our business is so prominent in our hearts that it’s possible our hearts are in the shape of our office. Because of this undying love, we are truly tickled pink to be celebrating Oasis’ 5th Birthday! In fact, we love celebrating SO much that we wanted to celebrate some more! To keep the party going, we had a chat with three local businesses who are celebrating some exciting milestones of their own.

PAIGE HUNTER

FACE CANDY COSMETIC CLINIC

NATHAN HUBBARD FOTOFUN TIMES

1. Tell us a bit about your business! What milestone have you recently hit? PAIGE: Face Candy Cosmetic Clinic offers a vast range of prestige cosmetic services at competitive prices. As a Cairns local I wanted Face Candy to be different to the regular formalities of cosmetics, which is why I have created a space I feel is unpretentious and cozy. It is my goal to make sure all clients feel appreciated, welcome, and most of all satisfied with each and every visit. We have just turned one last month! When I first started Face Candy, like all first-time business owners, I was very hesitant and unsure about what the future of Face Candy would entail, but celebrating one year in our brand new clinic was beyond rewarding. NATHAN: Fotofun Times is a photo entertainment business that has been putting the fun times in parties in Cairns for 10 years now. JUNE: Dancescapes The June Vale Dancers - we are an innovative Boutique Dance Studio situated at Barr St Markets in Earlville. We teach a diversity of dance styles from the age of 2 years & up. Dancescapes has been operating for 27 years. 2. Are you celebrating this milestone in a special way? PAIGE: We ran an $800 birthday giveaway in celebration of our first birthday! It went extremely well and it was amazing to collaborate with the other local businesses here at Barr St Markets in order to give our appreciation to Cairns for the ongoing support on our new journey. NATHAN: We’re planning to have dinner and drinks for 28 | www.oasismagazine.com.au

all of our staff, and I might even put a special together for our customers later in the year. JUNE: We would love to have a reunion of celebration for our 30th year inviting all our past students and our present students of Dancescapes. 3. What has been the highlight of your time in business? PAIGE: I cannot define one single highlight in my first year of business. Every single day meeting new clients; getting to know them; and seeing them smile at the end of their session makes my day. It is such a rewarding feeling to put a smile on someone else’s face, and to make them feel extra special for the little time that they’re in my clinic. NATHAN: There are a lot of highlights! I think it’s just being able to share all these really special milestones with clients. Whether it’s a wedding, a milestone birthday, or even a corporate function! These events are always really special to someone. It’s nice to be part of it. JUNE: Moving into our brand new Dance Studio at Barr St Markets, after 25 years. 4. Cairns is a very entrepreneurial town. Why do you think this is? PAIGE: Cairns is such a beautiful part of the world. I think people can see that so they use their talents to start something of their own to build a life here. I think it’s really important we continue to support local businesses and watch Cairns grow to its full potential!

NATHAN: It’s a very transient town, so you end up with a lot of people from a lot of different places who are drawn to live here for various reasons - the same reasons we all love living here. When you get so many people from so many different places in one spot, you get lots of different ideas coming together and people start to think, hey, this might work here! Maybe that’s it. JUNE: The Cairns community offers many opportunities for locals and local businesses to be successful. 5. What are your goals for your business over the next 5 years? PAIGE: We have just added two new services to our menu which I’m really excited about. I will be announcing these towards the beginning of August! My long term goals are a secret; you’ll have to wait and see... NATHAN: You mean aside from surviving? *Laughs* Our real goal is to keep making sure our clients are having a good time and that they are enjoying their events. There has been a lot of growth in the corporate market in the event space, so we’re looking forward to seeing more of that. But as far as goals go, we just

want to keep on trucking. JUNE: Our aim is to produce outstanding dancers of the highest standard, whether it be pursuing dance as a career or simply for the love of dance. 6. What advice do you have for someone who would like to start their own business, or what do you wish you would’ve known before you started yours? PAIGE: Believe in yourself and love what you do. If you believe you can you will, and if you enjoy what you do it’ll show and the rest will fall into place. Dream big and most importantly never give up! NATHAN: You really have to understand how much hard work it is. A lot of people think it will be easy. It’s not until you get right into it that you realise how hard it actually is. And even one like mine - going to parties, having a good time, and getting to have a drink with your clients - is a lot of hard work during the week. Just don’t underestimate the amount of hard work you’ll have to do to get it rolling. But when it is rolling, enjoy it and make the most of it. JUNE: Have a good support team with a good knowledge of business and be sure to follow your dream.

