Find yourself in a catering conundrum? How will I feed my friends? Buffet or Stations? What’s the difference and how does a girl choose? We feel your pain. You’re no catering expert but you do know you want your guest to have a good time and leave with a full belly. So, we enlisted the expertise of Stacy Ziegler, Director of Sales at BOLD AMERICAN EVENTS in Atlanta, Georgia to give us the nitty gritty on these two reception set up options. You’ll be surprised to know there’s not much difference in price, but there’s a whole lot of difference in how they each affect your event. Stacy says “both buffets and stations give guest the most food variety and the cost is nearly identical. The biggest difference is really in the reception set up and the overall feel of the event you’re going for.” That’s the biggest thing. So, here’s what you need to know about each as you plan the reception of your dreams...

Receptions with buffets are close to as traditional a set up as you can get. Tables are pre-set with plates, utensils, glassware, etc. Every guest has an assigned seat, eating everything at once so there is less up and down.
During a reception with stations, various catering minibuffets are placed throughout the room and guests are encouraged to visit each station. Think tapas at different tables. Plates & utensils are not pre-set at the tables, rather guests get a new place and fork as they visit each station.
The Benefits
Buffets give you the dramatic look of a traditional reception, while saving your wallet from the plated and served dinner that would typically run you 25% more per person. Let’s face it, guests really do like to have a seat at the event, it feels more formal. Plus, there’s less up and down because guests eat everything at once rather than traveling to different stations.
What you Need to Know
Lines, there will be lines. Since all of your food is displayed in one long buffet set up, it will be wise to work with your wedding team to devise a strategy to alleviate standing in line. Depending on space you can opt for 2 buffets or a double sided option where two lines can be formed on each side. It’s also a good idea to call guests for their turn at the buffet by table so they wait seated, conversing and sipping wine and not standing.
The Benefits
Catering stations are a great way to make your reception feel like a contemporary party instead of a traditional reception. Rather than a room full of 60” rounds, you can get creative with various table sizes and high boys spread throughout. It’s a great option if space is an issue and you don’t wish to decrease the guest list. Plus, stations essentially break apart the buffet and save guest from waiting in long lines, and you can get creative with the food options at each station by incorporating unique themes. Instead of being placed in a basket, these sparklers were housed inside two tall metallic pots, orange ribbon with white polka dots tied around the tops. Each sparkler was labeled with a bright yellow tag which read "Let love sparkle."
Skip the paper and ink signs and use a method more timeless and practical: chalkboards. This DIY option provides an old-fashioned feel untouched by paper signs, and the chalkboards can easily be erased and reused at any future event! These fun-shaped signs were provided by CHALK SHOP.

BOUQUET Bridal bouquets from the 1920's were very dramatic and opulent, large scale and often had cascading elements. BOTANICALS ON THE GULF created a perfectly grand cascade style bouquet straight out of the 20s done in shades of white and ivory with roses, hydrangea, gardenias (a VERY vintage flower!), peonies and calla lilies with some small touches of greenery.
GOWN One of the gowns worn by the bride was an incredible NICOLE MILLER gown, which just personified the 1920's theme wonderfully. The back of this gown really made the overall look, with a swooping design and offset silver beaded, sparkly straps.
ACCESSORIES A gorgeous, custom made white feather and crystal hairpiece with detachable birdcage veil was used to highlight the bride’s perfectly simple hairstyle. The accessories were kept minimal as the dress, hair and makeup were so dramatic, but small vintage Deco crystal earrings and a fabulous diamond ring were used.
BOUTONNIERE Wanting something fun and playful while bringing in those Deco themes of the era, the groom wore a boutonniere that included a calla lily, tied with gold wire and little sprays of white feathers.

Fantastic Deco shaped cards, attached to each champagne glass, dangled beautifully from the wine glasses creating a classy wow factor.

When Sarah graduated from college, her family decided to celebrate with a Norwegian Epic cruise. Little did she know that the ocean adventure would be the start of an even greater journey! The boyfriend of Sarah’s sister decided to invite his boss and good friend, Joe, to join them on the vacation. Sarah and Joe immediately clicked, and one year and nine months after the cruise, on a softly lit pathway at the Atlantis Hotel in the Bahamas, Joe got down on one knee and asked Sarah to spend the rest of her life with him. Desiring an intimate celebration with only their closest family and friends, the couple invited forty-five guests to their spring celebration at BELLA COLLINA, settled just outside of Orlando. The natural beauty of this site, with its rolling hills and and Tuscan architecture, lent just the Italian feel that Sarah and Joe were looking for, and they were wed inside the venue’s open-air atrium, an enchanting space with sandstone columns, intricate stone floors and candle-lit chandeliers. Following photos and cocktails, the newlyweds and guests made their way to the Grande Lawn, where round tables bedecked in a breathtaking combination of champagne and pink stood scattered across the yard. It was here that all were seated to enjoy a superb meal catered by Bella Collina, after which partygoers danced the evening away beneath a glowing canopy of stars.

Months after being introduced to her in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Dave sent Brittany the Facebook message that would be the start of their happily ever after. Life as an Air Force pilot kept Dave very busy, but he was smitten and determined to have a first date with this girl. So what did he do? He rented a plane one evening and flew straight to Brittany’s hometown to take her out to dinner. Talk about sweeping a girl off her feet! When it came time for the couple to plan their St. Augustine wedding, the colors of choice were watermelon pink and navy blue. Before heading to the RIVER HOUSE for the ceremony, Brittany met Dave at the Lightner Museum to share a “first look,” a moment gorgeously captured by the photographer for the couple to always treasure. Following a heartfelt ceremony in a room filled with sunlight and flowers, Brittany and Dave spent their first hour as Mr. and Mrs. Elkins mingling with guests, enjoying good conversation, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Afterwards at the reception, guests were seated to savor an enticing dinner prepared by Mary Pritchard of CULINARY OUTFITTERS, being offered the choice of either herb crusted chicken or mahi-mahi for their meal. Music from DJ DAVID CHAMPAGNE kept guests old and young on their feet all night long, and as the reception drew to an end, Dave escorted his bride through a sea of bubbles to be whisked away in a pumpkin carriage!

