Hey SKY Nation! I’m ecstatic to be writing the editor’s note for this issue of the SKY Mag. It truly is an honour. The theme for this issue is temptation, something we ALL are quite familiar with. Festive is upon us, it’s the season to be jolly but it’s also the time temptation happens. Temptation is that strong urge to do something, especially if it’s bad! Temptation is everywhere. It’s part of life. We can not avoid it. The least we could do is learn to recognize when it’s at work. The trick to fighting temptation is by listening to your conscience. It’s not always easy, I know. Even I feel like my conscience and I don’t speak the same language sometimes. Just remember “doubt means no!” If you doubt it, don’t do it! SKY Nation if you remember your Shapos and your Sures you will be able to knock temptation out of the way easy squeezy. The girl on the cover wrote us an awesome story about her experience with temptation, check it out in the mag. You could learn a thing or two, I know I did.
I am pretty sure we’ve been following the SKY radio drama, Matswaka Bae (that I star in, I play Lerato!). That’s another typical scenario of what temptation can do to you if you are not careful. I mean yes she got laughed at in that moment but in the end turns out she dodged a bullet! A huge one for that matter! I am a hands-on kinda girl. If you are just like me this mag is just what you need to get you through the festive. We have lots of amazing DIY gift ideas and ideas of ‘things to do’ to ensure a fun-filled festive season. Happy Christmas and happy 2017 people! Remember, temptation is real! #STAYWOKE
Love, Kago :)

Dear Rosinah, Wow, you’ve just started high school and you’re probably going through a lot of changes right now. New school, new country and being away from home for the first time. All of this must be pretty hard on you, but don’t worry - you’ll be sure to make new friends and adjust to the new environment. I bet you must be feeling a bit insecure about your body and how other people see you, don’t worry you’re beautiful just as you are and there’s no need to try and look like the models you see on TV and magazines. I know you might be worried about how you’ll handle life’s challenges without your parents or sisters around. I’m sure there are plenty of other people around to help guide you through those challenges like your friends and the boarding matron. I heard you feel betrayed because someone really close to you broke your trust and hurt your feelings. I

would like for you to remember that there is no one that’s perfect and we all make mistakes, please find it in your heart to forgive her and patch things if you can. I also heard that some of the girls at your hostel believe that smoking is really cool, it is my hope and prayer that you remember all that you are SURE KA, and especially that O SHAPO KA smoking. Do you still like to play softball and go swimming? I hope you’re working really hard to become part of the school team. Sooo, the boy’s rugby team has some really hot boys, lol! I would suggest you spend more time making some great friendships, bagging yourself one can be done at a later stage ;). Besides, you probably want to spend as much time as you can discovering what your interests are and the stuff you’re really good at. Gosh I’ve got so much I would like to tell you but here are a couple of things I want you to remember: 1. No matter how bad things may seem there’s always a brighter day to look forward to 2. You can be anything you choose to be, the power lies in your hands 3. Nobody can love you better than you can love yourself. Lastly and most importantly I heard you’re doing really well at school. Keep up the good work and always do your best. I’m really proud of you.

For this issue, we asked you to tell us your stories about temptation – what were you tempted to do, how did you decide what action to take and what happened in the end? We received so many awesome stories but there could only be one winner. Read Anita’s winning story right here :) “I was always that girl who took part in all school activities and loved school and always wanted to become a leader. Soon the SRC (Student Representative Council) was started at my school... from then I just felt like the position of Vice President should be mine, and I always wanted to see my name written on a badge so that when everyone passes they see my name. So I registered myself and was selected to campaign for VP. My campaigns went well and I had gaaang fans! Soon I realised that one of the potential VPs was one well-known fella. Students knew him and he honestly did not have to work for votes unlike some of us did. I panicked but I finally just decided it was worth the try.
any more. So what I wanted to do was to badmouth him so that students would turn against him, and then plant a phone in his bag so he gets caught. I talked to my friends about this who encouraged me to plant a phone in his bag.
On the day of the election students voted for their preferred candidate and it turned out the votes went in favour of him with a difference of just one vote between him and me.
The next morning when I went to school I heard that there were going to be some specially elected students. I was so happy to hear that because I knew I was going to be a part of them. I thought about how if I actually sabotaged him and he found out, I would be suspended by now. Or maybe taken out of consideration for being a specially elected. So I believe that sometimes its better to let go, because I believe that good things will come your way. Currently we still waiting on the full list and I bet I’m in.”
I was so bitter, I actually cried that night and soon I just wanted to sabotage him. I wanted him to get into trouble, transfer out of school, do something bad so he pisses off the students so they wouldn’t want him
The day I was supposed to plant it something just came to me. I thought about the situation...What if it was him trying to sabotage me? I’d probably report him, insult him, and say all those nasty things. Now imagine if I did that to him... I’d lose all the trust my teachers have for me. So I decided not to do anything. When I got home I prayed about it and then I went to sleep.
*Guess what, SKY Nation she made the list! <3

