Tucsonans gather to commemorate Latino HIV/AIDS awareness TUCSON -- October 15th, more than 400 Tucsonans gathered to commemorate National Latino AIDS Awareness Day. The 13th Annual Community Dinner & Conversation took place at the Historic Pima County Courthouse, where organizers lit the courthouse façade (page 16) in a vibrant red in observation of Latino HIV/AIDS awareness. In Pima County, one in four new cases of HIV affect Latinos. NLAAD is celebrated every year as the culmination to Hispanic Heritage Month. Locally, the planning committee gave its prestigious Christian Barco Community Leadership Award to Jaime B. Arrieta, an HIV prevention advocate who created the Voz program at the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation. The evening’s emcees included Planned Parenthood Arizona’s Edna Meza Aguirre and Arizona Daily Star Columnist Neto Portillo Jr.
