Jessie J Who you are I stare at my reflection in the mirror Why am I doing this to myself? Losing my mind on a tiny error, I nearly left the real me on the shelf. Don’t lose who you are in the blur of the stars! Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing, It’s okay not to be okay. Sometimes it’s hard to follow your heart. Where natural hair and youth empowerment are

A one-of-a-kind hair salon that prioritizes the care and styling of natural hair, though we still welcome all hair types. Afrobella was inspired by the group, or we can say a movement called NHBots. This movement was established by Fify Loewen, the Portrait Photographer, to help women come together and learn more about their natural kinky hair. During our interactions Afrobella realized that there was a need for natural hair salon since a lot of naturalistas encountered challenges when we go to local salons - either you are convinced to relax or sometimes they can shame you, telling you how difficult your hair is and so on! The creator is a 23-year-old, ambitious woman named Connie Maikutlo Golekanye. She says: “I am 100% owning the business and my mum is the main investor. Since she’s been in the business world I approached her and asked if she was interested in putting up some money in the business and she immediately said yes and she’s always willing to take risks… As you are aware starting a new business that has never been done before, its difficult to approach the banks for funding, as nobody will believe in your unique concept. Funding is one of the challenges. Since we are a start-up, we want to grow our business by stocking up all kinds of hair products used by naturalistas. Having to train hair stylists whose been used to using chemicals and relaxers on clients is another challenge, as is dealing with the unknown- not knowing how long the business will exist, how profitable my business will be, will I be able to get a pay check? And of course, attracting and retaining customers Being a director is not an easy thing. I no longer have my personal time, my personal space has been replaced by my business, but it’s good because I am also a hands-on director. The staff of the salon are all youth and together, in a familylike manner, they push the brand to the highest limits treating all customers with love and supporting them by sharing all the knowledge they have regarding natural hair.”

So we are on this beautiful journey with our hair, learning how to love and nurture our precious curls, and as we know our hair is pretty sensitive so it needs extra care at all times. To help you along we have come up with some do’s and don’ts that will help you with your hair journey for strong, healthy and growing hair.

’T

Do’s and Don’ts of natural hair

DON

DO

Don’t 1. Don’t think, or say bad things about your natural crown! 2. Don’t wash hair that hasn’t been dentangled and don’t comb dry or soaking wet hair 3. Avoid too much manipulation when it comes to your natural hair 4. Don’t wash your hair every day and when you do don’t use altering shampoos as these tend to strip your hair of moisture 5. Minimize or avoid heat therapy and chemicals like relaxant and dyes on your hair. 6. Don’t tie your hair back too tightly - this pulls at the roots and is very damaging 7. Too much of anything is damaging, don’t use too much protein on your hair.

1. Embrace your hair and texture 2. Use combs made from natural fibers as well as wide tooth combs when detangling hair to prevent breakage 3. Read the ingredients of the products you use and follow the instructions 4. Use moisturizing products and apply from roots to tips. 5. Trim your hair regularly 6. Deep condition every week 7. Co-wash your hair to give your hair added moisture for kinky types 8. Explore natural 100% organic methods

This are just some of many important do’s and don’ts regarding your natural hair to assist you. For more information or hair counselling contact Afrobella on 72526426. For hair assessments book an appointment with Afrobella on 74900901. Your hair and its health, just like your body, soul and mind, is your ‘wealth!’

