This issue’s guest editor of SKY Magazine is Louise Mandumbwa, an 18 year old SKYgirl from Francistown. She’s a freelance photographer and a passionate member of Junior Chamber International. Hi, SKY Nation ☺ Half the time I think of myself as a girl in progress, because I’m always trying to learn and grow and find ways to challenge myself. When I became a SKY girl a year ago, words couldn’t describe how ecstatic I was at the prospect at getting to interact with beautiful and motivated girls who like me, were just trying to figure life out. One of the beautiful things about SKY is that it’s about being part of a community that allows us to celebrate who we are and what we stand for. SKY-Fam realise that we’re most awesome when we embrace every aspect of what inspires us. I know countless girls who giggle over nail polish or will get into pillow fights, but in their spare time

Mag •A• zine

volunteer with organizations like Rotary, or learn sign language to help out at a deaf school or stand up for people that can’t do it themselves; girls that light up the most when they’re striving to make their schools, communities and homes a better place, and dedicate their hustle to grasping every opportunity that presents itself to do something meaningful. Girls (and guys) like that? They’re the real MVPs, just by being the amazing pacesetters they’ve always been. Aloud. Steve Jobs once said “The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that do. Do you. Be shameless and stay true to yourself. ☺ So, this one is most definitely for the trailblazers, innovators and the dreamers in us all. In the words of the brilliant Marian White “It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?”

Love, Louise

In ‘Do Remember Me’, teenagers in the USA got to Skype with teens from around the world, including Nigeria, Egypt and France. The point of all this was so to share stories between cultures.

Men and Boys for Gender Equality - MBGE shares stories about ways that men and boys can be more involved in family life and bigging up their sisters’ achievements. Whenever we see guys stepping up on issues affecting both men and women, our heart gets a big :) This reminds us a LOT of our #SKY_Guy brothers ;)

Memory Banda, 18, from Malawi and Achie, 16, from Ethiopia believe that girls should be allowed to grow up and go to school, not be married off as young as 11, which is the case in some traditions. They got the opportunity to speak at the United Nations 59th Commission Status of Women as part of the Let Girls Lead initiative. SKY <3s girls who stand up for other girls!

12 year old Mo’ne Ikea Davis is an American Little League Baseball pitcher from the USA. She has a new book out called ‘Mo’ne Davis: Remember My Name’, a shoe line to benefit girls in need, and there are rumours of a biopic film on its way from the Disney Channel called ‘Throw Like Mo.’ *Whoop, whoop*

20 year old Asisat Lamina Oshoala is a Nigerian footballer who has recently made history as the first African player to play in the Women’s Super League, joining Liverpool Ladies! <3 She says at the beginning, her parents weren’t supportive but she said “This is what gives me happiness” and she stayed true to her goals … *Whoop, whoop* We’re rooting for you :D

Tsotsi Babhino The girl who is always true to herself is very smart, therefore she deserve all the love and care:) she has a stand that balances her ways. Girls who know themselves are always self- motivated... I really respect that kind of gal, and to all those who know what they want in lyf, I shout out to them... SKY

:D The SKY Nation is chuffed that we have SKYGuy brothers who are rooting for our “True to myself” mission! :D *whoop, whoop*

Brix SkyBoy Ranks I like referring to girls as ladies coz of the respect I have for them... A lady who is true to herself automatically knows what she wants, a lady who knows what she wants automatically has the confidence to be herself no matter how much pressure is put against her.... She knows how a lady should behave /take herself ga ana le batho ba bangwe, she respects herself, she doesn’t give up on what she wants until she gets it, she is the strongest of all ladies, she doesn’t let other people dictate her life for her, she makes her own decisions about her life... Most importantly, she knows when to say, “No, ke shapo”.... She is the most respected in the community... She is a real woman and we as real men respect ladies like that...