BILLY’S BUDDIES Billy’s Buddies is the brainchild of Billy Slater - former Melbourne Storm, Queensland, and Australian Rugby League superstar. Billy’s Buddies is a non-contact ball sports program for boys and girls ages 2 to 6 years old. The program began in Brisbane in 2016 and has since grown to more than 280 locations across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast, Sydney, and most recently, Cairns. Billy’s Buddies, written by Billy Slater in conjunction with an Early Childhood Teacher and Exercise Sports Scientist, is not just about Rugby League. It’s about learning the fundamentals of all ball sports in a fun, safe, and exciting environment. Each week, Billy’s Buddies runs theme-based sessions that focus on developing children’s social skills while also teaching them the fundamentals of not only Rugby League, but ball sports in general. It is the goal of Billy’s Buddies to empower all children who participate in their program by assisting with

developing their confidence, self-esteem, hand-eye coordination, and gross motor skills. Billy’s Buddies wants children to become great team players and learn the important of teamwork, just like Billy himself. The program is offered across childcare centres as an extracurricular activity to complement their learning plan and to children of the general public through the Billy’s Buddies Park Session and Junior Rugby League Club programs. Billy’s Buddies was recently awarded the Best National Pre-Schooler Activity at the 2019 What’s On 4 Kids Awards, and in 2018 was named runner-up as the Best National Toddler Activity. Kate Macrae and her husband Andrew Fey started the Cairns franchise in February 2019. Kate has 10 years experience working in junior sport, having previously worked for Surf Life Saving and Little Athletics Queensland. Kate and Andrew complement each

other and the business well, with Kate being the main Billy’s Buddies Coach while Andrew takes care of the back end of the business. “Billy’s Buddies gives all children aged 2 to 6 years the opportunity for an introduction into Rugby League and ball sports. However, what I am most excited about and proud of is that we provide an opportunity for girls to be involved. With the inclusion of women’s competitions in major sports now, it’s important for girls to be able to see their favourite female athletes in action on TV and then be able to go and play themselves!” Kate says. “Watching the development of our young Buddies since February has been amazing. Not just in a physical capacity, but also in listening, learning to follow instructions, and making new friends,” Kate adds. “Billy’s Buddies is also very affordable with no upfront term fees - it’s pay by the week. I know how expensive extracurricular activities and sport can be, so when we were looking into buying the franchise, keeping the cost low for families was extremely important to us. It was also important to us to see Billy’s involvement. The few times I have spoken to Billy he has really impressed me with his passion and commitment to Billy’s Buddies, especially in the Cairns and Innisfail regions, being his hometown.

We look forward to having Billy visit all his little Buddies in Cairns and Innisfail.” Billy’s Buddies currently have sessions running from Kewarra Beach to Gordonvale, with a new session in Innisfail. For more information, go to billysbuddies. com.au, join the socials ‘Billy’s Buddies’, or contact Kate at either cairns@billysbuddies.com.au or 0427 808 795.

CAROL SWEATMAN

HANDING OVER

the reins

What do you do when you are passionate about your job and organisation but you sense it is time for a new challenge? In the case of Terrain NRM CEO Carole Sweatman, you wrestle with that conundrum for months…and then you make a tough decision. The award-winning Cairns CEO is stepping down from her role with Terrain after nine years as its leader and plenty of runs on the board. They range from building strong partnerships across conservation and farming sectors to being at the forefront of innovative programs breaking new ground in Great Barrier Reef water quality. Carole says her time with the not-for-profit organisation, which is one of 54 regional natural resource management bodies around Australia, has been nothing short of amazing. And we can see why when there are projects ranging from cassowary, mahogany glider and rainforest recovery to farming innovations improving water flowing to the Great Barrier Reef. Add to that a new reef credits system much like carbon credits… “How could I not love a job in the most beautiful part of Australia, working with hard-working, passionate people with amazing ideas?” she says. “This hasn’t been an easy decision to make. Terrain is a huge part of my life. But I know deep down that the time is right for me and I believe there should be renewal in organisations, especially in leadership roles. “Each role in my career has brought new skills, added confidence and experience, and increased my capacity to grow and become a better leader. It sounds cliché but you never stop learning. I absolutely believe that always being curious, reflecting and searching for better solutions is critical.”