Letter to my

14-Year-Old Self Dear Beata What a strong girl you have become! Teenagers are exploratory and life is an adventure. You were a child of the 70’s but you have survived drug addiction, teenage pregnancy and of course the need to belong. You have dared to be different, especially at a time when everybody wanted to fit in. You lived during the days of pop, rock, reggae and when smoking weed was cool. There was no HIV and AIDS but no one wanted to be called a slut so teenagers preserved their virginity. I am happy that you said NO to all those advances from ‘blessers’. You can’t begin to comprehend it but ‘blessers’ and their habits are as old as the hills and you heeded the advice to desist them. Being different was not easy as you missed out on those intimate details shared by your friends about their escapades. But as a tomboy, you hung out with boys and this made you a late bloomer. But how wonderful it was to write those beautiful love letters and poems for your friends to their boyfriends. That turned into your lifeline and career. You reveled in playing with words for the fun of it and eventually this hobby put bread on the table. Who would have thought your hobby would become the best selling newspaper in the county and provide job security to those who have a passion for words! How sad it was when you lost your mother at 16 and you thought it was the end of the world. Life is full of pitfalls and potholes but this should not deter you from dreaming. No one can dream for you and no one can take away your ability to dream. But turn those dreams into reality and remember that everything is possible if you work hard and smart. Please persevere in your studies and if you fail, do not give up. Many have despaired when success was just around the corner. Never give up. Always aim high and strive to win. That extra work you put into your school work will determine who you will become. Strive for fulfillment, happiness and success. You have turned into a beautiful, successful and confident woman. I am proud of you! Embrace the challenges and opportunities of life but most of remember that love and peace makes the world go round. That’s what life is all about.

With exam time here, lots of us are looking to the future and wondering how we achieve everything we want to achieve! Setting goals is a great way to start off on the right track. We all set goals for ourselves but how do we make sure we reach them? This is a question most of us ask ourselves, so here are a few tips on how to set SMART goals and SLAY them!

23

Mag •A• zine

SPECIFIC

MEASURABLE

Try to set specific goals instead of general goals, because they are easily achievable. For example, your goal may be to change the world but it would be easier to have “volunteer at an orphanage” as a goal which

It would be so cool if you could measure your progress on the goal you have set. You know why? Because it motivates you to keep pushing towards the goal. So next time you set a goal, ensure you can measure it. For example with studying, instead of saying ‘study more’, you can actually track how much you have covered from your textbook.

1 ATTAINABLE

REALISTIC

4

2

3

We would all love to be Gigi Hadid or Kendall Jenner but it is better to set goals that you could possibly achieve while staying true to yourself. Attainable goals are encouraging because you have a great driving force as you know that YOU CAN ACHIEVE them. For instance, your goal could be getting a higher grade in your next test! Every ‘small’ goal achieved is a step in the right direction.

The more realistic a goal is, the more likely you are to achieve it. If you would like to own a large clothing store one day, you can set your goal as learning how to improve your designs and overtime this motivates you to work hard in knowing all about retail.

TIMELY Putting a time constraint on a goal pushes you to work hard in order to achieve it. See it as a finish line, such as I want to finish two chapters of my novel by the end of today. Remember not to compare your goals with other people, keep it steady moving in

5

your own lane and know that you are SURE KA REACHING YOUR GOALS ;)

#SLAY

What are your SMART goals? Write them down today :)

Make flash cards based on the syllabus requirements. Your syllabus will usually dictate a whole bunch of definitions and formulas expected - so use those to make flashcards or word bank to stick on your walls so that you see them all the time, and your brain can take in the info subconsciously on a daily basis. For diagrams, draw them over and over to get it right.

3

Do as many past papers as you can because examiners like to repeat questions, even those for practicals so you understand the skills necessary

5

Organize your study time using the Pomodoro method - this separates your work into tasks for a certain period of time and allows you to complete a whole lot of work :)

Make sure you understand what you’re studying, don’t cram too much otherwise you will forget your facts.

If you don’t understand something, form a little study group that’s not more than 4 and discuss questions or topics you feel you’re weak on. Ask for help from other students and teachers, you can’t do it all alone. Plus, explaining something you already know helps you remember it!

10

2

After reading something, make notes and take pride in them. Making your own notes as well as making them look pretty or presentable motivates you better to look at them and read more.

Study a topic a day, then after a few weeks, repeat. If you haven’t started already, start now.

6

7

SKY

ps

1

25

Balance your life. Study smart, have enough rest, eat well, take a walk, see your family, and stay focused.

8 9

Use colourful pens and paper when writing down short notes.

Read out loud to yourself - if it will help! If you need to read in the quiet, wait till everyone is asleep or wake up early.

Bonus

Believe in yourself. Take a deep breath and do your best.