P-Man Pantsula La Mrepa

Kabelo Clinton Tyson Tladinyane Well, I think a girl who is true to herself is autonomous. I respect her a lot coz if she is true to herself, she builds a good atmosphere around her & she is aware of what’s right & wrong:) & she can block out negative vibes around her... If she is true She will also be assertive & able to stand her ground without any shame:) she will be sure of what she would do & what she would not do:) I wud in a nutshell say: she is the queen of herself & also acts according to what she knows is right.

A gal who knows what she wants is stable and self-confident, she makes a choice and sticks to it... I respect a gal who is not pressurised by her peers or who make decisions to please their friends. I value girls who respect their bodies, other people and being friendly towards each other...

Thabo Dima When you get to understand each and every aspect of yourself whether physically or inside as a person, you get to have confidence and trust in your capabilities and you also get to know your limitations as a person. In this manner nobody can bring you down for any flaw that you are already aware of, Also no one can force or influence you into something that at the end of the day will not be focused towards building you. My message to the #SKYNation is to understand yourself, it all begins with you in the mirror!

they also saw my capabilities. So i joined the radio competition

such as being bullied so it was an opportunity i could not

for other youngsters who’ve experienced alot of challenges

me and saw the potential I had (not that i doubted myself) and

with hope and faith.

How did you feel when you were on radio for the first time?

book reviews My favourite book of all time is called ‘The Shack’ by William Young. This book taught me about prayer because the story reads like a prayer - filled with sweat and wonder and transparency and lots of surprises... It is an exceptional book that ushered me directly into the heart and nature if God in the midst of agonizing human suffering… This book talks about a man who is going through a lot in life. His daughter was abducted during a family vacation and evidence is found in an abandoned shack that she has been brutally murdered. Four years pass and this man receives a suspicious note, which is

Hey, sistas ;) So many of us are sure ka reading that we HAD to ask what your fave boo ks are! Tshego, Mitche and Kimberly won our book rev iew competition- read them, below- and read the boo ks they recommend, if you get the chance <3

apparently from God, inviting him to the shack for a weekend. Against his better judgement he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his worst nightmare. What he finds there changes his life forever. In our world religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant... ‘The Shack’ wrestles with this timeless question: Where is God in world filled with so much unspeakable pain? Well let me tell you that the answers I got from this book astounded me and transformed me...it made me believe that God is always there watching over us... Ke sure ka Modimo!

My favourite book is by Ben Carson, named ‘Think Big’ it gave me a different perspective of life... I used to give up on a lot of things my life; education and my family because we grow up with no father but then I talked to my friend who gave me the book to read… Truly, Ben Carson lived a life that was more difficult than I thought mine was… He showed me that without education, you can’t become what you desire; he taught me reading skills and how to move on in life and not hold on to the past. He is an inspiration to me because he made his life worthwhile, even when his parents we not on good terms… I want this book to be featured in the mag to help a young girl out there who had the same situation as mine… Now I have a bond with my family, and am doing well at school.

Most people have watched the movie, but trust me- the book is much better! It won’t take all your homework time either! (It’s only around 400 pages long)… ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ is about a teenage girl called Hazel Grace Lancester who has cancer. It will definitely get you crying, but not the sad, ‘oh no! There’s no hope, she’s dying!’ kind of tears... But the ‘what a beautiful soul she is!’ kind of tears, the ‘oh my God, I need to change my life!’ kind :D There’s also an awesome love interest, Augustus Waters, and believe me- he’ll make you believe they are not all stupid idiotic jerks, lol… It will inspire you, help you appreciate the value of your life and get you thinking ‘what can I do to make sure I don’t take my life for granted?’ Read it SKY Sisters! READ IT!

Phenyo Oaitse There was once a girl named Dimpho. The eleven year old was bullied all the time because she was overweight, and had been bullied from the age of seven. She tried telling her parents but they never paid attention and had no time because they spent most of their hours at work. Dimpho would cry herself to sleep every day because she had no friends. She kept telling herself that she was ugly and unlovable. This also affected her grades, which made her lose hope in everything, even her life. She felt like she was useless. However, Dimpho had a hidden talent that nobody, including her workaholic parents, knew about. She could sing.

