France backs down on gay appointee to Vatican post
He became the first out coach of any men's or women's basketball team in Division I. His team opens its season next month against Duke, the defending national champion.
PARIS -- The Vatican has won a victory in its battle against LGBT rights: French President François Hollande has withdrawn the nomination of a gay man as ambassador to the Vatican.
Burns also revealed that his boyfriend when he played for Bryant was Anthony Nicodemo, now an out high school basketball coach.
This was the second time France had nominated a gay Vatican ambassador and been refused. Last January, the French government selected openly gay diplomat Laurent Stefanini for the post. Such nominations usually are approved within weeks, but by April it was apparent that the Vatican was refusing to respond to Stefanini's nomination at all. Hollande persisted for 10 months, but the French newspaper Libération reported last week that he has given up. The paper reported that a source said "It's dead." France also nominated a gay Vatican ambassador in 2007 but backed down in the face of Vatican opposition. Despite an earlier "who am I to judge" public-relations blitz to bolster his image, Pope Francis said last week in opening a church synod that samesex marriage is just a "passing fad."
Judge ruled that Hobby Lobby guilty of anti-trans bias
When he came out to his players, the reaction was generally positive. "There was an initial shock factor," senior forward Curtis Oakley told USA Today. "But everyone was like, 'Yo, Burns, we rockin' with you.' It was all love." Burns grew up in Merrimack, N.H.
Gay ambassador to Denmark weds longtime companion COPENHAGEN -- Rufus Gifford, the openly gay U.S. ambassador to Denmark, married his partner, Dr. Stephen DeVincent, last week in Copenhagen. Gifford made the announcement via Instagram: "Just married in Copenhagen where the first legal gay partnerships took place 26 years ago. Now heading back to celebrate with our friends and family from all over the world at our residence under the American flag. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined such a perfect day. Life is good."
A judge's decision from May finding Hobby Lobby guilty of violating the Illinois Human Rights Act in its treatment of a trans employee was finally made public last week.
Gifford was confirmed as ambassador in 2013. Before that, he served as a finance official for the Democratic National Committee as well as in positions with Obama for America and the Presidential Inaugural Committee.
Administrative Law Judge William J. Borah ruled that the company could not refuse to allow Meggan Sommerville to use the women's restroom at work.
The U.S. Embassy posted congratulations on its website: Stort tillykke skal lyde herfra til Ambassadør Gifford og Dr. Stephen DeVincent i anledning af deres bryllup på Kø . . .
Sommerville, the frame-shop manager at a Hobby Lobby in Aurora, Ill., for 16 years, began her gender transition in 2009. She first filed suit against her employer in 2011. Management did not fire Sommerville, and acknowledged her as a woman for most purposes after she changed her state ID and birth certificate in 2010. Sommerville has fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition that requires her to use the restroom frequently. Last year the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in a case involving Hobby Lobby that "closely held corporations" can practice religious discrimination against employees by using line-item vetoes to deny health-insurance coverage that the owners say violates their beliefs.

Police said the attack did not appear to be terrorist-related nor linked to the French train incident, but was not random. They described it as "nightliferelated." Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone, the only person injured in the attack that occurred in the middle of an intersection, was stabbed in the torso after drinking with three women and another man at Badlands Dance Club, a source told the Sacramento Bee. Media mogul backs Repub who called equality 'Marxist' Right-wing media czar and News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch has tweeted his support for Ben Carson in the GOP presidential primary. Carson has claimed marriage equality is a Marxist plot and compared same-sex couples to conjoined twins. Murdoch owns Fox News, where Carson previously worked as a contributor. Murdoch's tweet set off a media firestorm because it included the comment "What about a real black president who can properly address the racial divide?" Not only were people quick to point out the insult to President Obama, but many noted that to "properly address the racial divide" as Murdoch advocates would leave black people's opinions out of the equation. In Carson's new book, he wrote "Changing the law governing the normal situation in order to accommodate the abnormal situation is like requiring that car seats be designed to accommodate conjoined twins as well as anatomically normal children. "Most people are heterosexual, and changing the definition of marriage to suit those outside that definition is unnecessarily complicated."