This issue of SKY Magazine is all about temptation! And one time of year when there can be a lot of temptation is the festive season. We often have a lot of free time, and there are people around us who might be overindulging. The important thing to remember is to stay true to yourself. But what does that really mean? Well, it means that in the heat of the moment when you have to decide whether to do something or not, think to yourself “what do I really want?” That’s how to stay true, and the only person who knows that is you!
Teenage brains are weird and wonderful compared to adult brains. We actually are more creative, we have the most interesting ideas plus we have a fearless side that helps us rise to a challenge really well. But, scientists have found that although teenagers know the difference between emotional and logical decisions, we still often make our decisions based on emotion instead of logic :(
Here’s an example: if a group of your friends all decided they were going to fight another girl at your school, an adult would usually say “no, I don’t agree with fighting, I’m not going to join in” - that’s the logical decision. But a teenager might think “I love my friends and I don’t want them to think I’m rejecting them, so I’ll join in”, forgetting that she’s going against her own morals. That’s an emotional decision, and it’s not the right one. Try to think of what you would do if there was no one else around – that’s the way to a wise, logical decision :D

Here are our top tips on making great decisions:
Mag •A• zine
Practise refusing things!
Never, ever feel bad about refusing something that is not true to who you are. No one else can define your Sures and Shapos for you - after all, you are the only one who will have to live with the consequences! So, if wena o shapo ka smoking, own that fact and don’t feel ashamed to not take part. If you have a boyfriend who wants to take your relationship further but you’re not ready, never feel ashamed to refuse him. Trust us, refusing will make you look and feel powerful. And you are powerful boo <3
Sleep on it!
Harvard University did a study where half the people were asked to make a decision immediately (about which car to buy), and half the people were asked to make their decision the next morning. Can you guess what the results were? That’s right – the people who ‘slept on it’ made WAY better decisions. Your dreaming self is actually helping you out, so make your big decisions in the morning ;) even taking just 5 minutes before making a decision will improve the result <3
3
Focus on the future you…
It’s really hard to think long-term, when the present is all around you :O But when you’re faced with a decision, think of the future beautiful, intelligent, 20-year old you! How did she become that way? Well, it probably started with a great decision you can make today. Maybe that’s studying a bit every day to achieve good grades, saving a little money each month to buy the clothes you want, or choosing not to smoke, to keep yourself looking fresh and gorgeous forever. Believe us – your future self will thank you tomorrow for making good decisions today!
Introspect :)
When you think about yourself, your feelings and your actions, that’s called ‘introspection’, and it’s a great thing to do. We teenagers can feel really strong emotions, and it’s important to think about why we feel the way we do. Think about when you last felt proud – why was that, and what can you do to feel it more often? When did you last feel guilty, and what can you do to feel it less often? Take time to reflect on those feelings, baes.
2
Phone a Friend
Before rushing into any decision, consult a friend who knows you inside and out. And don’t forget to have your friends’ backs too! If you notice one of your friends is making decisions that she might regret later, talk to her about it to make sure she’s not getting pressured into anything. Let her know she has a rock steady friend in you <3

Explore your hobbies: painting, poetry club, dancing, reading, writing… Whether you are interested in writing, reading, dancing, swimming, or travelling. This is the time you can use up to explore that. Holla at some friends from school, your cousins visiting, or some kids in the neighbourhood to start up your own club, plan some trips, or form a squad. You might think you got time to do all these things, but once school starts and you have to juggle everything happening in your life, you’ll find that time goes by so fast. So use up this time to explore your other interests to grow and build a foundation as early as possible. You can check out DIY activities you can try featured on page 17 of this very mag. Take it one step at a time. The more you practice, the better you get. The more you watch dance videos, train your body and learn some choreographies online, or even from your friends, the better you get at the craft. So don’t waste any time, start now and get it going, your future self will thank you for it.

