Eine feine Gesellschaft... Möchten Sie sich von Marcela Böhm portraitieren lassen? Es wäre eine mutige Entscheidung. Böhm hebt die kleinen Schwächen und Schrullen hervor, die jeder hat. Sie tritt in ihren Gemälden dem Portraitierten nahe, und gewährt damit intime Einblicke in sein Leben. Ob bei der Morgentoilette, dem Hausputz oder dem abendlichen Dinner - stets blickt sie uns über die Schulter, und entdeckt dabei eine ungewöhnliche, sehr eigene Perspektive. Sie legt dabei eine große malerische Vielfalt an den Tag. Mit Öl- oder Wasserfarben, in großen oder kleinen Formaten bleibt ihre Handschrift unverkennbar. Das Ornament durchdringt den Vordergrund, es wird bei Marcela Böhm von der Nebenrolle zur Hauptrolle geadelt. Es bildet gleichzeitig aber auch die Kulisse für die privaten Komödien im tristen Alltag. Böhm findet die ornamentalen Muster für ihre Bilder in unseren Badezimmern, auf Tapeten und Tischdecken, auf unserer Kleidung. Während früher die Einzelportraits überwogen, rücken jetzt also gesellige Runden in ihren Focus. Merkwürdige Menschen begegnen uns in ihren Bildern, merkwürdig und doch vertraut: mal fröhlich oder melancholisch, mal spröde oder lasziv, mal exaltiert oder verinnerlicht. Die Kommunikation und die Interaktion zwischen den Personen wird dabei pointiert aufgezeichnet: In der Geselligkeit werden wir aus unserer Reserve gelockt. Und auch wenn wir bemüht sind, uns von unserer besten Seite zu zeigen, Böhm entdeckt unsere Schwächen, und zeigt unser ganz natürliches (Fehl-)Verhalten - Ein wahres Sittenpanorama.

Sweet life extracted from an essay by Christof Wolf Marcela Bรถhm paints routine scenes of daily life, in the manner of a storyteller. Stories told by means of only one painting, but in that single painting there may be more than just a story, and certainly no moral. It all depends on the viewer. For he is the one who will read it, think about it. For each viewer a different story: Is it about life? Whose life? What is happening here? Or has happened? Is the man on the couch bored to death, or merely resting? The writer Gogol might write about Marcela Bรถhm's paintings what he said about his own stories, "that the more closely you observe them, the sadder they become". The special appeal of the scenes comes from their tiny rifts. The tension for example between the wallpaper in vivid colours and the strangely pensive person in the foreground. Rarely smiling but not visibly desperate either, the figures appear reclined, relaxing, hanging out together with talking, perhaps waiting. They don't seem especially happy, nor particularly sad, it's more that they seem impassive, bordering on a frivolous decadence that brings to mind Hockney rather than Hopper. ... Yes, one could say Marcela Bรถhm's paintings are realistic. But definitely not a copy of real life. Copies don't cut it. Looking beyond the richness of detail and the often photographic points of view, the paintings give the impression of being sketches where the canvas frequently cuts off limbs and even faces. In the end, these paintings have become scraps of real life, as if a large quote. And life continues besides, behind and beyond what we see. Because life is too large to be confined to the limits of a painted story.
