Prospectus 2016/2017

A very warm welcome to Oasis Community Learning! I am delighted that you and your daughter or son are interested in becoming part of Oasis Academy Enfield. Oasis Community Learning was established as a Multi- Academy Trust in 2004 with the vision to create: “Exceptional Education at the Heart of the Community”. We now run Academies in four main regions throughout the UK, providing either primary, secondary or all- through education. All our Academies are committed to providing a rich educational experience and ensuring that every child and young person has the opportunity to achieve at the highest level. Our ethos is integral to that provision: it is an expression of our character, a statement of who we are and therefore the lens through which we assess all we do. We are committed to a model of inclusion, equality, healthy relationships, hope, and perseverance throughout all the aspects of the life and culture of each academy community.

We passionately embrace learning and are committed to every child within our care reaching their full potential and developing holistically across every area of their lives, both now and in the future. All of this is underpinned by our philosophy of education which highlights our focus on inspirational leadership, deep learning and healthy communities and aspires to develop the character and competence of every child within every community that we are part of. At Oasis Community Learning therefore, we believe we are all ‘the architects of our students’ lives’ and as such we are committed to laying the right foundations for every one of our young people. So we look forward to your daughter or son potentially becoming part of Oasis, in the knowledge that we will work in partnership with you to ensure they become con dent learners ready to full their aspirations in life Best wishes, John Murphy

Oasis Academy Enfield is a vibrant and exciting place to study. You will experience a state-ofthe-art learning environment, dividing your time between our £30M Academy building, and your own, dedicated Sixth Form centre – both equipped with outstanding IT facilities.

Students who attend our Sixth Form can expect to enjoy their learning, be challenged every day and make rapid progress.

Situated on the edge of Innova Park, you are able to take advantage of unique enrichment opportunities, with the chance to gain work experience at huge brand-name companies, including John Lewis and Sony. We are very proud to be part of the Access Project, helping our students gain places at the very best universities in the world. Teachers are the foundation of any great school, and at Oasis Academy Enfield we have strong teaching and support staff, which we believe will deliver a consistently excellent learning experience for all our Sixth Formers. Our teachers pride themselves on being approachable, understanding and supportive. Over the years, many visitors have commented on the ‘family atmosphere’ that pervades the Academy, and our provision at key stage five is no different.

Nicholas Stephens, class of 2016

I am exceptionally proud to be Principal of our Academy, which sits at the heart of our community hub and has a well-deserved reputation for teaching quality, provision of care and academic success for all. I have the privilege of leading a team of outstanding staff who inspire and nurture students to achieve both academic excellence and strength of character, and therefore help develop young people who have a positive, transformative impact on their community. Traditional values like respect, discipline, and hard work are cherished. Young people are guided and challenged to manage themselves and become mature and sociable adults. We champion and celebrate progress in all aspects of young people’s lives. These are the high expectations which Ofsted praised so strongly when we were inspected in April 2015. Students are recognised as individuals; yet we act together as a strong family, proud of the Oasis values and ethos which act as a foundation for all we do. Sixth Formers have a real voice here, they actively contribute to the running of the Academy and are engaged in youth politics and activism.

Sixth Form is such an important time in young people’s lives. Academic excellence, personal development and the realisation of aspirations for university and careers can all be realised in these two, short years. The package we offer leaves nothing to chance and is built upon the simple principle that every one of our Sixth Form students can and should be aspiring to the very best, be it a Russell Group university, Fortune 500 employer or to change their community for the better. I know that if you are reading this you want nothing short of excellence for yourself or your child. We want that too. That is why we are here, dedicated to young people’s futures; learning together, succeeding together. Neil Hassell BEng NPQH FRSA Principal

Great teaching and learning is at the centre of everything we do. We are absolutely dedicated to having a transformative effect on young people’s lives and have a highly skilled body of teaching and support staff who are always willing to ‘go the extra mile’ for our young people.