Puerto Rico OKs skirts for boys in school uniforms SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Puerto Rico's education minister announced this week that the commonwealth's school uniform code has been changed to allow boys to wear skirts. Rafael Roman confirmed that the policy is designed to be more LGBT inclusive. Puerto Rico requires all students to wear uniforms unless there is a medical exemption. The new rules allow students of any gender to wear either a skirt or trousers to class without risk of punishment. It's another step forward for Puerto Rico's LGBT citizens, who gained marriage equality on July 17.

Raven-Symoné -- the textbook example of a racist knothead
By R.D. Smith GUEST COLUMNIST I'm not big on "white-splaining" to black people, but Raven-Symoné has to be the biggest idiot in showbiz right now. And a racist idiot at that. During her appearance on "The View" last week, the subject was Americans making racist assumptions based on names. And Raven-Symoné -- of all the inhabitants of Mother Earth -- went off on a rant about "ghetto" names. Never mind that she's called Raven-Symoné. As Cassie Sheets at The Advocate put it, she "once again began her uncomfortable descent in the Land of Hauntingly Stupid Statements." Aside from plain old racist asshattery, WTF Raven-Symoné -- are you thinking Raven-Symoné is traditional Irish or what? It's pretty similar to Victoria Elizabeth, I guess. It would be bad enough if RavenSymoné had just come right out and said "I make look like one of them, but I'm not part of them." Raven-Symoné. Raven-Symoné. But no -- she apparently thinks her own "ghetto" name got picked off a list of "most popular white-baby names." Or maybe it's one of those hideous new colors of Oreo (sorry). Raven-Symoné. Raven-Symoné. "I'm not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea," quoth the definitely-not-ghetto-named Raven-Symoné. "It's just not going to happen. I'm not going to hire you."
"I wouldn't hire someone named Watermelondrea" or any other "ghetto" name, says the "ghetto"-named Raven-Symoné while keeping a straight face.
This ranks right up there with the time Raven-Symoné insisted in an interview that "I am from every continent in Africa." Raven-Symoné.
I have a granddaughter named Voletta ("Vo") after Biggie Smalls' mother, and one called "Ves," after Vestal Goodman, the pro-Assembly of God (and very white) gospel singer.
Whatever. I don't know the current black slang for "dunce," but stick that label on her ass -- now!
We're equal-opportunity ghetto-namers in my family.
Full disclosure time: I have an array of adopted grandchildren. I have grandsons with names like Tezeryck (known as "Tez"), Cydeon (known as "Cy") and Braxton (after the singer, Toni). There's even one called "Cheek" -- for Chikhai, after his Quechua grandfather. (The name supposedly means "he who excels above all," and why wouldn't he -- he's my grandkid.)
So I might be a little more sensitive than most people when idiots judge somebody by their name. But if you happen to be such a racist pig that you'd refuse to hire someone based on what their parents named them, don't even think twice about it: I wouldn't want my grandkids working for your sorry ass anyhow. Especially if your name is RavenSymoné.