Keep healthy: joining a sport, exercising with friends When the holidays come we usually tend to lazy around, and eat all day, which may not have great results come January. Joining a sport like a dance crew, or a holiday basketball team, swimming, or just taking walks or going for a run with friends can help cure boredom. This can be one way to keep a healthy lifestyle, keep energetic and lively, and also have time with your buddies. Keeping a healthy lifestyle comes with a discipline towards what you eat, drink, your rest, and your thoughts. You gotta eat a balanced diet, drink more water, have enough rest, keep positive thoughts, and remember to stay smoke free. Your 2017 self will thank you for this one. #Slay

So school is out, the holidays are in, and it’s about to get lit! Aweh!!
Have you been wanting to join a sport for the longest time? Is there a book you’ve been pushing back on reading just because you couldn’t find the time to? Or is there a show you’ve been recording and couldn’t watch during school nights? Well it’s that time of the year again where you may find yourself bored, with nothing to do, and you just wanna pass time. This is the time when a lot of us teens tend to go out searching for things to do to cure boredom and we end up in situations we cannot get ourselves out of just from being tempted to living up to being young, and wild, and free. Well, don’t worry, we got you. Here are some awesome and great things you can do over the holidays to keep your positive vibes going either alone, with your squad, or just with the fam.
3
Binge watch all your fave TV shows Schools days can suck sometimes because we gotta go to bed early, we got homework, and some studying to do and all. Well, the holidays are here and you got so much time to bond with your friends, cousins, or siblings by binge watching all your fave shows on TV. You can keep up with the Kardashians or get some cooking tips from master chef junior all you want without having to worry about submitting your essay the next day or reading for a test. Sometimes lazying around with a bag of popcorn and those close to you watching TV is a good way to relax, share some laughs, or even to have some me time. This may also help you stay away from all the pressures and temptations going on around town over festive.
4
Volunteer at an organisation of your interest Volunteering can help in gaining skills, knowledge and expertise. Giving others your time brings you interesting and challenging opportunities that might not come along otherwise. This experience can be added to your resume and could result in a better paying job in the future. It is also an excellent way to explore your likes and dislikes. If you’re interested in a new career, volunteer in the field first to see if you will actually like it. Volunteering is not just about visiting an orphanage and playing with kids, you could assist in their gardens, have an arts and craft class, or volunteer at an animal shelter. You can do this with a friend or a cousin. Great way to spend time with other people and share memories over the holidays.

Well, the festive season is upon us again and we wanna make sure we look on point in January, right? Here are some tips to make sure that you emerge freshfaced in 2017 saying “I woke up like this” ;)
Try to keep to a (sort of) timetable. Make sure you get between 7 and 8 hours of sleep every night to stay looking fresh and healthy. There’s a little trick to sleep as well – every hour you get before midnight is worth 2 after midnight. So try to make sure you sleep before 12 to keep yourself bouncy in the morning :D
Recognise temptation The festive season is full of unhealthy temptations – there’s so much food everywhere, people are having parties, you might go new places and meet new people… remember, SKY Girls who are over 18 can legally drink, smoke and have sex, but that doesn’t mean you should take these decisions lightly. You want to emerge in 2017 with your dignity and self-respect intact, girl.
28
Now is the time to pamper yourself! Make yourself a facial scrub using brown sugar in olive oil, or a facemask out avocado and honey. Use a moisturizing hair treatment, clip and paint your nails, or scrub your feet and slather them with lotion. You could even organize a pampering night with your girlfriends where you pool your products and emerge feeling fabulous ;)
Exercise! Just 30 minutes of light exercise a day will build you up from the inside, and you’ll feel healthy and beautiful in January <3 Choose a sport or exercise you enjoy, and schedule it in. It will help ground you through the holidays too, which will make them feel even longer!
Give your mind a break :) After the stress of end-of-year, your mind needs a well-deserved rest. If you are worrying about your exam results, plan something to take your mind off it. Meet a friend, read a book, watch a movie :) or, check out our ‘things to do in the holidays’ guide on pages 14 and 15 :D Happy festive SKY Nation <3

