About our Academy Oasis Academy Pinewood is situated in Collier Row, Romford. The Academy is situated in a pleasant residential area with good transport links into the centre of Romford and with close proximity to Havering Country Park. The Academy has large classrooms, excellent outside learning spaces and a fully integrated Nursery unit. Oasis Academy Pinewood is an Academy which admits children between the ages of 4 to 11 years. We provide 15 hours free Nursery provision for our youngest children in a bright and inviting purpose build Nursery unit. The majority of our Nursery children progress into the Academy Reception classes. We currently have two classes in each infant year group (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) and one class in each of the junior years (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6). Each class teacher is supported with a Teaching Assistant and the quality of teaching across the Academy is good. Children are given a wide range of learning experiences delivered through the National Curriculum, International Primary Curriculum as well as Forest School provision. We are progressing through the UNICEF Rights Respecting School Quality Award. We are a fully inclusive Academy and were the first school in Havering to achieve the Inclusion Quality Mark, which we have held since 2006. Our relationships with parents are good and are strengthened by parental participation and contributions to the Academy. We have an active Pinewood Friends

4

(Parents Association) which delivers a wide range of additional enrichment events for families across the Academy and raises funds to buy additional resources for the Academy. Parents/carers are welcomed into the Academy and attend parents evenings every term. You will receive mid-year reports about your child’s progress and attainment as well as an end of year report. We run a variety of parents’ workshops and presentations to support parents in their parenting roles. We also have a Parent Partnership Worker, who is available to support parents on a one-to-one basis. We have an “open door” policy by which parents who have any concerns with regard to their child’s education, welfare or progress are encouraged to come and speak with either the class teacher or a member of senior staff. Please contact the Academy Office to make an appointment (Tel. 01708 743000). We celebrate children’s success and achievements formally on a weekly basis as well as awarding 100% attendance certificates and end of year awards to our most successful children. We also hold a formal graduation party specifically for our Year 6 children moving into secondary education. There are currently 266 children at the Academy and classes will be organised in straight year groups.

Admissions Statement Childs admitted to the Academy are allocated places in accordance with the local authority’s Admissions Policy. The Curriculum at Oasis Academy Pinewood At Oasis Academy Pinewood, we believe that our children learn best: • If they are actively involved, challenged and enjoy their learning • If we give them a wide experience of different subjects and activities • If we focus on teaching them skills and how to do things

Subjects Children are given a wide range of learning experiences delivered through the National Curriculum, Early Years Foundation Curriculum, International Primary Curriculum as well as Forest School provision. We are progressing through the UNICEF Rights Respecting School quality award. Each day children are taught Literacy, Maths and ICT skills. The curriculum is enhanced by the teaching of discrete Science, Physical Education and Religious Education (based on the Havering agreed syllabus). Religious Education must be taught to all children in full time education. It is an integral part of the whole curriculum and promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of all children. The Havering Agreed Syllabus reflects the fact that “religious traditions in the country are in the main Christian whilst taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions in Great Britain.” Our Religious Education must be nondenominational but teaching about denominational differences is permitted. The International Primary Curriculum supports the teaching of Geography, History, Art, Design and Technology as well as personal, social and health education (PSHE). We have a specialist music teacher delivering creative and

expressive arts across the Academy, as well as specialist sports coaches teaching PE. Our Year 4 children have swimming lessons on a weekly basis and Spanish is taught in Year 2-6.

Skills Based Curriculum Every day the amount of knowledge in the world grows. At Oasis Academy Pinewood we believe that it is important to teach children the skills to be able to find out and use the knowledge that they need, when they need it. Our teaching is focused on developing children’s generic learning and thinking skills as well as subject specific skills. We prioritise developing the key skills identified in the National Curriculum as follows: • Communication: This includes the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and using them across the curriculum and in everyday situations. • Application of Numbers: this includes developing mental and written calculation skills, using data, interpreting measurements and being able to use these skills in different subjects and everyday situations. • Information & Communication Technology: As computers become increasingly more important in all aspect of life, learners needs to be able to choose ICT tools to find. Analyse, interpret, evaluate and present information. They need to be able to decide when and how to use ICT. The Academy has excellent computer facilities including a Samsung room. • Learning to Learn: This is a process of discovery about learning. It involves a set of principles and skills which, if understood and used, helps learners learn more effectively and become learners for life. • Problem Solving: We embed problem solving in all areas of the curriculum to help children develop skills and strategies linked to them.

Sex and Relationships Education Sex Education forms part of the health and science curriculum. Children learn about relationships within a moral, family-orientated framework. They learn about themselves and other living organisms as part of the life and living processes elements of the science curriculum. Parents/ carers are informed of this and given the opportunity to discuss the resources and content of these lessons. Parents/carers have a right to withdraw their child from sex education and may discuss this with the child’s class teacher.

Home Learning We expect children to reinforce and extend the learning they are doing in the Academy at home. To this end, we set regular home learning tasks. The amount of time children are expected to spend on formal learning at home increases as they go through the Academy. Parents will be informed about the homework and Academy’s expectations at the start of each term, through the Academy web site and through weekly newsletters. All children have a home/school diary, which can be used to promote communication between home and the Academy. Please write down in your child’s homework diary anything you wish the teacher to be aware of relating to the home learning tasks. Parents are expected to sign the home/ school diary to confirm that their child has read at home on a daily basis. Children who have special education needs will receive specific information on their Individual Education Plan which will include tasks to help at home.

Awards scheme It is important to children that their efforts and achievements are recognised in order to develop self worth and confidence. Therefore we offer a range of

10

award schemes across the Academy ranging from verbal praise to team points to post cards sent home. Children working collaboratively are rewarded for good team work. Individual attendance and collective class attendance awards are given out weekly. Children are recognised for representing the Academy at different events within the wider community. A celebration assembly takes place every Friday for the whole Academy.

Collective Worship Collective acts of worship are provided on a daily basis in line with the requirements of the Education Reform Act 1988. These are broadly Christian in tone but explore other cultures and beliefs as well as providing a chance to discuss moral issues. They may be in the form of whole Academy, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 or class assemblies. Different members of staff lead these assemblies, with regular visits from outside speakers. Parents/carers have the right to withdraw their children from acts of collective worship. If you wish to do this, you should discuss this with your child’s class teacher.

Extra-Curricular Activities Extra curriculum activities are valuable in raising standards in education, developing social skills and supporting parents; to further enrich their lives at the Academy, all children are encouraged to participate. Clubs may range from football to creative writing to juggling. Most activities take place either at lunchtime or after the Academy day. A full list of clubs will be sent to parents at the start of each term. Places at clubs are offered on a first come first served basis and waiting lists will be held for popular clubs. Children not attending clubs for two consecutive weeks will be removed from the club list and their place reallocated.

Sporting Aims Children at Oasis Academy Pinewood are encouraged to participate in a variety of sporting activities ranging from gymnastics, dance, and small ball games to team games such as netball, football and rounders. Year 4 children attend swimming lessons. Whilst urging the children to do their best at all times, we also believe that children should learn to enjoy taking part and that winning is not the only mark of achievement. A family sports/picnic day takes place during the summer term and awards given both individually and collectively, for achievement at this event.