Texas students to draw their dildos against guns on campus OBSERVER STAFF

Tucson man among those arrested at Phoenix-area 'sex-slave auction' OBSERVER STAFF
AUSTIN, Texas -- Next August, when University of Texas students will be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus, a new posse will be there sporting their own weapons -dildos.
"I felt a lot of frustration at those who were still trying to explain away or make excuses for this repeated pattern of violence and said to myself, 'Man, these people are such dildos.' "
A group of students and allies plan to strap on sex toys in protest of Texas' new campus carry law, which goes into effect Aug. 1 -- just before the start of the fall 2016 semester.
-- Protest organizer Jessica Jin, explaining that she got the idea while listening to a radio discussion about campus shootings
The group's rallying cry, Cocks Not Glocks, went viral Sunday. Gun nuts are already frothing at the mouth, with group organizer Jessica Jin alerting Austin police that she's received death threats before the protest even gets organized. Note: Plastic penises will remain banned in Texas classrooms even though guns will not. "But Jin and her plastic-willy-wielding allies see the spectacle of shaft as an effective way to show that more guns do not necessarily make for a safer campus," wrote Kate Briquelet at The Daily Beast. "I need this proliferation of dildos to offer people a visual representation of what it would be like if we all carried guns," Jin told the Houston Chronicle. "It should look ridiculous to you. That is the point," she added. "This is America. If guns and bloodshed don't wake people up, a public celebration of sexuality may just do the trick." Jin, a 24-year-old UT graduate, got the idea for the protest while listening to a National Public Radio discussion about campus violence. Only later did

of alternatives. The ones we want to hire here do have alternatives."
"The state of Texas has decided that it is not at all obnoxious to allow deadly concealed weapons in classrooms, however it DOES have strict rules about free sexual expression, to protect your innocence," she wrote on the protest group's Facebook page.
That's become the crux of many political issues in the U.S.: Republican extremists are not coming from a position of common sense.
"You would receive a citation for taking a DILDO to class before you would get in trouble for taking a gun to class. Heaven forbid the penis," she added. Last week, a UT professor emeritus of economics resigned rather than face a classroom full of armed gun nuts. In his letter of resignation, he addressed the implications for Texas universities: "The issue is not people like me, I'm small potatoes; the real issue is that for Texas, for people who are thinking about coming here, they have lots
Claudia Garate, 27, a UT graduate student, said her friends are already talking about buying dildos in burnt orange in order to support the protest and flash the school colors at the same time. "How can you be outraged about the idea of people carrying dildos, but not all the people getting gunned down and the violence we see day in and day out? I thought [the protest] was a pretty brilliant move," Garate said. Texas' new statute does at least require that students be 21 years of age in order to be licensed to bring guns on campus, thus eliminating many.

PHOENIX -- Two Arizona men -one of them from Tucson -- were among the "customers" arrested at a supposed sex-slave auction set up by the FBI in a Phoenix-area warehouse. Edward Kandl, 60, of Tucson had already made a $5,000 wire transfer to the fake Malaysian website in an attempt to purchase a sex slave, according to court documents filed in the case. He allegedly arrived at the bogus slave auction with another $10,000 in cash. While he was being arrested, a search warrant issued for his home allowed officers to find a secure room with blacked-out windows and a bed with a chain inserted through the frame. The home also contained an Uzi, a homemade and unregistered silencer, parts for a pipe bomb and seven improvised explosive devices, authorities said. Kandl has pleaded guilty under a plea deal and received a sentence of five years in prison. The other Arizona resident arrested is Edward Stevens, 68, of Mesa, who showed up with $4,000. He also accepted a plea deal and got five years. The other two nabbed were Steven Currence, 68, of Montana, and Charles Bunnell, 52, of Orange County, Calif. Bunnell has a 1989 arrest for rape and reportedly had tried twice to buy sex slaves overseas. The FBI said promotions for the Phoenix event specified that the women were kidnapped, non-consenting and that the sale would be illegal. Of more than 100 responses, most people backed out once the details were emphasized.

