English Conversation Topic 23 Talking about creativity in English
Conversation Starters Creativity is not an easy topic to discuss in English so there are only a few questions here. Take your time in answering and continue your discussion with careful follow-up questions. 1. Do you think you are a creative person? 2. Can you give examples how you are, or are not, creative? 3. Were you more creative as a child or are you more creative now? 4. What are some things that creative people can do well? 5. Who is the most creative person you know? What kind of things does he or she do?
Discussion Questions Here are a few more thoughtful questions about creativity. Remember, there are no "right" or "wrong" answers, just practice expressing your opinions in English! 1. Do you think it's possible to teach people how to be more creative? 2. What do you think is the true value of creativity in our society? 3. Do you think the number of creative people in the world is increasing or decreasing? This is the preparation material for an English conversation lesson about 'The Arts'. It includes an explanation about when to use the definite article when talking about art forms, some art vocabulary, idioms we might use when discussing the arts and some conversation questions we might use when discussing this subject. The Arts The Arts (plural) is a general term which covers many things. For example: Literature – drama, poetry, stories, biographies Performing Arts – dance, cinema, theatre, opera, concerts Fine Arts – painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography Art (singular, uncountable) usually means fine art, but can also refer to technique and creativity.
Grammar Point When we refer to a performing art in general, we can leave out the article before the noun. For example: “Are you interested in ballet/theatre/dance?” However, when we refer to a particular performance, we include the definite article. For example: “Would you like to come to the ballet/theatre/dance?” Idioms we might use when discussing the arts To blow someone away – to overwhelm a person; to excite a person very much Work of art – a good result of one’s efforts; a piece of artwork On the edge of one’s seat – to be very interested in something, usually something that is both extremely exciting and nerve-wracking. Mixed feelings - When you have mixed feelings about something, you react to it with conflicting emotions; you are happy and unhappy at the same time. There are a few art galleries in this town and exhibition halls as well. Linda- Which one would you recommend? Roy- Oh, the one with the Jack B. Yeats painting. I love that painting very much. He was a great national painter. Linda- That sounds very interesting. Which century did he live in? Roy- He did most of his important work at the beginning of the twentieth century. The main galleries are all in Dublin, however, most cities also have a smaller art gallery focusing on local and national art.