CEREMONY After the ceremony, bride and groom passed under the traditional saber arch used to salute new military couples, Brittany receiving a “swat” on the backside to welcome her into the Air Force family.
COLORS The color palette of navy and pink was carried flawlessly from ceremony through reception. Even the escort cards bore pink embellishments and a tiny blue bow! Not the smallest detail was overlooked.

Creator and owner of one of South Florida’s most popular hair and makeup studios, Nikol Johnson has always possessed a passion for things pretty, pink and Parisian, and that is what inspired her boyfriend Raymond to propose to her atop the Eiffel Tower Restaurant in Las Vegas. Nikol couldn't have been more surprised, and the planning of their French vintage inspired nuptials commenced! So when the opportunity came for her to wed Brad at the beautiful Kissimmee, Florida, property of one of his cousins, Brittany was thrilled! As most of their family and friends would also be traveling from Chicago for the wedding, Brittany and Brad wished to provide guests with a unique wedding experience like none other, full of southern grace, vintage charm, and lots of personalized details. And they certainly succeeded! Though the big day started with rainy weather in its forecast, nothing could dampen the sunshine of this celebration, especially with the bride’s chosen color palette of bright yellow and charcoal gray. Clothed in a classic gown with a lace bodice and satin train, Brittany wed Brad beneath the shade of three Spanish moss-covered oak trees before one hundred of their loved ones. The simple decor and handmade details of the tent reception that followed put huge smiles on the faces of all in attendance. Those smiles only widened when guests were served cuisine by TWO CHICKS AND A POT, which included shrimp and grits, personal chicken pot pies, prime rib and sides of mashed potatoes and honey green beans.

Little did Paula know when she was preparing for her blind date that the love of her life would soon make his appearance. The twist is that it wouldn’t be her date — it would be his best friend. That’s right! Wondering how the blind date was going for his pal, Brannen decided to drop by and somehow found himself seated next to Paula. Both were struck by an immediate attraction, and within the week the two had exchanged phone numbers and started dating. Paula received a surprise proposal from Brannen one evening while they were out strolling on the moonlit beach, and though Paula had always known she wanted a beach wedding, she poured over copies of wedding magazines for further ideas and inspiration. A Marie Antoinette themed spread immediately grabbed her attention, and it was the spark that ignited the exquisite color combination of pale pink and dusty gold used throughout her destination wedding. Paula and Brannen were married on a bright September afternoon on the fresh green grounds of THE RITZ-CARLTON SARASOTA, the soft colored attire of the wedding party blending seamlessly with the tropical surroundings of the locale. Wedding photos followed beside the peaceful waters of the Mexican Gulf, after which the happy couple traveled to the rooftop Sunset Terrace for a time of dining and jamming to the tunes provided by GRANT HEMOND AND ASSOCIATES.

COLORS Colors for this party were inspired by the fabric used throughout the event. Hints of sage green, sweet pink and pale yellow added just the right amount of feminine touch.
EASY DIY DECOR When your party is fabric themed it's easy to get creative with the decor. Simply tear or cut with rough edges strips of fabric and create a banner shown above, wrap around glasses, tie to the backs of chairs and you're done!

To celebrate the little boy soon to enter Lori’s life, THE PEAR EVENTS threw her a surfer themed baby shower flooded with fantastic beachy details. Tropical orchids garnished the honored seat of the mom-to-be. THAT’S A GOOD SIGN built a custom surf shack, dubbed “Lawson’s Surf Shack” after the baby, and from the shack’s side hung tiny swim trunks, goggles, and flip flops to start little Lawson’s beachwear collection. Guests snacked on pineapple upside down cake, fruit skewers and cookies in the shape of surfboards. Also available was a tiki bar complete with mason jar glasses, colorful straws, and a signature drink of blood-orange mimosas. Florida native Lauran has spent her four years of high school pursuing an acting and singing career in Los Angeles, so her family was very eager to give her the normalcy of an at home graduation party. They contacted Elissa Stone at ONE STONE EVENTS to help with the planning, and after learning that Lauran is a vegan and very earthconscious individual, Elissa came up with the party theme: “Bloom and Grow.” Lauran and her mom prepared healthy appetizers of guacamole cones and cucumber avocado summer rolls. A small avocado “Wisdom Tree” sat in the family room on which guests could hang green paper leaves of advice and well wishes for the graduate. The most stunning detail of the event? Every girl loves feeling like a princess, and little Gabriella certainly received the royal treatment at her fourth birthday party! In planning her daughter’s celebration, Jennifer Shah of THE PEAR EVENTS steered clear of the typical Disney Princess party and instead went for a royal princess theme with a few Disney touches. Garden bouquets and “enchanted” roses graced tables set with small, ornate dishes and golden utensils. A 3D princess gown cake sat regally atop a pink vintage vanity, watercolor cakes and other desserts sitting alongside. Upon arriving at the party, Gabriella’s friends were greeted by a beautiful “fairy godmother” who helped them select a colorful gown and matching accessories to wear for the celebration.