Grijalva and Ellison endorse Sanders for Dem nomination WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Tucson's U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva last week became the first member of Congress to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders for the Democratic presidential nomination.
AIDSWALK Tucson celebrated its 27th anniversary Sunday. Over the past few weeks, we have featured first-person accounts from participants about why they walk. AIDSWALK is the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation flagship event and largest annual fundraising initiative. To learn more about this year’s Walk or to support a Walker, please visit www.aidswalktucson.com.
He was followed on Monday by Rep. Keith Ellison of Illinois. Both congressmen are leaders in the Progressive Caucus.
By Curt Beall The endorsements come just before Sanders joins Hillary Clinton and the other Democratic hopefuls in their first candidate debate, scheduled for Tuesday in Las Vegas.
My first AIDSWALK was in Buffalo, NY in 2002. I had lost almost a dozen friends and heard that we were going to have our first AIDSWALK. I had just been diagnosed with the disease myself and wanted to honor my friends and to raise funds for the local AIDS organization that had helped me through those terrible first few months of finding out and dealing with my own diagnosis. The local AIDS agency provided me with one-on-one counseling. They provided support groups for me to attend. They gave me information on other agencies that could assist me. They were there to hold my hand when it needed holding. That year, I decided to make a poster dedicating my walk to my friends who had lost their battle with this terrible disease. I wrote in big letters at the top: MY WALK IS IN MEMORY OF then I listed each of their first names. In those days, several of my friends’ families didn’t know that it was AIDS that had taken their loved ones and by listing their last names I felt it would be outing them. That year they estimated that close to 40,000 people were being infected with the virus. I’m angry that those statistics are still the same today. With all the education and loss you would think that we could bring these numbers down but still after all these years people are still getting infected by the thousands.
Grijalva told The New York Times he hopes his endorsement helps Sanders gain more traction among nonwhite voters, where his support lags behind his white poll numbers.
So I will walk again this year to honor the friends I have lost to this disease and to hopefully educate people to the fact that this disease did not go away. Yes, the medications have helped people live longer but with each new infection it puts more of a strain on our local AIDS organizations to help these individuals. More people every year are in need of case management, housing, food, and counseling. So remember, educate, and for Brian, Steven, Brad, Ryan, & Frank, and the countless others who lost their lives to this disease, I will walk again. I hope you will join me. It’s not too late to support a walker. To do so, visit: www.firstgiving.com/ SAAF/aidswalk-tucson-2015
"Bernie has good positions on immigration and education, which are foundation issues for the Latino community," Grijalva said. "There's an opportunity to talk about those and expose the fact that Bernie is not just a one-tune candidate." Ellison's spokesman told MSNBC, "I'm endorsing Bernie because he is talking about the issues that are important to American families."

Photo: AP OBSERVER STAFF SALT LAKE CITY -- LGBT rights group Equality Utah has announced a proposal to rename a street near the Mormon Church's headquarters for slain gay-rights hero Harvey Milk. Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and Councilman Stan Penfold are on board with the plan. The group wants to rename 900 South as Harvey Milk Boulevard. The headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which strongly opposes most LGBT rights measures, has its global headquarters in the neighborhood just a few miles to the north. Milk was elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors in 1977, the
first openly gay man elected to office in the U.S., but served for only 11 months before being assassinated by disgruntled former city official Dan White.
Trans activists who attended a private meeting with Clinton said she may not yet have a plan for addressing anti-trans violence, but she's at least ready to listen.

Harvey Milk Boulevard would join Salt Lake City's Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Rosa Parks Boulevard among streets named for civil-rights activists.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Hillary Clinton, front runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, acknowledged last week that the killing of transgender women in the U.S. constituties a "national crisis."
Troy Williams, executive director of Equality Utah, said he believes it won't take too many years before Milk is revered by most of the public, just as King and Parks gained respectability long after their civil-rights activities were controversial.
Clinton's remarks came in a meeting with Black Lives Matter activists; most of the 20 or so transgender women killed this year have been people of color.
"I think, in time, all of Utah will be proud to have a street named after him," Williams said.
OW
Although the meeting itself was closed to the public, BuzzFeed interviewed trans activist Cherno Biko, who was among those attending. Clinton's commitment to address trans issues if she's elected came at the same time 32 members of Congress have sent a letter to the Transportation Security Administration urging the adoption of airport search standards more congenial to the trans traveling public. Their letter was prompted by a del-
uge of tweets at #TravelingWhileTrans in the wake of a "harrowing ordeal" posted by trans woman Shadi Petoskey at the Orlando International Airport last month. Key to the congressional demands is the insistence that TSA adopt screening protocols that does not rely on screeners' subjective approximations about an individual's gender identity. The letter urges the TSA to let trans passengers know that they do not have to "reveal prosthetic devices or binding materials while in a public area." TSA officials initially issued a statement supporting the actions of its screeners in the Petosky incident, but three days later -- after a public uproar erupted -- they agreed to a formal investigation. Petosky said someone from TSA called her and told her that they would obtain video of the incident involving her (the video belongs to the airport, not TSA) and that an investigation of this type usually takes at least 30 days.