32 | www.oasismagazine.com.au

Carole began her love affair with the Wet Tropics 15 years ago, after buying a rainforest block on a whim during a trip to the Far North. Her passion for the natural environment and its sustainable use was fuelled many years earlier and it has taken her from positions in local and state government to volunteer work with the United Nations and her current role with Terrain NRM. She says building strong working partnerships and collaborative leadership are her ‘go to’ practices. “The best results happen when people put their own ideas forward and you are able to get them to fruition – it can take time and it’s often challenging but with ownership and goodwill a project is so much stronger. Solutions for a better planet and great communities only come when we work together. “Our daily motivation at Terrain NRM is the incredible people we work with in our region.” Tributes have flowed in for Carole from the likes of Adjunct Professor Peter Valentine from the Centre for Tropical Environmental and Sustainability Science, who says she “made tough decisions in tough times” and worked with “compassion and inclusiveness”.

Terrain NRM Chair Keith Noble says Carole will leave a legacy of partnerships within and well beyond the Wet Tropics region. “Building a strong leadership team and attracting dedicated and talented staff will also be part of Carole’s legacy. Our staff are passionate about land management and about improving the condition of the environment while also maintaining sustainable livelihoods and industries.’’ Ask Carole what her next move is and she is refreshingly non-committal. “I’m not sure yet but I’m looking forward to it!’’ she says. “It’s exciting and also a little bit daunting. I’m looking forward to spending time with my family, who have been so supportive, while I think about the next steps. Ultimately using my experiences to have a broader impact on the world’s natural resource challenges is a goal. There is still so much to achieve for our planet and people.” For more information about Terrain NRM, visit www.terrain.org.au and follow the organisation on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

MY CAIRNS CONCIERGE

Making your life easier BUSY. It’s the word to best describe many of us these days. In amongst our daily commitments to work, family, and friends, we humans seem to have less and less time available to do all the tasks we are required to do.

34 | www.oasismagazine.com.au

Annette Gaborit saw this trend emerging, and decided to use her experience to help people cope with the pressures of everyday life. “It is something that had been in the back of my mind for many years,” Annette explains. “When I arrived in Australia in the mid-1980’s, I was a tour guide taking French nationals around the country. I also worked as a project manager for an inbound destination management company for 20 years. So having spent over 25 years working in the international tourism industry, I realised I had a really good knowledge of what international travellers expect when they travel to our region.” And because Cairns is such a busy tourism destination, and I thought about ways I could use this knowledge, and my organisational skills to help visitors maximise their holiday time in our gorgeous part of the world. The result was My Cairns Concierge. “It’s all based on a hotel concierge. When you stay in a hotel, the concierge assists the hotel guests by performing tasks such as making restaurant reservations, arranging for spa services, booking taxis. The concierge’s role is to free up your holiday time by doing the menial tasks, and make your stay as enjoyable as possible. That’s exactly what this business does.” My Cairns Concierge helps busy people create the time to do what they enjoy best. “And as the business has progressed, I realised there are so many different aspects to this business.” MY HOLIDAY CONCIERGE You have a short term rental property, maybe an AirBNB. But you can’t always be there at the times that your guests are arriving. My Cairns Concierge can meet and greet your guests, and arrange cleaners and tradespeople. MY TRAVEL CONCIERGE This is perfect for visitors to the region. When a tourist hires a villa, My Cairns Concierge can arrange for your groceries to be in the fridge when they arrive, and for baby equipment to be ready to use. We can recommend tours and book them, so that their holiday starts the moment they arrive. MY HOME CONCIERGE For people who own a property in Cairns, but don’t live

here all the time, My Cairns Concierge gives you peace of mind. Perfect during the cyclone months, we can look after the exterior property. Really looking after the exterior of the home. MY ESTATE CONCIERGE When buying an investment property in Cairns, the images and videos on the website don’t always show the entire property. My Cairns Concierge can do the initial legwork for prospective purchasers. Armed with details of the purchasers requirements and budget, we inspect the property, take photos and videos, and provide an unbiased report. MY PERSONAL CONCIERGE This flexible service covers a huge scope. From helping a new mum with simple tasks around the house, or waiting for a tradesperson to arrive, to being a companion for an elderly relative. Think shopping for gifts, running errands, pickup and deliveries. Perfect for the FIFO worker, My Cairns Concierge can ensure your house is clean and there’s food in the fridge upon your arrival home, so your time off can be exactly that. MY RELOCATION CONCIERGE And for businesses relocating staff, My Cairns Concierge can research schools, homes, gardeners and household services - everything to make the newly arrived family feel at home in their new home. “This is a flexible service, and it’s perfect for those one-off or unusual requests,” Annette explains. “Just last week, I had a call from a woman in Brisbane. She had seen a chandelier for sale on Facebook, and it was located in Cairns. She asked me to collect the item and have it delivered to her address in Brisbane.” “We are living in times of great change, and this business is all about making your life easier,” Annette says. “It’s too easy, in amongst all the busy-ness, to forget the very simple things in life, like spending quality time with family and friends. She’s right. And calling on a concierge seems to be the perfect solution to take the stress away. ear Agony Aunt, My husband and I have separated. The kids have not taken our separation well and my daughter, in particular is refusing to see her Dad. I try my best to encourage our daughter to see her Dad, he is a good Dad, but it is so difficult to push her when she is so adamant that she won’t. Do I have to force her? She is 13 years old. Isn’t she old enough to decide how she spends time with her Dad? Frustrated Mother.