Our teachers use a host of data to better understand the individuals in their classes and personalise learning. Our highly qualified and experienced inclusion staff meet the individual requirements of students with special educational needs or disabilities. A learning and teaching group of outstanding practitioners design and constantly assess the curriculum and staff training to ensure that teaching is at its keenest and every student is stretched and challenged to the fullest.

Our curriculum has been carefully designed to reflect the aspirations and meet the needs of our students. Our course offer caters for all students, regardless of their starting point, allowing every single individual to make progress towards their personal goals. We offer A-levels in a range of traditional facilitating subjects, highly regarded by universities, as well as more modern A-level courses such as Media Studies, Business and ICT that have clear real-world applications. For those seeking professional and vocational study opportunities, we offer a variety of BTEC Level 3 qualifications. These courses can be combined freely with A-levels, allowing students the flexibility to study in both professional and academic pathways at the same time and in a way that complements their strengths and supports their areas for development.

We also offer a full level two provision for those Those needing to retake English and/or mathematics will be able to do so, alongside a suite of carefully chosen Level 2 NCFE courses in sport, business and graphics. Regardless of the type of course, you will find that our teachers have outstanding subject knowledge, strong teaching skills and a deeprooted commitment to helping students progress. What makes our Sixth Form so distinctive is our willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty in supporting our pupils to succeed. With key educational partners such as the PiXL organisation, ALPS and the Access Project, we have plenty of expertise at our disposal to help you reach the next level. No matter your starting point, whether your goal is higher education, employment or an apprenticeship, we will go the extra mile to help you reach your desired destination.

The foundations of our Sixth Form were laid down eight years ago. I remember Thursday evenings, being part of a steering group and developing what would become the vibrant, popular Sixth Form you see today.

‘Good’ noting our strength in leadership, our work with our disadvantaged students, the high quality of advice and guidance, and most importantly recognition of our Sixth Formers maturity and work ethic.

Our main goal then, as now, to provide all students in Enfield with the opportunity to grow and develop and open doors that they didn’t think were possible to open.

Coupled with outstanding teaching, variety of subjects and excellent facilities we are distinctive in that we offer: a mature, independent college experience in our own building across the road from the main Academy with the traditional, supportive and family feel of a Sixth Form.

What makes our sixth form unique is our core value of ‘progress for all’. Our students leave our Sixth Form having made progress, regardless of their starting point because we work closely with every student to provide the opportunity to go to university, go straight into the world of work or join an apprenticeship scheme. Every single one of our sixth formers who wants to has secured a place at university this year, with 64% of them going to ‘top third’ universities and a quarter of them going to ‘Russell Group’ universities.

From the Wednesday university style ‘societies’ to the extra curricular activities and the Oasis Plus work experience scheme, we are always seeking to develop our students in exciting and innovative ways. Gamze Sahin BA (Hons) Assistant Principal Director of Post 16 Studies

Miles was tutored by Matthew Grist (Hiscox) in physics and Paul Miller (Ashurst) in mathematics. In total he received 68 hours of tutorials. He received five top third and Russell Group Universities offers: UCL, Bristol, Glasgow, Kent and East Anglia to study Chemical Physics.

“Myles turns up on time every week and is ready to work. The tutorials are enjoyable and relaxed and we often have a laugh and a joke, which is good. I I think his progress has been exceptional. He’s set himself ambitious targets at A-level but I’m confident that he’ll achieve them.” Matthew Grist (Tutor)

“Working with The Access Project has helped me to improve the grades in my subjects tremendously. My tutorials are focused around me and the areas I am weak in. I wouldn't have got an A without my tutor.”

We want every one of our students, including every member of our Sixth Form, to develop into an effective citizen and be a valued member of tomorrow’s workforce, either as an employee or an entrepreneur. Oasis Plus is a practical expression of this aspiration and is a key part of the Sixth Form experience at Oasis Academy Enfield. Oasis Plus is a unique package of activities designed to give you the skills, experience and confidence to succeed at the highest level, the best jobs, the most sought after university places, and the most fulfilling careers. Through Oasis Plus we want to give you that ‘something extra’, something that will mark you out to employers and university admissions tutors as a special candidate, on top of your excellent grades. We know that, as an Oasis Academy Enfield student, you are special; Oasis Plus allows you to demonstrate this talent in all its breadth and to build on it. Oasis Plus consists of three strands. The first is our guidance and support programme, delivered in partnership with The Access Project, which pairs you with mentors based with blue-chip companies in the City of London and elsewhere.