Speakergeddon now focuses on Paul Ryan . . . OMG By R.D. Smith GUEST COLUMNIST
The Federal Court in Putrajaya is the highest appellate court in Malaysia, so the ruling has major ramifications for Malaysia's transgender community, traditionally known as mak nyah.
Actually, I've wondered if Boehner didn't resign in order to slap some reality into his party.
pertise should be funny. Yet he may indeed be the best they have." The fact that these poisonous vipers keep comparing themselves to Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan should be a felony.
Give that the big "whatever." Whether Boehner is clueless or not, the riot to replace him (you can't call it a "race" until somebody makes an effort to seriously run) promises to be the biggest laugh in U.S. politics since God told Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to run for president and then quickly told him to get his ass out of the race before he brought a plague of frogs on himself. So now the GOP is settling on Rep. Paul Ryan as the new speaker -- third in line for the presidency. Sigh. To give Ryan credit for not being a total dumbass, it took him less than 30 minutes after McCarthy's withdrawal to announced that he didn't want the job, either. Reports now say he's thinking about it. The media are actually reporting that congressional Republicans think Ryan is the smart one. That's how bad things are. This opinion of Ryan -- "super, super smart" -is based on his "budget" proposed during the 2012 presidential campaign, in which (in case you've forgotten) he was Mitt Romney's vice presidential running mate. You'll recall that this "budget" never got filled in with actual numbers, and the Congressional Budget Office pronounced it horseshit. It was based on assumptions such as "OK, we need this tax cut to produce this amount of revenue, so we just fill in that pipe dream here regardless of what the economy is doing by then. ... OK, next!" It was a Tea Party wet dream -- that's about the kindest thing you can say about it. Paul Krugman at The New York Times summed it up: "Ryan is to policy wonkery what [fellow GOP presidential candidate] Carly Fiorina is to corporate management: brilliant at selling himself, hopeless at actually doing the job. ... Court in Malaysia reinstates state ban on cross-dressing PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia -- The Federal Court of Malaysia last week reversed a lower court ruling that the state of Negeri Sembilan's ban on cross-dressing was unconstitutional.
It's a measure of just how loony the GOP has become when its rank-andfile thought they did something smart by forcing the resignation of House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio.
Granted, he couldn't have known that his presumed replacement as speaker, Kevin McCarthy of California, would withdraw his candidacy within days. But if Boehner didn't know that his cohorts would be nearly incapable of agreeing on a new speaker, maybe he's as dense as his opponents say he is.
Page 7
The National Review, once the venue for William F. Buckley's literate and often witty ruminations on conservatism, tried its best to endorse Ryan but couldn't bring itself to tell an outright lie: "Sometimes we think he is wrong on both substantive and tactical matters, but we never doubt that he is wrong for the right reasons."
Entirely on technical grounds -- that the three women who brought the lawsuit should have obtained judicial permission from a federal judge before filing -- the court upheld Sharia law prohibiting "a male person posing as a woman." A federal judge did grant permission in 2011, but the Federal Court said that judge acted erroneously. The women now have to begin the case again, this time in federal courts. Malaysian courts can be confusing to outsiders, including both a system of secular courts and a system of Shariah courts. Last week's ruling overturned the Putrajaya Court of Appeal, which ruled in November that the ban is "degrading, oppressive and inhuman."
With even the National Review losing its lunch, I am not joining the celebration with my fellow political writers, who encourage readers to stock up on popcorn for the impending sitcom spectacle. Of course, it's possible that none of the Republican posers who want the job will be able to get the necessary 218 votes. Some bloggers are saying the House GOP probably won't be able to agree on a speaker and some of them will end up voting with Democrats to elect somebody. It's also been pointed out that the speaker doesn't even have to be a member of the House, so they could pull in someone from outside -if anyone is interested in self-immolation. But if we end with a Republican speaker from the ranks of those who want the post so far, this is serious shit, folks. And it's deeper than any we've been in yet.