She was an exceptional singer and had an angelic voice. One afternoon during the school’s lunch break, Dimpho was again made fun of by some mean girls who disliked her and thought that they controlled the school. Dimpho ran away from them and went to sit on a bench by a nearby tree, weeping.

People starting applauding. She thought they only did that cause of her singing when actually the words of the song also touched them and taught them to appreciate everyone just the way they are. Not because of how they look, but their personality, which they could relate with Dimpho’s everyday life situation.

She put on her headphones and started to play one of her favourite songs- it always motivated her to never give up on everything she does. Without realising it, Dimpho closed her eyes and got lost in the music. She started singing along to the beautiful song. She sang loudly, yet beautifully. She then opened her eyes and found half of the school staring at her in awe. She was frightened. She had never let anyone hear her sing.

Also, they were amazed by her beautiful voice! From that day, she felt better about herself, confident and assertive. She was able to make friends, and in time even her grades started improving. She’d always tell herself that only God knows why she was bullied at first, but now she had to love herself the way she was and that she was blessed with a great voice. Dimpho was all that everyone could talk about. She was blessed.

My friend’s mom passed away, last year, and she’s going through a very difficult time… What can I do to help her through it?

:) Sometimes we, or our loved ones experience difficulties in our lives, and we’re not sure what to do… Thank goodness for Big Sister SKY, who has some ideas on how to deal with life’s ‘bumps’… <3

Much respect to you for being an amazing friend and trying to help your friend. The first thing you should always do is reach out; let her know you’re there for her whenever she needs you to talk or hang out. It is also important not to be too intrusive, if she wants some time alone, give her space, making sure to check up on her regularly to make sure she’s doing well. She might feel very alone during this time, you can try to relate with her on losing loved ones and healing from it if you’ve been through it too, or help her find a way to memorialize her mother. You can plant a tree, make a scrapbook of pictures, write some letters or anything else you feel will provide closure. Ultimately, your friend needs more than anything your time and patience: if she’s falling behind in school try help her out as much as you can, offer to take her out sometimes to take her mind off things, be prepared to listen to whatever she wants to talk about if it will help her mourn, recommend help (from a counsellor, for example) if you think she needs it, and if she rejects your suggestions, give her time, and then try again. The key is to remain a loving friend <3

Everything was great when I started at my new school, but now there is a group of girls who are bullying me. They call me names, laugh at what I wear and always comment on the way I look. What should I do? Few girls go through school unaffected by one or many incidents with their peers, or even with their own friends… Don’t despair! Find a way to empower yourself :) Firstly, nothing is wrong with the way you or anybody looks or dresses, everyone is beautiful in their own way and this will never depend on anybody’s validation! A powerful tool to fight bullying is through friends; foster many great friendships, try to spend time with people from different social groups or cliques. Making friends by getting involved in extracurricular activities is also a great confidence booster. Oftentimes when your bullies try to come at you, your friends will come to your defence. If the bullying is really affecting you, talk to a school counsellor, a teacher or relative you trust. This might result in your bullies getting disciplinary action taken against them. Many girls project their own insecurities onto others by bullying; some try to create a sense of belonging in a clique by participating in this bullying. It is worth a try to calmly ask these girls why they are behaving this way. Whichever way things turn out, it’s obvious you’re a brilliant girl and if you focus on yourself, your studies and your friends your bullies will probably matter less and less until you don’t even notice them!

Volunteer!

Mag •A• zine

Doing good doesn’t make you a goodie- goodie ;)

to do Hey, SKY babes :) i used to think of volunteering as a boring and tiring thing gave me a home at ring voluntee because it is a lot of hard work, until I learnt that even ion to do and permiss few points and I finally stoped being yelled at all the time! I even got as well, get away with many things I was deprived of before! Lol! So volunteering outside into your can benefit you for what you want to do and become as you grow and mature way. ntious unprete and dreams, I like to think of it as *networking* in a humble many As well as the personal, character- building aspect of volunteering, there are you’re that cause a helping to energy and time other benefits to giving up some of your passionate about- read on ;)

1.