TSHIAMO BADISANG Course: Entrepreneurship and Business Leadership at BAC (Botswana Accountancy College) Requirements: Pass BGCSE/ IGCSE in a minimum of 6 subjects, including Mathematics and English Language (minimum of 11 points in Mathematics and English combined) After graduating: You could become an entrepreneur or consultant. Aim to get a placement with LEA, CEDA, Banks, Kgalagadi Breweries to mention a few. What I enjoyed about the course: This major is broad and one learns all of the aspects of running a business all at once... It gives an idea of what happens in all the departments of a business, e.g. marketing, finance, HR etc, when one has studied this course... Advice: This route is for spontaneous, open-minded, driven, confident, ambitious, innovative and most importantly hard working. It is a major that test all the aspects related to one being a leader and an entrepreneur.

26

GAONE MOSETLHO Course: Double major in Sociology and Environmental science, (Cartography and Environmental Hazards), Humanities Faculty, University of Botswana Requirements: 36 points are needed After graduating: You could become a research officer, EIA officer (env. courses) surveyor (land board). Or, you could even become a teacher, if you choose to take a PGDE for 1 additional year. What I enjoyed about the course: Nothing, it’s the truth because unfortunately it wasn’t what I wanted to study. Advice: Do something that you Iove!

SKY

R COURSES

Mag •A• zine

GAONE MANATONG Course: Sociology and English, University of Botswana Anthropology and Literature, Kalamazoo College U.S.A (Exchange programme) Requirements: UB required points: 36 Points for University of Botswana course, and a GPA of 3.7 for the student exchange programme After graduating: You can later work as an HR, a researcher, a PR officer, a social worker, and probably go into communications. This also depends on the different courses you take throughout your undergraduate studies. Studying English grammar and literature is the best way to improve your writing skills as a scholar. What I enjoyed about the course: Sociology is basically the study of social problems. If you’re interested in research, learning about the different issues in our societies, and coming up with solutions for social change, this is your field. Advice: You should also consider going to study abroad which requires you to do well in school. Search for schools and scholarships online. UB also offers study abroad opportunities. Research, ask questions, and apply. Polish up your CV right now to put yourself in a better position. You can also inbox me @GaoneMK and I can send you different links for scholarships abroad.

PALESA NKHASI Course: Marketing, Business Faculty, MANCOSA (Management College of Southern Africa). Requirements: About 40 points are required to get into this course After graduating: After graduating, one can get work in PR, Communications and any other businessrelated jobs. What I enjoyed about the course: I got to learn about the importance of paying attention to detail and also how marketing is necessary for good and services to actually generate revenue Advice: To anyone wanting to take this route, you should be open-minded and hardworking because Marketing is a practical course and demands one to be passionate and attentive.

Truee Lif

Tuduetso So many times we choose to forget who we are, so many times we choose to find ourselves in other people. I want to share a little bit about myself. This is one of my stories, not anyone else’s but mine, and I’m happy to share it with you. Remember, It’s important to always ask yourself this question, “Does it make me happy?” And be honest with yourself because no one else is listening but you. 2015, I took it upon myself to know more about my culture because it’s something that’s always been of great interest to me. I used to find myself asking questions like, “What do I mean when I say I am a proud Motswana child?” And Bojale for me came across as a part of our culture that I wanted to experience. It’s a part of our history and heritage that no one can take away from us but ourselves. Luckily for me, because Balete had just revived the practice

30

Tru Stor

SKY Sisters ref years with SKY

about three years before I decided to go, I made part of the group for the year 2015. Years had passed without much activity in that area so I could go even at 27. And yes, I was one of the youngest. I shared my intentions with my dad and my uncle, who then told the rest of the family, who were all very supportive. I’ve always really went with what I felt strongly about so this didn’t come as a surprise. Being brave enough to do what you know makes you happy is the best feeling ever. I remember some ‘stranger’ lady asking me what a city girl is doing mo dilong tsa Setswana. I wanted to laugh. Honestly, what does that mean? Am I not a Motswana? Am I not proud of my roots? Is Setswana for a select few? It was 30 days of culture and tradition, away from city life. Setswana sa rona. A beautiful story of the Balete tribe, my people. It is my story. It is who I am, and

what has contributed to me being the woman I am today. I stand tall (as short as I am… lol!), proud that in me lives my people’s story, in me is what I believe in. #thisisme #myjourney #myculture #mypeoplesstorylives

When writing your life story, remember who you are writing about and never apologise for being you. From my Bojale experience I learnt that, in everything that you do, remember that you are different from the next person, embrace that difference and enjoy being different because that’s what defines you. We can’t all be the same. It would be such a boring world with no amazing stories to tell.