courageous CarePartners living with HIV. Many of us at TIHAN are LGBT, and many of us are not — but we are friends and allies who all have joined this march towards justice and equality. TIHAN reaches across lines of sexual orientation, building bridges of understanding and support with others. We are proud of our coalitions and collaborations — between people, between faith communities, and between segments of society that have misunderstood each other for too long. TIHAN is excited to have a resource booth at Tucson’s Pride in the Desert on Saturday. Stop by and “spin the wheel” and get a chance at some fun prizes!
For many of us, our orientation is much more than our sexuality — it is fundamental to every part of our being. And our pride is in much more than who we sleep with — it is a pride in who we have become, a pride in our way of living, a pride in having created a new reality where we can be ourselves and live with integrity and dignity, a pride in our relationships with those we love and with our world. We have pride that we have survived in a homophobic and heterosexist world, when many of our brothers and sisters did not survive — killing themselves directly (or perhaps indirectly) in the face of the pressures to pretend to be someone else. We have pride that we have moved beyond mere survival — we have learned to thrive and support each other, forming relationships of love and relationships of affiliation and empowerment for the betterment of ourselves and others like us. In the course of a few decades, we have helped increase visibility and acceptance and inclusion, making progress that some thought was impossible. Progress like marriage equality. But there’s much more that needs to be done. Making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in matters of employment, and in public accommodations. Rights for people who trans, including healthcare. Increased attention on sexual health and education, especially among young people. More effective HIV prevention messaging and programs. Further efforts to build bridges to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on communities of color. High rates of homelessness and suicide among LGBTQ youth. Extremely high rates of tobacco use among people living with HIV. There is so much more work to do . . . TIHAN is proud of our work in the HIV community. We’re proud to have such caring volunteers, compassionate faith communities, and fabulous and
But also know that Saturday’s Pride celebration is just one part of what we are doing — we are also building bridges with our Latino community through National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, with other non-gay nonprofits like Interfaith Community Services and Pima Council on Aging (we did presentations with both groups this month), with small businesses through our support of the GLBT Chamber of Commerce and our outreach to other caring local businesses, with African Americans, those in the critical work of substance abuse recovery, with immigrants, with our trans brothers and sisters, with gay adoption groups, with Equality Arizona working for employment protections, and so many more. We are proud to help people of faith in Southern Arizona congregations to become more aware and compassionate and to find ways to serve those who have been marginalized. TIHAN is proud of our people and our shared efforts to create a world where all of our diversity is valued. Take pride in your life, and in your work to create a world where all children can be nurtured and loved and allowed to blossom into the best person they can be. If you would like to be more involved in one of the many groups and organizations that are working on issues important to our LGBTQ and HIV communities, there are many ways to connect and engage. As always, I am happy to help answer questions about community groups that I am familiar with, and/or connect you with people and causes that make a difference. Feel free to email me at scott@tihan.org. Our work today is creating together a future for ourselves, and those who will follow us. Please take a minute and reflect on what makes you proud to be LGBTQ or an ally, and what you are doing to help others find that sense of strength and courage so that we can all find pride in who we are, and what we do, individually, and as a community. On behalf of all of us at TIHAN, thank you for your support of our work and our community.
OBSERVER STAFF With all the publicity last Christmas season about the rediscovered "bad Santa" of northern European folklore, was it inevitable that there would be a Krampus movie this year? Ha -- does the pope say "who am I to judge" out of one side of his mouth while condemning LGBT rights out of the other? Apparently there are two, in fact. The one, titled just plain "Krampus," is getting the publicity now and premieres Dec. 4, directed by Michael Dougherty. Its stars include Adam Scott, Toni Collette, Conchata Farrell, David Koechner and Allison Tolman. The rumor mill says Kevin Smith is also directing a Krampus film titled "Anti-Claus." The question is whether the film "Krampus" will do justice to crabby old Krampus himself. Apparently the movie's character isn't for scaring bad kids so much as the ones who don't believe in the magic of Christmas -- which, in the U.S., means not believing in Santa Claus. As a jumping-off point, the movie tells about a young boy named Max who has a bad Christmas with his dysfunctional family (a topic none of us would know anything about, of course) and inadvertently summons the ghoul of Christmas past.
As promotional materials for "Krampus" state: "All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family's home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive." Ho-hum ... That would have been the Christmas of 2011, when we gathered at Chez Granny in Ruby Begonia, Fla. Doesn't the movie offer anything new? Reader comments about the film's trailer have been almost 100 percent positive. Several praised the use of makeup rather than special effects to achieve ghoulish effects. One commenter, DudeMan McAwesome Sox (OK, we're quoting him because of his name) was the only one who claims Krampus was part of his childhood: "When I was a kid, my parents would warn me that if I wasn't good, then Krampus was gonna get me! This movie is coming full circle here." MalevolentCure simply offers a quick summation: "It's morbid comedy : ) . . . What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly." For most of us, we'll just have to wait and see to find out which members of our beloved family made it into the script.