We’re talking temptations in this issue, and one of the things that can tempt teens is smoking. You deserve to know the facts…
Boys prefer girls who don’t smoke the world
Research from across that boys prefer (including BW) shows The weird thing e. girls who don’t smok friends started eir th is, some girls say eir crush. Shame, smoking to impress th d out on their they could have misse future husband :O

Most teens don’t smoke
In fact 90% of teenagers in Botswana don’t smoke. This is from research done by thousands of BW teens. It might seem like more, but that’s just because smokers stand out and you remember them. Think of how many people in your class actually smoke… we bet it’s about 10% right? That means 90% don’t, whoop :D
ke Most smo tte while with e r first ciga s… Even if your d n ie nice their fr ying to be e tr is d th frien , e g you on by offerin ou can do is to y g best thin litely :) You’ll be o p it ards, refuse self after w r u o y f o d ean prou doesn’t m trust us. It’s a myth that popular people smoke
The 10% of teens who do smoke are not the popular kids, the rich kids or even the naughty kids. They’re all kinds of people who fell into a trap and need our help to get out (Y) In the USA, 97% of teens say that smoking is not cool, but that doesn’t mean we should judge smokers. Just be a smoke-free role model and show them they don’t need it <3

Tebogo Lebotse Sebego is the Chief Communications and Public Relations officer at Mascom, as well as the President of the Botswana Netball Association. She says ‘I believe netball is my calling and an addiction that I willingly let myself indulge in’. She is part of the team that successfully bidded for the World Netball Youth Cup to be held in Gaborone, in 2017!

So, the Netball World Youth Cup is being held in Botswana! Tell us a bit about that - what do we have to look forward to? It’s certainly a dream come true. We can look forward to 9 fantastic days of netball from the best young netballers around the world. This is a family-friendly atmosphere, and it will be great for making life long friendships. Please tell us about team Botswana. Our team is young, ambitious and ready to host the world. For them wearing the #BlueBlack&White on home soil in the very first World Youth Cup in Africa is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. What advice would you give to an aspiring athlete? You have to have passion, passion & more passion. You have to love and be loyal to your sport of choice. Trust that and everything else will come naturally. As an athlete only your best will do.
In-keeping with the theme of this issue, what is your number 1 tip to resist negative temptation? I would say be true to your inner voice, it always knows what’s wrong or right. Listen to it and don’t ignore it What is your favourite Christmas memory of all time? As a child, every Christmas we would go to the cattle post to visit my grandparents and then go watch “dikwaere We got new clothes every Christmas. Any last words to the ‘SKY Nation’? With a positive attitude, impossible doesn’t exist. The challenge for young girls to achieve is even higher now. Please please, study hard, make your own money because being a “trophy wife/ girlfriend, blessee just ain’t cute!
You’re a woman of many talents. What has been the highlight of your career, and when have you felt the most challenged? There have been many highlights, I would say that my current work with the community gives me so much joy. Being assigned the Tsena Online project has been challenging, but it has provided so much learning too.

6 Wear what you want
University is probably the last chance you get to dress however you want, without being judged on whether you look professional or not, so take out those sweat pants and sweater and do you.
2 3
4 5
7
Don’t skip class
As disappointing as that may sound, you need to remember why you are in school and that you’re wasting about P500 P800 per class you miss depending on your course.
Your first year in university may be one of the most scary and nervewrecking things you experience in your life (well at least in your young adulthood). If you’re like the best of us you’re probably going to make a lot of mistakes and have a whole lot of embarrassing moments but here are a few tips about how to make university the best and most memorable years of your life.
Make use of learning facilities
Who doesn’t like free WiFi? The library is a great place to get free WiFi and it’s a good place to study and do projects.
Take up an internship or job
An internship is a great way for you to be able to see how things actually are in the real world and how it is to work in that industry. It’s a great way of gaining experience and making money, plus it will look good on your résumé.
8
Use your time wisely
It’s really important that you learn how to balance your school work, social life and everything else. I can never emphasize this enough, college is not all about academics, but know when to draw the line when it comes to social events.
It’s not like high school
Your study is self-driven, no one is there to give you reminders about homework. As nerdy as it may sound, grab a book in your spare time. It can make a huge difference.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
You’ll be shocked by the amount of people you can get help from, who might also need help from you in the future. Another solution if you feel like your friends can’t help you is to go to the lecturer and ask for help.
Never hesitate to join college activities
As much as good marks matter, making memories matters too. Join as many clubs as you can, it’s a great way to have fun and make friends and memories at the same time.
op i
9
Find your circle
Make friends so that if you’re absent for any reason your friends can help you catch up with the work that you missed.
10
Learn to be open
In college you’re going to meet people from many cultures, religions and traditions, so learn how to be open to accepting people as they are and don’t be discriminative.
SKY Girls, get out there! Have fun, reach your goals and create memories <3