D

ear Frustrated Mother, Unfortunately you are in a difficult situation. When parents separate there is a presumption at law that both parents have parental responsibility for a child. However there is no hard and fast rule that says that a child should spend equal time with a parent. It comes down to what is in the best interests of the child and their individual needs. The Family Court often has to deal with the issue of a child resisting spending time with a parent. A paramount consideration for the Court is the benefit to a child of having a meaningful relationship with both of the child’s parents. Sometimes this may mean that the Court is robust in making orders to ensure that a child spends time with a parent. The Courts will often seek the advice of experts in determining how a child should spend time with a parent and deferring to that advice. Often the Court is of the view that a child cannot know or appreciate what is in their best interests. Courts can also be pro-active in attempting to restore a difficult parent/child relationship.

Where Court Orders are in place for a child to spend time with a parent, the Orders must be complied with. Parents are the adults after all and the enforcers of boundaries and routines on children. Where Orders are in place that require a child to spend time with a parent, both parents must ensure the Orders are complied with, no matter how difficult it may feel at the time to enforce them. My advice would be for both parents, to accept and understand that your child is going through a difficult adjustment period and needs your unconditional love and support. You should both tread gently and be encouraging and supportive. Counselling and mediation services are available that offer family separation counselling for parents and children. Perhaps you could suggest to your ex that he and your daughter participate in counselling that might improve their communication and help your daughter resolve any issues she has at present with her Dad. If you have ongoing concerns about your daughter’s refusal to spend time with her father or concerns about complying with Court Orders you should seek legal advice. What the government meant to say BUT DIDN’T... ACCOUTANT CHARISSE RUSSELL Director

Scott Morrison and Josh Frydenburg have been busy telling everyone about the $1080 they will receive when they lodge their tax return this year and how it will go a long way to stimulate the economy. Even though the details about this tax cut have been generally skipped over, it got people lodging early tax returns in record numbers, and why wouldn’t it, most of us still won’t turn our noses up when offered a thousand dollars for doing something we had to do anyway. But the thing is, bluntly, that they were skipping a lot of the details in the announcements because for anyone aware of how the tax system works in Australia, they would have realised that no-one would actually be receiving $1080. Not the way it was portrayed in the media. $1080 is the maximum NON REFUNDABLE TAX OFFSET that at this stage of the scheme will produce, and it depends on your income. The higher your income sits in the threshold the greater the offset you will be eligible for, meaning that at the top of the threshold the government will reduce your taxable income by $1080.

people eligible for the offset that means on average around about the 30% mark which will result in about a $300 difference to their refund or amount payable. In short, that really is what the Government should have announced but in an age of instant headlines it’s all a bit long winded and complicated, and confused people tend to get a bit angry, but not as angry as the people who lodged early because they were promised a thousand dollars that they didn’t receive. It will deliver a better return for you this year, don’t get me wrong, but it won’t give most people what they thought they get so, please, don’t get angry at your accountant, tax agent , or the unfortunate souls at the ATO who are going to be trying to explain this to the public because the Treasurer meant to, but in all of the excitement, forgot to.

ANNUAL CAREERS EXPO

Business Liaison ASSOCIATION Each year the Business Liaison Association coordinates the Cairns Youth & Careers Expo which is held in the Fred Moule Pavilion at the Cairns Show Grounds. We hold this event to showcase to students in Cairns and the surrounding regions some of the career pathways that are available and what is currently trending. The Careers Expo is in its 18th year and growing sustainably each year. The Expo was opened on the Monday night before the event by Mr Michael Healy MP with a formal cocktail party held at the Bungalow Hotel function room.

Government Departments, Vocation Training Organisations, Traineeships & Apprenticeships, Not for Profit - Youth Well Being and Life Skills, Media & Marketing, Arts, Film, Music and Dance just to mention a few. Throughout the morning we were entertained with live music from CQUniversity and in the afternoon Juanita and the team from Star 102.7 hosting a live broadcast from within the Expo. This again provided an atmosphere which was all part of the experience. There were numerous activities held throughout the day and over 90% of the exhibitors were interactive. The Business Liaison Association encourages exhibitors to have a strong focus on interaction to connect with the students. Research has shown that teenagers have a better chance of remembering an exhibitor if they are engaged with the staff in their booth.