Arizona student kills one, Margaret Cho’s mom injures three in Flagstaff says ‘Hi, Tucson’ OBSERVER STAFF
Continued from page 1 Tickets are on sale now for her show at the Rialto Theatre on Sunday.
FLAGSTAFF -- A Northern Arizona University student who shot and killed one person and wounded three last week frequently boasted about his guns on social media.
The internet says Cho is openly bisexual, and has stated that she has had “a lot of experience in the area of polyamory and alternative sexuality in general.” The internet does say a whole lot of stuff — what we know for sure is girlfriend is awesome! And we aren’t gonna miss seeing a minute of her show.
Early reports indicated that the melee began as a confrontation between fraternity members. The four victims reportedly were all members of Delta Chi fraternity. The suspect, NAU freshman Steven Jones, 18, is not a Delta Chi member; he is expected to face one charge of felony and three charges of aggravated assault. Even though Arizona has permissive gun laws, concealed-carry applicants are required to be 21 years old. The dead student has been identified as Colin Brough. The injured are Nicholas Prato, Nicholas Piring and Kyle Zientek.
Steven Jones, 18, allegedly opened fire on a group of fellow NAU students. Via Instagram
Chi, he was a member of Alpha Delta Lambda Honor Society. According to a Facebook posting by Prato's aunt, his girlfriend was present when he was shot. She said the girl's father told her that Prato held Brough as he died, and then Prato was shot. The girl reportedly ran away and called 911.
With one Instagram post of himself holding a machine gun, Jones added the caption "It's a full auto kinda day."
Piring is a junior at NAU's W.A. Franke College of Business. His LinkedIn page shows him having a full tuition scholarship.
Brough's LinkedIn identifies him as a member of the NAU class of 2017; as a freshman, his major was stated as business marketing. In addition to Delta
A man who identified himself as Zientek's stepbrother wrote on Facebook that Zientek is "a strong kid and will overcome this devastating situation."
We had an opportunity to ask her a few questions when we learned she’d be in Tucson Oct. 18. We asked her everything from, “How many guns should every American own,” to “Who is she supporting in the 2016 presidential election.” With the major milestone of marriage equality under America’s belt, we wondered what she thought was the biggest LGBTQ issue to be resolved in the U.S. now. Cho’s insightful reply centered on family: “We need to make sure that gay couples are able to adopt children. I think that this will be the next big battle. We are now able to get married, but
there are still issues surrounding and limiting same-sex couples. especially as it relates to adopting children. We need equality — all people should be considered equal,” she said. Political questions can sometimes be tricky for celebrities, but we just had to ask what she thought of the leading Republican primary candidate, Donald Trump. Cho told us if she had to crochet something out of Trump’s hair it would be a cozy for her toilet paper! Fair enough. Politics and hot-button topics aside, Cho wanted us to know that her mother is doing great. “She’s so excited I will be performing in Tucson and said to say, ‘Hi.’ ” Oh, and as far as how many guns folks should own and who she’s supporting in 2016 — “NONE” and “Bernie all the way.” Tickets for the show start at $25; doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Visit www.rialtotheatre.com for tickets and more information.

