The great fortified and table wines of the Douro continue to stand proudly on the world’s wine stage. However, Portugal is poised to really take off driven by the nonclassic areas which are offering modern stylish wine at very accessible prices.

Portugal has plenty of interesting native grapes to offer, the sun to ripen these grapes and in some regions cooling sea breezes which are so important for grape aromas and therefore wine aromas.

The winemaking is innovative and modern, the wine styles are international but are nuanced with local textures and flavours. We are certainly going to be hearing more about and drinking more Portuguese wines over the next few years – watch this space...