Throughout my schooling life, Primary (shoutOut Kopano Primary School, mine-town glory and Thornhill Primary School, to Legae Academy to the University of Botswana) my curiosity led me to different learning paths of my life, met different influential people, the bad the good, the ugly, the things your parents tell you to stay away from, the ones you don’t expect to meet up with, I saw most of it! But thankfully I was just there for the viewing party, I never partook, mainly because of my mother. I didn’t understand then what I know now, but she was protecting me, guys listen, if mom says nope, you not gonna go to Teen Zone (it was hot in our time) till you finish your exams, then best believe the second you put down that pen, put on that dress and

head out, you’re gonna have a blast, cos you’re not on stolen time! I’m grateful for my parents, and my friends! It’s taken me 20 somewhat odd years to figure out what these creatures actually are, but I’m thankful I took my time to knight them as fitting! The friends you keep determine your outcome, hang around like-minded people, my friends picked me up when they saw I was slacking in school. My friends were pretty intelligent people when we were growing up, the A* students, the position 1, and I was the average joe, made it through class, merely drifting through my days, until I was faced with actually being called AVERAGE, that word cut me deep, why couldn’t I ever be number 1? Why can’t my name be on the A* list, when you want something you FIGHT, I fought so hard, my friends pushed me so

hard, I remember my teacher giving me a letter at school to give to my parents, I was so scared like what have I done now..my mom is gonna kill me, and it was a letter inviting them to the prize giving at school, I was being honored with SECOND Position in MATH!! Man! I felt untouchable, I couldn’t wait to let them know, I was so proud of myself, guys there’s no better feeling, than knowing you killed the game, you put your best out there and someone recognised your efforts, and believe me you, someone always recognises...

Truee Lif Eat ‘Right’

1.

Maintain a balanced diet as much as you possibly can. Eating the right amount of all vitamins not only benefits your physique but it stimulates your mind. When studying, snacking is a go-to :) Having the right snacks as you take your study breaks will enhance your studying without filling you up until you feel bloated or too full to study. For example blueberries, walnuts, almonds and dark chocolate could be helpful!

2.

Keep Hydrated

Water is the one medicine for all ills and is always encouraged. Dehydration leads to fatigue and having a bottle of water at your study desk will discourage the yawns and sleepiness that normally comes with trying to study. It will also help you keep a clear mind.

Ment

Heal It is relatively easy to maintain physical health – so most of the time we overlook our mental health. Taking care of how we think is really important. As the exam season approaches, we want you, our SKY Nation, to be in the right state of mind to get the results that you have worked hard for throughout this year. Here are a few tips to stay healthy especially during exams!

Take Active Breaks

32

3.

Taking a walk or doing a few exercises is a great way to de-stress as you prepare for your examinations. Fresh air will help you to clear your mind and keep you calm so that you can focus better when you get back to studying.

Talk to Someone

4.

Whenever you are feeling pressure or even stressed about writing your examinations, it is always advisable to talk to someone, preferably older than you. It may be a sister, a friend, a teacher or a guidance counsellor. All these people have passed through the same stage you are currently at and they can reassure you that it will be alright.

Rest and Stay Calm

Getting enough rest during the exam season is vital. Try to sleep for 8 hours every night especially during your exams so that your energy levels are high when it is time to write the exam. Additionally, remind yourself of the hard work you have put in this entire year and take a deep breath – IT WILL END SOON. Treat every exam as though it is any regular test so that you do not feel any pressure. Finally, once you walk out of the exam room, FORGET ABOUT THAT PAPER! It will do you no good trying to discuss the exam and figure out the answers you possibly forgot to write. Keep Calm #SKYNation and be SURE KA PASSING YOUR EXAMS!

zz

z

If the stress is getting too much, always talk to an adult about your problem. And remember, you can always send the skygirlsbw Facebook page an inbox message if you have any problem. A problem shared is a problem halved! <3