OBSERVER STAFF LONDON -- The Olympic diver and the Oscar-winning screenwriter placed an engagement ad in The Times of London last week in a low-key announcement confirming what the whole world must have suspected by now: Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black are engaged. The notice couldn't have been more discreet: "The engagement is announced between Tom, son of Robert and Debra Daley of Plymouth, and Lance, son of Jeff Bisch of Philadelphia and Anne Bisch of Lake Providence." The pair revealed their relationship in 2014 after Daley came out via video in December 2013. Daley was ecstatic on Instagram: "@DLanceBlack and I would just like to thank everyone for all the lovely messages yesterday! It really means a lot. We are both v excited"
Daley's mother, Debra Daley, told the Plymouth (England) Herald that wedding plans won't come together until after the 2016 Olympics. "The whole family is extremely excited and looking forward to the big day, [but] they are going to wait until after the Olympic Games in Rio before they decide on the date of the wedding and where they want to marry," she said. Daley is now in Olympic training in Stratford, England. He had previously hinted that the 2016 Olympics might be his last, after a hectic four years of unrelenting spotlight since his success in 2012. "I'm probably going to go on holiday for a bit," he told the media. "Cheesecake will definitely be on the menu, and ice cream probably. We'll see how it goes!" Sounds as if the menu might include a little DLB as well.
Remember to send in your wedding announcements and photos to info@observerweekly.com so we can print them here for all the world to see.

Feminist filmmaker Chantal Akerman dies in Paris by suicide The director Chantal Akerman at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.
Zoe’s World
By Zoe
OBSERVER STAFF PARIS -- Chantal Akerman, the Belgian film director who stunned the world at age 25 with a 1975 three-hour masterpiece containing little dialogue and no score, died in Paris last week by suicide, according to Le Monde. Although not necessarily a household name with the public, the Los Angeles Times reported that Akerman was frequently listed with Orson Welles, Jean-Luc Godard and Rainer Werner Fassbinder -- the very top tier of film directors.
Her latest, "No Home Movie," is currently showing at the New York Film Festival and generating considerable press. The daughter of Polish survivors of the Holocaust, and an out lesbian, she was 65 years old at the time of her death and was well-known to suffer from depression, according to The New York Times. Her 1975 success, "Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles," is still cited as an influence by many filmmakers. The experience of viewing it was once described by Times film critic Denis Lim as "a matter of recalibrating one's biorhythms." It is not her only influential film among the 40 that she made, however. Nicola Mazzanti, director of the Royal Belgian Film Archive, told The Times he once asked Akerman how she edited "Hotel Monterey," her 1972 silent film about a Lower Manhattan hotel. " 'It was my breathing that decided the length of my shots,' " he recalled her saying. "That's Chantal Akerman. She breathed through the films. She was cinema." Mazzanti also addressed the '75 film: " 'Jeanne Dielman' is a film that created, overnight, a new way of making films, a new way of telling stories, a new way of telling time," he told The Times. "There are filmmakers who are good, filmmakers who are great, filmmakers who are in film history. And then there are a few filmmakers who change film history."
