WHY DO A FOUNDATION? The most competitive Degree courses in Art & Design believe it is the most desirable pathway to preparation for degree One Year Diagnostic Course which allows you to try all areas of Art & Design in in order to choose a specialist area and provides you with new skills Helps you to prepare a specialist portfolio Provides you with a broader knowledge of careers and the best courses available to study at Degree level Provides you with the help and guidance you need to make applications in Art & Design through UCAS BTEC Diploma qualification – up to 240 UCAS points


WHY DO A FOUNDATION?

Stage 1: Exploratory Stage September - November Opportunity to try all areas of Art & Design Introduced to technical workshops and Art & design core skills Stage 2: Pathway Stage November – April You will specialise in your chosen subject area and develop a specific portfolio for interview UCAS – Jan 15th Trip Abroad Stage3: Confirmatory Stage March/ April – June 6 week Final Major project culminating in a final exhibition


IMPORTANT FACTS CONT………. Application Deadline is January 31st Direct application to Brookes and not through UCAS Download the application form from the prospectus page on the Oxford Brookes website. Complete the application form along with the date selection form for portfolio review. Once received Admissions will acknowledge receipt of your application End of February we hold portfolio reviews


IMPORTANT FACTS CONT………. We have one of the highest application ratios in the UK receiving over 600 applications every year for only 90-100 places We advise that you also apply to other Foundation Art & Design courses as we simply do not have enough places or room to accept everyone even if you are predicted an A*. Please note there are no student loans for the foundation course so accommodation costs and day to day living is funded by you. Fees are only free for students who are under 19 on 31st August in year of entry.


WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? Your portfolios should contain and evidence the following: Drawing - observational including life drawing and experimental mark making using a range of media and approaches. Try spending different amounts of time e.g. 1 min, 5mins, 15mins and also longer more sustained drawing. Experimentation - using mixed media, making samples, models etc. Evidence of both 3D and 2D work. All larger pieces and 3D work should be photographed.


WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? Research & Idea Development sketchbooks, research on artists and designers, studies and preparatory work. Show all stages of how you have got from a starting point to a final piece. The journey you have embarked upon to achieve the final outcome is very important therefore present the development stages of your project. Good presentation - a well presented portfolio with work which is mounted and well ordered. Work should be clean and show that you have taken time and care over producing and presenting it. Show that you are focused and serious about Art & Design

Added Benefits: • We have a great number of additional opportunities on the course for students to improve and develop their work experience opportunities: • Fashion and Textiles: Oxford Fashion Week Concept Show • Fashion Photography: live project with garments supplied by high street stores Ann Summers. • Fashion Photography: Working with a local Hair Stylist to produce shoot for advertisement and competition entry. • Fine Art and 3D: Opportunity to exhibit in the Pitt Rivers and Oxford Museum of Natural History. • Graphics: Working on the end of year exhibition catalogue • Textiles: Working with the Guild of Spinners Dyers and Weavers

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION AND DRAWING


INTENSIVE FOUNDATION PORTFOLIO • 12 week semesters • Choice of 1, 2 or 3 semesters • The intensive nature of this course requires students to be motivated and driven. • Completing one semester allows the student to go travelling, gain work experience or just save up to go to uni after producing a portfolio for interview. • Small number of students so tutor time is greater than foundation • Accommodation available • Apply through the Brookes website • Course fees are £3200 per 12 weeks