You get to meet different people: When you volunteer with other people, you mingle with those who are from a different background from yours, and that is a definite plus! It’s wonderful how different people can be united by a cause that they believe in :)<3

2.

YOU LEARN NEW SKILLS: You might learn sign language while volunteering with the deaf, learn how to use a new computer programme or even how to manage your time better… New experiences are often enriching and whenever you work, you learn new things :) You’ll also get the chance to have real office experience that will look great on your future CV…

3. If you’re looking forward to going to university after high school, your volunteering will look great on your application- it will demonstrate that you take initiative and shows what kind of person you are, by adding an added dimension- if you volunteer by reading to kids at a library, for example, universities will recognise your passion for sharing stories :)

I used to believe I was going to be an international dancer like Janet Jackson! I then went to dance at a school I was volunteering at, and a celebrity spotted me and asked to work with me :D Unfortunately I was too young at the time, but that is the whole idea. Be nice and be content with your humble beginnings <3

4.

You get to change the world:

In your own small way, you will be contributing to making the world a better place! Those are *superhero* vibes :D

Places you can volunteer are: * The Botswana Red Cross * The Baylor Children’s Clinic * SOS Botswana * Any other charitable organisations * A place you’d love to work when you’re done with school * And even at church, (you know you can never have too many of em blessings shugga ;) ) So be sure ka what you want to do in your life and what difference you can make in another’s life.

Offer to babysit- If you feel comfortable around younger siblings and cousins, offer to watch the munchkins while your mom or neighbour relaxes, a bit. There are fun activities you can doteach them how to play Black Mampatile (AKA hide and seek), or Safe. You can even get them to colour- not on the walls! Or sing and dance :) #FunTimes

If you’re interested in being more involved in your community, you can volunteer at a local NGO- depending on where you are in the BW, there may be an organisation doing work that you admire. Taking a little time out over the weekend, or after homework, in the afternoons, is a great way to be a hero :)

Whenever we ask the SKY Nation what you love about #SKY_Mag, so many of you have said “Letter to My 14 Year Old Self”… So, especially for you, journalist Rorisang Mogojwe wrote a bonus letter, to share her story and a word of encouragement with the SKY Nation :D <3 Dear Rori Remember how everyone laughs and thinks you are being a diva every time you tell them you are going to be a super star? Well guess what? You will have the last laugh because your star continues to shine in the media industry that you will grow to love so much. Your friends and family think you watch too much TV. But that’s ok, just tell them that that is the same TV they’ll see your face on one day! You are deeply saddened by big brother Thapelo’s passing. Having to suddenly live without him is a major blow; it makes you sad and confused and has left you with many unanswered questions. You don’t know how to handle it. But it will all get better with time, I promise. *Big hug* God sees your heart and will heal it. As a teenager, you think you know it all and that no one understands you. But that’s not true. You resent your sisters for snitching on you ko go mama le papa when you stay out late with your friends, or when you sneak

Letter to MY 14 YEAR OLD SELF out to go to that cool party when the ‘rents didn’t give you permission. They’re only trying to protect you Ro, you are their baby sister. You are still too young and rebellious to understand this, but they love you and care about you and one day you will thank them for being so hard on you. Big brother Kux is cool though, he will do anything to make you happy. Treasure all your siblings because they are your anchors; they hold you down like that. Stay close to all of them. Your deep desire to see and learn about the world will help make the choice to study media in Malaysia easy, like icing on the

cake. Mama and papa will miss you but will become the cheerleaders of your dreams. Be sure to dedicate your autobiography to them or mention them in your

thank you speech when you win those media awards. Be careful of boys Ro. Not all of them will keep their promise to love and never leave you. Don’t give your heart to just any boy because sometimes they can be careless when handling your precious cargo. Also be wary of bad friends, they will try to pull you down and influence you negatively. You are better than that. You are a people’s person, but having lots of friends isn’t always a good idea; just 2 or 3 good friends is better than a 100 bad friends. And always remember: pray every day, write what’s on your mind, smile genuinely, fall in love, read a good book, travel the world and BE HAPPY! XoXo Love Rori ☺