Earth Signs Earth signs are said to be grounded and the ones that bring us down to earth. They are mostly realistic but they can also be very emotional. They are practical, stable, and they stick by their people through their hard times. Earth signs are: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.
TAURUS April 20 - May 20 Taurus are unpredictable people who can be calm one minute and hype the next. Though down to earth, they have this vibe of being on top of the world. Remember, communication is key in any relationship, try to express your thoughts and ideas to those around you to maintain peace and understanding. It’s the end of the year, look back at what you have achieved or failed to achieve and put it into perspective. Don’t worry, we believe you got this. Just stay true and keep moving.
VIRGO August 23 - September 22 Full of energy and positive vibes. You are one person who is dedicated to proving yourself and being the best in everything. This is an amazing trait to have especially when it comes to reaching your goals and succeeding. Be careful not to exhaust yourself. Festive is here and full of exciting things to do. Relax, get some rest, and have some me time. 2017 is coming and you wanna be up and ready to slay.
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 19 Girl you got so much humour and you love to joke. You are one of those that if someone offered you a cigarette you would just laugh about it and move on. This is a pretty cool skill to have. Remember, it’s OK to be serious sometimes to make sure your voice is heard especially when saying NO. Go festive and people are happy and excited. There’s nothing wrong with taking a step back to see where you fit and keep company of people with good intentions. Happy festive love.
34
Air Signs Air signs are said to be rational, social, friendly, and analytical. They love communication and good relationships with other people. They also enjoy giving advice, but they can be a bit superficial. Air signs are: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.
GEMINI May 21 - June 20 You are one person who has good relations with people and many can come to you for a chat about anything. Just like Sagittarius, you are considered as cool and pretty dope. This is a period of excitement filled with so many temptations, people around may suggest you join them for some fun. Just be aware of who you are and what you want and don’t want. The holidays will be just as amazing.
LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Libra are kind and sweet. You love people and love creating friends. You’re gonna have so much time to create new relationships over the holidays. Remember though, choose your friends wisely to share beautiful memories with. True friends don’t pressurise other friends to do things that are not true to them. Stay true to you and keep calm.
AQUARIUS January 20 - February 18 You are one girl who slays! You got yourself and you got others back. You love to have fun and keep a crowd that vibes with you. Your friends love you because you can stand up for them and have their back. Keep recognizing those moments to help out your friends who may need their confidence boosted in their times of temptations. Remember to also take care of you. 2017 is going to be your year of more slaying. #StayWoke
SKYSCOPES - pressures
Fire Signs Fire signs are said to be passionate, dynamic, and unpredictable. They get angry quickly, but they also forgive easily. Fire signs are said to be adventurous, physically strong, and intelligent. The fire signs are: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.
ARIES March 21 - April 19 Aries are happy people who are generous and kind. Feel free to spread the beautiful happy spirit this festive girl. Being generous could attract people who may want to exploit your kindness. So be careful not to give too much of yourself to people who do not appreciate your generosity. Being kind does not also mean accepting anything and everything so as to not hurt someone else. It’s OK to say No to the things you don’t want even if a friend offered.
Water Signs Water signs are said to be exceptionally emotional and ultra-sensitive. They can be as mysterious as the ocean itself. They enjoy deep conversations and are always there to support their loved ones. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.