The second is our employability placement programme. This is delivered in partnership with Enfield Learning and Skills for Work Service, involving a half a day a week on placement with a local employer for a term, developing real experience of how workplaces operate and what demands the world of work will make on you. Employers involved, most of who are based on Innova Park, are drawn from a range of industries and include national and international businesses including John Lewis and Sony. Finally, a partnership with the local voluntary sector and our hub team opens up a range of volunteering opportunities. This provides a valuable way of developing your own skills and knowledge while making a real contribution within the community or to a cause that matters to you.

Toyo achieved an incredible four A* grades at A Level, the best results in the Academy and enough to make the newspaper headlines across the borough. He has since secured a highly sought after place at the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, where he is studying mathematics. Toyo was an active member of the Access Project meeting with his tutor, a PHD student from UCL, with whom he would tackle university level mathematics questions and work on difficult A Level topics. In addition, through our Access Project partnership Toyo also spent six days at the UNIQ summer school at Oxford University and prepared for his interview at the world famous Eton College.

On the morning of his examination results Toyo was interviewed by the papers:

“I am so pleased, all my hard work has paid off. All my teachers and the Access Project tutor have really helped me. I can now go to Imperial College to study mathematics. Simple words, but ones that encapsulate the Oasis Academy Enfield experience!

As part of Oasis Plus, Sixth Formers at Oasis Academy Enfield have the chance to sign up to The Access Project, which is unique amongst Enfield schools. The Access Project supports students to work towards higher education by pairing them with graduate mentors from top London companies. These mentors will advise you on your work and your university applications, giving you expert guidance and putting you on a fast track to success. The quality of care, guidance and support is something that truly sets our Sixth Form apart. Our staff have a passion for helping students to achieve their goals, and show this commitment through the many hours that they spend supporting Sixth Formers in coursework and preparing them for exams. Each term, we put on an array of raising-attainment activities outside ordinary lesson times, designed to help students progress towards their target grades. In designing these raising attainment strategies, we receive state-of- the-art advice from the PiXL organisation – a supporting body with a proven record that now works with over 1500 schools in the UK. At Oasis Academy Enfield, we have invested in a first-class team to lead Sixth Form achievement. Our students are supported by a dedicated Assistant Principal - Director of Post-16 Studies, two pastoral heads of year, and a full-time administrative assistant. Together, this team ensures that the highest standards are maintained for our Sixth Form students. Each Sixth Former will find themselves part of a ‘learning family’ of around 25 students, with a ‘learning guide’ who knows their strengths, oversees their achievements and communicates directly with their family. This personal approach helps students in our Sixth Form to thrive in an atmosphere of close support.

As our commitment to developing Oasis Plus demonstrates, we believe that education is about more than just grades. At Oasis Academy Enfield all students will have the chance to experience a range of extra-curricular opportunities that will help them grow as people and prepare for the wider world. Sixth Formers at the Academy regularly support those lower down through mentoring and reading programmes, and by volunteering to provide in-class support in one of their key subject areas. Some of our Sixth Formers already work in local primary schools, youth centres and homes for the elderly. We believe that Sixth Formers should have a say in the issues that affect them, and we have a welldeveloped Sixth Form Student Leadership Team that allows pupils to debate and make decisions which our Sixth Form leaders pledge to act on. Everything we do is aimed at preparing our students for the future and our societies do just that. The Sixth Form societies take place every Wednesday afternoon where we stop all lessons and our students participate in an optional extracurricular activity that is of interest to them. By giving them the freedom to choose from debating club, to healthy minds, sports, peer mentoring and Duke of Edinburgh Award to name a few, we develop student ownership, responsibility and leadership skills.