We had a fantastic number of exhibitors attend this year travelling from all around Australia, some from as far afield as Tasmania and South Australia. Being able to attract these exhibitors is a testimony to the level of the event. Each year the event gains more traction and Our vision this year was to have our exhibitors has been identified as the best regional Careers Expo focus on interaction whilst providing an experience for the students. Our exhibitors went above and in Queensland. beyond to engage the students walking through the This year the Expo consisted of 65 exhibitors offering doors including virtual reality, games, competitions, a a multitude of pathways including Universities, quick lesson on CPR, learn to drive a forklift or they Accommodation options, Defence Force Recruitment, could even ride the mechanical surfboard. The Staff of the Business Liaison Association are very passionate about what we do and how we effect the lives of the students in the Cairns and surrounding regions. We are both mothers of children who encompass a variety of talents. We understand that every child is different and the importance of helping all children to be the best that they can be and to follow their talents in choosing their career paths. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful 2019 Youth & Careers and Expo Sponsors, Life Sumo, Total Exhibition Services and Cairns Show Association. We all know that “It takes a village to raise a child. Without the support of all our sponsors and our community we would not be able to provide this wonderful opportunity to the students to assist them with their pathways to their future careers and help them achieve their End Game! We encourage you to drop in next year and see what all the excitement and commotion was about! AUG | SEP 2019 | 49

MEET

Abi Muir

She’s only young but 15-year-old Cairns student, Abi Muir, is well and truly on the way to making a name for herself in the Australian music industry. Her debut song, “Heebiejeebies”, has been streamed over 54,000 times on Spotify and continues to rise in popularity every day. If that wasn’t incredible enough, Abi also wrote and recorded the song herself in a booth she built in her parent’s garage. Talk about amazing! How old were you when you started singing? I’ve always loved singing. I grew up on a tiny island in a very musical culture and was brought up with performing arts - mainly dance. I started singing in our Gaelic school choir when I was 5 and when I was 8 my sister and I won the duo singing section of the Barra Mod (a Gaelic version of the Eisteddfod we have here). My passion for singing grew as I got older, and my focus became more about the music than dance. The idea of being a ‘pop star’ has always been a dream to me, but I only really became serious about wanting to pursue a career in music just over a year ago. What is Creative Generation, and what motivated you to audition to be a featured vocalist? CGEN is the largest youth performing arts program in Queensland with over 1800 participants. The audition process was brutal, not something I had EVER done before. I was terrified and went home crying because of how scared I was that I had messed up. I wasn’t expecting to get in after realising the standards they have for CGEN, but I did! I cried for a solid hour after receiving the email saying that I had been successful! My mum and I have had to fly to Brisbane almost every second weekend since for all-day rehearsals. I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had. Being surrounded by people who share the same passion and dreams as I do is magical. Congratulations on releasing your first song to Spotify! Tell us a bit about that. I wanted to help cover the travel costs associated with attending CGEN rehearsals, so we decided to release ‘Heebiejeebies’ as my debut single on Spotify. I finished recording it in March and it was released on April 2nd. In just a week it had over one thousand streams, and 50 | www.oasismagazine.com.au

we thought that was amazing. In just one month it had over 20,000 streams and we received a phone call from a very well known record label to send them a demo! You never know who’s listening! However, even though it’s now nearly at 55,000 streams, it’s only earned enough money to pay for one of the seven flights I’ve had to take to Brisbane for CGEN! How do you record your music? My parents have been so supportive of me that we’ve turned the garage into a home recording studio! My Mum was given an old table from work and my Dad and I upcycled it, spray painting it black and gold to go with my new microphone. He bought lots of foam sheets and board and we made a booth to help with containing the sound in the garage. I have all my own recording equipment, speakers, and a bunch of other things that I use while making my music. I’m usually in the garage 24/7 rehearsing or recording. My Mum’s car doesn’t get to go in there anymore! What does the future hold for you? I hope my future holds performances on top of performances! I’m hoping I will be successful in achieving my dream of being a well-known singer. I hope to make music that people all over the world can relate to, sing along to, or even just dance to! Music and songs have the power to change how you feel no matter who you are or where you’re from. What is your best advice for other young people who would like to pursue music in the same way you have? The best advice I can give to aspiring artists is to never give up, and as cliché as it sounds; BELIEVE in yourself! Because if YOU don’t…why should anyone else?