Period six is part of our ‘extended school’ and is often used for Sixth Form lessons and for interventions, clubs and societies. You will not have a period six every day. Sixth Form students have their own social areas and library. Hot and cold food is served in the restaurant, students may visit the local café and there is also a sandwich trolley in the Sixth Form block. You can make your own tea and coffee. There is also a silent area, which is for private study and research. Sixth Formers have access to their own dedicated computer suite.

They lead assemblies, take part in meetings and help run the three student groups: Prefects, Ethos Champions and Student Champions. They work very closely with the senior leadership of the school to act as a real voice for students and bring about continual improvement.

Sixth Form students have access to their own dedicated WiFi network and are encouraged to bring their tablets, laptops and phones for authorised use in lessons and other study time.

Like any employer we expect our students to attend every day and be on time for every lesson and event. We wear smart business dress Mondays to Thursdays and enjoy a more relaxed code on dress-down Friday. The Sixth Form operates a firm, but fair conduct policy.

Equality and inclusion are at the heart of Oasis. We have a passion to include everyone and a deep desire to treat everyone equally. We accept others for who they are and respect differences. Our aim is to provide excellent education for all our students. Our way of doing this is to continually work hard to improve students’ attainment and the standard of teaching and learning. At the same time we aim to meet the needs of the whole person and the whole community as we understand that the whole of life is education and that everyone who is part of a student’s life affects that student’s understanding of life and therefore, his or her education. In this sense, every person matters.

It sets out some key equality provisions for the delivery of education and the requirement for public bodies to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relationships between different groups.

The Equality Act 2010 gather together the various different pieces of equality legislation which have been developed over a number of recent years.

The Academy is committed to meeting its obligations within the law and being a good expression of Oasis’ own commitment to equality.

Against the background of the UK’s increasingly diverse communities, Oasis recognises that this Act plays a major role in recognising the UK’s historic commitment to tolerance. The Equality Act 2010 is, therefore, an important and significant piece of legislation for Oasis as its key provisions underpin the aims of Oasis itself: an equal and inclusive society in which difference is understood and respected.

We charge toward the cost of coach and entrance fees for trips out of the Academy. Parents/carers nor students can be required to pay for activities that take part wholly during the Academy day or are a mandatory part of an examination, but trips may not be able to take place without sufficient voluntary contributions. We use parent pay for all financial transactions. Sixth Form students are expected to be fully equipped for the Academy day with sufficient stationery, paper and folders. These are not provided by the Academy. Students will also be expected to buy their own textbooks and revision guides.

Independent learning is a key aspect of Sixth Form. Students should expect to be doing several hours of consolidation, note taking, reading and research as well as traditional ‘set homework’ each day. The Academy has excellent facilities for this, with the Sixth Form library and silent study areas complimented by a large library and agora space in the main building.

When I started Oasis, back in 1985, I had no idea it would grow into the wonderful family of charities that it has become today. We have not only become the country’s second largest provider of academy schools, educating around 25,000 children and young people, we also provide housing for vulnerable young people, and run everything from community farms to coffee houses and churches to children’s centres, and much more besides, in communities from Gateshead in the North East to Bristol in the South West. So, the question is...why? Not only do we believe your child should receive the very best formal education, but also that there is more to a healthy life and future than simply the knowledge they hold. Every one of us is a product of the community we live in. That’s why Oasis is passionate that every community one of our Academies is part of should be a happy, healthy place where every person is included, valued, and is able to achieve their full God given potential and thrive. That’s why Oasis’ vision not only aims to deliver outstanding education, but also to help build great local neighbourhoods.

We’re motivated by our core Christian ethos which means that we believe every person – those of all faiths or none – are equally valuable and have a part to contribute in helping this vision become a reality. Helping a young person realise who they are meant to be is about more than simply the qualifications they get or the job they want; it’s about how they see themselves and those around them. That’s why Oasis’ goal is to play its part in helping to create great communities where every young person achieves their best, respects themselves, values those around them and contributes to the good of all. We look forward to welcoming you and your child to an Oasis Academy in order to experience this for yourself. Best wishes, Steve Chalke, MBE
